I was a little sceptical about anyone needing a pencil specially designed for right or left-handed writers. That was until I saw our two youngsters trying them out. The six-year old is left-handed, and didn’t like the feel of it – naturally, because the grooves are designed for a right-handed writer – but the younger one loved it. The chunky, triangular shape and the little hollowed grooves helped him hold the pencil more firmly and steadily, and he loved using it.An unexpected endorsement for the pencil came when our youngest insisted that his grandfather should try it. Granddad has an age-related tremor in his hands and his grip is not as steady as it once was. However,he said that the pencil gave him more control with his writing, and could see how it would help a youngster. The best thing about the pencil – according to the youngest little scribe – was the small silver-coloured name strip at the top of the pencil. This is a well-designed pencil for youngsters learning to write.Update:I have now been provided with the left-handed version of these pencils free of charge. Our left-handed six-year old – mentioned above – has now tested the left-handed pencils. Although he’s bright as a button, he struggles a little with his writing. He absolutely loved these right from the start, and said that the little grooves felt very nice. After a little practice, his writing became neater and smaller – and it was obvious that the pencil was helping him. I was also given a little plastic pencil sharpener that had the thumb groove on the correct side for a left-handed child. The elder of our little scribes loved this almost as much as the pencil. We’ve never had a left-handed family member before, and these pencils have made me more aware of products that could help make ordinary tasks a little easier for him. These pencils – and the little sharpener – are very good, and I wholeheartedly recommend them.

These pencils are designed to support the right-handed child as they develop the motor grip needed to support handwriting, traditionally right-handed children have had an advantage as most stationery is designed for righties however, this doesn't guarantee the correct grip is developed and right handed children can struggle with the motor development too for various reasons and laziness is not necessarily one. These pencils are a more stealthy way of giving a child help with their grip development than other options such as rubber bands and triangle add ons to reduce the embarrassment if different from their table or friends. There is a skeletal and muscular knock-on effect from poor motor gripso these pencils have little grooves to support finger placement especially for righties and so are excellent to foster the correct grip to give righties a more comfortable writing experience and less risk of RSI or similar grip weaknesses associated with pinching movements as they get older.Despite being dominant right I have some ambidextrous abilities and there is an equal number of lefties in my family and so I'm very aware that my children may easily be one hand or the other and have so far allowed my daughter to choose her hands rather than placing in or passing to one hand in particular. So far she is completely ambidextrous with no preference for one side or the other and passes between hands during tasks too and so I have chosen to support this by looking at tools to support both hands whilst developing the motor skills involved in scribing. These are a great option for our rightie supplies to foster the correct grip necessary and give a smooth comfortable experience.I will invest in the colouring pencils too, hopefully she will have picked a side by then!

These pencils are designed to support the right-handed child as they develop the motor grip needed to support handwriting, traditionally right-handed children have had an advantage as so much of beginner writing materials and indeed most stationery is designed for righties but this doesn't guarantee the correct grip is developed and right handed children can struggle with the motor development too. There is also a skeletal and muscular knock-on effect from poor motor grip so these pencils have little grooves to support finger placement especially for righties and so are excellent to foster the correct grip to give righties a more comfortable writing experience and less risk of RSI or similargrip weaknesses associated with pinching movements as they get older.Despite the overwhelming majority of people worldwide being right handed (including myself) there is an equal number of lefties in my family and so I'm very aware that my children may easily be one hand or the other and have so far allowed my daughter to choose her hands rather than placing in or passing to one hand in particular. So far she is completely ambidextrous with no preference for one side or the other and passes between too and so I have chosen to support this by looking at tools to support both hands whilst developing the motor skills involved in scribing. These are a great option for our rightie supplies as she starts to move from scribbles to organised marks and onto writing as I find these lovely to hold to foster the correct grip necessary and give a smooth comfortable experience.I'm impressed enough to look into other parts of this range too!

