I’ve been using SLR cameras for some years but finally got bored with lugging all the obtrusive equipment around. I gave all that up and bought a Samsung compact camera with 12 megapixels (mps) and 18x zoom, which is brilliant, but I got frustrated by not being able to see enough detail on the LCD screen, as it has no viewfinder (VF).I decided to try one with a VF and the HX90 – although it’s a couple of years old now - fitted the bill. (Note there’s no GPS with this camera, for that you need the HX90V).Also, I didn’t want a touch-screen camera as I find, from using my phone’s camera, they are too fiddly and prone to errors from a stray finger tip etc.I am impressed with the HX90’s small size – you can carry it in a pocket if you want. Also, the move up to 18mps has made a big difference and the 30x Zoom is impressive.About the VF: It’s quite small but it does allow you to see an accurate view of what the camera is seeing and to zoom in accurately on a subject without having to guess where it is on the LCD screen. Also, when the VF is up to your eye, you can get sharper images because the camera is better stabilised. The VF is tucked away in the camera when not in use – you press a button on the side and it pops up, you then have to pull the lens section forward. Reverse these actions to stow the VF. All seems a bit fiddly, but I just leave it out ready until I’ve finished for the session. Default action is to turn off the camera when closed, but you can override this if you prefer.I also love ‘messing about’ with all the settings – there are lots of things you can customise, like the monitor or VF displays; the Fn button; the Control Wheel; and there’s a control ring around the lens which you can customise plus a Help button which gives brief tips about the function you currently have selected. If you don’t want to bother with all that, just let the camera do the work. The HX90 has 3 memory slots where you can save favourite settings and call them up when required. So if you get in a mess and can’t get back to ‘normal’ settings, you can restore one of the saved sets by selection Memory Recall on the Mode dial. That’s really useful – I use it a lot.You can swivel the LCD screen upwards, handy for selfies - I use it for low-level subjects.Movies are good quality. You can choose between 3 standards, including MP4, though there are restrictions on file size and type of memory card, see the manual for details. You can connect the HX90 to your router to transfer files to your computer; use it’s Near Field Comms, where you can transfer images to your phone directly (if it the phone has this); and display pictures onto your TV via HDMI (the camera has a mini connector). All these functions have their own menu. There’s a full manual available on the Sony website.I printed it all out for reference – not too bad if you can print it as a booklet. Or you could just print out selected pages or copy/paste useful bits.

Having used a Sony A6000 for a month I decided to replace my aging Canon SX600 HS compact with the Sony HX90, which appears to have very similar controls and functions to the A6000. Unlike the Canon, which I left on Auto for the whole five years I had it (and was very pleased with the results) I find myself trying to use the HX90 like I would the A6000 by setting the apeture for more "interesting" shots, which turns out to be a waste of time. I never noticed the Canon was unable to take decent enough shots indoors without a flash but with the Sony it is made plainly obvious with the constant message "please raise the flash"; which in turn makes one question and want to change either the ISO,or the aperture (which often one cannot do, considering it's limited range) or the shutter speed that are being chosen by the camera. And considering that very strong lighting conditions are required to get an even half decent image at anything above 135mm I question whether a 30x zoom is even at all desirable on a camera this size. The in-camera charger and battery life is not all it is cracked up to be so I bought extra batteries and a separate battery charging device. The HX90 looks great and is pocket-size; it has a very good EVF and a surprisingly good flash; I also find the lens ring better for zooming than for anything else; and I will try to make more use of the SCN functions in low-light conditions whilst on holiday, but having fully familiarised myself with the camera for over a week I conclude that I am more likely to leave it set on the main Auto options or "resort" to video rather than fiddle about with the minature controls, which took me a few days to come to terms with.

Firstly, as a seasoned fan of Sony cameras, I have other models to judge this against. I suppose the closest would be the WX300 a compact which looks similar.Where the HX90 scores over the 300, is the Zeiss lens. From the first test shots I took, I noticed the clarity of the images. I've an HX400 bridge camera too which also has a Zeiss lens.In its favour, it is compact, lightweight and like my other Sony cams, easy to use a feature I like. Most of the time I use superior auto, but I do dabble and find the various features useful at times. The zoom is really good at 30 x optical.I love the flip up screen for taking selfies. The pop up viewfinder is also a clever addition to this camera especially as there is a diopter for us spec wearers. My one gripe so far is the pop up flash. Very dinky, but the way it is sited, even if the camera is not on any sort of zoom, if you are shooting something say on a table, you'll get a shadow caused by the extension of the lens. This is really annoying. On the other hand, this camera is very good in low light so with a little post adjustment, you can overcome this irritating downside.Love the NFC feature allowing you to control the cam from your phone. I've a Sony Z5, so everything works together well, but so far, I've not been able to get the camera to match up with my new Sony telly. This camera is packed with features, but when it comes down to being a camera, it performs excellently (especially in less than forgiving light). Top marks all round except for that annoying flash.

