I've been playing this game almost non-stop since it came out, although largely in the Domination mode - capturing all my enemy's Capitals, and I guess I'm disappointed. To use a football analogy, this is a game of two halves. Unequal halves however. The first part of the game is the long slow building of districts and cities. I know one is supposed to specialise, but you have to wait a long time to be able to build some districts. For example, you can't even build a workshop till your city has 8 people and you have constructed an 'Industrial District' (which in itself can take 20 turns). Building districts is a lot of extra work for little reward.Unlike Civ 5 the new Technology and Civics trees are longer and contain less far significant steps. Every few turns one achieves an advance, but a minor one. It's like being drip-fed a slow steady movement forward. Whilst this means something is almost always happening, it also means nothing significant is ever happening. There are no 'ah yes, I've got there!!' moments, like when you get a Great Engineer in Civ 5 and create a new wonder. Great people here come often, but do boring mostly things like make some unspecified future advance marginally easier to get! The bottom line is that the game is deep and complex but frankly boring. In the second half however, when you've built lots of cities and have lots of Tech, the game goes into complete reverse. Suddenly I'm getting lots of great new advances, but much too easily. Things start to move too far too fast. I just got Victoria's new ship the 'Sea Dog', but almost before I can make it and use it, my technology has move to allow me to upgrade it to a Submarine. I'm getting Battleships in the 1750's followed in three turns by Flight!I can attack a capital city (like Washington) with my Battleships (upgraded from frigates in about 10 turns), but nobody is there defending it. Three shots from my Battleships and Washington falls, my Redcoat pops up inside and the city instantly has it's own defences. No unhappiness, no having to wait before I can control the city. It's mine, lock, stock and barrel, the moment my ship enters. Then no counter attacks, no interest from the American troops. It's as if the AI hasn't a clue. An hour or so later I've taken all the capitals and the game is done. But No fight, no battles. So I whack up the difficulty level ... same result.I think the reason for this second half acceleration is that I put Campus's in all my cities and thus my technology score mounts up quickly, but surely the AI must expect those sort of tactics! Moving from Caravel to Battleships in 40 turns just can't be right.I really want to love this game, but in the end it's just a lot of hard work and no real emotional involvement. Maybe on different victory conditions (Religious or Tech) it works better, but Domination stinks!(And by the way, who wrote the Intro. Surely even the Americans know the Stone Age was an era of human technological prehistory (prior to the Bronze and Iron ages) and came AFTER the first upright steps of Humans. I think they mean the great beasts of the Dinosaur period - e.g. Jurassic and Triassic eras). Like much in this game, could do with some polish!AFTER first UpdateOK, the update certainly improves some things. Suddenly the AI characters are doing (or getting) loads of research. Likewise your opponents are now not quite so unfriendly, and the Missionary rush is not quite so intense. In terms of warfare the AI is better at protecting its cities and all in all the game is more balanced (also I can now name my cities, whoopee!) . However these changes have different effects at different levels. At the 'King' difficulty the game now plays better and you get a more challenging fight (although the AI tactics are still pretty dumb). That said at the 'Emperor' level your opponents now (magically?) have very high research income very early in the game. For example, you found three cities and immediately build a campus and library in each and your research output is around 40 per turn. Sounds fair, until you see some of your opponents are getting over 100 research points in the same time frame from the same number of cities. This is typical Civilization tactics. Your AI adversaries don't fight the same way you do; at higher levels they have unexplained bonuses from nowhere! In terms of gameplay this means at the higher levels you're always playing 'catch-up'. Whatever advantages the other civs start with don't increase however (and not all have the same levels), so you have to rush to build more cities and more libraries and universities before their units become too far ahead technologically. In practice this means it is much harder to win at high levels, which may or may not be a good thing. In summary the Update certainly improves the game, which is deep and complex and now very challenging. Still not sure the balance is right though, but that may just be me! :)

