I've just taken up drawing as a hobby (so not a expert or anything!) and having done some internet research wanted to treat myself to some nice new pencils. I want to try hyperrealism, or at least make my drawings look as realistic as possible, so got the 12 set of Faber Castell 9000 - and these so that I can have some really black pencils, and a wider range of values to choose from just as im starting out to see what works for me. First up - the pencils which came in the tin are HB, 2B,4B,6B,7B and 8B,different to the description, but Im happy about that as I didnt want 2 2Bs/4Bs. Ive attached a photo of them tried out against the FC 9000's - you can definitely see a difference. So Im glad I bought these because now I have a much wider range of values to work with as Im just getting into my new hobby. I saw a youtube artist video recommending use of a Faber Castell polychromos black pencil alongside her FC9000's to use for the bits she wanted to be really black. I have a set of FC Classic coloured pencils so tried this out next to them for comparison - its a good idea to use if you only have normal graphite pencils, but I found it to only be about as black (in my untrained eye) as the 6B in this Staedtler Black set, and even that isnt as 'black' as these new pencils, it seems a bit of a warmer black, if that makes sense? So on a positive note, these pencils - all 6-do have blacker values compared to the FC9000's and are worth buying for that reason. On a negative - its only really the 4-8B's that are really what I would have bought if I was buying them individually, because to me, testing them on my cheap paper, the HB, 2B and 4B dont seem much blacker/matter than the FC9000 6,7 & 8Bs (they still contain some graphite I think) - thats why I didnt give 5 stars for value for money, because you can probly buy the 6,7&8B black pencils - the ones that really stand out as being something different to what you get in a normal graphite pencil set - for less than the price of a full box of these. Still glad I bought them though, to experiment with - its always good to have a bigger range of things to work with and try out when youre learning something new. And glad theres no duplicates in the tin like it says on the description.

The Staedtler Mars Lumograph Soft Degrees (8B-2H) is definitely, without a doubt, one of the best graphite pencil sets I have ever used (and will continue using) due to numerous factors.Upon receiving it, the pencils come inside a metal tin, with a small leaflet that explains the rest of the Mars Lumograph range, as well. as accessories. The appearance of the pencils itself have a hexagonal barrel shape, with a smooth blue paint job, and the brand/sub-brand displayed, along with the grade of each pencil being displayed in all sides of the pencil (the ferrule?).Whilst I don't have anything above a 2H, I can confidently say that pencils from HB to 2H (especially the softer leads) are INCREDIBLY smooth, and easy to perform many layers. In addition, it is relatively easy to blend, whilst also maintaining those hard outlines to a degree. The softer grades, particularly 6B+ are incredibly smooth, glides on paper with ease, and can give out pleasantly dark tones. As for their durability in terms of the graphite shattering inside the barrel, it has not happened to me as of yet, though regardless I would still remain careful when handling anything above a 4B grade pencil. Its erasability is just as expected, coming off with ease, though of course anything that is exceptionally dark will not be removed entirely, and this applies to all dark graphite pencils. For its price, the performance of these pencils are on a different level compared to some of its competitors. Definitely a worthy investment.

This review is specifically about Mars Lumograph Black (carbon lead; dark gray casing) and not about the standard Mars Lumograph (graphite lead; blue casing). I will mainly compare them to Conte a Paris “Pierre Noire” which are my favourite brand of pencils. My biggest beef with Pierre Noir is that they’re very dry and powdery, and the lead is very fragile. They’re impossible to sharpen with a regular sharpener, so I usually just use a sharp knife to expose the lead and then sharpen them on a sanding block. These pencils are also very messy, spreading fine black dust everywhere, almost like charcoal. In Mars Lumograph Black, the lead is much more robust, they can be sharpened beautifully with a regular sharpener. The wooden casing is not as well made as Pierre Noire, and one of my pencils is slightly decentered, but I think this is not a huge issue. However, with Pierre Noire you can really get those rich velvety blacks that are so crucial for creating great contrast. Mars Lumograph Black look dark gray in comparison, and they have a bit of that dreaded metallic shine that I absolutely hate about the “regular” graphite pencils. Pierre Noire 2B are much darker than Mars Lumograph Black 4B, and Pierre Noire 3B are darker than Mars Lumograph Black 8B.In short, I can see myself using Mars Lumograph Black in the field where their robustness would be very welcome, but I think Pierre Noire are much better for use in the studio.

