I had a good look around the internet, read several reviews and watched countless videos before choosing this bike carrier, and have to say I am pleased with this choice. I originally intended getting a much cheaper "hang on" version, but to be honest, after watching the safety videos on you-tube where even in slow speed collision bikes were banging off the car, flying off the frames or coming through the rear windscreen, it wasn't rocket science to spend that bit extra money for something that secures the bikes in a safer, rigid position. In use, the carrier is a tad heavy to lift onto the towbar but Im a 5'4" and not very strong female so guess most will find it easy enough. Once on the towbar, securing the carrier is very easy and involves turning a large incorporated "handle" then locking it in position with a key.Similarly, in removing the carrier it is momentarily heavy to lift off so easier to place straight on ground, folds flat then carry it...I even found a video showing how to carry it correctly so it doesn't bash your legs! The tilt mechanism is fantastic and sooo easy to use. I have a 2009 skoda fabia estate and there is plenty clearance to fully open the boot lid, as well as enough space between the carrier and the boot to stand and lift things in and out the boot without having to overreach or twist.Similarly, the carrier folds flat and stores in the boot of my car so it is out of sight when I head off on the bike....extra peace of mind that it will be there when I get back.Im impressed with the sturdiness of the frame. I had my doubts as to how well a carrier would grip the towbar but it and the bike have stayed firm...next week we're all off so I'll see how it manages fully loaded with three bikes then.Positives:- sturdy build and feels safe and secure to use- quick and easy to fit and remove from car...takes me about seven minutes to fit the carrier to car and the bikes to the carrier- tilt mechanism is great and gives plenty clearance on a skoda fabia estate- carrier can be locked to the towbar for extra security- carrier can be stored in the boot when not in useNegatives:- biggest gripe at this price - it only came with one locking tommy nut with the option to purchase additional locking tommy nuts to secure the second and third bikes to the frame. Bear in mind though that although the bikes will then be secured to the frame and the carrier already secured to the tow bar, the frame (and therefore any bikes attached to it) will only be attached to the carrier base by two easily removed tommy nuts, so an extra two required for that. In total, four locking tommy nuts required to lock all three bikes to the frame and the frame to the carrier base, at an additional cost of £45.00. Come on Thule, at this price for a carrier all the locking nuts should come as standard!!- seven point electrical socket which I believe is standard for UK cars...brake and indicators work fine but no reverse lights which would have been useful- Unless loaded with bikes, the carrier's side profile is weak and could do with some reflectors, lights or something. Whilst waiting to load up my son's bike and parked nose first within the confines of a regular parking space, another driver almost drove straight into the side of the carrier...having looked at the carrier from their point of view it doesn't jump out and shout "Im here!!"...maybe jazzing it up a bit will help?

We looked at an array of brands such as Mont Blanc, Witter, Peruzzo and Thule. The Thule one that we looked at was the most expensive but I’ve heard nothing but good things about them. The Velo Compact 3 is designed to carry three bikes as well having an option to add on a fourth. The marketing and some reviewers say its lightweight – strictly speaking it weighs 4/5 to that of a sack of potatoes and that to me isn’t light but it is a compact unit which is great for storage. The weight does reflect the build quality – it feels very solid and robust. The only bits that do concern me are the plastic parts such as the light board section but it would have probably increased the weight and cost. The carrier comes with two keys. The arms and tow bar handle share the same key.Assembly is straightforward. Fix the U bar and the locking arms. Make sure you buy another number plate as well. You can use the plastic clips that are provided in the middle of the number plate section. To fit the VeloCompact onto the tow bar, make sure the handle is extended all the way up. You’ll probably need to adjust it slightly to get a good fit. Quite a bit of force is required to push down the lever to completely secure the carrier. Once done, hook up the 7-pin connector to the tow bar electrical socket. You may need a 7 pin to 13 pin adapter depending on how the electrics are set-up for the tow car. Slide out the lights and the bike rails. Place the bike on the rail, secure the arm and then the straps. The locking nuts and tow bar handle provide added security compared to the EuroRide equivalent where you need to buy the nuts as an optional extra. We fitted three bikes - a mountain bike, a hybrid and a racing bike and travelled to the Forest of Dean. Not one movement. The bikes were just as secure as from the moment we set off. My brother-in-law was very impressed and decided to get a tow bar attached to his car so he can borrow my carrier. All he needs to do is swap the number plate out.We paid £360 but not from Amazon. It was on special offer at the time and it’s good to see that Amazon have dropped their price. The Thule VeloCompact 3 maybe expensive but it’s a case of what you pay is what you get - a quality bike carrier that is going to last years.

