I purchased this item for two reasons: firstly I wanted to expand the internal storage space without causing the console to overheat (thus the identical 5400rpm speed, compared to the stock drive); secondly, I wanted a hard disk that would avoid the visual & audio skipping/ streaming issues seen with many high capacity HDDs on the PS3. Gladly, this drive satisfied on all fronts. If you want to expand/ replace your PS3 hard disk, this is a perfect choice and highly recommended! Also, if you're interested in why many drives from many brands (including Western Digital, Toshiba and HGST) cause these skipping issues whilst inside the PS3, please read below...Contrary to popular belief, almost all of the hard disks causing issues with stuttering visuals and audio on the PS3 have one thing in common - very poor write speeds. Many people seem to believe the audio/ visual stuttering is due to "advanced format" drives not complying with the (now dated) PS3 interface standards but the reality is much simpler. In the case of all games where stuttering or skipping is prevalent, a background process called "caching" is being employed by the game engine. When working as intended, this process involves writing data to the hard disk in advance (in the background), allowing rapid texture and audio streaming when such elements are desired on-screen (and thus caching is typically used to circumvent the incredibly slow reads from the PS3 blu ray drive). However, if the hard disk write speed is poor, the visuals and audio will stutter and skip as the game engine struggles to render with an incomplete cache of data (which the HDD cannot write into fast enough). It is for this reason that 90% of the games presenting stutter issues with caching are amongst the most technically demanding on the console. Examples of games that typically exemplify this issue are: Uncharted 2, LA Noire, God Of War III, Red Dead Redemption and Batman: Arkham City. Due to their high quality textures and audio, these games require a fast read AND write speed from the installed hard disk, irrelevant of whether they are being played from a blu ray disc or entirely from the HDD. In conclusion: on the PS3, hard disk write speeds are often just as important as read speeds - if you're updating your internal storage, pay close attention to the HDD specs (and don't go for 7200rpm drives, they'll generate too much heat [especially inside a PS3 phat]).

I bought this mainly as another convenient portable backup for video when my Humax DVR filled up. It lives in a cheap USB2.0 caddy which is not the fastest of interfaces, but can cope well enough with streaming off the video, and only takes a few minutes to load a typical one hour SDTV program. It seems to be economical on power as it only becomes slightly warm even when in continuous use backing-up from DVR or streaming into the TV, and I generally only use a single USB-A to USB-A lead and not the supplied Y lead.My sample measures 9.5mm thick by 70mm wide by 100mm long. The length measurement includes the bit of connector sticking out. All the electronics are fully enclosed, and there is nothing to short out on a metal housing.I initialised it as a 'basic drive', and it was then formatted correctly at different times by both an XP and a W7 PC for different requirements either as NTFS or exFAT or old-fashioned but compatible FAT32. The formatted capacity is 931GB for all of them. I first 'quick-formatted' it as NTFS when it was temporarily used for more PC data than would fit on a couple of USB sticks, but later reformatted it as FAT32 for the TV programs. In each case the time taken for a 'quick format' was less than a minute. On my DVR a typical 50minute SD TV program takes approximately 1GB, so if you expected to fill the drive at one session, be prepared for a long wait! As a 5400rpm drive it is not the fastest, but then I did not expect absolute speed if it was fitted in a USB2.0 caddy. It does need to use a higher power USB socket, for example while the TV has a 1Amp USB socket dedicated for a hard drive not all USB sockets can supply the full half an Amp.Both the TV and DVR can read and write FAT32, and each only uses one USB-A to USB-A lead to connect to it (meaning that it does not take too much power), and so it has fulfilled the objective of being a Video archive for when the DVR gets too full; it is doing the job it was purchased for, and doing it well.

