So I was never really that good at fighting games, but on receipt of this Fightpad from acclaimed gaming peripheral brand Razer I figured I’d wheel out Soul Calibur and any other fighting games I have bottled up and see if I could get better at them with the help of this controller.A couple of obvious points of difference between this controller and the standard DualShock 4 controller. Firstly, this is not a wireless controller, it is hard-wired with no options. Secondly, it doesn’t have analogue sticks, and some of the buttons have been re-positioned onto the face of the controller. This is considered a more optimal layout for fighting games, but it will make the controller wholly unsuitable for certain other games on console that would rely upon analogue controls. In use, I can certainly say that it seems very quick in use, and it is novel having more buttons at a potentially easier ergonomic position for button mashing over the standard position. What I will concede after some extensive testing though, is that my skill at fighting games does not seem to be governed by the controller alone as I do not seem to be any better at them than I was before. But that’s not to say you might not be more successful than me. I have a poor memory and recall of small sequence commands and that’s part of the problem for me as I just can’t remember most of the moves that might be helpful in different scenarios. No controller is going to help me with that. For a price of over £100 (at time of review) that’s a lot of money for a niche controller, but if fighting games are absolutely your favourite genre and you want to be the best you can, a fighting-oriented wired gamepad such as this might give you more success and enjoyment over the standard DualShock 4.

Razer have a reputation for creating excellent gaming peripherals and this PS4 fighting pad is another example of their expertise in making superb items. The pad is designed specifically for fighting games - which are more traditionally played at a high level with fighting-stick-controllers, which tend to sit on your lap and have a fairly large footprint and buttons to mimic arcade machines. This pad does away with the extra housing and puts all the controls on the smaller pad, which will be great for gamers who don't want the extra bulk of a stick-controller.The buttons have been laid out with this specific game type in mind - the face buttons have been moved around and added to,and there are no thumbsticks, simply a D-Pad instead which is optimised for fighting games. The choice to make the controller hardwired makes perfect sense considering the target market - fighting-games are won and lost on a frame perfect basis so the extra lag introduced by a wireless connection could make all the difference, and as you will be buying this pad for fighting-games almost exclusively it would be silly to include wireless. The build quality is excellent and you can be confident the components will all be top quality and reliable. I've used many Razer products in the past and have never experienced any issues with their hardware. If you're looking for a fight-game specific controller you probably play to a level where you need reliability and carefully thought out design on your controller, and with this Razer product you can't go wrong.

First off - if you don't play fighting games to a high standard, this controller is not for you. It isn't suitable for most other genres of game due to the unusual layout: there are no thumbsticks and there an extra two face buttons. I imagine it could still be useful for indie games and emulators where the lack of a thumbstick isn't an impediment.I tested this controller with Street Fighter V and Soul Calibur 7 on PC and found it a marked improvement over my Xbox One pad for a number of reasons:1. The d-pad is much more suitable for transitioning between movements in a precise, quick manner.2. The face buttons are eminently mashable: they feel solid and the actuation depth is quite low,so it's possible to press them very quickly. When you first pick up the controller, the buttons have a cool metallic feel that speaks of quality.3. The extra face buttons allow for easier combinations and bindings.4. The controller can be switched to a competition mode so you don't press Start or Share in the heat of battle.5. The general construction of the controller feels significantly more robust than the current iteration of the dual-shock.Fighting game aficionados tend to be passionate and obsessive due to the hours of practice and agony required to stay competitive, so I can imagine any tactile advantage they can get will repay its price. Hence the 5 stars despite the high cost and lack of versatility as a regular controller - if you know you'll be playing hundreds of hours of fighting games, this controller is probably worth it.

This is an expensive and highly specialised (wired-only, not wireless) gamepad specifically designed for fighting games like Tekken or Street Fighter, which is a bit niche -it's aimed at the "Pro competition" gamers out there. Physically it's a lot like gamepads from consoles in the 1990s - you get a d-pad and various triggers & buttons, but no analogue joysticks, so this will simply not work well, if at all, for anything *but* fighting games and possibly the odd side-scrolling shooter. You also get a small touchpad, mostly for PS4 use, although I tried this with a Windows 10 PC - there's a switch on the back to flip between interfaces. As with a lot of Razer kit, it's very well made, and everything on it is loudly clicky (it mostly uses microswitches everywhere) and it's solidly built; it's also quite large for a gamepad, which might work for you depending on your hand-size, but it's not incredibly heavy either. It's slightly larger than a standard Xbox controller. The ergonomics are generally good, then, depending on your own preferences. This is an expensive niche product though, and not suitable for all game types out there - it's not a replacement for a standard PS4 or Win10 gamepad as it lacks analogue sticks entirely, and, it's twice the price of typical, official (and wireless) Sony or Xbox controllers. Only you can decide if it's worth it for what you want, really.