I am very pleased with my new HX90 camera. It has a smart and compact design. The zoom is excellent, and so is the battery life. I have taken it out on two trips, and the battery still has all three bars of power. I have only ever had Panasonic cameras before this, but could not find one of the current range that I was completely happy with. The range of features on this camera are just what I need, and include a panoramic mode, video, excellent macro mode plus other interesting modes such as pets and sports, which I have tried out to good effect. I feel that my old panasonic camera let more light into the lens than this camera does, but am happy with the picture quality, especially on landscape photographs in good light. I like how there is an intelligent auto mode, plus a more advanced intelligent auto mode, which helps in lower light conditions. I am a little wary of the hinge to the flap which you have to lift to charge the battery, because it is held on by only a strip of plastic, but have purchased a Sony battery charger, so that I do not have to keep lifting the flap too often. I am pleased overall that I have chosen this camera.

I wanted a small camera with a good picture quality to complement my Sony DSLR and my Gopro... the HX90 read as if it would fit the bill. It certainly does and more, great quality pictures, useful features, small light and easy to handle and a view finder which I find much better to use than a screen. It contains most of the features I have with my DSLR and a few extras, the Wifi facility is a real bonus and the link to a smart phone adds another element of use remotely. I still have not used all the features yet. I findd it may to use because the controls and user interface is very similar to by DSLR the family I am used to. if you are new to Sony cameras then it may take some extra time to get used to it.only issue is that with so many facilities in such a small camera buttons are small and if you wear reading glasses like I do some of the buttons require replacement of glasses to confirm they are what you need... however this is not a product problem its a human problem and too be honest not sure how the controls could be made ant easier. in short the camera exceed my expectations , I worry ill be leaving the DSLR behind !!!!

Probably deserves a 5 star rating, but I can only give it that extra star when I’ve had it a bit longer and seen how well it survives over the years. Initially I am very pleased with this purchase. I wanted a pocket sized camera with large zoom and a viewfinder for taking wildlife shots whilst I'm out walking. It offers all the features I need along with the ability to reconfigure most of the camera's functionality. I have a full sized SLR, which I will continue to use when I'm going out on a photoshoot. The HX90 means I can have a camera with me at all other times to capture those unplanned photo opportunities. I usually use the viewfinder rather than the screen for composing pictures.I'm very pleased with the clarity of viewfinder, but just a little worried that the mechanism for getting it out will degrade over the years. I hope to be proved wrong. The tiltable screen is another excellent feature both for difficult angles and for candid shots. Documentation that comes with the camera is minimal, but reasonable documentation is available on-line. I consider it the best small camera on the market at the moment.

with features, many of which I have not used and probably will never use. I have only had the camera a couple of weeks so perhaps this review is a little premature. I bought this as a point and shoot camera, which it does brilliantly. It's winter now so the viewfinder has not yet come into its own, but I suspect that it will be more than useful in the bright summer sun next year. The selfie flip over screen and delayed shot timer has come in useful when taking a picture of the wife and I; we no longer have to guess if we are actually in the picture we think we are taking. I love the fact that the camera is as good as these really huge mega professional cameras, or it is at least as good as most will be able to tell.We saw a man who was sitting in a coffee shop and was taking photo of something close up. Why would anyone want to carry something around with them that must have been 18 inches long? except to weirdly show off? This camera fits in a pouch taped to my belt and which goes everywhere with me. I have it to hand all the time, without it being a burden, in fact, with noticing it at all. I love it.

I have a decent expensive bridge camera, and have had posh SLRs with tons of lenses and even a Leica M240 in the past. However, as I've been ill I found it difficult to carry the weight around so, after a lot of research for a well-made camera for a reasonable price, with a good zoom lens, I chose this. I'm glad I did. The quality isn't like the Leica, but then it's £6000 cheaper, nor is it as quite good as the bridge camera or SLRs, but then that's heavy and bulky. This Sony is ideal. It goes literally everywhere with me and I've taken lots of shots I'd have missed without it: I can even carry it comfortably snuggled up in one hand. The image quality is very good indeed - I've done decent A4 prints - and I love the viewfinder (this was really important to me). It is complicated, but searching for what you need when you need it is fine, so you learn it bit by bit. Only thing I don't like is having to charge it with the battery in the camera. Wish there was a separate charger. Apart from that, brill.

This is the second HX90 I have bought. It does not do everything, because no camera does, but like I said, “It works for me.” It is the most compact amongst its peers and fits into various pockets for quick access; which is important, as I only use carry-on luggage and I travel a lot, so space is at a premium. I am not an expert by any means when it comes to photography, nor one for taking time to sort out setttings for various conditions, yet I am consistently happy with the photos; and even get a number of them printed on large canvases with great results. The viewfinder is also something I have begun using a lot more and find it helps me to get better pictures, though again, this is down to personal preference. I like things ‘simple’ and ‘reliable’, but there’s lots of things things you can do to get the most from this camera that I have chosen not to explore; however, a photography course booked for next month!

