I bought this camera as a result of weeks of comparing camera reviews online and a quick demonstration from the very helpful salesman in the shop where I bought it. After using it for a while it was easy to handle and had a good range of features. When using it to shoot a fashion show it showed its weakness as it takes a while to process each image after it is taken which resulted in a frustrating lag/lock up of the screen before you can take another shot. This was disappointing as it meant that I lost quite a few action shots which I would have caught using my DSLR. The Images were of good quality with plenty of colour if a little over processed.Under mixed lighting in low lit conditions using ISO3200 and no flash there were slight noticeable patches of colour on the photos. In Good lighting however the photos were very clear and sharp as expected. Shooting video was simple and easy with very good results using the intelligent auto setting. The stabiliser worked well and I was able to hand hold without camera shake. The sound was good with the built in microphone but I would have liked the option to add an external mic using a mini jack connection as I already own a microphone. Overall, it is a very good camera that does what it is to supposed to do with little fuss. Because I am a professional photographer and I bought this camera as an emergency backup I was a unsatisfied with the delay between taking each shot which is not good in a live action situation although you can use it in burst mode to capture a sequence of shots. Another disappointing aspect was the capacity of the battery. It is quickly exhausted and takes a long time to recharge and as a result. I have had to buy several spare batteries and a charger to make sure I don't run out of power. The DSC-HX400 is a wonderful all-round camera that produces some great photographs and video. It is easy to use and full of features for the beginner and advanced photographer alike. It also has a truly amazing Zoom lens and stabilising system. The camera can produce some very good photos in low lighting (but it takes a little practice). Once you get used to this camera it is a little gem and will be great for family holidays and casual photography. If you do a lot of sport, action, or live fashion shows you will be disappointed by the delay between shots but apart form that it is a great camera.

I bought this camera earlier this month (December 2019), to take with me on a vacation to South Africa. I wanted a camera that was not extremely expensive and not too heavy, but that would offer me reasonable capability to take on game drives (mini safaris), and visits to places like Table Mountain National Park and the Cape of Good Hope. This camera did not disappoint! The 50x optical zoom with optical steady shot stabilisation was amazing. I couldn't believe the quality of the photographs I managed to take from the back of the safari truck, without any tripod support. As an example of what could be achieved, I include a wide angle and zoomed shot of two elephants, taken from the back of a stationary safari vehicle but with only hand held stabilisation of the camera. The original images are 5184 x 3888 pixels, but due to file upload size restrictions I had to rescale these examples down to 2000 x 1500 pixels. I was particularly impressed when I managed to take respectable photograph of a bee approaching some flowers in a tree from about 8m distance. Again this image was taken with no mechanical stabilisation of the camera, just hand held from a seated position. As an example of a landscape shot where the camera is panned from left to right, I include a photo of the Cape Point to Cape of Good Hope landscape, again scaled down to fit file size restrictions. For its price, this camera makes an excellent choice for a tourist who wants above average performance, but doesn't care for all the hassle that goes along with carrying and using a fully fledged DSLR with multiple lenses. This bridge camera is great for an amateur wildlife photographer. In particular when travelling as a tourist in areas that are potentially high-crime, the relatively low cost of this device reduces the worry that would accompany carrying a professional camera that would cost three to four times as much money.

Recently decided to get into walking and wanted a camera that was going to be good enough to capture a range of scenarios and subjects from landscape and family and friends to Basketball action without having to carry a huge amount of equipment. This camera offers me everything I wanted and i really can’t see another need for a different camera at my level. I have become somewhat of a geek since buying it in order to understand the used of different features and with the camera being so easy to use I feel like I’m already a pro (far from it) I bought the camera thinking it would be a great starter camera and a stepping stone into an SLR but with all the functions it offers and the set allowsyou to build upon with the hot shoe and lense thread (which I’ve obly just discovered from a you tube video) you could comfortable take professional quality photos. The only thing I would have liked would have been some lower appiture settings as I love that feature and contrast in photos although I have taken good photos with the settings it has. The zoom is amazing and almost shocking the first time you realise it’s capabilities. It took me a while to figure out how to transfer the pics using WiFi but you tube saved the day. I should add however the entire use of this camera I e done blind (minus you tube vids) as I haven’t opened the instructions once and still found it easy to use and feel I am really making use of all the cameras photo settings. I’m sure I’ll use more however as I haven’t touched apps or anything yet. I would have liked the option to fasten the lense cover to the camera. There is already a little toggle of metal and the base of the camera that would be perfect to utilise but a very small price to pay for such a good alround camera. I would recommend this to anyone and for its price range I really think it’s the maximum you could get in a camera.