This game arrived mid day, on launch day. I was delighted to find that it came with a fabric map, which is beautiful, and is going on my wall. This game is a turn-based strategy game, where you control a civilization from the ancient era up until the information era, and you must try to get a 'victory' by either: spreading a religion across the map (religious), build up a large tourist industry (cultural), settling on a new planet (science), or destroying everyone else's capital city (domination). It came with a Steam code, which I used without using the disk that was also in the box.The game downloaded very quickly, as it is only 3.9GB.It launched very quickly, and within a couple of minutes I was in,and playing. This game has many great new features, but I am just going to mention a few. The AI (Artificial Intelligence) is way better than it was previously , each civilization has a purpose, and a belief. For example, in my first game I was on an island with two very militaristic civilisations, and it didn't go well for me, and my obliviousness. This is always apparent throughout gameplay, and it adds much more depth to diplomacy, and the game in general. I personally love the art style of the game, it is a beautiful bright cartoon aesthetic. Not only does this design look good, it works practically as well. Finally, this game has a brilliant new UI (User Interface). It is much sharper than the previous game, and it is laid out much more logically, and simplistically. In the image, I am controlling the grey icons, everyone else is hostile, because I really managed to annoy them somehow. As well as my campaign where I was slaughtered by the AI, I also started a multiplayer game with a friend, who bought the game. I must say I was impressed at how smoothly the game ran, with no lag or delay on either side. It is a very nice way to have some friendly competition. There is a faster speed now added for online games also, and it is simply called online. This has greatly helped us progress.Overall, this is a great game, and I think although the price is high it is worth it.(If there is anything you want to know feel free to message me, or refer to the online wikia: [...] )

I don't know what I think about Civilization VI. It's huge and that makes me think I will never actually know it well. I can't remember which version was the first I played and there are things I miss from "the good old days" and there are things that are better in the new version. I don't like the current ship concept where a lot of units can turn into a boat and float to the next continent. In the "good old days" transport ships which could take various numbers of units had to be invented then built before units could be loaded up and transported. I found it more realistic than the current situation. The problem was that it slowed the game down a lot while you waited for transport ships to get back from the other side of the world to transport more units.Which brings me to another moan. In the current version besieging a city is hardly ever successful and takes forever. It slows the game down. Lets remember, it is a game. Yes, in real life besieging a city was a very long process but it often succeeded. They had no where to go. Their food ran out eventually. The enemy would dig tunnels and replace the wall footings with timber then set a fire and stand clear while it all collapsed. In later years there would be gunpowder in the tunnels. It wasn't impossible to take a city. In the current version I try and develop the cities I set up because besieging is boring.Do I want to go back to slow transport? Probably not. I would definitely like to see some changes to besieging. Does it stop me enjoying the game? No. I have been playing it for years and will continue. Now that I play it on Nintendo Switch it's even better as I can play it in the park, on the train, in a car. I can play on the console or I can plug into a huge screen (as long as it has an HDMI socket) and play on that. The fact that the controllers are wireless is another big plus as I can be comfortable as I play or I can slot them into the sides of the console and have the whole thing in my hands. The Switch also keeps things up-to-date by downloading updates to the internal memory. Civilization and Switch - it can't be beaten.

Civilization is a long lived series that I've played for as long as I can remember, and from what I've seen so far this is my favourite to date. It's probably the biggest update to the series in terms of how the game plays. Cities are no longer a single tile that own a bunch of tiles around them - the district system means that your city actually expands out to fill that space itself. Actions and discoveries you make out in the world affect how your civilization develops in terms of technology. Religion is there in the base game instead of having to wait for an expansion. The civics side of things has been completely revamped, with tech trees that work much like the normal science tech trees. There's a new policy "card" system introduced, where different government types can implement different number and types of policies. The main game map has had a huge visual overhaul that while it takes time to get used to, it's actually pretty gorgeous. Diplomacy, combat & promotions, great people - all have been redeveloped and feel new and fresh. There is very little about the game that hasn't chamged at least a bit - and most of it by quite a lot. Yet they've still kept the core essence, so it still feels like a Civ game, but better.Sure that what farm is nice, but it's probably time to pave over it and build an industrial zone to boost your production. One frustration in the past was having to build your city directly on the coast if you ever wanted to build ships in it. No longer - the harbour district can be built anywhere in the area of your city, while keeping the core of your city away from the coast, safe from coastal raiders.Civilization V was pretty barebones at release, and while it did mature into a very well rounded game with expansions, after a few games I think it's safe to say that it's already at least the equal of Civ 5 with all of its expansions - so I can't wait to see what the inevitable expansions will bring.