If you're not all that serious about your gaming or playing the high speed fighting games then you probably won't want, and certainly not need, this controller. If you're reading this review then you will probably already understand the usefulness of a controller like this.It is certainly well made and robust, as Razer products usually are, and though this is a wired controller that does not detract from the enhanced performance this controller enables. If you have not used a controller like this before, it will take a certain amount of adapting to the improved layout but it is worth it for the faster response. I used it for Street fighter and found it just gave me an edge to my playing ability.I'm not at all obsessed with reaching professional standard playing but found I enjoyed the game more, with less frustration and faster progress. For anyone who does take their gaming seriously something like this is a must-have really. Yes, it is a bit of a niche market and this controller may seem pricey, but most hobbies involve some investment and I think that the enjoyment this controller can provide for serious gamers may make the cost worthwhile. For anyone else ( myself included ) this is a useful alternative control that can happily be used when needed in conjunction with a standard controller for other games. Excuse me now... someone's looking for a fight...….

This is a must have too for any serious PS4 fighting games player (no good at all for other types of games and activities). The Razer Raion Fightpad is specifically designed for fighting style games. This controller is wired with a decent lead length. Out does not have the analogue sticks but utilises the traditional 6 face button layout which is much preferred by gamers for quick responsive gameplay as well as an 8 way D-Pad that feels incredibly responsive to touch. There is also a 3.5 audio Jack for your gaming headset. My 17 year old son is a master of the fighting game genre (or so he says) like Streetfighter and other similar game.He was really pleased to test drive this fight pad for me.In use my son found the Razor Raion very responsive to the quick move combinations that he is so proficient in. He said it made playing Streetfighter much more interesting as he was able to perfect his game even more than usual and slaughter his online opponents ... a very good thing apparently. Is it worth the price (£99.99 price correct at the time of this review) ... my son says "most definitely" and who am I (a player of mahjong) to argue.

I have been using the Razer Raion for a few days now, so I think I have a fair understanding of how good it is. So in my honest opinion I would say that the Razer Raion is a far better controller for fighting games than any I have ever tried before. The dpad is easily the best one I have ever used, nothing even comes to this level of response and accuracy. The guys over at Razer really did an amazing job!It seems the buttons are the only thing that I may have an issue with, as they are a bit too sensitive and I find myself pressing multiple buttons on accident if I’m not playing using the claw grip. This issue becomes nonexistent if you know claw grip.I am also glad that they didn’t leave out the touchpad button, because in a lot of fighting games it can be used to reset training mode. I would have been fine without the headphone jack, but its inclusion will still benefit other players. It is really expensive for a controller, but it's absolutely worth it for anyone that is into fighting games.

This is a hard one to review.First up, if you're buying this just as a standard PS4 controller then you need to consider carefully if this is for you.You cannot use this to play all your games, it is a very specific controller purely for beat em up and fighting games. The main reason for this is the lack of standard analogue sticks and the placement of the buttons. However, if you are after a controller designed purely for fighting games then this really is a thing of beauty. It has the traditional 6 button layout favored by arcade beat em ups and the buttons and D-pad itself really are a huge improvement over the standard controller and they really do make a difference. The one negative I would have is that this is a wired controller, not a bluetooth one. I guess that's probably because it improves the signal relay time but for the price I would have liked to be able to play with or without a wire

Gave this to my 18 year old son to test and here's what he has to say: ' Responds really well, didn't think it would make a lot of difference compared to an ordinary PS4 controller but the fightpad controller is a whole level up. Six big buttons help with speed and comfort, 8 way D pad for perfect control, played against friends with ordinary controllers and know I have the edge'. I asked him if he'll go back to using his old controller, didn't need to ask as its been put in a drawer. Overall excellent fightpad controller .

A superb pad to hold and once you get back into the saddle of the fighting games you realise this pad is such a close resemble to that of the Sega Mega Drive Pad in the 90’s. With its ability to switch about the shoulder button config with a switch on the bas of the pad itself you have full control over your fight. Proper Razer gear licensed by Sony. After you have a go on this you will realise that you can’t play your fighting games on a standard pad!

This is a PS4/PC compatible joy pad controller that is specifically tailored to be used for fighting games. I have a lot of 'retro' games on my PC and 2D fighters like 'King of Fighters' and 'Samurai Shodown' need a good pad or stick to be played well. I might not be the greatest of players, but I do enjoy these games. This pad is comfortable and doesn't give me hand cramps, even after lengthy game sessions. A great weapon to add to my gamer arsenal!

First, I will admit to having no expertise with fighting games. But my son has plenty so he was very keen to try this out. Based on his opinion, I can say that this is a high quality controller which definitely improves the standard of game playing. Do be aware that it isn't wireless, nor is it suitable for any other type of game. However, it does what it says it will and gives fight game fans a superior edge.

Really nice sleek design, feels great to hold, buttons also very rapid response and positioned well, in a good layout. This pad is proving ideal for me to up my fighting game standard (Street Fighter V primarily) and so well worth the money to me. The d-pad is my preferred input for fighting games and this one does not disappoint. I am very happy with it.

12.12.2019

The clue is in the name for this controller, unlike a standard controller this is built perfectly for fighting games only. If that's what you like to play this is for you. It's solidly built with a wired connection and responds really well to the slightest touch. It definitely helps with game performance. Another solid idea from razor.
