If Saris says you should use these on your car, get them. I thought I could get away without using them with my Saris Bones 2. I probably COULD, but I was risking the normal hooks coming off if I stopped suddenly and the weight shifted forward. The hatch huggers can't come off, not without ripping through the sheet metal of your car. (And they are big and soft so that's not going to happen)They are easy to put onto the Bones straps. Just remove the original straps with the hooks and replace them with these. Takes 2 seconds to swap them out. Once they are installed on the car the rack is super secure and CANNOT fall off the car even if the other 4 straps fail. (You wouldn't want to drive with the other 4 straps broken. The rack will flop all over the place. But it won't fall to the ground. So you'd have time to safely pull over to the side of the road and fix it without having to run into the street to retrieve whatever's left of your bike)I have also found that the Bones 2 rack is easier to install on the car with the hatch huggers than with the metal clips. I can put the hatch huggers onto the trunk first and they hold the rack up while I attach and tighten the other 4 straps. Without the huggers the upper hooks fall off while I adjust the lower straps and it's more difficult to put it on.All in all, for a product I was slightly annoyed that I had to buy to make another product work properly, these have been a very good experience.

I'm not struggling with a rear hatch, I'm struggling with trunk seam clearance. I'd tried a 3 bike Bones some years ago but could never get the middle/side anchors to work in my trunk seams without bulging or bending the trunk lid wherever they were placed. The top and bottom anchors were fine, but the side wouldn't go without force/damage. I'm not sure they had these then, but wow they sure work for me now on a 2 bike bones... With the trunk slightly ajar, I place the top anchors on the trunk lid with the rack itself sitting lightly on top. Then I get slack in the side 'Huggers' strap and drop one down along each edge of the trunk lid into the trunk, then I move on and adjust the bottom anchors at the bottom edge of the trunk at the bumper. At this point I shut the trunk. Making sure the 'Huggers' have enough slack to accommodate for the motion without coming out of the trunk, I'll slightly raise the lid and shut it down firmly. I take up the 'Hugger' strap slack to snug the block up against the inner side of the lid, tighten at the buckle and I'm good to go. Everything cinches up tight and the rack is rock solid. I couldn't use this rack, or maybe any rack, without it. Hope this helps!

Not much to say about them. Are they really necessary... not really, you can just drop the top clip inside your car and then close the "trunk", and it will work exactly the same way.In my car, Hyundai Accent SE (Hatchback) the 2 soft rolls rest inside the back cabin, on top, so having either the metal top bracket or this soft hugger make no real difference.I realized that after I bought them, and since I already have then I'm using it.Also, I believe it wold be easy to make something similar with the back brakes, two small pieces of wood, like a broom, and some insulation tape, the one that's soft.I rated them 5 stars cause they do their job, the fact that you can use the original brackets or make one or self for really cheap, doesn't mean they are bad.

My Saris Bike Rack, purchased for a Toyota Matrix did not work with my new Prius. The metal clips didnt fit the hatch back spacing. Switching the straps to the hatch huggers solved that problem. The rubberized anchors fit inside the hatch and the Saris unit can then be securely strapped to the Prius configuration. It takes a bit more work as I dont like leaving the rack on the car when not in use so each time I ride I need to undo the straps so the main unit can be stored. You also have to get the side huggers in the right position before closing the hatch and that takes a bit of practice to get right. Still and all it has allowed me to keep using the Saris rack which I really like.

Aim was to transport my bike 15 miles to the trail using Lexus RX330 or Mitsubishi Eclipse. A hitch and bike holder was an expensive option, while a roof rack was difficult for me to load the bike and not practical. Out of all bike trunk racks that I was able to review, only Saris Bones 805 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack would fit my SUV and Eclipse using Hatch Huggers. Plus it's elegant design and recycled material. Delivery was prompt as usual from Amazon.com. Installed product in 15 minutes alone after reviewing the product video on web site as suggested by reviewer. The rack and Hatch Huggers proved to be sturdy and stable. I am very happy with the outcome and highly recommend it.