I brought this after a great holiday with a mediocre camera and wanted a better camera that I could put in my pocket, had a zoom, had close-up capacity and removed any requirement to understand photography in order to produce great photos. This is a solid product, unfolds into a real camera and has two settings that make it very, very easy to produce really, really great photos. The two settings are 1) it works it all out for you and 2) in low light and when using the zoom the camera takes several photos in very quick succession and blends them into a single photo that removed the need for a flash (great in museums or similar) and removes all the blurring - just fantastic technology.I am also told that it has all the settings for you to use it manually and set the aperture etc ....... but I have no intention of using that. Two settings and fantastic photos with a solid and easy to use camera with a great battery life.

I have had this camera for just about a year now and have been very pleased with it overall. Have used it for a variety of filming including landscapes, holiday photos, wildlife and family occasions. The size is good. Large enough to get a firm grip yet small enough to put in a pocket. The optical zoom is superb which combined with the excellent stability control allows you allows you to take exceptionally sharp photos even at maximum optical zoom without a tripod. The battery life is also very good. The vast array of settings, including many useful scene modes allow the camera to produce very good results whether you are a novice, or an experienced photographer. The only real negative to this camera is that it does not perform at all well in low light conditions. The pictures then become very grainy and definition becomes very poor. If you can live with this limitation, I would certainly recommend this camera.

Excellent build quality & superb features. Perfect for those point and shoot moments without the hassle of having to change the lens when you need to get up close. Bought the leather case with it which not only improves the comfort, but it now feels more substantial and secure in hand.Ok there's no RAW format, but in reality that's not a function I need and the flip screen, built in flash & viewfinder, G lens and processor all make up for this.Having compared it to the Panasonic/Canon equivalents, for me, the HX90 feels more worthy of the price-tag.If I had one criticism, it would be about charging the battery in camera.. Never been a fan of this, but easily resolved by buying an external batter charger (which came with EU/US adapters & in car charge lead)Apart from that, I'd say this is the best compact I've owned.. Easy to use, great features aside and the design, weight and feel are perfect for me.

TAKES GREAT STILLS. I BOUGHT THIS TO REPLACE MY CANON WHICH IS STILL A FANTASTIC CAMERA BUT IT DIDN'T HAVE WI-FI SO THIS WAS REALLY THE ONLY REASON FOR THE CHANGE.I HAVEN'T FOUND HOW TO SEND VIDEO FOOTAGE TO THE SMART TV EVEN THOUGH THE STILLS WILL GO, I CAN DO IT BY SENDING THEM TO MY ANDROID TABLET FIRST THEN I CAN CAST THE VIDEOS TO THE TV AND I HAVE SET THE CAMERA TO RUN THE VIDEOS ON MP4 AS INSTRUCTED BUT THEY STILL WILL NOT GO STRAIGHT TO THE TVIT IS VERY EASY TO USE AND INFORMATION APPEARS ON THE SCREEN FOR EACH SETTING.THE SCREEN MOVES UPWARDS SO IT IS EASY TO VIEW AT MOST ANGELS OF FILMING WHICH I FOUND HELPED WHEN RESTING IT ON A TABLE WHILE I STOOD OVER IT,SO I FIND THIS FEATURE VERY USEFUL.THE QUALITY INDOORS IS VERY GOOD BETTER THAN MY CANON.THE POP UP FLASH SEEMS A BIT ON THE FLIMSY SIDE WHEN IT COMES TO PUSHING IT BACK IN MANUALLY.

Having had a DSLR for nearly 10 years i decided i no longer wanted to carry around all the extras that go with the DSLR and of course its weight ! I started looking at reviews etc on compact cameras to compare what was available. I had Sony as one of the 3 main brands i was interested in and after much research finally decided on this one.I was not dissapointed, this camera is packed with features which i am only just touching on, i was drawn to the fact it had manual mode so i could carry on my dslr ways. The photos are excellent, high clarity and fantastic colours. I am most impressed with the zoom which is 30x once it reaches the limit, where most cameras switch to digital zoom and go pixelated, the HX90 just carries on !I was able to zoom into an aircraft leaving a trail in the sky of which i could barely see myself !

Having lost my last canon Ixsus and finding the SLR too bulky for vacations, I bought the Sony, never having had a sony camera before. It's gorgeous. The 30x optical zoom is a bit over the top but fun, and the range of effects and settings is impressive. But there is one feature that stands out - the electronic viewfinder. Vacations mean sunshine to me and it's always impossible to see what you're photographing in sunlight if the LCD display is all you've got to go on. This camera has a pop-up electronic view-finder and the image switches to it when your eye gets close. Genius! And it pushes down into the body of the camera when not needed. So the camera is small enough to fit in a pocket and produces results that exceeded my expectations.I've still got lots to learn and lots of features to play with but so far I love it.