As a Wedding Photographer I find the silent mode very useful especially when filming the marriage ceremony where normal camera clicks are unwelcome. I would not use it for the rest of the wedding as the camera is not as quick a my SLR.As a wild life photographer I find the 50x zoom is great for stabilised images as my previously owned Canon 60x zoom did not stabilise. The image may not be all that clear at such distances but, to be fair, the lighting conditions in Winter time are not always good. I can't wait for Spring and Summer to really put the camera through it's paces.I don't always carry my SLR with it's different lenses (too cumbersome often) so I always keep the Sony handy in the car ready for instant use.Very handy! It's lightweight, sturdy and pleasant to carry, not at all cumbersome.I have missed several potentially great wildlife shots due to the long time it takes to process the picture (nearly 6 seconds in most modes) during which time you can't press the shutter again until the processing message disappears, along with the subject you were filming. My solution is now to use the multiple image mode which I stumbled upon by accident or use the Intelligent Auto mode.Focusing in any mode is not instantaneous and there is a risk if you press the shutter to focus too far it takes an out of focus picture.I particularly like the rapid response from using the viewing screen to looking through the viewfinder without the need to toggle. The camera modes are clearly displayed on the screen and in the viewfinder. Initially I found this camera frustrating to come to grips with. On reflection, probably no worse than any other make.Taking all things into consideration, for a Bridge Camera it functions well once you master its quirks; it is remarkably good value and happily,I am beginning to like this Sony HX400V camera.

I bought this camera as an upgrade to my compact digital camera and as a lighter alternative to my DSLR camera.I wanted a good picture quality and this camera produces a quite acceptable picture at 20.4MP. Image stabilisation is impressive, especially at 50x zoom on the Zeiss lens (24-1200mm equivalent on a 35mm camera). The in built flash does avery respectable job at all zoom settings. Noise in the picture is a trade off against sensor size. Video is good quality with Dolby stereo sound. The handling of SDXC memory cards (>32MB) is useful, particularly for extended video.Connectivity seems to be well implemented with USB, HDMI, WiFi and NFC all behaving properly with PC and mobile applications.GPS is accurate but does not contain direction information (no digital compass). GPS logging is also accurate, but has virtually no manual or website support. I wanted to extract my GPS logs and had to trawl the Internet to find details of the Sony file output (which is actually nmea sentences in a text file with a header). Sony, please address this issue. The camera weighs in at about 660g but feels a little vulnerable as most of the unit is plastic. It is not water resistant either, so use in inclement weather is not recommended. Battery life is average in my view and I have purchased a spare battery to manage this.Overall, a good buy. It will never succeed the DSLR in terms of picture quality, or the compact in terms of size. However, it produces good quality pictures and videos at an affordable price and is light for travel.

Bought this camera as it seemed the best value bridge camera with the features I wanted. It has a digital view finder so I can use it without my reading glasses, and get up close for macro shots of plants and flowers. But the screen is fine for quick snaps and landscapes. The automatic focusing picks up the subject of the photo quickly. The buttons are wellspaced and easy to use for clumsy fingers. Most of the pictures have turned out fine.My problem is with the sheer complication of modern cameras, and the miriad options make learning to use them hard work for the occasional user.I have still not learnt how to download them by wifi which would be a good option. The photo handling options are just too confusing for me to grasp yet. At least this camera has a reasonable instruction book as I hate paying hundreds of pounds and then having to download and print instructions myself. However during my first week of using the camera it froze one day and refused to take a picture, when we were at a prime garden site. Still no idea what the error symbol meant as it is not in the book. 2 days later without any obvious change it decided to work again. The local retailer I bought it from recommended it for its lens quality and are happy for me to take it in for a tutorial when I need it, so I feel confident I will get the hang of the technology in the end.

