This new Sony DSC-WS830 is a light and compact camera which looks neat and stylish (I got the purple model for a change!) and will be a useful addition to anyone on the move. The camera purportedly weighs in at 120g WITH battery pack and I must say it is extremely light and portable - this is probably its biggest asset. The lens is a Zeiss Vario-Tessar 8x zoom which extends out in three stages at the most telephoto end of the spectrum. It equates to a 25mm - 200mm lens on an old-style 35mm camera (or 4.5-36mm on a digital one). It is actually a pretty decent lens. It's a 20.1 mega pixel camera so plenty of detail is captured. The colours all came out pretty well without much distortion at the edges (given the size and cost of the camera)so I was fairly impressed. The shortest shooting distance is 5cm.The screen is a 6.7cm type - but I was a little disappointed with this - the actual pictures look quite dull and grainy even on this whereas the actual shots are much better.Hitting the smiley face button and the camera searches for a smiley face in the picture and focuses on that. Bit of a gimmick? Yes probably? But does it work? Well it did when I tried it!Zoom works via a W/T two-part button which woriks ok (although a little fast) but isn't that easily accessible while you are lining up for a shot and I prefer the usual type (like on a Panasonic Lumix) where the zoom button is sited on the top plate of the camera. There are a number of focus tracking options and focus weighted on different areas (as per normal). The "instruction manual" is nothing more than one very large piece of paper with the most basic of instructions (how to insert the battery, memory card, charge the unit, set the clock, take images (i.e. click the shutter button) and view the images. This is almost useless as pretty much all of these "functions" are the same on any camera. You would begin to thihk that there were no other functions other than point and shoot on this camera (because there is no other indication actually on the unit that it has other more advanced fucntions - unlike other cameras that have a dial for their various functions - all this oens are via a "menu" button. So, if you want anything useful at all out of the camera you need to go to the Sony website, put in the model number of your new camera and look for the Help Guide. The "Help Guide" is online but it is a little infuriating trying to read it because it is in HTML and you have to go through a nest of different links to get to anything. Then you have to start all over again for the next subject. Why they couldn't just give you a nice PDF so that you can download it and have it ion your pc, tablet or phone I'll never know. I want to be able to have a look at the workings of my cameras while out in the wilds and this is just an unusable way to get the info!Three main functions for recording - normal photo, panoramic photo and movie-mode. Photo and movie mode worked fine but each time I tried to do the panoramic I only managed to get round 180 degrees before it finished. I'm not sure even a superhero could get a spin on the full 360 degrees before the recording stopped! There are a myriad of exposure functions - you can have I - Intelligent Auto which does all of the exposure settings automatically, the P - Program setting which is auto exposure but you can adjust some of the settings, or Picture Effect (Toy, Pop, Part or Soft High-key) which give you different vivid or warm or subdued colours depending on your preference for this particular shot. Lastly there is the Scene mode which allows you to have one of 11 different scene selections: Soft Skin, Portrait, Landscape, Night Portrait, Night Scene, High Sensitivity, Gourmet, Pet, Beach, Snow, Fireworks! You can view with or without gridlines in your viewfinder and with or without all of the details of your shots. Also after each picture there will be a display of the shot with a recap of the F stop aperture and shutter speed used (if that's you bag - it work for me!)This camera ticks a number of boxes for me. If you want a camera which is decent quality and you can carry around anywhere without it putting a severe dent in your pocket (either by size & weight or cost) then this should be a serious contender. I would have liked to have given this camera 4 1/2 stars but decided on 5 just cos I like the funky purple colour. A hit for me!

