Wahl Pet Nail Grinder – Battery OperatedI have two rescue dogs. "Amber" is an Alsatian x Greyhound x Staffie who is going to be 12 yrs old in November. We adopted her in April 2011. We also have "Maisy" who is an Irish Border Collie and is approximately 6½ yrs old and we adopted her in September 2012.Both these girls are a NIGHTMARE for having their claws clipped, whether I do it or the Vet does. "Maisy" is sooooooooooo bad that the Vet had to give up because she was getting dreadfully upset so I have to do it. "Amber" anticipates pain and start yelping for nothing! Therefore, "Amber" has been my tester for this Wahl Nail Grinder.1st Impressions:• Nicely packaged in an attractive and informativebox on which is listed the advantages of the product and what it is and what is included in the kit.• In the box is the Nail Grinder Unit complete with safety cap, 2 Sanding Drums [one of which is already fitted to the unit], 5 Sanding Bands [1 already fitted to each of the Sanding Drums + 3 spare] and an Instruction Leaflet.• It clearly states that it is BATTRY OPERATED and that it requires 2 x C sized Batteries and that they are NOT INCLUDED.• The product carries a 2 year Guarantee from the date of purchase or the date received as a gift.In Use:• I picked up a pack of supermarket own brand long life batteries for around £3.00. I unscrewed the battery compartment cap at the bottom of the unit and popped them in. I also read the Instruction Leaflet.• I settled "Amber" on her bed lying on her side and sat down beside her to work on her claws.• There are 3 little 'windows' of varying sizes on the safety cap, and with practice, you will get to know which is best for the pet you are giving a manicure to.• Once switched on the motor of the nail grinder is very quiet. Obviously there is a little more noise when touching the claws, and that will vary depending on the thickness of the claws being treated. "Amber" has very thick claws and they have long quicks which is the problem. This has most likely been as a result of not having had frequent claw clipping during her previous life before we adopted her.• At first she was a little unsure, but once she got used to the feel of the grinder against her claws, she relaxed and was as good as gold. Due to her type of claw, grinding them down is quite a slow process compared to clipping. All 4 paws and the 2 dew claws were all successfully manicured and treats for good behaviour duly given to her. One VERY happy and relieved owner. Thank you Wahl! Conclusion:This is a BRILLIANT product and I thoroughly recommend it. At a current price of £11.99 on Amazon, it is a snip!I would advise that when you use this on your pet touch the claws with the grinder and only use in short bursts of a couple of seconds or so and KEEP CHECKING to ensure you do not get too near to the quick. NO pressure is needed, just put the grinder lightly against each claw whilst gently holding your pet's paw. Cats will need only the very lightest of touches.I recommend a 'little and often' usage so that it is part of regular grooming and this way the quick should not get too long and the manicure sessions will be shorter and less arduous. If you are wondering about "Maisy", she is terrified by motor noises so I was not able to use it on her yet. She is a dog that even under 'knock down' IV sedation at the Vet, she will 'jump' when the fur had to be clipped for blood to be taken! If she ever lets me use this grinder on her claws, I know it will give a great result because her claws are in a much better condition than "Amber's" and much smaller and finer.