I am very satisfied with this product it delivers the results I was expecting. I wanted it to use instead of my DSLR in situations where the DSLR plus lens is too heavy to carry e.g. trekking or where it would be too risky to use. Picture quality is pretty good but not quite as clear as my DSLR. The pictures are not over-sharpened as with my previous bridge camera or over saturated. The panoramic feature is great and makes up for the lack of a truly wide angle lens. It can be used vertically or horizontally. The zoom and stabilization gives good results. My biggest criticism is the rapid fire and the on/off switch. The rapid fire works great, it is very fast, see the spec but then there is quite a long wait whilst it displays the pictures to you before you can take more shots. You may find this a draw back if you are interested in this feature, I do. The ON switch is just in the position where you put your finger on it as you put it away only to find the battery discharged next time you want to use it.The battery itself gives good life when used normally, again I would say it delivers broadly in accordance with the spec.I have given an overall rating of 4 stars good because I do not feel sufficiently qualified or to have experience of enough other bridge cameras at a similar price point to give it a higher rating.

I have enjoyed using this model since it was launched a few years ago and as I had taken thousands of incredible pictures around the world, I decided to trade my old one in and buy a new one. There was nothing to suspect that the camera would let me down and at the shop they thought I was crazy to trade mine in. For me it was so worth it to have a new one, as it didn’t owe me anything and I got a great trade in price for mine We are on our way to do an Expedition cruise through the Chilean Fiords and I wanted to make sure that I got the greatest shots. The camera is very easy to use, the quality of the images are outstanding. The zoom range is the best you will ever get in a bridge camera.I originally went in to buy a SLR camera but to get the range I would have had to buy a lens that was over 12 inches long. We do a lot of safaris in South Africa and need to point and click in an instant. I have the smaller compact Sony too which works just as well but the zoom is not as long. but is great for night photography and popping in a handbag. The camera is so lightweight, I did consider a Nikon, but their new model is a lot heavier and more bulky. I love this camera and all it’s features and would recommend it to anyone.

I have very little knowledge of photography and I wanted to step up from my old compact with a view to learning more about photography and being able to take good pictures in a range of situations including promotional shots for my gardening business. I researched many bridge cameras and SLRs and opted for the HX400V. Features that attracted me were the favourable reviews concerning the zoom lens, the electronic viewfinder with automatic eye detection, plus the camera being in the right price range for me. So far I have only experimented with the camera on auto setting and outdoors in good light - so a long way to go yet! However, I am already really impressed by the ease with which I can take clear images of subjects both close up and at distance.I was worried that the EVF might be fuzzy and not helpful - I needn't have worried, it's fine, and the automatic switch over between screen and EVF is one of the reasons I chose this model and not the HX350. So I am feeling happy and confident that this camera will serve me well and I am looking forward to learning more about it's features and therefore about photography in general..... in time this might justify the next step up to a DSLR.

The camera is fine for most of the purposes I use it for. In good light, pictures have fantastic definition. I recently had a shot blown up to 75 x 50, and was amazed at how many tiny details could be seen. In low light, the zoom sometimes struggles and sometimes when light is even only moderately poor, blues, browns and greys tend to merge into a rather dull mass. My son owns something much more expensive, though, and generally it gives it a good run for its money, even though there are moments when you clearly get what you pay. The quality of the video pictures is the best I have had on a bridge camera, but it came as a shock to discover that I could only play videos I had shot using it by downloading PlayMemories Online.I have a perfectly normal, fairly up to date windows computer, but it won't even recognise the existence of videos shot using the camera without the special Sony software. Users more expert than me may say "everything is fine", but I find it cumbersome to use and to be honest, if I want to take videos I tend to use my old, non-Sony camera, even though the quality is less good, because the resulting files are so much easier to use. A pity.