For a basic snap camera the W830 is fine. Lots of tech features for various shooting modes but within rather limited shooting options and I think this is what the majority of buyers for this type of camera want, also I think the compact size is a strong selling point.Outside on a bright sunny day it works perfectly and the zoom delivers good results. Movies and sound, for very basic shooting, are reasonable. The panorama option I thought was really rather superficial, far too short at a few seconds to do anything creative though maybe useful if you wanted to shoot a room interior or line of people.Nice of Sony to replace the rather ungainly zoom lever on the WX80 with a much more easy to use toggle switch on this camera. The downside for me with the W-830 are not the images but a couple of other areas to do with the camera and Sony. The battery/card cover is rather flimsy and could easily be broken accidentally. It takes longer than I would have expected for the camera to get ready for the next shot. Sony persist in producing dedicated accessories for their products. Here you get a USB cable to connect the camera to a pc for charging or downloading images, this looks like a unique Sony connector cable (it will not even fit the slightly older WX80 camera) and as another review has said: don't lose it. Of course you can take the card out and download images with a reader but you can't recharge the battery without the Sony cable. The Instruction Manual is just a concertina sheet of one-side printed paper and only covers the very basics. Even the two PDFs on the Sony website just repeat the same information (one PDF has it in several languages) to get any real information you have to click on 'Help Guide' and explore various pages. A worthwhile one is 'Before Use', then click on 'List of icons displayed on the screen'. Amazingly there are several dozen. Sony should really provide all the information in the 'Help Guide' as a downloadable PDF, as they do on their US site! I still have a 2004 Sony Manual to the Cyber-shot P100 with 126 pages of step-by-step illustrated instructions. The screen icons for the P100 numbered seventy-four (and to be honest I would still use the camera if the LCD screen was bigger)If you want to take straightforward record-of-the-moment shots the W830 is as good as any other compact camera.

I already own a few cameras, mostly DSLR's which can be heavy and bulky to carry around, my mobile phone camera just doesn't cut it for what I need. I did a lot of research for a small compact camera, there are many out there. I looked at the Sony products as they are a reliable brand and great value for money. I set myself a budget and found this little gem! I suffer from arthritic hands and was worried that the size might be problematic, but being the best (in my opinion) I could find for the money I decided to give it a go.I wasn't disappointed. The camera is well made and presented. The functions are very easy to navigate through and work even with my poor hands! I am very pleased with the camera, and the pictures/video are fantastic quality. It would be unkind to compare the camera with larger cameras like my DSLR's but for a camera this size it certainly is very impressive. As with all things there are plus and minuses and here are mine.On the plus side - love the size and feel of the camera, fits perfectly in the pocket. Nice big screen to view the photo's and videos.Great settings for saving power, even the viewing screen has two for this. The flash is excellent.Colours are vibrant and vivid, a setting for every occasion! The Carl Zeiss lens is wonderful, giving crisp sharp pictures right through from Macro to full zoom.Auto focus is precise and quick.Access to the battery and memory card is good. Can be charged using the USB cable which is handy when out and about as I use the USB cigarette lighter adaptor.Setup was easy, the menu is really that simple to use!Now for the minuses..I couldn't find what was the best memory card to use or size? One card I tried a high end 10 SDHC kept coming back Unable to store picture? The 16GB 6 SDHC seems to work well.Shame it didn't come with a protective case or cover. The auto focus and capture button was a little difficult to find I had to keep looking for it.Overall, I would recommend this camera to anyone who is looking for a small compact camera which is full of funky and cool features and gives great pictures!

