In short: Fulfils all criteria to guarantee an excellent product experience.Looks: I have lost track of how many years I have had mine (best part of a decade now). They still look the business and are often asked about by my clients whilst I am using them. One was even stolen, so I suppose that makes them quite desirable.Construction: The retractable tip is just perfect. It has a slight springiness to it that not only cushions the writing/drawing experience, but also helps avoid lead breakages, although the modern hi-poly' refills are pretty good in their own right. Made principally of plastic and aluminium, it is light yet very robust. The combination of a knurled section and rubber grip is perfect - no readjustment or sweaty finger problems. There are no fancy gears that turn the lead around (as advertised by other products) neither have I ever thought to myself that I need one of those - one less unnecessary mechanism that can go wrong = minimalism = long-lasting = happy owner.Use: Always works well, very easy to carry around (very light). Solid enough construction to withstand severe punishment - mine has been submerged in water for ~3 days (flood while I was away) & dropped from a height of over 10m (~30ft) - accidentally dropped in the space between staircase - which obliterated the lead refills inside but the pen works just fine. If it was the cheaper plastics varieties of mechanical pencils then they would not have survived. I'm also sure that some of the more expensive varieties will not be able to boast this. Even if it did stop working, replacing them is not going to be too painful. As testament to how well these have worked, I now have 3 varieties of these that take different refill sizes, as well as a spare 0.5mm as my all-rounder when I have to jot down or explain anything on the go. The oldest one is pushing a decade in age and looks/works like new. [For the astute fans out there: yes, they did make minor changes in their construction over the years, but not to any detriment]Conclusion: I have never been let down, only pleasantly surprised. I would highly recommend this over any other product I have tried (including comparisons against other brands that are >4x more expensive). A fantastic product that offers excellent value and many years of great service. This product has never disappointed me and I'm certain that most will agree once they have had the pleasure of using it.

(bought elsewhere when out of stock here)There is only one other thing wrong with this pen.The lead grade indicator reminder widget is completely, absolutely and totally useless. It relies on the tightness of the pen body to rotate the printed h hb b labels under a tiny tiny, shadowy cutout. This means, in practice, that the thing can only ever sit in one place without unscrewing... which it WILL do if not tight.Useless and unreadable anyway.Everything else about this thing is marvelous. Solid and comfortable. The lead doesn't slip and it therefore feels like a freshly sharpened "proper" pencil all the time, unlike some others I've used where the amount of backlash in the clutch gets annoying after a while and finally becomes a point of teeth-wearing spinctre-gripping obsession.A joy to use and a joy to play with. This is gadget engineering at its best. Beautifully machined with Swiss-watch quality. It actually makes me grin to use it. Long sessions of use remain comfortable and, of course, it doesn't roll off the desk all the timeSomething not mentioned in any of the sales pitch or catalogues; pressing the back if the nerd-pocket clip triggers a top-sheathing action. The business end flies up into the body, ready for the next press of the end button, when it repositions itself - without backlash sloppiness or wobble - ready for action once more. Much more fun for compulsives than playing with a ball-point pen mechanism. The price, of course, is something of a minus point, being around four times the price of an averagely adequate lead holder. That, though has not put me off buying a second of these. I've a handful of good lead holder pens which are perfectly ok - the oldest is in fact a Pentel which I bought new in '74, still working fine - but I like to enjoy my work, and the graphgear makes a bit of difference to the experience.AS a drawing tool I'd give it 5+, but I've rated it as **** because of the lousy lead memo feature. I don't begrudge the price other than for feeling that if a feature is included, I's prefer it to be usable. Sticky tape kinda spoils the aesthetic, but it's that or engraving.

I actually did quite a lot of research before buying this pencil. As an engineer I have used a lot of mechanical pencils over the years, all of which have been relatively cheap models purchased from local stationery shops. When I was looking for a new one I decided to see if there was anything out there a little nicer than what I was used to. Well, my eyes were opened! I guess I shouldn't have been surprised that there are a multitude of websites dedicated to mechanical pencils (or clutch pencils if you hail from the USA). The most helpful site I found was Dave's Mechanical Pencils. He is a kiwi who has reviews of hundreds of pencils. It is clearly a labour of love.On to this particular pencil.I was attracted by the good looking aluminium body, build quality and the neat mechanism by which the tip retracts when not in use. I have been stabbed a number of time by mechanical pencils, so it is great to be able to retract the sharp tip and know I am safe with the pencil in my trouser or shirt pocket.I have found the grip to be really good - it is a mix of knurled aluminium and rubber dimples. In use this provides a solid and comfortable grip. The mechanism for pushing the lead through works well and seems reliable. The rubber works as you'd expect and it is useful that you can buy additional rubbers for the end at a reasonable price through Amazon also.It isn't the cheapest pencil out there, but it is also far from the most expensive. Considering the style, quality and utility I'd say this is excellent value for money. If I ever lose mine I'll certainly be buying another one!