I got this last year after getting my (older) german shorthair pointer who absolutely would not tolerate having her paws handled. Attempts to trim her rapidly overgrowing claws ranged from brute force holding her still (led to stressed, very upset dog), to waiting until she was fast asleep and sneaking the clippers in, but it was no use. The moment she even saw the clippers (even after trying to desensitize her to seeing them), she'd skulk off. The only thing left at this rate was going to be to have them done under sedation at the vet - an unnecessary stress and expense. So I tried a grinder as a last resort. The first time I used it, it stayed switched off and I merely worked on asking for her paw and gently touching the tip to each claw,at which point she'd get a piece of kibble for allowing it without pulling away. Within a couple of sessions we progressed to trying the same with the grinder turned on. Now (several months later), we're at a point where she'll tolerate the grinder enough to make a noticeable difference to her front claws (Back claws are still a strict no-go zone 98% of the time for her). If your pet has particularly long claws, it will take several short sessions with the grinder to get them back down to an acceptable level. In terms of the actual grinder itself: It comes with a range of different heads, varying in coarseness and a couple for buffing. I've switched to using the coarsest one that came with it for in order to get the job done as quickly as possible. Switching the heads can be a little fiddly to get the hang of. The cable is super long (far more length than I can ever see needing) which makes it easy for moving around when my dog decides to roll about and generally be uncooperative.CONS: It IS loud. Very loud. If you're having to grind a lot of claw down like me, or your pet has claws that can chip/flake, it also creates a lot of dust/bits which can fly off into your face if you're not careful. If using it for a long time, the vibration of the grinder will make your hand tingle for a little bit afterwards which can feel strange. It has no safety on it as such - the on/off button is one you slide rather than a simple hold-down-to-keep-on button, there's also no guard on the grinder to protect toes or prevent fur getting caught in the moving parts or to help measure how much claw to take off, so this must be done purely by eye/judgement.In conclusion, the Wahl Pet Nail Grinder is fantastic if like me you were desperate to find a last ditch attempt at trimming sensitive pets claws with minimal stress. I now have a dog who as soon as she sees it come out, knows to come sit up in front of me and give me her feet one at a time until we've worked her claws down a sufficient amount. They're still not perfect and she still can't stand the sight of the clippers, but the grinder has made a world of difference! I would hands down recommend this grinder to anyone desperately looking for a last ditch attempt at desensitising their dog to nail trimming, provided you're willing to work with your pet!

I was asked if I’d like to review Wahl Battery Nail Grinder and I said yes as our Pedi Paws that we normally use, the motor had died over the weekend, (we used this as our dogs hated their nails being cut). The Wahl Battery Nail Grinder arrived well packed from Amazon. When you open the grinder box besides the main machine you’ll find the instructions, two grinder attachment heads, (one is also inserted into the grinder machine) and five grinder paper heads, (one is already on the machine). The grinder requires two ‘C’ Batteries which aren’t included. To insert the batteries unscrew the bottom of the machine, place the two batteries inside and then screw the bottom back on.Having this cordless grinder you’ll find it’s a lot easier to use especially if your pet wriggle about,(the ones with plugs restrict you a lot and I don’t think they’re safe that’s why I won’t use them). :-)The nail grinder is easy to hold and light weight. When in use the motor isn’t too loud so it won’t frightened your pet. :-)You’ll also find that this grinder has a safety cap, (just like the other I used) which I think is great as it means only that nail gets filed down and your pets fur can’t get caught in it. The safety cap also catches your pets nail dust so that it doesn’t go all over the place. There are three different holes on the safety guard, so you can decided which is best for your pet’s nails. Besides filing your pet’s nails this also allows you to smooth and shape your pets nails if you desire, (I only use this on our dog’s main nails as I still cut their dew claws).Depending on how long our dog’s nails are we use it either for 30 or 60 seconds. Any longer than that the vibration can irritate your pets, (as we found out years ago the first time we used one). This grinder can be used for both dogs and cats. :-)I can highly recommend this as it does work and our dogs both like it and are relaxed when we use it. :-)