I got myself a new laptop a couple of years ago. The same one I'm typing on now. I spent a lot of money on it. Regardless it arrived with a broken hard-drive.Unfortunately the problem was intermittent. Enough for me to refuse to return it and instead I just bared it. In the end I decided it wasn't worth the risk of losing 1 years worth of computer data for the sake of a hard drive. So I backed everything up. Downloaded a Windows 7 .iso image from the internet, burned it as an executable disk, and copied my computers Windows Product Code onto the front of the disk. So now I can fresh install any time I want.I changed out the hard drive and all was well. Until this Sunday that was, when my computer mysteriously refused to boot up. Reinstalled Windows, still crashed. Tried a different hard drive, that worked. So here I am, now the new hard drive has been delivered and installed. As it stands right now, this hard drive works nicely. If there was any downside it is probably just a tad louder than my last one. But hey with how mechanical hard drives go this one will likely die in the next year or so as well. When that happens I'll probably bite the bullet and shell out for and try an SSD instead. I've been so-so about them for a long time especially given the cost per GB still. This one is half the price of a reasonable SSD and four times the size. So I'll let you work that one out for yourselves. If anyone wants a dependable hard drive, that is cost effective and has superior service. Don't go mad just buy this. You won't get better service just because something is more expensive.

I needed this drive to overcome the storage limitation of my 750GB laptop disk (not for OS, for data storage partitions), only to be disappointed by its performance as compared to the one I was intending to replace. I ran a benchmark based on CrystalDiskMark 3.0.3 and this disk was way behind my 3-year old Western Digital drive. If you're using it for game consoles (as numerous reviews here indicate), the performance should be more than adequate but if you have applications that take advantage of 1TB storage drive's responsiveness (short of SDD drive, that is), then you may have to look for 7200RPM drives such as Hitachi Travelstar model HTS721010A9E630.There is nothing wrong with this driveas such but doesn't qualify for the top end of 1TB HDD 2.5" league table despite the fact that some reviews here indicate otherwise. I could only come to this conclusion by trying it first-hand and now I've opted for Hitachi Travelstar.

My HP Pavilion Dv7-1174ca laptop runs 64-bit Vista which is gradually dying a slow and painful death, as Vista does after a few years. The old 320GB hard drive came out easily and the new 1TB drive slotted right in its place with no problem at all. With a new Win7 DVD in the appropriate slot the system powered up and installation commenced without hiccup. It takes a while to download all the updates but I now have a perfectly operating Win 7 system ready for applications to be loaded. However, the next step will be to partition the drive so I can create a Vista partition and data partition and then, hopefully, I can boot either operating system and not have to reinstall every single application unless I want to run it under Win7.I tend to prefer Seagate over any other HDD manufacturer these days and find their disks extremely reliable.

After the original 320GB hard disc failed and couldn't be recovered in an otherwise very usable Sony Vaio laptop, this Samsung 1TB 2.5 inch drive appeared such good value that anything less saved only a very few pounds.I received it within 2 days and fitted it within ten minutes, then loaded it with Windows 7 (laptop was originally Vista, but who wants that?). The drive was already correctly formated so all I had to do was boot the machine from the CD and load up.This 1TB drive has been brilliant. It is quiet (could say silent) and has worked without a hiccup since I fitted it a few weeks ago. It has also significantly increased the performance rating of the laptop,as it is much faster than the original. At this price for a 1TB 2.5 inch disc that works silently, how can I rate it at anything less than 5 stars?

Like many other reviewers here, I bought this to upgrade my Playstation console (The Playstation 3 Super Slim 12GB, if you must know)With the official Sony Mounting Bracket Kit, I had a quick and easy install of this new hard drive (apart from the bit where I had to take off one of the sides of the console, because I was worried I'd break it if I forced it too hard - but that's for the review of that) and booted up my PS3.It took a while for it to do the initialising thingy it does with the new hard drive, but within minutes I was downloading LOADS and LOADS.Couple of weeks later, and I think I still have most of it free, 1TB is a lot when you mainly buy disc games, but it's wonderful to look and see all the free space and all the games I CAN now download. So, yeah, cheap, lots of space, perfect!