My excuse for buying this was to be greener. To replace the plastic 0.5 mm disposable mechanical pencils that I use every day with something more durable ,refillable and comfortable to use seemed a bit of a no-brainer. So when this turned up at a very good price I succumbed. I expected it to be as well designed and made as the other Pentel kit I rely on, but this exceeded my expectations. It is an absolute delight. Well balanced, comfortable to hold for long periods, beautifully engineered and with a clever design that allows the collar and lead to instantly retract out of harms way by pressing the pocket clip. It feels solid enough to withstand the knocks and falls my kit is always subjected to.The only protrusion -the clip- sits neatly out of the way in use, is sturdy and has a heavy hinge pin that has no play in it. Pentel leads are not only smooth, contain 92% of recycled materials, but are also far less prone to snapping than other brands I've tried so are definitely worth getting. The pencil also has a little window on the side that can be rotated to show the grade of lead within. The only downside is the lack of any instructions on the pack which makes it advisable to read some reviews to work out how to use it. (Also I suspect that lending it or leaving it lying around may result in its disappearance as it is so very, very covetable.)This really is the Rolls-Royce of draughting pencils and I recommend it.

The pencil looks absolutely fantastic it looks quite mechanical a very beautiful pencil but some more detailed informationPackagingWhen it first came the first thing that becomes clear is the packaging was what I was expecting it wasn't very well packed it was completely thin plastic and can imagine that some people would have got this package scratched and even damaged so if I was to right this review just on the packaging I would rate it **DesignThe pencil design is absolutely fantastic it looks really fantastic it has an extremely mechanical look and has a great grip and the grip it's self looks quite cool and when my son used it in school many people were asking him were he got from afterminutes of him getting it out people were even asking if they could swap one of there own mechanical pencils but he did not swap and often gets mistaking for a pen so if I was to do a review just on the design I would give it*****Lead indicatorThis is not a good feature as it dose not do any thing so if I was to rate a review just on the lead indicator I would rate it as *PerformanceThis would be an easy ***** as it has very neat and heavy making it easy to use and Wright sharply and very smooth and is great for my sons hand writing lessons spits out very little lead at a time which is good when your changing what your doing and the retractable idea was a good one.

This is, quite simply, the best tool I have ever had the pleasure in drawing with. Even if not entirely meant to be used for the attached sketch, I can, with hand on self-esteem bestowed and self praised heart, finally look at a result with glee and admit that the result is not half bad.....more than that. Of all the small fortunes spent on.pencils in the three or so years I have attempted to create anything worth while, this has finally proven that a little beauty such as this, has punched something new from.my hand and onto paper. Aspiring artists, and indeed those who shall forever surpass only my yearning to achieve such status, cannot fail.If you havent already got your hands on one then make sure you hurl every spare penny on this. The thing glides, as if taking you there, and right before your very eyes. I'm not in the habit of becoming this keen about myself but without the tool, me being this satisfied may never have happened.Thank you most kindly.Don't forget refills either!!The problem becomes clear that all that glitters isn't gold. Twelve months have passed and the pencil is no longer working. The only way forward is to buy a new one. Any lifetime guarantee which may be offered when buying the first one doesn't actually exist. I'm not buying a replacement. I'll make do without. Amazon won't play

I use my 0.9mm pencil with Pentel B hardness leads (it is supplied with a couple of HB leads) for me this makes it perfect for both writing and drawing - entries that may need to be changed in my diary are easily rubbed out. This mechanical pencil is comfortable to hold and the small metal tube that supports the lead can be retracted (along with the lead) by clicking the pocket clip flat. This means you can put the pen in a bag or pocket without fear of the sharp point damaging you or your possessions. The cap on the end conceals a small synthetic rubber eraser and, if this is removed, more leads can be put into the pencil for future use. I don't tend to use the eraser in the pencil, but carry a Pentel Clic Eraser for when I need to rub out anything I've written or drawn. I find a mechanical pencil is more convenient than traditional pencils as I don't have to carry a sharpener about with me. I own several of these (with different thickness and hardness leads) and have used them for quite a few years without any failures. A stylish and functional mechanical pencil that is a good investment.

