In short: Fulfils all criteria to guarantee an excellent product experience.Looks: I have lost track of how many years I have had mine (best part of a decade now). They still look the business and are often asked about by my clients whilst I am using them. One was even stolen, so I suppose that makes them quite desirable.Construction: The retractable tip is just perfect. It has a slight springiness to it that not only cushions the writing/drawing experience, but also helps avoid lead breakages, although the modern hi-poly' refills are pretty good in their own right. Made principally of plastic and aluminium, it is light yet very robust. The combination of a knurled section and rubber grip is perfect - no readjustment or sweaty finger problems. There are no fancy gears that turn the lead around (as advertised by other products) neither have I ever thought to myself that I need one of those - one less unnecessary mechanism that can go wrong = minimalism = long-lasting = happy owner.Use: Always works well, very easy to carry around (very light). Solid enough construction to withstand severe punishment - mine has been submerged in water for ~3 days (flood while I was away) & dropped from a height of over 10m (~30ft) - accidentally dropped in the space between staircase - which obliterated the lead refills inside but the pen works just fine. If it was the cheaper plastics varieties of mechanical pencils then they would not have survived. I'm also sure that some of the more expensive varieties will not be able to boast this. Even if it did stop working, replacing them is not going to be too painful. As testament to how well these have worked, I now have 3 varieties of these that take different refill sizes, as well as a spare 0.5mm as my all-rounder when I have to jot down or explain anything on the go. The oldest one is pushing a decade in age and looks/works like new. [For the astute fans out there: yes, they did make minor changes in their construction over the years, but not to any detriment]Conclusion: I have never been let down, only pleasantly surprised. I would highly recommend this over any other product I have tried (including comparisons against other brands that are >4x more expensive). A fantastic product that offers excellent value and many years of great service. This product has never disappointed me and I'm certain that most will agree once they have had the pleasure of using it.

It's incredibly hard to find good mechanical pencils these days. The market seems to be dominated by cheap ones that break quickly and need immediate replacing or expensive ones that look pretty but aren't designed for convenient use. This one is different. It has a metallic covering which prevents it from being damaged and gives it the appearance of much more fancy pencils yet is as functional as cheaper ones. The main advantage of this pencil is that it will not tear a hole in your pocket like most others do. The point retracts into the bottom when you close it making the end blunt and dull. When extended the tip is locked in place by the clip, which here goes down lower when the button is depressed. This allows it to retract without suffering from the problem of other retractable pencils where they are easily pushed back leaving nothing to protect the lead from breaking. It's really the best of both worlds. The only problem with this is that when the tip is retracted the clip sticks out quite a lot which can over time cause it to get bent out of position. The rest of the pencil is fairly standard. The eraser is small and gets used up quickly so you probably want to use a separate eraser whenever possible. The grip is unusual in that it is mainly metal with only thin rubber bits sticking through to provide a grip. This is almost as good as a fully rubber grip and is quite a bit more durable. The body of the pencil is light and thin. It can take a significant amount of damage but it's really best not to push it. The only reason I replaced this pencil (with another of the same make) is because I lost it. It lasted almost two years without substantial damage, which is a rarity for my pencils.I don't know if all copies of this pencil are shipped from Japan but both of mine certainly have been. Delivery takes about 3-4 weeks but is cheap and affordable. If you need a new pencil immediately this probably isn't the product for you, but if you want a mechanical pencil that will last without breaking itself or your pockets then this is the one for you.

This is by far the best designed and manufactured mechanical pencil I've owned or used in over 35 years of using mechanical pencils. However, after having bought 2 initial 0.7mm pencils, one of them stopped pushing lead through the dispensing mechanism. I thought maybe it was my use or a defective unit. Since my high school daughter also loved it and is using my 2nd initial pencil, I purchased an additional 2 units. From the 2nd two units purchased, again, one of them has completely jammed up and am not able to press a lead through the mechanism. I tried clearing it by pushing a new lead through the mechanism. I can see a clear hole through the mechanism, so nothing jammed inside of it.But when I put a new lead in, pressing the top to dispense it through the mechanism, it doesn't push the lead through. I've tried the same lead in the other working unit and it works without issues. So, I'm thinking that the mechanism inside these units is either defective or of poor qualify. I've used both malfunctioning units no more than 2 weeks each. Very frustrated and disappointed customer, as these are built without plastic mechanical parts which is exactly what I have been waiting for.UPDATE: I managed to reverse engineer the pencil ( I took it completely apart) by unscrewing the end cap and then the tip. Be gentle as it’s a plastic cylinder underneath the metal and rubber outer grip. I was able to find that a dry small piece of lead had gotten jammed inside the dispensing mechanism, keeping the claws open enough to not grab a lead and push it through the nozzle, but yet closed enough to allow the mechanism to extract as if it’s operating normally. Once I cleared the lead jam, the pencil now works like new. Hope this helps others who’ve had similar “no-longer functioning” issues reported here. I didn’t do this for the first pencil, as I thought it was a solid pen. It is not. Take it apart and rebuild it, clear any jams and it should work like new.