I'm a complete amateur photographer and asked a family member who is a professional photographer for advice on what type of camera to purchase. My aim was just to improve my photos for wildlife and taking some decent family pictures. My first though was a DSLR but she recommended a bridge camera as I really didn't want to carry lots of lenses and equipment around. I had originally seen a Nikon that was double the price then came across the Sony Cybershot DSC-HX400V online. I went into a couple of shops to see it for myself and get a feel for it then took the plunge. I was not disappointed! This fantastic camera has surpassed all my expectations! It is incredible for wildlife images, detailed shots, landscapes, portraits - and Ive not once used it out of auto yet! Im not so keen to learn more about the features to progress my knowledge and experience. A perfect buy for a beginner. It's not too big, has a bundle of features to explore and has a shoe fitting to offer progression for adding flashes etc. The Carl Ziess lens and zoom is out of this world! For example - Photos of the moon have incredible detail. I have already recommended this camera to friends and family!

Bought a couple of months ago to replace my Samsung compact. Was looking for something a little more sophisticate than a compact and wasn't sure whether to go for a bridge or get an SLR which I had back in the days before digital. In the end went for a bridge on the basis that I didn't want to end up carrying lenses around with me. Thus far I think I made the right choice. The picture quality is excellent even on high optical magnification. I am sure the zeiss lens helps in this respect. The software is easy to get around and if u forget what a function does there's a useful help button which provides an on-screen explanation. Macros are pin sharp and the clever feature that takes multi photos and 'adds'them together to increase light level is fantastic in low light scenarios where a flash isn't appropriate. Build quality is generally very good but the battery/sd card cover and the button u press to take a shot do feel a bit flimsy and cheap and this is the only reason I give it a 4 out of five. It's a small point I know but I would like to feel a more sturdy button when I take a picture. If it weren't for this I'd say it was near perfect for the price.

Picked this up on 31 March 2015, and have been merrily experimenting with all the features - particularly the extremely impressive zoom lens. Previously I've only ever used a Point & Shoot Compact, so this is a big step up and I intend to fully get to grips with my new toy when I go on holiday shortly, as I have not used all the features fully yet. Apart from the outstanding Zeiss lens, I really like the Electronic View Finder and the sensor that activates the EVF automatically when I bring my face up to it is awesome. Image Stabilisation likewise. The camera feels really good & well-balanced in the hand and is of sturdy construction. I also like the ease of viewing pictures through Wi-Fi on my new Sony W829 Smart TV so no more need for cables.Need a leash for the lens cap though - how much would that have cost, Sony?! And why no battery charger included? Also, the strap is a bit cheap and doesn't feel right. This cost-cutting is in stark contrast with the camera itself being such a quality product, and just smacks a little of meanness, as you ideally want something that really sets your new camera off to its fullest.

Bought two weeks ago, so not had long enough for any extensive use. Moving up from a DSC-HX1, the HX400V is a larger camera, but this is to accommodate the much larger zoom. So far I am very impressed with the quality of picture on zoom - hand held at 50 times, the way in which the camera has automatically compensated for back light, its comfort to hold and general usability. It took a little working out to set up NFC and WiFi, and link to Xperia Z1, but these are great facilities. It may not have quite the same feel of solidity as the HX1, but I am very happy with the build quality, and the multitude of options offered through its programme choices - from fully automatic to fully manual and with GPS.So far sharpness of picture and quality of colour has been very impressive - the colour depth and variation shown on a cock pheasant were stunning. Picture of pheasant not uploaded as too large! I also like the simplified USB contacts, which are common to other products. Pity the lens cap did not come with a cord to attach it to the camera, but if that is my only quibble.... then what more can I say?

On the whole I am very happy with this camera which, most of the time, saves me from carrying two cameras or my DSLR with two lenses. Picture quality is fine, though I was a little disappointed to discover the lack of 'RAW' which my retailer had implied that it has. The presence of a filter thread is a real plus, none of the alternative had this, also the focus/zoom ring on the lens which allows correction of autofocus in difficult situations or total manual focus (but see comments about viewfinder below) The zoom range is less than competing cameras but so far it has been more than adequate, the quality of pictures taken at full zoom actually surprised me - much better than I expected. For me the only real downsides to the camera are the viewfinder, which is awful - way too few pixels and too laggy to be useful for anything other than getting an approximation of what the image will be, especially on moving targets! And second the lack of an external charger. This is a silly omission as the price of the camera was competitive enough to have charged a bit more for the inclusion of one.