The Germans apparently don't like hatch racks so they made it fairly difficult to find a good strap system. I bought these because I didn't want to risk the stock straps popping loose on a bump or something. I suppose these really aren't even necessary but they sure do provide more peace of mind. They keep my Bones 3 snug as heck and I go over Monarch Pass every weekend back and forth; its a fairly curvy pass with a nice amount of speed. All in all; totally happy with the purchase. Totally recommend if you're having trouble finding a good fitting hatch rack.

I use a Saris Bones rack on a Honda Insight, and while the standard clips may have worked just fine, I ordered the hatch huggers for a little extra peace of mind - which is exactly what they provide. With the hatch huggers, I don't worry about the clips scratching or chipping the paint/glass; I also feel better knowing that they are completely secure, as the foam ends rest inside the car. If you have any concerns about attaching a trunk rack to your hatchback, give these a shot, it's a small price to pay to protect some costly items - your car and bike(s).

ok, this worked out awesome until the rains came this winter. BEWARE my car rear hatch now leaks and im fairly certain the leak has occurred because the integrity of the rubber seal around my trunk window was compromised. I know have mold to clean up all over the inside of my car because the water leaked into the rear tire well....and kept accumulating for months. I now have to have my trunk seals replaced ans my car detailed and cleaning because of the mold! Product does its job and is great but beware of weather conditions and rain after using this.

I put 2 bikes on my Saris Rack when mounted on my cars. Toyota, Chrysler. The Saris original iron hooks fit not well and too hard on the awkward , slanted door design on the back of my Chrysler. The Huggers give a direct, sure soft fit locked under the Chrysler's trunk door when close. And is an easier way to manage a secure bike mount when I put my 2 bikes on my Saris Trunk Rack. This is my second set. I bought a pair years ago, used it happily for years all over. For me, it's a must for my bike racks.

Depending on your vehicle they will require some creativity. But once you figure out the best place to set them they work well. I have a Veloster and there is a significant distance between the edge of the glass and the bike rack. But they hold well and keep the rack stable. Just be sure to pull them tight before loading the bike rack. The resistance caused by being closed between the hatch and vehicles body can fool you into thinking they are set in place good.

These are an essential addition to your Saris bike rack if you're worried about the standard straps damaging your car. I purchased the rack knowing that my car wasn't listed as compatible - rear boot spoiler being the main issue, but these huggers solved the problem,. The standard straps were fine but i was worried about the paintwork and the pressure placed on the spoiler. Problem solved! Went for two pairs and used the standard straps as backup. Perfect!

When I changed cars, my Bones 2 bike rack clips wouldn't fit into the top of the hatch on my SUV. I called Saris and they recommended these. And yes, they work great! They only downside is that you have to completely remove the top strap from you existing bike rack and you have to thread this through the top of the hatch and into the buckle each time. But it takes less than 20 seconds. Easy! And it solved my problem!

Having a hatchback is great, but putting a bike rack on a hatch back can be a pain. I have a small fin at the top of my hatchback so the clips don't always fit right. These are secure and easy to use. The only down fall is that you have to disconnect the strap from the bike rack to thread through the trunk space, otherwise, so easy! I might get a second pair for the side straps as they always fall down!

This product solved my problem exactly. My car is a hatchback and the top edge of the door opening is a plastic piece instead of a metal one. So placing the top hook on that top edge was very unstable and not strong enough.Using this item makes the bike rack usable for my car again.I have a Thule Passage trunk mount bike rack. not a Saris. The strap width is the same, so it is a direct fit.

A neighbor gave me a Saris Bones rack that I wanted to put on a Mini Cooper. This work perfectly for attaching it. They can become a little loose after a long drive, but they seem sturdy enough. It is a little bit of a hassle having to take them off of the rack every time you put it on/off, but I get to have a bike rack in a car not really meant with one in mind, so I consider it a win!
