We’ve got one leftie and one rightie in our house, and while the leftie’s a little too young to really tell, we have (so far at least) never discerned any major problem with comfortable writing and drawing pencils and pens. Maybe we’ve just been lucky but symmetrical ones have been working fine for our kids. That said, if a leftie is getting discouraged about drawing or writing because they don’t feel comfortable, then at an impressionable age when a little encouragement could go a long way, I can definitely see the point of investing in one of these even if the difference it makes is very subtle. It’s chunky and has a childish feel to it. We got a ‘pink/purple’ one and it’s relatively subdued in colour,to the extent that a boy might not (or shouldn’t) look at it and think “that’s a girly pen”- it’s fairly neutral-ish. Although it’s broad nibbed, if you keep it sharpened then it draws a fine yet bold pencil line that’s really quite satisfying. It does feel odd having a sharpener for something that doesn’t really feel like a pencil, it feels more like a kid’s pen, and it’s a shame that this sharpener is only for this pencil and vice versa as it means one extra thing you need to carry or keep track of.It’s very well suited to the hand size of a six-year-old and gets picked up very naturally, but a grown-up can use it without blinking too. The finger indentations are only very subtly shaped to the benefit of the left hand, and we gave it to our right-handed daughter to have a go with and she had no problems with it at all, so it’s certainly not a “left hand only” pencil.I do have my reservations about whether this is a slight case of overkill for a mechanical pencil that is only very slightly favoured towards left-handed people, and the cost and hassle of getting the specific HB refills seems like a long-term investment, but nevertheless this is a well-made pencil that could well provide some important encouragement for getting your left-handed child writing comfortably and confidently.

Having grown up as a left hander with the usual poor handwriting I was keen to try this pencil. It is supplied in cardboard and perspex packaging which is quite tricky to open and includes three white name stickers that are in the cardboard behind the pen. No refill leads are provided and these are available from Amazon separately at approximately £3.50 for six.It is well made with a combination of smooth and rubberised plastic and is supplied with a separate sharpener. This is the main flaw as I can see this easily getting lost and I do not think it would be too difficult to design one that clipped on the top. Maybe it is a ruse to sell the STABILO EASYsharpner or perhaps I am being too cynical. The leads are easy to replace, you unscrew the pencil and drop the new lead down the tube that is revealed. So far then it is expensive, has a sharpener that is easily lost and is supplied without refills but there are some up sides. Growing up I have seen left handers hold pens and pencils in all sorts of different ways. This pencil encourages the correct posture, with the ideal tripod grip. You can get grips for pencils that also helps but these tend to be too thick. In use, the pencil is light and comfortable with the shaping encouraging the correct grip. The thick lead is much less prone to breaking and stays sharp longer than normal lasting a long time. This is an expensive solution but one worth considering. Neat hand writing is a skill for life and one I do not believe there is enough emphasis on. Some children may not need it but if you are concerned with your child's writing or the way they hold a pencil this may help correct it.

This chunky style mechanical pencil is part of STABILO's handedness range designed to best support proper grip whatever your hand dominance. Research has shown proper grip is necessary for the best cognitive and skeletal development but many adults (including my husband) had a horrible embarrassing experiences in school with techniques to improve grip ranging from at worst public humiliation by the teacher to at best those triangles that screamed 'I can't hold my pencil properly' via rubber bands on the hands. STABILO's range looks to support best grip without making it a stigma. This lefty mechanical pencil is best for those who struggle with the shaved grooves on regular pencils but feel comfortable with the moulded pen grip. This pencil has a handle exactly like the pens and uses the mechanical pencil method to add more lead as required. The chunky lead means it can withstand the heavier pressure often associated with poor grip but this requires sharpening so a lefty sharpener is included making it easier to use.My dad is a left and thought it brilliant, my young daughter is ambidextrous but struggles with grip as she is very small for her age so everything is complicated to hold this is easier to hold in her left and right (I can attest I can use this with either comfortably) and is hard to hold in anything other than a tripod grip which is great!I love this range and will collect other pieces to help support grip and handedness for all the family!