This nail grinder is a very good idea for dogs who don't like having their claws clipped. I tried it on our labrador who has very thick claws, impossible to cut without very strong clippers - normally her claws get worn down naturally walking on pavement, but her dew claws can be quite sharp. The grinder comes with a piece of sandpaper already fitted to the drum, plus spares. It requires two C-type batteries which are not included - unscrew the bottom of the device, pop them in and replace the cap.I would recommend reading the instructions carefully, especially how to avoid damaging the quick. There is a straightforward switch on the side of the device to turn it on and off easily. The protective end cap has slots in it of different sizes, to fit your pet's claw and prevent it contacting anything other than the claw. The grinder is surprisingly quiet and the noise did not bother my dog at all. However, as soon as it touched her claw, she really didn't like the sensation and pulled away very startled. It wasn't hurting her, and she willingly gave me her paw again for another try (which she wouldn't have done if it had hurt) but each time it made contact with her claw she pulled away and backed off. She is not normally a nervous dog, and I can clean her ears and teeth, examine between her toes, etc. without any problem, so I'm not sure how a nervous dog would react.Taking it slowly, with lots of treats and encouragement (and not restraining her at all) I did manage to smooth one claw, but it was a slow process and I can't say she liked it. I think I can get her used to this very gradually if I keep up the treats and encouragement, but it isn't an instant solution. I am going to persevere, as there may come a day when she's housebound due to injury or old age, and this is definitely going to be easier than trying to cut her claws.

Thanks to all the positive reviews I decided to try this and I am so glad that I did. My rescue dog arrived here with the attitude that her feet were very sensitive and whilst I could clip her claws she would tremble throughout the process making accurate avoidance of cutting the quick very tricky. To use this tool I knew that I would have to allow for a period of adjustment and de-sensitisation but thought that the potential for injury was less with this gadget than with hand held nail clippers and I hoped to win the dog over encouraged by reports of dogs sleeping! I was prepared for the noise factor mentioned so cooked a bit of liver as an extra special enticement and got out the clicker to help me to reinforce what I was asking the dog to do.The machine thankfully has a polishing tool which I thought I would never use but it has proved me wrong by being brilliantly safe to get the dog used to the machine's vibration touching her claws but with no harm occurring and helping to win her trust. I had thought to use the sandpaper attachment eventually but instead progressed to the smooth grinder which reduces the nails to fine dust quickly enough and I will save the rougher sandpaper for a later day. It took just three days of getting used to and we had a lovely set of short neat claws. Being human I half expected it to be quicker but after her initial reaction of 'you're not coming near me with that whirring thing' I took it extremely slowly so I think three days was very good. You can proceed slowly down the claw which takes away the stress of trying to get the clipper blade in the right place. I would recommend this tool to anyone as it leaves the nails smooth even if your dog doesn't mind clippers. The lead is long enough to be convenient about 12 feet long.

I really thought we would have to return the grinder as our Basset Hound puppy was absolutely terrified by it. Over a couple of weeks I desensitized her by doing the following;leaving the grinder lying around when we were there to supervise her so she got familiar with it(grinder unplugged), feeding her treats from the hand I held the grinder in (grinder switched off), then touching her nails with the grinder (switched off), turning the grinder on briefly when she was around, feeding a treat from the hand I held the grinder in whilst it was switched on. I spent a few minutes with her every day with the grinder. We built up by doing a nail at a time at first, she now lies on her bed chewing a Dentastix, very relaxed with no fear at all, whilst I grind all her claws. This is a great product, you may just need to take things slowly to build confidence but it is absolutely worth the effort. All the attachments are stored in a compartment in the body of the grinder, I did find them a bit tricky to remove from the clip holding them in place as it`s a tight fit. I personally only use the emery style grinders rather than the stone grinders as I read somewhere the stones can get hot during grinding and may be uncomfortable for the dog. The cable is extremely long which is really useful. The grinder is a little noisy but nothing more than I expected an electric grinder to be! You do not need to apply much pressure, simply let the grinder do it`s job just `stroking` it over the nail. Very pleased with the Wahl smartgroom nail grinder.