I have to confess that I've never previously given much thought to using stationery which has been specifically designed for either right or left handed people and indeed haven't really noticed many products which are designed as such, with the exception perhaps being scissors. However, when I first picked up this pencil, I could immediately see the attraction as the grip was perfectly designed to suit the hand of a right handed person. This makes it quite a bit more comfortable to hold and to write with for prolonged periods of time. Unless you're trying to hold a right handed pencil in your left hand, in which case it isn't comfortable at all...The right handed pencil is very easy to identify, given it has a number of features which are unique to the right handed version, such as a red end and a large "R" at the end of the pencil. The attention to detail which Stabilo have given to these pencils is also fantastic and whilst I appreciate that it is very minor, the writing on the right hand version of the pencil goes in the opposite direction to the left handed version. This means that when you are holding each pencil in the appropriate hand, the writing is always the correct way up and is able to be read from left to right. I told you it was a small detail...In summary, I am actually rather impressed by these pencils, even though I'd previously been contented to use a normal pencil which is designed for everyone to use. However, now that I've tried these pens out, I think I could actually use them all the time...well, anything I use a pencil that is.

Some people are blessed with handwriting that is neat and legible; others are like me - handwriting so bad that I was asked several times over the years to change the pen that I was using in the hopes that my teachers could recognise what I have actually written. Thankfully today most of my work is done on the computer and as long as I don't use Comic Sans people can appreciate my ace writing. However, in schools they are still forced to use carbon that is not found in an ink cartridge and must learn to write with a pen and pencil. I always found my grip was wrong and this caused several of the issues I had, therefore the 'STABILO EASYgraph Handwriting Pencil'would have helped a lot. This pencil is aimed at the younger market around Primary school age. They come in right handed style and left handed - all this means is that the groves that are cut into the wood lean the right way for whichever preference. By slotting the side of your finger into the grove you are automatically given a slightly better way to grab the pencil; it encourages you to adopt the right grip. Even as an adult I found that it helped steady my hand slightly and that helped me to concentrate on making my handwriting a little more clear. For a very small child they may be a little big, but if they are starting to write independently at school, these pencils could work wonders.

The pencils arrive in a sealed packet, easy enough to get to and use. I was intrigued to see what the right handed pencils were like, universally I thought they were left or right. To me it appears the indent grips on the pen stem allow a nice easy grip and stays firmly in the hand without allowing this to slip out of the hand. This lends nice flexibility to adapt and write with the pencil in a fluid and easy manner with no resistance. Might seem strange but the pencil is nice quality to use. I use pencil's all the time at work and constantly note on sheets of paper and use colouring and various techniques to make my day clear to me. I write music notation on paper, observations, draw spider-graphs ,notes etc at home and pretty much I will be using pencils all the time 7 days a week. A good quality pencil is essential item, don't be tempted to buy cheap and get 10 pencils from pound-land, they are no match for a good quality pencil. This is a good quality pencil, if considering this is a worthwhile essential purchase. For children this is a particular good pencil and will encourage the imagination as it is visible on paper and allows development of ideas.. its just plain good pencil.

My daughter who is three and a half has been "writing" for a while but that's mainly been tracing letters and numbers. Now, she is starting to copy her letters and as she was holding her pens and pencils in an extraordinary number of configurations, I thought that this pencil might be useful for her.It has helped a lot. Rather than me just explaining where her fingers and thumb should go, she can see and feel because of the grooves in the pencil barrel. Her control over the pencil is much better and she is gaining in confidence. And it's specifically designed for a right handed person (there's also a left handed version). She still occasionally presses a little hard and breaks the end of the lead, but she is getting better all the time. And because this pencil (and the Stabilo Easystart pen she has) are helping her improve the way she holds her writing tools, her writing is improving too. I think the pencils are good value for money and with the grooves cut all along the barrel should last for a long time.Overall very useful and well worth having, especially if your little one is struggling with their handwriting.

These are a really well thought out product. I had no idea that anyone could improve something as wonderfully basic and fit for purpose as a pencil but someone has! These thicker than usual pencils have notches carved out all the way down the length of the pencil. The notches are in just the right position to enable anyone to hold the pencil using the right grip. This is a surprisngly difficult skill for little ones to master or remember (who hasnt seen the 'fist grip')The best thing about these pencils is they make the pencil more comfortable for anyone! The notches really are in the right place to make even a death grip on a pencil comfortable.I have no experience of left handedness but ican imagine that being able to get such a helpful item with the notches in the right place so the pencil can also be held in the left hand will be a revelation. The pencils are also a curved triangular shape so wont roll off the table (for pencil nerds this is a tragic occurance as it can snap the lead inside the pencil making it useless!).