STABILO EASYergo Mechanical Pencil for Right Handed with Sharpener, 3.15 mm - Orange/RedThis mechanical pencil is aimed at learner writers, with its broad barrel, finger guides and fat lead that resists snapping. However, for learner writers, you may as well give your kids pencils.=== THINGS I LIKE ABOUT THIS PRODUCT ===* Nice fat lead - 3.15mm - which makes it easier for learner writers to produce a nice line without snapping off the thinner leads that come with regular mechanical pencils (my mechanical pencil takes leads that are 0.5 and 0.7mm thick)* Plastic barrel which has 3 dimples in the writing area to guide where learning writers should hold the pen by providing instant feedback* Comes with a special tiny sharpener to sharpen the fat lead - the HB lead blunts easily, especially if the learner writer presses heavily (as many do when starting out with writing) and needs regular sharpening* Bright colouring, and the pen comes in a variety of different colourways to appeal to learner writers* Designed for right-handed learner writers=== NIGGLES ===* The packaging is tricky to get into, involving ripping open the cardboard* It's easy to miss the 3 little white name stickers that are stuck in the cardboard behind the pen* There is no spare lead provided* I couldn't work out how to use the sharpener* Seems an expensive alternative to an ordinary pencil, with the pencil and a pack of 6 replacement leads (

I don't know why this is called a left handed pencil because it is very comfortable to write with the right and left hands. The shape is almost triangular with a flat part on the back which rests comfortably on your finger when writing. even though it is a pencil it flows very easily and is a nice thickness, it rubs out easily and I love the sharpener although it feels a bit weird sharpening what looks like an ink pen. The top of the pencil screws off to reveal a tube containing the 'lead' (This one is 3.15 looks thick but doesn't write too thick ) You can sharpen it to a finer point. You press the tip of the pen to push the 'lead' further out. Amazon sell twin pack refills containing 12 leads for around £4.36 (At the time of writing)So refilling the pencil is better than buying 'normal' pencils that break when you try to sharpen them.I really like this pencil for its writing and comfort and the ease of sharpening. My granddaughter loves the pink colour and its easy to find in a cluttered handbag so I will be purchasing the refills and make this my 'go to' pencil from now on.

This STABILO EASYergo mechanical pencil, by the well-known German stationery brand Schwan-STABILO, is designed to be ergonomic for right-handers and is great for use by school kids just starting out, but many adults may enjoy the fun of using it too. The pencil is ergonomic to hold and features a soft moulded trio grip zone for comfort and ease of use making it very easy to learn how to hold it correctly. This model is available in four colourful options and although it is a mechanical pencil, a sharpener is supplied with it as it has a very thick 3.15mm HB lead and this helps to shape the point. Kids get good results when using these EASYergo pencils and at a little over six pounds currently from Amazon they are decent value for the quality and fun, although conventional pencils are obviously much cheaper. There are also STABILO EASYergo pencils designed especially for the left-handed so make sure you get the one that is most suitable for the recipient if giving as a gift.

The comfort or writing with this pencil is great and I'm sure it has helped my nephew with his writing exercises in the sense that he can hold it comfortably for longer and it also fits his hand well and doesn't slip. It doesn't break as easily as a "normal" pencil and it looks quite cool too with his own name on the tag.The only thing we don't think is fully thought-through is the sharpener. It comes with one, but it is not possible to attach it to the pencil or keep them together in any way when they are not in use which is a problem as it's a specific size and you can only use this sharpener size for the pencil. My nephew is not always great at keeping track of bits and pieces and I do wonder how long it will take before we need to buy a new sharpener or find an alternative way to make the pencil work again if the lead breaks.A very good product that might just need one added storage feature or pouch to keep the products together.

I got this for my nearly-8-year-old, left-handed son and so far he loves it - despite it being 'pink'. As a left-hander, he enjoys getting his own special things, in this case the grip is moulded to accept the fingers of the left hand and there is a lead sharpener that has the bladed mounted for left-handers.The pencil is quite large, for a child, and fits comfortably in his hand. He has used it, so far, for drawing and lettering his own comics. It is truly a mechanical pencil, in that it propels the lead forward, rather than being a simple clutch. No spare leads are included but are readily available. The sharpener gets the lead to a very sharp point, so might not be suitable for the very young. As mentioned before, the lead turns in the opposite direction to sharpen - something that will confuse righties. The build quality is good and it feels like a quality pencil.