Currently studying engineering at university so having a solid pencil is essential since I probably interact with it more than my phone during university (or at least I try to). Never thought I would get so emotionally invested in stationary that I would write a review but this here pencil is worth writing about. Having tried the kuru toga premium edition beforehand I can safely say that without a doubt the pentel is the better pencil.Build Quality:Pentel - Full metal construction, weighty enough to feel good quality, one of the most satisfying clicks.Kuru - Half metal construction, lighter weight, does not feel as solid in hand.Features:Pentel - Lead indicator, retractable nib, bigger rubber (also easier to find replacements for rubber), jelly inserts in grip feel blissfullKuru - Rotating nib to ensure an 'even' distribution of line width, removable pocket clip. Conclusion:The rotating nib on the kuru does not keep the lines even, if anything it makes it worse because it will automatically rotate to the flattest side of the lead leaving you with much thicker lines than you should be getting. Found myself having to break the lead off to get thinner lines again. Would go as far to say this feature is a complete gimmick.Features such as the retractable nib on the pentel on the other hand are not gimmicky at all, as it helps to protect the lead, and your pockets/legs/friends. In addition the heavily weighted spring resisting deploying the nib, accompanied by the sharp retraction of the nib on the opening of the clip, combine to create the most heaven-like clicks.Don't get me wrong the kuru toga premium is an excellent pencil and I believed it was one of the best despite my bashing in this review, however it pales in comparison to the well thought out, expertly engineered masterpiece that is the mighty Pentel Graphgear 1000.

Perfect pencil! I use it every day, taking notes for hours together and the grip on this pencil remains super comfy. I've used it everyday for nearly 2 years and it was still going strong until I misplaced it last week :( I got home form uni and placed an order for a new one that very day! Many, many reviews have already highlighted the positives of this pencil so I'm going to just share a few tips about fixing some of the things that people didn't like about it:1. GRIP- the rubber nubs tend to depress and get squished down if you grip the pencil too hard and you end up rubbing your skin raw on the metal, I fixed this by simply wrapping clear tape around the coloured plastic barrel, this fills up the gap between the rotating metal barrel and the inner plastic barrel, stopping the rubber nubs from flexing. This fix made a world of difference.2. TIP - some have complained that the tip wobbles noticeably, but this is inevitable in a retracting tip. However, if you're willing to trade the retracting tip for a super rigid one then it can be fixed, again, by wrapping a tiny little piece of tape around the base of the lead sleeve.3. JAMS - The pencil CANNOT hold more than 8 leads at a time, 1 in the sleeve and 7 in the barrel. Do NOT try to fit any more in there because the only way you can fix the jam is by poking, prodding, slowly and painfully, and pulverizing all the lead to fine powder to empty it out

This is a fine mechanical pencil and the best I’ve used. The nib retraction is very good, a press of the pocket clip and the nib fires back into the pen body. The knurled and rubberised grip is very comfortable and the pencil has a good balanced weight to it. The pen outer is all metal, but some of the internals are plastic.A colleague of mine has the rotring 800 which is nice and seems all metal, but the nib is more loose than I would like, while the nib in the pentel has minimal play.I bought a 0.3mm and 0.7mm of this pen in approx 2008, both are still working as new. I bought another 0.7mm in 2019 so that I had a spare, in this time the pen clip has changed from a spring to a hinge. The hinge works the same but requires a little more press force to retract the nib, but Increases it’s functionally as a pocket clip. Also in the time, the metal shaft that houses the spare leads has been swapped for plastic, I guess this is to reduce costs, while it doesn’t seem to have any adverse effect on function or performance it’s a little disappointing it see, but for £7 it isn’t surprising. If pentel offered an all metal graphgear that replaced the plastic internals with metal, it’s likely buy it.For £7 this is a fantastic mechanical pencil and is the benchmark.

When I want to ensure accuracy in my wood shop I have used retractable pencils for years. The ones I used until recently were the cheap ones with 0.5 mm lead. I have to use HB or B lead to ensure my marks are dark enough. However, the lead is soft and breaks easily, especially when marking open-grained wood like oak. One solution - use a pencil with 0.7mm or 0.9 mm. lead when marking on wood. Even the soft leads are far more break-resistant than the 0.5 leads when marking on anything other than paper. My shop pencils are subjected to considerable abuse. Drop them once on the tip and game over for the cheap mechanical pencils. The lead holding tube on these pencils retract. Drop them. No harm done.(Don't forget to retract them by simply pressing on top of the clip after use.) When you press the top cap, the lead is always exposed at just the right length. These pencils a a joy to use in my shop.I now have three of these Pentel Graph Gear 1000 mechanical pencils in my shop. I use the 0.5 for making my drawings and writing materials lists. I use the 0.7 on closed grain wood and my 0.9 when marking on oak. They are color-coded making them easily distinguishable. What versatility! If you are a wood worker, you want these pencils.