For those who are familiar with Civilization will notice improved development of the game.Developing a city is more complex as you now have districts within a city to develop specialised areas. Progress has now been split into two trees Civics and Technology (Scientific). This separation has made competing against AI much more difficult as the AI are actually behaving much more like human players rather than AI. I have only played a few times but can see even at Settler level (Level 1) it's not so easy to win playing against AI. Beware of those Civilizations with highly developed religious qualities such as Gandhi (India) - he is unlikely to attack you,but before you know it his missionaries have overwhelmed you and religiously converted your cities - and you have lost (religious victory). Talking of winning and losing brings me to a negative point (the reason I have removed a star). There is no indication as to why you lost (or won) just it happens and unless you have experience with the game you don't know why and it's not explained to you. The history replay has also been removed which I found useful as to understanding how other Civilizations played in comparison. Another default is that if there is no winner by 500 turns then the civilization that score the most points wins, but unlike previous versions you are not given a warning (e.g. 20 turns to go). So overall good graphics, less likely to crash or freeze than previous versions and some good developments of cities but needs minor tweeks to improve it overall.

Excellent strategy game. Playing as a famous historical figure, you start out with a settler and a warrior and establish a city, then cities, and ultimately a civilisation. Using scientific, military economic and social advances, you will become more powerful and have more options. You also need to deal with other civilisations and single city states using diplomacy, trade, espionage or military might. It is a constant juggling act to build up your cities, have enough money coming in, upgrading your military, building wonders of the world, changing gifts and policies. It is challenging but a lot of fun! I found it a bit awkward to play at first so I would recommend using the tutorial to get familiar with the basics you need to get started. The game then becomes very easy to play, all the information is there for to see and base decisions on. You can also alter the difficulty level, map size and game speed to suit your needs and preferred gaming experience, and you can also play against friends online (as long as you an internet connection). There are also many ways to win or are least have a good time. This is a very good strategy game, very user friendly once you use the tutorial and great value for money as I have spent many hours playing it. Highly recommended.

I have played Civilization for 21 of the 25 years this game has been in existence. I know well that not every new installment is necessarily an improvement but this one definitely is. I was a massive fan of Civ 5, but only after I got the two main expansion packs God and Kings and Brave New World. This game is amazing from day one. I only got the game yesterday and had to wait until 4pm until it was delivered, but I have already put about ten hours into this game and I love it. Everything I liked about Civ 5 seems to be in the game and I there are some real improvements. I haven't had enough time to go into depth but I will try to come back and do so after I have played the game through a couple of times. If you are already a Civ fan you will love this game so buy it.If you have never played Civ before then this will be a great game to be introduced to the greatest turn based strategy game ever. I must get back and play some more. I have captured my first enemy capital and only just really started to explore the new district system.

Deeper city management is the main feature for singleplayer. Stacking more units on same tile is the main multiplayer change. It is very complete package for vanilla Civ game, with religion, trade, espionage already included..AI is even worse than one would expect and does some immersion breaking things, but I find the game to be pretty good on technical level. Art style is the main issue as it creates Farmville vibe, rather than glorious empire atmosphere. Where the game lacks on looks, it makes up with sound. The soundtrack is great, with opening music being instant classic. Sean Bean's epic voice for narrator of the game was bullseye choice, and his acting performance is absolutely brilliant. There is 20 Civ leaders to chose from, so even without DLC the game offers great replayability. With tweaks to citizen satisfaction and city state interaction, I can say that the game plays better than it looks, but the Nickelodeon leaders screens are hard to overlook due to AI's constant, and pointless commenting.