Staedtler Mars Lumograph pencils. I am so glad I purchased these. I used to sketch in pencil, but then started sketching in pen for many years. I recently wanted to go back to pencil sketching, but, couldn't decide what pencils to purchase...I definitely made the right choice here. These pencils are perfection. For anyone who has ever used a 'cheap' pencil, you will notice immediately the difference. These pencils are smooth, and they glide onto the paper with such ease, like a knife through butter...wonderful. There are no 'gritty' bits in the lead. The pencils are not round in shape, they are hexaganel, which personally, I find fit easier in the hand, and do not slip from your fingers. They also sharpen without breaking (use a Staedtler sharpener). In this tin set you get 6B 5B 4B 3B 2B B HB F H 2H 3H and 4H, and I found that more than adequate for me, and for most people, that really would be all you need. The pencils sit perfectly inside a plastic compartment (individual slots), inside the tin, and so they do not move around and get damaged. As I have been sketching for many, many, years, I would say that Staedtler and Derwent are now my only choice. Buy the Staedtler Mars Lumograph pencils with confidence.

Just got them and surprisingly LOVE them and the 8B is the darkest of any brand if you are looking for a really dark black. I actually bought a dozen "Conte Extra Fine Drawing Pencil" in 2B (French) because they are so black, but you cannot use them until the very end of your drawing as they are waxy and do not lift well, so it is not a good idea to use them for layering until the very end when you are adding the finishing touches to your piece. Also, you need a very light tough otherwise the lead breaks off and can create quite a mess. And to tell you the truth, I did not think that I would like these, have no idea why, but bought them as I was told that the 8B was really dark black, which is a hard value to achieve. So, I would say that statement is correct, and this brand has the darkest 8B of any brand and I have used Prismacolor, Derwent, Faber-Castell 9000, Cretacolor. My favourite being Derwent, as it also has water soluble and coloured graphite which is fabulous. Actually I am not that impresses with Faber-Castell 9000 as they are scratchy and I think damage the paper, and off course make it harder to lift without leaving impressions.Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner!

I bought my tin of pencils from a well-known high street store. I specialise in producing detailed drawings to order and use these for portrait and landscape work, as well as general drawing and sketching. They are all easy to blend and sharpen so that you can get the benefit of a sharp point for fine detail without the lead breaking. The b pencils give a good depth of colour and coverage so that areas of very dark tone can be achieved quickly, with subtle nuances of shade within, while the harder pencils lend themselves well to textural drawing, cross-hatching and soft shadows. They also erase easily, and unlike many rivals, come in a decent tin in which they stay put.Depending on the subject of the drawing/sketch,you may need to supplement the range occasionally (e.g. I found I needed a 3H and 4H for some of the paler skin tones in portrait work, as this set goes up to a 2H only) but for landscape work, I found the range sufficient. As a starter or base set, they are great, and would make an ideal gift for an experienced or budding artist.

These are excellent premium quality pencils by Staedtler for sketching. There are 12 x 8mm pencils in total ranging from 2H to 8B. The degrees of softness are: 2H, H, F, HB, B, 2B, 3B, 4B, 5B, 6B, 7B, 8B. They are presented in a nice metal tin which provides good protection and easy access. The highly distinctive blue, silver and black top livery is iconic and it hasn't changed in years.I have used these pencils before and they have never let me down. This set is excellent for building up tone in portrait or landscape sketches for example. They sharpen well without splintering, and are comfortable to hold and use. The graphite is super smooth on paper and does not scratch at all like cheaper pencils. The graphite also erases easily so you can perfect your work. There is something very nice and satisfying about a good quality pencil like this one. This is a great set for any artist or student alike. Recommended.