Update...2017Rack now 4 years old... and in perfect working order. There is not a single thing loose or broken, which is amazing when you think of the hammering it gets. Rack is rock solid over speed humps etc... all lights still working.2013Came a week early...good start !I had previously bought an Exodus tow-carrier from Halfords, but that was a heavy dinosaur compared with this rack..The Halfords (4 bike ) rack took over 2 hours to build, and unbuild (it was useless at attaching to my tow bar and was incorrectly put together)... the Thule was on the back of my car in about 10 minutes... cost was roughly the same !.Pay the extra !Build quality surpassed my exp. it is very stable...even over speed bumps, and the lighting rack works a treat...SPECIAL NOTE... This is not mentioned in any advert, or in the instructions....When the bike carrier is attached and the lighting-board-cable is attached, there is a loud beep inside the cabin of my car when you indicate left or right, or use hazards, I thought this was a fault, but it turns out it is a safety feature on all cars since 1999...apparently it is to remind you that you are towing a trailer, I find it really useful as my indicators are normally inaudible. It is a feature of all racks, not just the Thule... needless to say, the Halfords rack didn't have this safety feature.Rack came with two Thule locks ... one on the tightening mech, so that you can't remove the rack. And one on one of the support bars knobs... I bought another couple of locking knobs, so that I can lock all 3 bikes.Hope this helps.Keith

new to tow bar mounted bike carriers and was concerned about security and rigidity of device on the tow bar. shouldn't have been worried as it is very solid on the tow bar and easily attached. not the lightest to put on but its not a flimsy device and doesn't take much effort to get it on the ball quickly. its a one person job. theres a lock on the ball and the longest arm. you can fold down the vertical for easier carrying but i dont think i'll bother as it takes too long. have got it wall mounted in my garage on 4 brackets for storage. 2 would have suffice but i was being paranoid as the brackets are into breeze blocks not bricks.the tilting mechanism is surprising easy and effective and there is plenty of space for the tailgate to open (honda crv 2013).took a leisurely 15 minutes to put it together. biggest problem was getting the extra number plate supplied with the car to fit the lighting board as honda dealer have their advertising on a circa 8mm lip on the bottom of the plate and i had to plane half of it off. in summary its a quality product that is easy to use. (3 bike model). highly recommended. would only consider the very expensive version that folds up if i was using it every day.

After having used roof mounted bike carriers before and also the portable strap on to the boot carriers (which nearly fell off after a strap failed), we took the plunge on a tow bar fitted bike carrier. We have just been on a 550 mile trip in the car with 3 bikes on the back and the Thule bike carrier works really well. Easy to get in the boot (Qasqai) when you need to.In addition we purchased 2 locking knobs, one attached to one fo the three bike mounting arms and the other to the frame where you can collapse it for storage. As per another review, it seems expensive of Thule to sell these seperately at circa £20 for 2 when spending the best part of £280-300 for one of these carrriers, however worth it for piece of mind. We also used d-locks to secure the bikes on the carrier to put off any would be thieves. This worked well. We had a standard swan neck Witter removable tow bar fitted to the car. Happy to recommend this product, especially of you have 2 or more bikes that you would normally put on the roof.