Opening up the small box reveals a very small camera which turns out to punch well above its weight. We all know appearances can be deceptive and they certainly can with this Sony. Coming in at just 9.5 cm across (of which 6.7 cm is taken up by the LCD screen) this fits nicely into a pocket or a handbag. The camera has an impressive 20.1 mega pixels and a 6x optical zoom. You can expand capacity by installing a memory card - not included. It has a battery life of approximately 100 minutes, 40 minutes if taking videos (both according to the manufacturer). The device itself has standard settings like auto flash, with some neat extras thrown in.For example it has 'beauty mode'which is meant to show people's faces at their most appealing. You can for example choose a setting for your skin type. I couldn't notice a great deal of difference when I tried these out but then again with beauty mode and 'soft skin effect' let's just say it has its work cut out in my case! (sadly does not come with a plastic surgery kit as well). You can also use other features such as shooting pictures that give the effect of using a toy camera. I tried this and the only effect I noticed was I wanted my mummy and had the sudden urge to watch Peppa Pig.There are lots of features like this to play around with but most importantly, everything you expect to be there is included (such as landscape mode) and if you are partially sighted you can increase the font size on the LCD Screen. The think I liked least about the camera was the charging process. Although this took only 20 minutes it charges with the camera off and you know what is happening via a charging light on top. This gives off a very dim discrete light when charging and it took me a while to figure out if it was even lit. Only this prevents me awarding 5 stars to a reasonably priced product which is small but powerful and has all the features you'd expect.I have to go now - there's a repeat of Teletubbies coming on.

Having been committed to scrapping my 4.1MP Kodak digital camera due to failure of its circuitry, I found it practically impossible to purchase a digital camera that produced an almost linear image as it seems that nowadays, all compact cameras produce a good image but via a wide-angle lens, so distortion of facial features at close quarters or shots at infinity, produce curvature on upright buildings, poles etc, towards the vertical ends of each shot. This is something that I did not want in a digital compact camera, especially for recording professional railway photographs. I spent almost a day on trying to set the camera up for time, date etc and it seems that the instructions omitted to state that a down arrow should be 'hit'to get the next stage after pressing the OK button following LANGUAGE setting. My daughter set the camera up in an instant but agreed that the instruction to proceed from LANGUAGE setting lacked an extra instruction. Anyway the camera has been successfully commissioned and results are quite acceptable but I would have preferred a choice of a much lesser MB capability as 20MB picture downloads take a lot of bytes up on the PC. The compactness of the camera are a setback for an elderly pensioner who is loosing some dexterity in hands.

I bought this camera to replace one I had purchased to replace a much-loved Panasonic Lumix, which unfortunately got a minute insect trapped inside the lens. I'd bought a Nikon Coolpix, as my husband has Nikon DSLRs. Sadly, this camera drove me mad by its many issues on focusing, especially on skies which I love to photograph, and also poor quality indoor shots. I therefore did my research and decided on this little beauty from Sony. I haven't had it long yet but so far it is behaving wonderfully. No difficulties focusing on anything so far, the indoor shots I've taken are bright and colourful and the video is smooth and easy to take. It is also simple to take panoramic shots, if you like doing those.I haven't investigated all the features yet but so far I am very pleased indeed I chose it. The only minor thing I have noticed is that it seems to take a teensy bit longer to write to the SD card than the Nikon and the Lumix - but I can live with that. It has renewed my joy in photography.

Haven't had this camera for long, but so far, I have been really impressed with the picture quality. The first surprise I received was when I opened the box and found this titchy little camera hiding in a corner, I almost missed it.As a result, it is so easy to transport around and could be easily popped into a shirt pocket with the minimum of intrusion. The quality of pictures are as good, if not better than I have experienced with small digital cameras and the controls and different settings are quite self explanatory.Five or ten minutes playing around should be all you need to familiarise with the relevant features.I was intending buying the Sony with 30 times zoom but have found that thiscamera's 8 times zoom is plenty.I am really delighted my purchase and would gladly recommend this to anyone who was in the market for a really great point and click camera.

When my old compact camera died after long service, I needed a handy new one at budget range (I have the SLR for serious stuff). This seems to fit the bill and the pocket better than anything else in its price range. Neat camera, handy to use, 10x the features of the old one, a thrid the size and half the price. Great lens too, which is v important to me. However good the electronics, they can only work with the image they get.If I have minor quibbles (at this price I feel guilty even mentioning them), it's the delay between clicking and the image review showing, and that I'd prefer a more traditional full user manual than the online version: there are features I haven't even discovered yet and a manual to sit and read means I'd probably find them sooner (if I wasn't a bloke, who tends to feel reading the instuctions is the last resort of the desperate!)

