Used to have the older two bike version (9502) of this carrier and was so impressed that i bought the 3 bike version(9503). I've done a review on amazon for the 9502 as well.Again I found this carrier quite straight forward to assemble, and it only took a little while to complete.Fits onto the towbar by a simple 'cup' bracket that has a single bolt holding it. The bolt has a gnurled surface that allows it to be finger tightened, though you the need to use the supplied 19mm spanner (or one of your own) to tighten the bolt fully. Once again i found this to be quite easy. Note the 19mm bolt seems to have changed a bit and now has a flange on it that may make fitting the 'lock' (not supplied)a bit difficult. I ended up swapping for the old bolt. Best to check!Relatively easy to fit the bikes to.I found i needed to put one arm through the frame holding the bike, whilst i put a strap round the upright on the carrier and the bike frame to hold it in place. once in place the straps could be threaded around the wheels on the carrier to hold it more securely and then adjust the upright strap to ensure everything is held firmly. for peace of mind, you can also add extra straps round the upright and other bikes. Fiited two adult mountain bikes and a childs bike easily. Have also fitted 3 adult road bikes, though needed to move saddle heights to ensure all 3 fitted, may not be a problem for othersThe carrier is tiltable to allow access to the boot/hatch, though i understand that this may not be the case on all cars, especially some of the people carrier types. I've so far used it on a 11 plate Skoda Octavia with detatchable Swan neck towbar with no issues, if in doubt as to whether yours will be ok, best bet is to try one before buying if possible, either ask a friend who has one, or some places that have them built may let you try so Halfords do, ask around!(Skidrive in Cambridge let me try the 9502 previously and also had it for a good price - this is a PRODUCT review)! The tilting mechanism has improved a little and isn't quite as fiddly, you need to loosen two nuts (with plastic grips on them) and then rotate the J shaped bolts out of the way, then tilt the carrier away from the car. The J bolts are now more of a U shape and seem to move easier. Handy tip was to fit childs bike closest to car.The new lighting board is fine, with improved cables, though as some have mentioned it could do with being just a tad longer, though it fits fine in my case and i use a couple of pieces of plastic covered wire (that were part of the packing) to route the wire along the rack. The new board also has tags which mean that you can fit a number plate without having to drill it. I actually preferred to drill holes in the number plates so that any potential number plate theif is put off.Got my 9503 via Amazon which actually came from Wiggle for a GREAT Price - the 9503 for cheaper than some are selling the 9502. Shop around and get a bargain.

This is a top quality product and comes with a quality light board. All you need is a number plate. But even here, the light board has plastic lugs which pop out and grab the number plate so you don't have to drill it or use sticky pads.It may take a while to build confidence in the rack as it is quite simply grabbing hold of just the tow ball. It's crucial therefore to tighten the clamp bolt to the manufacturers specs. I might see if I can get hold of a long socket so I can use a torque wrench. The only thing I would ask Thule to do is provide a longer lighting lead. Our 7 pin sockets are hidden beneath the bumber, like many 'concealed' systems these days. The Thule lead just won't reach so we have to use a coiled extension lead which means additional expense and hassle. This is a minor niggle though

Very good quality product. The design is much much better than roof mounted bars or a rear clip on rack - I've owned them all. No bodywork scratches. Hooks up in 5 mins flat. Had £3k of bikes on the back with confidence, and "just about" not rubbing on each other (3 road bikes). Power lead just long enough with an exposed hook up (could be 3 inches longer). I have a detachable tow bar and this rack works well on my new BMW 3 series saloon (e90)- electrics connect without an extension and boot is openable without having to tilt the rack back.4 stars not 5? - my friend has a Thule tow bar rack that has a "handle" that clamps the rack to the tow bar rather than having to tighten up the large "bolt".Minor niggle and to be honest not worth spending an extra £200 or so!Top notch product.

You couldn't want for anything more from a cycle carrier, it does exactly what it says in the description.Very easy to assemble and even easier to attach to the car.My primary need was a cycle carrier that does not attach to the vehicles bodywork and this attaches very securely directly to the towbar with a very clever and easy to attach clamp, I actually use a 19mm ratchet spanner which makes attachment to the car even easier. The mountain bikes attach very firmly with the provided straps and with the tilt mechanism I can still open the tailgate fully on my Volvo V50 with the bikes fitted. If there is a negative, the only one I can find is that the lightboard doen't incorporate a rear foglight.Overall I rate this carrier very highly.