As far as I am concerned this is the best mechanical pencil you can get. I already own one with a 0.5 mm lead which has given sterling service so was delighted to find the 0.9mm at a good price. ( I am somewhat clumsy so anything I use a lot has to survive being dropped, getting dirty and lots of sack the juggler moments.) Like the other, this one is a pleasure to use. The pads on the grip make it comfortable to use for long periods, unlike some with metal grips that tend to make my fingers sore. The way the clip easily retracts the collar and lead means I preserve the leads and save time and money. The colour coding on the barrel makes it easy to recognise different sizes. It is perfectly balanced and the design and construction is of excellent quality.in my previous review I referred to this as the Rolls Royce of mechanical pencils and stand by this opinion. Anyone who constantly uses a mechanical pencil will find this a pleasure to use.

I bought this somewhat absent-mindedly, being a sucker for stationery, but have found that this is one highly impressive drafting pencil. The build quality is impressive, exceeding my expectations, and holds out the promise of a long and cherished life for this pencil. The weight in the hand and grip are both excellent, and the propelling action for the lead is positive. The covering cap extends a long way into the case of the pencil, making its loss improbable. I like the way that the protective lead sleeve covering retracts back into the body of the pencil when the clip is pressed, making the end of the pencil less likely to damage pocket linings. Functionality is matched with aesthetic appeal in this item, which makes it a winner in my eyes. This is a pencil that I enjoy using.

I was initially looking for a Mechanical pencil because I do a lot of engineering drawing and I was bored of using the dollarama BIC pencils; they were cheap and would break easily. This pencil changed my life! It IS a bit more expensive but is well worth the price. It has a nice weight to it and has a retractable tip which is super satisfying! The rubber grips make it more convenient to hold. This might seem weird, but I seem to be getting more use out of 1 lead in this, than my previous pencils. It is definitely long lasting and seems high quality. The eraser too is pretty nice and doesn't leave an smudges on paper. If the price is throwing you off, then I suggest you stick with your current pencil, unless you really need a good quality, one-time-purchase mechanical pencil.

The Pentel Graphgear is my favourite mechanical pencil for sketching on the go. The metal body gives it a nice weight in the hand and the grip section near the tip stops it slipping in the fingers. Best of all, pressing on the clip to open it (to clip it on your pocket or bag for example) retracts the lead holder into the body to protect it. Simply press the end button again and it pops out ready for use. In the end is a rubber with a decent length and these are replaceable. The body also has an indicator for the grade of graphite in use, simply rotate this to show HB, B etc. I now have two of these pencils, keeping one with HB and the other with 2B.Now I can travel light and not have to take pencil sharpener or protective case for traditional wooden pencils.

I often use a mechanical pencil for sketching an outline of a drawing but never use it to shade or fill in an area as the led is often too hard and scratchy and the pencil is too light that there is almost no control... But this pencil is the complete opposite. The led is smooth and seems very strong, the weight of the pencil is perfect for and the grip is lovely. You can tell when you use this pencil that you have payed for quality, and there are so many little things that make the pencil a little extra special like the way you can pull of the clicker end and it reveals a thin rubber, perfect to rub things out with precision... At first i thought i was mad to spend almost £9 on a pencil, but i am so glad i did!

I had been looking around for a replacement to my old one which I unfortunately broke whilst dismantling to see how it worked (Yes, as stupid as that sounds, its the truth). As an engineer I am constantly, scribbling notes and sketches so I have done and do use it on a daily basis, this pencil provided you keep it in one piece, is pretty durable and robust. The pencil itself is quite weighty compared to some of its counterparts but perfect for me, as the weight is centred well and allows for a great stability and control when in use.I would say if you are wanting to do finer work the 0.5mm may be more appropriate as the 0.7mm produces quite a wide line, especially if your writing is particularly small!

+ heavier at tip than top which is good for balance when writing+ slim design+ nice silver/blue colours+ when the clip is "activated", the tip retracts automatically to avoid mishaps on shirts or in document maps etc.+ simple push on top brings out tip and you are ready to write+ easy to refill with a built in eraser at topThe only thing I didn't think worked excessively well is the "Finely chiseled metallic grip is inlaid with soft latex-free pads to cushion fingertips". It might be less slippery than if it had been a metallic grip only, the pads didn't stop my fingers from slipping entirely. I will use it for notes and revision comments, but I'm not sure I would sit a 4 hour exam with it.

These are amazing mech pencils. They're expensive for a reason- they are utter quality!! I've used multiple mech pencils and theses were highly recommended by pro artists as the name to work up to. I eventually bought one and now have multiples. They're amazing. So comfortable, a good weight and have a couple of good extras- you can twist the handle bit to show your internal lead shade from 2H-2B, so you can have multiples of the same lead size but know exactly what is inside so they don't get mixed up. Also, you can click the handle/clip bit and the nib goes in to save it ever breaking in storage. I love these pencils and so glad I upgraded finally. Best product on the market.