Had a 0.5mm model for just over a year now. Very please with it in use. I use mine for woodworking - I find it far better for making accurate, fine marks than wooden pencils of any variety.I do have ongoing problems with refilling/reloading it though. As per the Q&A, you take the cap off and rubber out an pop more leads into the chamber. They should then feed through "automatically". However, I do not find that this happens. No amount of gentle shaking to get the next lead to drop through into the nib succeeds.I've ended up having to feed leads back in the 'wrong way' to get the next one in place. I don't know if there's a fault with my mechanism - I've trashed quite a few leads trying to get a reload.and the nib does seem to block quite easily with broken lead as a result. (5 amp fuse wire makes a good poker to get the old leads and broken pipeces out.) Once it is loaded though, it's great again. I would buy again despite the issues I'm having reloading it.

These pencils are amazing and worth every penny. You twist the bottom to chose between 2H-2B so you can have multiple same pencils, with different leads, and know exactly what is inside. You click the clip at the top and the nib goes in so makes it safer for storage, another little positive touch. The make and feel of these screams quality. They're a good weight and the grip is perfectly comfortable. They are not cheap but you pay for what you get. They're the best mech pencils I've ever used and I can't see me ever using any others. These were highly recommended by many pro artists and I'm glad I paid good money for them, they're worth it.I have a few now and will buy more when I can justify spending the money on more.

This is a real thing of beauty both in looks and in action. I have had many mechanical pencils over the years, but this is by far and away the nicest one I have ever had and used. I prefer mechanical pencils, so that I can always ensure a neat, sharp point to my pencil, which writes so well. The weight of the pencil belies its quality - it feels really good in your hand and makes it easier to write with than lighter, plasticky ones.It is fascinating to watch the pencil lead retract back into the pencil, when you press the clip on the side. It's quite startling the first time you click it, but it is really satisfying and it prevents the delicate tip being broken in your bag or pocket.

Great - really pleased with it. Nice and solid to hold, and a good weight. Lead propel action is very firm and precise and, best of all, I've not once broken the end of the lead yet! Also particularly like the way the whole of the writing end of the pencil jumps back into the main body when you activate the clip and put it in your pocket - no more torn pocket linings for me. I've had lots of different 0.5mm propelling pencils over the years, the last one being a Parker - very neat and elegant, but too slim and no finger grips so my fingers were often slipping down the barrel. And that one did leave holes in my jacket pocket linings...Highly recommended!

What a wonderfully practical design. The retraction mechanism for lead delivery is very effective as it leaves the point hidden inside and the whole thing sits well in the hand, having a comforting weight, rubber nodes to assist with grip and a sprung clip which lodges it safely in the pocket of even winter jackets. Its simple, modern lines give it a striking appearance, which was its downfall for me: one of my students nicked it. The only slight tarnish was the metallic smell that the alloy sometimes left on the hand. If you have anyone in your life with a soft spot for design aesthetics, one - or even a set - of these would be a memorable gift.

I purchased the 0.3 pencil mainly for sketching. The pencil is well constructed, strong, practical, good grip and it fits fine in your hand when in use. I wouldn't say that it would be the best for writing as the lead is so fine, I would say that 0.5 and upwards would be best for that task. Having used Pentel standard plastic mechanical pencils for years I thought I would treat myself to something more stylish and long lasting and all I required was built into the GraphGear 1000. Well worth the money and when I purchased it, it had a fair discount on the RRP.Now looking at a GraphGear fine point pen as I am impressed with the pencil.

I first saw this pencil being used by my first year engineering supervisor, and it was a thing of beauty. Having used a mechanical pencil for the last 4 years, I can safely say that when I received this as a Christmas present it was one of the best presents ever! The pencil has a good weight to it without feeling heavy and can accommodate a variety of writing styles. The retractable nib prevents accidental self stabbings (a frequent event with mechanical pencils) and the overall build is sturdy. I would highly recommend it for the budding engineer, though it makes a great present for a range of people from architects to zoologists.

It is a very nice pencil for producing drawings. I do not do art drawings (no skill at all) I do drawings for small items I want to make. The quality is very nice. One potential fault: the tip tube retracts to protect it from damage when not in use by the clip. The designer probably thought this means if anyone puts it in their pocket the tip will automatically retract, but by that time the tip is deep in the pocket and it might catch the material and be damaged. I do not put my pencils in my pocket like that so it has not been an issue for me. At least it does have a mechanism to protect the tip which many cheaper pencils do not.