I bought this to upgrade my PS3 40 gig HD which was getting a bit full, This was a little more complex exercise than the 'youtube' videos implied,, requiring the use of not only an external HD for the backing up, but also a memory stick with the latest update downloaded to be inserted before the PS would format the drive. This though is in no way the fault of Seagate or the Hard drive which functions perfectly and is now running happily with my restored settings leaving me with my 40 gig as a spare external drive. I fully recommend this drive for upgrading your PS3, despite not being that technical installing it to the carrier and into the machine was by far the easiest part of the whole operation and it's functioning perfectly,5 stars without hesitation

Looked at various options for upgrading my PS4 hard drive and found this to be the best value for money. 1TB is twice the standard memory which I found plenty but there are 2TB drives available if your willing to spend more. It's easy to do just make sure all your game saves are either backed up to online storage or onto a USB stick. Then simply download a software update to a memory stick, swap the drive and reboot, it only took me around 15mins.The only pain is that you need to re-download all your games so your internet is just going to have to take a beating.Alternatives such as SSD are very expensive while SSHD only offers a slight performance improvement (a few seconds off load timesdidn't seem worth the extra cost)

I got this as a drive upgrade for my PS3 Slim. I went for this over the older Samsung HN-M101MBB that's been around for a while now. No problems with installation, although you do need to know what you're doing. Having hundreds of gigabytes of storage is a massive improvement over my old 120Gb. Transfer rate is decent enough and there have been no problems with overheating. However, be aware, you don't get the full storage capacity to play with. While this is a 1TB drive, the useable space is actually around 880Gb (the rest is taken up by the PS3's system data and other stuff). Even so, if you're an avid PS3 gamer, upgrading to a drive this size is one of the best purchases out there.

22.4.2013

I purchased one of these so that I could replace my ps3s 120gb hdd as all ps3 owners will know the hdd space gets full pretty quickly with game data/updates and game add ons. Overkill or not You just can't have enough space in my opinion. After backing up my old hard drive of 93gb or so to a fat32 external drive along with the ps3 update, put this new one in, installed the update and did the restore. Works brilliant, you get about 821gb or so when placing in the ps3 for the first time and after the restore I'm still looking at over 700gb of free space. The drive is nice and silent and all I can hear is the cooling fan. Worth every penny and highly recommended to others.

23.4.2014

I got this for my PS4 and it was a doddle to put in, definitely alot easier than swapping the PS3s hard drive, the PS4 comes with a standard 500gb hard drive but 140gb is lost right out of the box due to apps and other stuff so what you really end up with is about 360gb for games and as all games have to be installed you may find yourself coming up short. Call of duty ghosts uses 40gb, killzone 37gb and BF4 50gb. So I thoroughly recommend this hard drive and this hard drive does not void the PS4s warranty as its spec is recommended by sony, other hard drives will void your warranty though so be careful if you go for something different.

16.6.2013

My brother wanted a 1tb hd for his PS3. I bought him this hard drive and it was so amazingly silent and fast that despite having a 640gb on mine, I went for one for my PS3. Anyone with PS Plus knows that there is no such thing as too much space available. With the 640gb I have roughly 200gb available. This one gives me more 302gb of space that the 640gb model. Should be good until the end of the year when it comes to downloading those plus free games. This is the drive to get for upgrading the PS3. Forget about any other model. It beats all the others in terms of performance and the price is very cheap.

Now I have finally got it formatted and working, very frustrating.I spoke with Samsung then Seagate only to be told it sounds like you have been sold a second hand Hard Drive from another machine, because the serial number they told me was obscure .On getting it started I find there's only 987 GB instead of the 1 TB as it says on the drive and the advertising when I purchased it..I downloaded all my files, Music, Pictures and backed up my computer. It being an Internal I have it slotted into a plug and play external docking station that plays 2.5/3.5 HDD. plugged into a 3.0 USB.

19.3.2014

I brought two of these internal HDD's with the intention of installing them into two PS3 consoles (One phat, one slim). After backing up the data on each console to an external drive, the swap of internal drives was quick and easy, setup was hassle free and data restore was done within about 15 minutes. They've been in use for almost three months now, with IO-intensive games such as the digital-download version of GTA V running without issue. Games load and save quickly and the drive is near silent - No clunking or motor noise.