I bought this nail grinder for my (at the time) 9 year old, English Bulldog. She's had a long history of bad experiences with the vets, which managed to transfer itself into a fear of getting her nails trimmed and it got the to the point where she would get a bit aggressive if she knew a nail cutter was being used on her.I bought this to try a new approach and it's great - the rotating part moves so fast that she doesn't even feel it cutting her nails, it's just as if I'm pressing something against her - what used to scare her the most is the massive amount of pressure placed on the nails from the guillotine type cutters. The product itself is plug in, which I think is perfect as there's no need to faff around with batteries.I've bought grinders before that were of poor quality and didn't actually make any difference to my dog's nails, and frustrated her more. She doesn't notice that I'm even using this. There are also different attachments depending on the type of pet and size of the nails so it's really versatile. The handle is comfortable to hold in the hand whilst holding your pet's paw in the other. I recommend this generally to anyone with a pet as opposed to a guillotine type cutter, but especially to those who have pets that are scared of having their nails trimmed. Although more expensive than some other nail grinders, this is the best one I could have bought.

Bought this as a last resort. Wish I had found this 11 years ago when my dogs were still pups, because I cannot fault it. My 2 Springer Spaniels fight tooth and claw to avoid having their nails done, and they were in a mess. Wasn't sure that this would work when nothing else had. They were a little nervous at first, but nowhere near as bad as they used to react when the manual nail clippers used to come out. Using this product, they actually ended up laying down almost asleep while I did their nails. No stressing at all, which is so much better for them. No guilty feelings for me either, which was a first. I was totally amazed!! Other reviews say that this is a noisy product, but I didn't find it so.Yes, it does make a noise, it is electric after all, but I thought it was reasonably quiet in operation. It just buzzes a little. My dogs are almost always on a soft surface either indoors or out in the fields. As we don't do a lot of walking on pavements their nails do tend to grow quite long because they are not wearing them away, but I will never have to worry about this again. Try it, I think you will be as pleased as I hve been. Only thing is I would have liked a few more bits of information about what head to use for which purpose, as the instructions aren't very specific. Buy it, try it - worth every penny.

I used this for the first time yesterday, and it has made my life SO much easier. My dog seems to have very fast growing nails! He mostly gets walked on grass so I suppose his nails don't get ground down at all - so for me this is a fantastic product. Before, I used to cut his nails using guillotine clippers and then manually file the last 1 mm or so (to avoid rough edges and accidentally cutting the quick). Now I can literally just use this device to file his nails down. It saves all the physical effort, is quicker, gives a better finish AND is much less likely to hurt the dog.I allowed my dog to get used to the noise (which isn't that loud, but inevitably will make some dogs nervous)- so a few days before I turned it on and used let him sniff and realise it's nothing to be frightened off and gave him a treat. Then when it came to actually cutting/grinding his nails he was absolutely fine with the noise! The product comes with several attachments which are in a compartment on the back of the main device (I nearly returned it because I thought they hadn't sent everything!). It also includes several replacements of the 'sand paper'.I would highly recommend this product! The only risk you have is the noise element which may put some pets off...but I'd say the upside is worth this risk.

I bought this after buying a slightly more expensive USB chargeable cordless and quiet grinder that had good reviews. However it was not really powerful enough for my large dog's claws and it stopped charging after only one use.Anyway I have just tried this on doggo and it is brilliant. Pretty much like a DIY multi-tool but in miniature (can't imagine wielding a DIY tool whilst handling my dog's claws!)It has a safety mechanism where if you put too much pressure on or slip the tool on to something like material e.g. clothing it will cut out until you remove it or relax the pressure. This grinder is noisy but despite her hatred of the vacuum cleaner, my dog doesn't mind drill noises etc.so the noise does not bother her. She is still coming to terms with having her nails trimmed (she is a rescue and requires patience and confident handling) but I am having 100% greater success with grinding tools than with regular clippers.I have only tried the large grinding tool thus far although the other ones look just as good, and I like that they all pack away neatly into the back of the device. Very handy so as to not lose them!