This pencil is well designed and ideal for, small children who have either a weak grip or difficulties with writing. The grip is superb and makes it easier to perform writing tasks. This particular one is for right handed children but I beloeVe they are available in a left handed version too.The little, one who used this has a very weak grip and her writing immediately looked less disjointed and it can be wound up or down to release the lead. After a little while the lead became quite dull so we sharpened with the sharpener included and that restored the pencil to normal. This is the correct sharpener for the pencil and I do not think any normal sharpener would work with this.At first I thoughtthis pencil was very expensive but after using and trial long with my friend's little four year old I would now say this is,worth every penny and no hesitation in recommending.

The humble pencil has remained unchanged from the beginning of time to the modern day. A piece of wood with lead (or graphite) in the middle. But now the bods at Stabilo, a company that specialises in pens and pencils, have innovated and produced a new pencil. A pencil which aids those learning to write. This is it.My 6-year-old has been using it. She enjoyed putting on the name sticker to start with so that the pen is personalised as hers. And now she has been using it to try and get her grip right by putting her thumb, pointing finger and middle finger into the dimples on the red bit of this pencil. She still needs to develop her grip to match the conventional one but I am not too worried because in the future she'll be using keyboards and the like for writing more than pencils and pens (unless of course she gets into art). Anyhow this may help her anyway.

It's a bit dressed up - but essentially this is a propelling pencil for kids who are learning to write.. However, for all that it's targeted at kids, I have found it useful for scribbling diagrams for my electronics work, it feels good and writes a nice bold line albeit the pencil itself is fairly short.Comes in one of those annoying blister packs, but a clever one. Press hard on the protruding bubbles on the back and you can easily tear away the plastic part to get to the product - no need of scissors, as is too often the case with such packaging. Inside you'll find the pencil itself, a little sharpener to make sure you maintain a good point and even some tiny stickers to go on each item in case you need to label the items when taking them to school or office.Nicely thought out product that may find uses over and above its target audience.

This pen and pencil set is essential if you would like your child to hold a pen or a pencil in a couth, civilised manner. It is very comfortable to hold and the fingers and thumbs gently and easily assume the right position to hold a pen or pencil - or a paintbrush, for that matter. Having achieved this, children will find how more flexible it is to write, draw and paint. The writing hand adopts a position that most had some thirty years ago before teachers and parents did not bother to help children to hold pencils, crayons and pens. Hence it looks as if people holding their pens in somewhat ugly, cramped hands will forever blight our civilsation.Schools should insist that pupils come equipped with this pen despite the cockeyed way they themselves probably write.

This is a neat-looking mechanical pencil, complete with sharpener, but a little over-designed for its own good. It's basically a classic propelling pencil but with a chunky lead, an innovation that makes it a much more practical proposition for children to use. The lead being much thicker than usual, it uses a normal-looking pencil sharpener rather than the little one that usually doubles as the push-button of tghe propelling mechanism. This one is part of Stabilo's left-handed and right-randed ranges, all of which are shaped to suit the handedness of ther user. That shaping makes these pens and pencils morte comfortable to use all day, and as such they are great for students. No complaints at all about this one from Stabilo.

I bought this pencil for my 5 year old who was struggling with pencil grip, and her teacher had commented that it was soon going to hold her back because the way she was holding her pen was going to start hurting her when she was writing for longer durations. When my daughter picked this pencil up, she found the grooves easy to fit her fingers to and adapt to writing in this new way. I noticed soon after she started using it that it was helping her grip on other pens and pencils too - I am thrilled! The lead in the pencil is chunky and hard to break, she doesn't fiddle with the retractable aspect of it either.

The Stabilo Easy Start range is ideal to help improve pencil grip and handwriting. This mechanical pencil is designed to allow children to hold it correctly. This is a left handed design, but there are also right handed pencils available, as well as various colours. This is a nice bright purple/pink colour. You press the tip to push the nib down. However, as the nib is fairly thick, a pencil sharpener is also included to help keep it sharp and make writing neater. A good design and fun colour.