As a SENCO (special needs coordinator) and a teacher familiar with nursery and reception I have seen and used a lot of "beginners" pencils as well as grips of various sorts to add onto regular pencils and I would say these are among my favourites ( along with this range https://www.amazon.co.uk/Faber-Castell-Grey-Easy-Eraser/dp/B0041BSV3W) the pencils are wider than a regular pencil, triangular and have slanted notches (facing appropriate direction for either right handers (as these are) or left handers. The result is that it is actually quite hard not to hold these with an appropriate grip, and the child (my 3.5 yo acted as Guinea pig)can apply decent pressure to paper and has a better control of the flow of marks they make.Where these excel is that the grooves go nearly all the way to the end so the good bit won't get sharpened away, and also they are not as obviously "special needs" as some of the add on grips which make a child's pencil look different from their peers.

The pencil was invented 500 years ago, so it's not the sort of thing you expect to see a new version of very often! I am right-handed and my wife is left-handed so we both tried these pencils out. The pencil has grooves along the barrel of the pencil which make it easier to grip and not slip out of your hands. To adults like us who have already mastered the art of writing, it didn’t make a huge difference and my wife could happily use it in her left hand. The pencil is more designed for children who are learning to write with the correct grip. The pencils are fatter than regular pencils but the writing thickness and colour is similar to a traditional pencil.I suppose the worry with giving these to children is they get used to them and struggle to use a normal pencil (a bit like the moment you take the stabilisers off their bikes). With that caveat, and assuming you are happy to give these to your children on a temporary basis, then I think they are a good learning aid.

This is a fat, sturdy pencil with dents cut into the length, and the dents correspond perfectly to the correct finger positions when gripping a pencil. I found it really comfortable to use, as the dents ensure that your fingers stay in the correct positions. When you sharpen the pencil you just need to use the dents further up, the dents go right up the length of the pencil so even when the pencil is quite short you can still use the dents. My son, who has hyper-mobile thumbs, has always had a weird pencil grip due to his thumbs. Using this pencil he can grip it correctly, although as he's not used to using this type of grip he finds it quite tiring. With use I'm sure he'll get used to it and thus write properly. It's a really good pencil for training children to have the correct grip.

I was a bit skeptical of how well this would work to help with handwriting, since pencil is a pencil, right? Actually I was wrong, there are some pencils that really do help a bit with handwriting - this is one of them. The little grooves all along the length are spaced exactly right so that a nice firm grip can be achieved by a right handed person and encourages proper finger position. All the right handers in the family said it felt nice to hold and the leftie unsurprisingly said it felt terrible and awkward so these get a big thumbs up from us here. Also come in the left handed version too which we haven't tried but I'd assume work just as well for those that use the other paw.

These easy start pencils are for right handed users. Two in a pack they are the prettiest pencils I have seen. In a baby pink with little grooves cut out of the side which whilst look attractive are there to ensure a good grip when using the pencil. These pencils are great for small children when learning to write or when practising their writing as they are tough and resistant to snapping when pressing hard on the paper. With space to write your name on the pencil, these will make a useful addition to children's pencil cases. A lovely stocking filler at Christmas or just a little inexpensive gift. A great price for what you get. Stabilo make great pencils. Absolultely recommend.

Good quality product. A lot different than usual pencils. Very good quality. Strong and dark led. You can't use regular sharpener. You need a bigger one or you can use blade. This is the only product I found after searching a lot. Very very useful for toddlers and preschoolers who are starting to learn writing. Usual thin pencils are difficult for them to hold. Thicker ones are easy to hold and write. Actually they need bigger ones than this. But I couldn't find any. So I bought this. One star less because of the high price. Can't buy it regularly. Really liked the product. Good packing and great service from Amazon. Thank you all. Hope my review helps other moms and dads.

I think these pencils are designed for learners. The little dimples that are shaved out of the pencils are designed to help get the proper writing grip on them. They are also triangular aiding with the grip.In terms of design these pencils look nice. They are pink and have a nice girth to them. The wood is a nice colour so all those dimples look good. The tips of the pencils are red (no rubbers) and the bit below that has a space where the name of the pencil's owner can be written. There is also an R there next to a hand indicating these are for right-handed writing/drawing.My six-year-old daughter is using these. She keeps them in her pencil case and she likes them.