I bought this camera for my wife as a replacement for a camera that we had had for 6 years and which went wrong. Wife wanted a small camera that fitted in her handbag/pocket and this one certainly does that. However, I certainly won't be making use of it much as I find that it is too small for my large size hands and that there are not many ways to hold it without obstructing things like the flash + am frightened of dropping it - give me a bigger camera anytime!!! Having said that you cannot fault the camera's specs or it's performance as a point and shoot. It has many interesting features and performs very well - picture quality is very good.Overall excellent value at the price and I am sure the wife will enjoy it's use for some time to come (once she has learnt how to use all of the features!!!)

♦ Brief ♦The W830 is within Sony's "budget" range of compact cameras and is available for a fairly low price, but sacrifices a lot of extra features the more "premium" cameras have, such as WiFi, NFC, extra zoom and better components etc...This camera comes in our different colours (black, silver, purple or pink) and is so compact, it can fit into the palm of my hand. It's also very comfortable camera to hold and is very light in weight.Photo quality is okay, it can take some pretty decent photos but due to its small sensor, quality is going to be limited.♦ Box Contents & Recommended Extras ♦- Box Contents: W830 Digital Camera | Battery | USB Cable | AC Adaptor | Power Cable | Wrist Strap |Instruction Manual.- Recommended Extras:

The W830 is small (I mean very small !) so it's easy to fit in your pocket. The photos look sharp and clear on my computer screen and without the lens distortion you get with (even an expensive) smartphone camera. The optical zoom seems to work well, and it takes quite bright photos indoors without the flash. It comes with a mains charger, but I like that you can also charge it from your computer with the supplied cable. With the Sony software, it's easy to transfer the photos from camera to computer. The only negative that I've found so far is that there is a noticeable lag between taking a photo, and the camera being ready to take the next one.

A gift two months ago and a replacement for a Fuji Finepix, the W830 is compact, with good resolution and a number of excellent features. I have yet to fully explore the possibilities and this gives rise to a major criticism. The only user information, apart from the very basic setup info, is online, and this is navigable only when the user has a reasonable idea of the features available. I found the online manual poorly set out and much more of a trouble shooter and FAQ source than a user manual document. Such a shame, as the product itself appears to be of very good quality and design. Please issue a hard copy manual with the sale package.

Bought this to replace my sony dcw330 which unfortunately broke didnt think I could get a better one. So wae delighted with this model much smaller than the 330 but as I suffer with arthritis its so much lighter so very helpful to me. I love the panoramic feature still practising to get a smooth sweep but 2 I have taken are ok for first attempts I am just a play photographer but my husband who has been taking photos for over 50 years was stunned at the quality of images I would say to anyone wantig a lightweight digital camera dont hesitate to purchase this model. I even formatted the cameras and sd cards myself.

24.12.2016

I'm fairly pleased with this camera, though I'm finding it difficult to use the menu. I wanted to check through all the possible shooting settings, but I just can't find a way to do it. I've checked with the online manual but this is very confusing and doesn't explain anything clearly. I previously had a Sony which looked exactly the same but had a 10X zoom (unfortunately it fell in the sea and never recovered!), and I found that much easier to understand and use. This one seems to be a cut price version (much cheaper), and I would have preferred to have another like my last one, but it's no longer available.

5.5.2019

I bought this to replace a 12 year old Sony camera that was worn out and it is better than the last one which was pretty good. To date the camera the camera is performing well and is producing sharp clear photos. Only gripe is that there is a bit of a lapse when the screen goes blank between pressing the button and the camera being ready for the next shot. But that be my unfamiliarity with all the settings. I've long been an admirer of Sony having bought a nine inch portable television in 1971. Sony went to the moon with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin don't ya know. Tht's a pretty good recommendation