I have used this item for a couple of weeks now and have just driven over 1,000 miles with it on the back of my car. In terms of value for money, there is absolutely nothing to compare with this. It is simple to put together, is very solid when on the car and probably the best part is when you take the bikes off you can simply put it in the boot of your car (I do have a Mazda 6 Estate, but am sure it will fit inside a smaller boot) and go off riding. Absolutely outstanding value for money and the usual great service from Amazon after the first one went missing.

A very well made bike rack, which comfortably handles three bikes. Other reviews on build quality and security of bikes are accurate. Why only 4 stars ? One niggle for me is the securing bolt - if the rack came with a ratchet type spanner then it would be perfect, as it is a little bit fiddly to tighten the bolt. (only a little fiddly, and I'm probably being over-fussy). Optional lock to stop the bolt being undone by a thief is a sensible addition, but again at this price point would be nice if this was included in the main kit.Certainly would recommend.

Love it. Took a while to assemble initially, but once complete it fits to the car easily and does the job perfectly.Fitted to Alfa 156 Sportwagon with a removable towball, no issues with rear access as it can fold forward, this is easier than i thought and secure.I can operate this on my own with no problem, and would say to anyone looking at these type of bike racks that they are very well made and securely fit onto the tow ball (I was a bit sceptical!).Not sure why you would go for the more expensive options, this does the job perfectly

Absolutely amazing the way it attaches so easily and so securely and so speedily to the tow ball on my car. The mechanism that allows the carrier to tip so as to access the rear door on my Zafira, when the bikes are loaded, does rock ever so slightly slightly but I shall add a couple of additional straps to ensure this doesn't get worse over time. Fitting the bikes to the carrier is easy peezy with just three quick release straps per bike, one through each wheel and one to restrain the bike frame to the fold down vertical supports.

Really please with this purchase. The carrier itself seems to defy physics, it's surprisingly sturdy when connected to the tow bar. However a point to note, if you have a detachable hidden tow bar as one other reviewer mentioned, it's unlikely that the electrics cable will reach. You can find a suitable extension lead for around £12.50 by searching for "Trailer Extension Lead EES11" on google. It's just a shame that Thule do not make a strong locking device to lock it to the towbar.

A very well thought out piece of kit. We drove from Bedford to Aberdeen and back and the bikes were rock steady the whole time. My doubts about the towball mounting were completely unfounded - the towball clamp is very strong indeed. We only have two bikes at the moment but I decided that the three bike carrier offered more flexibility for little extra cost. It also gave a bit more boot clearance when carrying two bikes. Overall, a highly recommended product.

Excellent bikerack, covered 2000 miles with 3 bikes on it. Was unable to open boot with rack of bikes tilted, but was prepared for this. Easy to build and fit but had to buy connector adaptor for Zafira electrics. Bikes felt secure through out trip and car wasn't scratched or view disrupted as with back window rack. Bikes removed easiy unlike roof mount. Classed as bike rack on ferry crossing even though sticks out considerably.

It's clearly not as good as the top of the range. The tilt doesn't really tilt that much so opening the boot isnt actually possible on our car (Honda jazz). Dead Easy to fit tho you do need a spanner. The light rack is a little flimsy but works OK. Putting bikes on is easy and there's no movement or wobbling while driving. All in all good purchase but if you want super duper you'll have to get the more expensive models.

Just bought this item to go on the tow bar of my VW passat estate. The thule 9503 is an excellent piece of kit. it didn't take long at all to assemble the carrier as the instructions were very clear. The tilt function is also very good as it allows access to the boot with out taking the bikes off. I recommend getting the THULE 957 Bike Carrier lock for 9503, its a simple lock that stops theft of the carrier.

Why didn't we buy one of these years ago. Put in on your tow bar boredom and Locked ready to go. The hassle we used to have tieing them to the rear door and the couple of marks it left. Know it's so easy the bikes come with us with the dogs it's that quick and a great make. Don't go passed this. It was out of our budget but it's paying off. Bikes are getting used and we are into winter. Brilliant thanks!!!

I bought this from Halfords and paid them to put it together for me - much simpler !! Have only used it for one mtb so far and it performs well, bike held firmly with not much movement. My one complaint is that the spanner supplied by Thule for tightening the towbar ball nut is so soft it was useless after about 3 outings - strongly recommend any purchaser buys a proper round spanner right from the off.