What a fine tin these pre-sharpened pencils come in. All lined up ready for action. graded left to right, 8B to 2H. Sadly my efforts at drawing with them can be graded 00. That's not to fault the pencils, which do exactly what it says on the neat graphically pleasing tin, it's really that my expectations of suddenly being able to draw, having purchased these fine Staedtler products, have been dashed. My aspirations have taken a tumble, the gap between my perception of my latent talent and the cold, brutal reality of my limited skill became only too clear when I applied lead to paper. I cannot fault these excellent pencils, I can only suggest that the tin should carry a warning, i.e."these pencils do not guarantee you'll produce anything of worth". However I do find them useful for doing the Glasgow Herald crossword.

these were recommended by a friend and I could not decide which size package to buy. I like that this has six pencils and frankly probably a good enough assortment of pencils. I like the little tin case to keep my pencils in and think it is a perfect size. I will probably replace my favorites one by one and continue to use the case. It is sturdy metal and has a hinged cover that snaps on tightly. The six pencils chosen include from soft to hard lead for details and shading.I would recommend this set to anyone serious about drawing. The only thing I might like better is if they were round instead of six sided. The six sided is nice because your pencils will not roll off the table but I find that round pencils are easier to sharpen without breaking.Be careful when sharpening!

Great quality pencils, with its own set of pros and cons. Use this if you want to make clear consistent lines that you are confident of.Since it is mixed with carbon instead of being pure graphite it not have that shine that appears with regular graphite pencils when you shine light directly on it. But also because of the carbon this makes the pencil slightly harder to erase with than regular graphite pencils. Using eraser on the darker pencils can actually smudge instead of completely erasing so be careful.I recommend using lighter quality pencils like 2H or 4H for initial sketching before using 2B, 4B, 6B, or 8B for drawing and rendering the picture. Useful addition for any artist.

Staedtler makes very good product. I was looking for a pencil with very dark lead for hair and other dark shadows in my drawing. Its more like crayon texture than a typical graphite pencil. I rather use polychromos black or Prismacolor black if I needed the same. Some folks might like it. Nevertheless it can be useful in your drawing arsenal.Edit: Finally seeing the results of this pencil its very nice and very black than a normal graphite pencil. I actually love it and I wouldn't have said it?. Only problem is that it lead breaks quite easily if over sharpen. Make sure you use decent sharpner.

Some of the best pencils I have ever used. Much better then Derwents in my opinion. The graphite smooths much easier for blending, and the softer leads (7b & 8b) leave a really dark/almost black) looking mark. They also sharpen very well and hold alot sharper of a point then the Derwents do. Even the 8b holds a sharp point and does not break off the second you apply a little pressure. I wish my local stores sold these individually so I wouldn't have to order a pack of them each time, but its worth buying the whole kit. I already ordered 3 kits just to have them ready.

I like to use these high charcoal content graphite pencils as they give darker tones when sketching, and are less inclined to produce the graphite shine when you try to over darken and area. So these pencils are great, and as described 8B, 7B, 6B, 4B, 2B and HB. BUT they come in a tin that indicates 8B, 6B, 2x4B, 2x2B with an additional cardboard sleeve indicating what is really contained. Have to say that is fine by me, but if it was a present it might be odd, and could be confusing later once the cardboard sleeve has been removed. Hence 4 stars not 5 stars

Wow! These pencils are the BOMB. The jet black lead leaves a solid intense color on the page. My shadows are deep, and my lines are opaque. The pencils leave a matte finish, which is ideal for my kind of drawing. I plan on scanning my drawings, and having a matte finish won’t make the pencil line shimmer under scanner light. I also love that the lead is THICK! God knows how much I hate when pencil leads break while sharpening; and I’m sweet on all my pencils! If you need any kind of extra black and extra soft pencils, definitely give these a try!

Love these drawing pencils! I bought a different set from the store, horrible, waste of money. These Staedtler drawing pencils blend beautifully, sharpen to a fine point, and have a wonderful range of tones. I had another set from years ago that I lost, and have always been extremely satisfied. I bought a small two hole hand sharpener of the same brand, and it works much better than the crank handle sharpener I've been using for the past 60 years. I highly recommend these drawing pencils, and I will purchase again as needed. Love the tin, too.