A new dawn. Well, almost. Heavy duty graphics that will REALLY hit your graphics card - this is a game for a PC or a gaming laptop - such as an MSI. Graphics are impressive and Sean Bean is now the narrator. All the usual features are there, if modified somewhat. The Builder only gets three builds, then he vanishes. Roads are only built by trade routes (run that one by me again Mr Designer) and the Civilopedia is as obtuse as ever. The Royal Navy still rules the waves and I STILL don't understand religion. You still cannot pass a unit through another friendly nation unit and units can still walk across water without needing a ship. The AI is still incompetent, in fact a lot of 'stills'are still there! It's a step beyond Civ V, which I never really got on with, but still not as adaptable (at this time) as the earlier CIV's such as IV where I had a great time creating customised worlds and the units to play them.Buy the PC version and then register online with steam - it's cheaper

Okay, so these sort of games don't transfer well across to consoles, so I wasn't expecting too much. I've always loved the Civ games, right back to the first one in the early 90's, but they were always on PC or ST, which are both much better machines for strategy styled games. But after I read some of the reviews, I thought it was worth a shot, so I've now got the game. What can I say, It's brilliant! The best strategy game of this style that has been released on PS4. The controls (which normally are such an issue) work really well on Civ 6. The developers have clearly spent time working out how to make the experience enjoyable for PS4 owners. The gameplay is just as good as it's ever been, and (so far) it's been compelling to play... infact the time has flown by (at one point I realised it was 2.30am!) If you've got a PS4 and you love strategy games that are turn based, then this has GOT to be in your collection!

A brilliant progression from Civilisation 5. Its not just a graphics make over, the game has been thoughtfully redesigned and enhanced, but retains its addictive nature by the bucket load.. It's expensive, but having played Civ 5 to death for a number of years, I was prepared to pay the price, albeit reluctantly. If like me you are not convinced you want to invest £40 - £70 in a game, then I'd still recommend the previous release, Civilisation V, which s now available for a fraction of this price, as a complete package with all the ad-on (Black cover with gold V)Civ V is still a great game to lose yourself in.Civ VI is the next step, if you ever tire of Civ VYou have to register the game through Steam, but strangely its cheaper to buy the CD on Amazon and enter the code to install using Steam. The CD also contains useful guide materials.

This is the full version of the game and if you like civilization games then you will love this game. I gave it 4 stars because it really is fun but I feel the series peaked with civilization 3 on the pc and that game looked so much better. Civ 6 is pretty much the same with some added extras lots of civilizations to play as but I've had trouble turning of victory conditions and end before I've even finished research tree I'm sure there is a way but I have not found it on the switch version but I did on the pc version. I've had zero bugs in my 20 -30 full game plays and games not frozen or slowed down due to many troops like previous civ games hasAlso hopefully mega dlc coming to this editionon the switch with rise of tides, natural disasters and more.....Hopefully!!

If you own a Nintendo Switch and enjoy strategy titles then this is going to be right up your street. First off this is a good port to the switch and once you get a grip of the controls its easy to play both on the TV screen and on the handheld device.Civilisation VI in its current form is perhaps inferior to the previous Civilisation however dont let this put you off as it is still a very good Civilisation game and the district mechanic is a great addition to the franchise. The switch version comes with all the minor DLC to date and I believe there is a large DLC yet to be released on switch which will potentially make the game even better.I highly recommend picking this up for the switch ifyou enjoy sinking a few hours into a good strategy game.

ive given the game four stars without playing it as i know what the game is about, ive been playing civ for years,so im not going to mark it down to one star because my copy of civ had been opened and the serial code stolen from inside the box, that wouldent be fair to the game, and to be fair to amazon a replacement copy was and has been sent within mins of my phone call, so fair play to them, im guessing ive been given a returned copy as the box was torn and no wrapping on either that or the dvd case inside, would be nice if these things were checked before sending, ive seen the you tube vidsof the game so i feel i can score it a four without as i said actually playing the game silly as itsounds...

A beautiful game. I have played every single Civilization since II, and I am positively impressed by this one.The graphic choices, while more colourful and pastel-like, are really nice. Unpacking the cities was a smart move, that makes the city-managing more challenging and interesting. International politics are a bit more articulated, in particular concerning the relations with city-states.If you have never played a Civilization game, this is a good place to start as any: you will find a smart and complex 4X game, with great dynamics and great historical depth. If you are a veteran player, you will still find everything that made Civilization the giant it is, with new challenges.