I have a GSD and he absolutely hates the nails clippers to a point where he wont let anyone touch his nails, it has taken me a couple of weeks to get him to let me use the grinder, however well worth the effort. I got him to let me touch his nails one at a time for a treat just once a night for about 3 days with the product being switch off. I then turned it on and stroked his paws and nails for another week not using the product but getting him used to it being next to him touching nails each time I positively rewarded him. Over the next few days I tried it out on a nail at a time. It only takes a small amount off at a time so if you pet has long nails 10 seconds every night on each nail will slowly get them down.I am long way off where they need to be but we have massive progress, now we can do all front nails in about a minute every day and he waits till the end because he knows he gets a treat. I hope this review is helpful as i was very unsure that he would even let me anywhere near his paws again, slow steps for nervous dogs works wonders and I have had a postive experience.

This has been brilliant for my two rescue dogs. One of my dogs was pretty much in a pen for well over a year I think, with not much exercise. Her nails were really long and looked uncomfortable. I was reluctant to clip them because the nails are black and I was afraid of causing her more pain (she has been beaten in the past). This has been brilliant though as we use chicken for a bribe, I do her nails and my husband feeds her the chicken. She really doesn't mind. We are taking our time - doing a little every couple of weeks and her nails really do look better. She also finds walking on slippery floors better as well. I am honestly glad I found this product and delighted that my dogs are ok when I am working on their nails.A couple of good things are that if you press too hard (and its not that hard) the tool stops. There are a variety of different grades of sandpaper so you can do a quicker job with the coarser grade sandpaper to get it over quick. I machine makes a noise but I don't think its excessive. Well worth the money and would recommend.

This product certainly does the job, that said my dogs hates anything going near his nails, I'd imagine it's similar to the dentist for us, he gets the same look of terror as me when the dental assistant calls me through to the "chair" every time I get the clippers out of the cupboard. I had been using. A battery powered grinder also from Amazon but it was just too underpowered and caused the process to be more drawn out then necessary, this grinder is far more efficient, at a price.... it sounds like a Diesel engine compressed into an electric toothbrush, using the dentist analogy again my dogs face when I fired this thing up was quite a picture, similar I'd imagine to my dentist telling me he'd just got back from B&Q for his dental supplies, black and decker drills are just more effective. If your dog is sensitive to LOUD noises I'd avoid this product, if you've a puppy and unsure the next time you're near a bus stop sit him by the engine and ask the driver to rev it up, that should tell you if this product's for you.Good but loud.

Like a lot of dog owners I have a dog who doesn't like having his nails clipped. Some reviewers said it was noisy, although I don't find it particularly loud, some dogs who are noise sensitive might need longer to get used to it.It arrived today and already I've filed down and shaped the nails on two of my Greyhounds paws (Greyhound aka biggest babies ever when it comes do having things done!) The other two paws I plan to do tomorrow in a second session as not to overdo it as he was so "brave" today. He has real problems with nails/feet, hates having them cut - but he didn't mind the Grinder one bit, although I did have someone on hand with smooths just in case! I can also say the nails that I did do today look fabulous! He has mostly black nails which have always been a nightmare to clip, and once you get the hang of it, it's so easy!If like me you've been searching for a nail clipping solution that didn't involve the vet and/or an unhappy dog, you should seriously try this. Probably one of the best things I ever bought!

It took me a bit to work out how to use this as mine did not come with an instruction booklet. I tested it on my own nails first, too, before using it on my dogs. I got it because traditional clippers tend to pinch the quick, which can be painful for dogs. This made nail time a nightmare with my female, who I would have to muzzle before hand to stop her from fear biting me. It was always so traumatic...for all of us. My vet recommended this...and man am I ever glad she did.At first the noise put them off. My female was the most skittish, but once they realized it didn't hurt they quickly accepted it as part of their grooming regime- treats, cuddles and praise worked wonders for this.My male is still not a big fan but my skittish female just lays on her back and goes to sleep. It's quick, efficient and allows me to keep their nails under control, unlike some of the tv battery operated models which were utter crap. After nearly a year of using it, it's still working like a dream.Highly recommend this product.