Had an old hanging rack which didn't fit a Discovery well so decided I needed a change. Did some research and settled for this.Whilst expensive, you get what you pay for. This is a good bit of kit but why it doesn't it come ready assembled? I would also go with others; why doesn't it come with all locks and the one key system? You have to buy an additional 4 locking Tommy nuts and a 6 lock one key system to make the rack and load secure.Simplicity itself to mount and dismount as are the bikes. Little bit awkward to carry but not too bad.ProsVery simple to mount on the car and to take off againEasy to put the bikes on and they seem very secureVery good and easy tilt system to get int he bootCons.Itis a bit heavy but manageableThe fold down hoop is a hassle to fold for storingYou have to have the first bike in facing right otherwise the front gearset fouls the hoop

Bought this to go on my BMW 5 Series with factory fit tow bar. I also bought locking nuts and an 13-7 pin adapter, both reviewed separately. This bike carrier is relatively easy to build up, though I would suggest you take care with the electrical wiring so it doesn't get caught up when you screw it all together. The tools you need come with the carrier and work fine and you should allow about 30 minutes to comfortably put it all together. The instructions are basic but if you are familiar with self assembly furniture this is a breeze and you wont have any screws or washers left over !!!As for fitting it took me a couple of goes to get it on right but once on it looks like it will do the job well.I'll update once I've used it.

Not a person to normally leave reviews but I thought this was worth it. Been hesitating for a while on getting a tow bar but found a really good deal on Tow Bars UK. So then it meant finding a half decent rack without paying the earth. This Thule rack came within the budget. Was a quick purchase due to visiting BPW at the weekend with two DH bikes. I have noticed people saying about bikes not fitting but I have two DH bikes that fit perfectly both with large frames. The carrier is extremely sturdy and the tilt mechanism is great. I have tried my XC bike on this too and it fits fine and has a different frame shape. All in all this is a great product, good quality from Thule and great service from Amazon.

Assembly wasn't any trouble and the visual instructions are nice and clear so it only took me about 30 minutes and it was ready to go. Mounting it on the towing hitch of my Landrover was pretty straightforward although the rack is quite heavy and it would probably be better to have some assistance getting it into position. Once tightened in position the cycle rack is very solid and doesn't wobble at all and mounting a bike on it is simplicity itself. The lights and indicators work well and are nice and bright so I am well satisfied with that. The instructions for locking the carrier to the tow ball are a bit confusing and could be a bit clearer.

Very easy to fit and mount bikes. Only used once but feels very solid. I recommend that you buy the addtional locks for the towball fitting and bike support arms to improve security.Other checks before purchase:1.The distance between the wheel supports is just about ok for my gents tourer but if I bought again I would check and go for one of the Thule range with extendable wheel holders such as the Thule Velocompact 2.2. If you are looking to carry two electric cycles you will probably need a bigger model than this3. Check the maximum nose weight for your cars towball agains the weight of the rack + the two cycles you will carry

Fairly happy with this item, feels well made and secures on the car nicely, had to buy a 13 pin to 7 pin adapter however as my car has the newer 13 pin power plug.Quality Control could also be better as the drivers side indicator did not work, had to strip back the plug and re-seat the pin as it was a lot easier that trying to return something of this size.Still it was a lot cheaper than buying from somewhere like halfords,Adapter I bought here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005UUJ3DU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Bike carrier is easy to put together with the supplied tools, fits to the tow bar easily and securely. I put my 29” wheel and 27.5” wheel mountain bikes on and they fit securely. Minor downside is the bikes are close and touching around the hubs is likely for similar sized bikes. This is not an issue for me as I normally carry one of my kids bikes with mine. Tilt is great allowing very easy access to the boot.

I have been looking at these for a while, and finally got a van with a Tow Bar fitted. What a great product. I was worried about how it fixed to the actual tow bar ball joint, but have no fear. It is solid and a dream to use as an avid mountain biker. So much easier than roof bars, and within 5 minutes your are off cycling, and keeps all the mud and crap off the roof of your car as well. Perfect.

27.6.2017

A well made, well engineered product. Maybe there has been some cost cutting in some areas, the straps are not the heavy duty plastic that I have seen before and I think the frame that the 3 bike holders attach to could be folded easier to save time. However, a good product that I recommend, that my bikes feel safe and secure on when travelling.

Like another buyer I cant understand the poor reviews, people being a bit pedantic I assume. Product arrived on time and was no problem to assemble, no problem with the towbar, electric plug worked as soon as I plugged it in. Have tried it for real today and it worked a treat. A good serious bit of kit that does the job
