The Philips ClearVoice Digital Recorder is a compact little digital Dictaphone with simplicity and ease-of-use in mind, whilst providing a high quality and long lasting performance. The Dictaphone itself is constructed with a solid and durable shell, with a minimal amount of buttons cluttering up its exterior. At only 10.5cm in height. 4cm in width and a mere 1cm in depth - the Dictaphone is no bigger than many modern mobile phones and with its lightweight body, it's easy to slip in a pocket and carry around with you.Little to no reading up of any instructions is required in order for the user to become acquainted with the functionality of the device. Upon switching it on,it's quick and simple to start recording onto the in-built memory; pausing is just the press of a button, rewinding, fast-forwarding and deleting are all a doddle. The sound quality is clear and concise, cutting out the vast majority of unwanted background noise. This is extremely helpful if recording in a low voice on a noisy or busy train or room etc.The extremely impressive 277 hours of recording time is an incredible added bonus. Having four separate recording modes (or `tracks') to record upon, means that you can section off multiple recordings before uploading or deleting them. A few more of these available recording modes would have been a nicer feature to the Digital Dictaphone, but it's not the end of the world.Instant playback is an essential feature, and with this device it's incredibly fast and easy to do. This really is a user-friendly little gadget, making quick voice recordings as simple and fast as possible. Two non-rechargeable AAA batteries come included with the product. However, if you use rechargeable AAA batteries instead, once it's plugged into your PC or laptop, it automatically starts charging itself up again. When linked up to your PC / Laptop, the mp3 files can be quickly copied over and then emailed, achieved, duplicated or played around with. It's honestly as simple as that.A very brief `picture illustrated' instruction manual is included with the product, however, once it's plugged in using its short USB cable (also included) it links to an online instruction manual and associated software - all available in a vast array of languages. Once again, a nice little added touch. There are also two standard `female' sockets located at the head of the device for earphones and/or a microphone (neither of which are included) to be plugged in and used if you want to keep your voice recordings as private as possible. All in all this is a handy, high quality and well designed product which clearly has an everyday user in mind.

This is part of a range of similar devices that Philips make. This one is intended for recording sounds close to the microphone; i.e. you need to hold the device close to your mouth, so it is suitable for uses such as dictating a letter or capturing ideas. It will not pick up sounds from further away very well, which means that it cuts out most background noises, but you could not use this device to record a meeting or other discussion. I am surprised that some reviewers suggest it could be used to record college lectures, as my experience is that it would not do that very well if at all. Other devices in the range are suitable for different applications, so make sure you get the right one for the intended use.It is easy to use,and minimal reading of instructions is required to start recording. It is quite compact and lightweight, making it easy to carry around in a pocket. The recordings are stored as MP3 files and can either be played back on the device (built in speaker or earphones) or they can be transferred to a PC using a cable provided. You could then play them on the PC using a media player (the type you would use to play music downloads), you could sned them by email or you could archive them as you would any other PC file. You could also copy the files to an MP3 player or burn them to a CD, which might be useful if you are trying to learn a speech, presentation or a part in a play etc.The PC compatibility is one of the the main differences between this generation of recorders and the old tape-based ones. The other main difference is the battery life, which is much longer on these newer machines (no tape motor to drain the battery!).The sound quality is very good for voice recordings. I have not tried recording music or other sounds, but that is not the intended use of this item anyway.I actually think the unit looks quite good and it feels solid, as if it would be quite robust and last for a long time. However, it is not cheap, so I would suggest that you consider what you would actually use a voice recorder for. Many mobile phones and MP3 players have some voice recording capabilities, so you may already own something that will meet your needs.

The model seems to be pitched mid-market when I checked prices and models online and as such, I think it's a neat bit of kit. Simple to use though I have to say, if you've never used one before, the little eight-page foldout brochure that comes with the unit is pretty useless. To sum all the instructions with simple diagrams on three of these pages is just silly. Far better to download the twenty page User Manual from Philips website. You need only print out nine pages for the essential instructions.Actually, if you are thinking of buying one it might be useful to have a look at the User Manual because it'll give you a good idea about what the unit can do.Having read the instructions and played around a bit it's really quite easy to use and customise, too. I used it to record a talk given to twenty people, I was sitting in the front near the speaker and though I had to push up the volume on the playback using the internal speaker as soon as I plugged in headphones the sound was just fine.A clever control (which might be common to all manufacturers) is the Hold slider that locks the keypad. The controls could quite easily be activated accidentally when putting the unit in a pocket or bag. There are four digital folders available with each holding ninety-nine files and it's possible to put thirty-two Index points on each file. A couple of nice touches is the ability to make a loop of any chosen section and just keep repeating it at playback and it has a strap hole so it can be corded and hung round your neck and used hands free. The LFH0612 looks nothing special and I thought the molding gave a rather cheap appearance, especially the lettering and symbols indented in the plastic. Some of the symbols are difficult to see when stacked on the left-hand side of the 34.5mm screen. It is very light, at 55 grams and I think making it a bit heavier would give it more credibility. However, these comments really apply to the physical aspect and don't really impair the unit's usefulness.

The Philips LFH0612 Dictaphone is a nice little device - smaller (and much lighter) than a conventional mobile phone - so very mobile you can carry it in even quite small pockets - and works a treat. The version I got was a white model which looks stylish and would sit nicely along your ipod (not that I own one...)Depending on the quality of the recordings you make you can record up to 277 hours of recordings - obviously a lot less in High Definition mode! It uses "clear Voice technology" which does actually work - my recordings are a lot clearer than on my old device. Obviously an external better quality microphone (not included) will help but even with the in-built one the quality is great.Headphones are always a bonus for playback (again not included). And you can save straight into mp3 format making it easy to play on any of your mp3 devices. Copy these files straight onto your pc - drag-and-drop - via a usb lead (supplied). The instruction "manual" is minimalistic to say the least - just one piece of glossy paper printed on both sides with pictures rather than text (to enable it to be "multi-lingual" - I assume). Maybe I am a bit stupid but I didn't find all of these pictures very instructive and am a little unsure what some of them were trying to tell me. Give me a text document every time!I'm a little surprised/confused with the reviewer who says a rechargeable battery was supplied - mine was definitely supplied with a normal Philips Powerlife alkaline AAA battery (it specifically says "non rechargeable" on its side!).Anyway, as a quick summary - I like the look and feel of this device, it is easy to use and creates good quality sound files. Recommended.

The Dictaphone is a piece of kit that lives on even though times have changed. In the past if you needed to record your thoughts or practice a speech then a Dictaphone was the way to do it. If you needed one for work as a journalist or to record a sensitive conversation surreptitiously then again it was the only option.Times change though. My iPhone has a superb voice recorder and I carry it with me everywhere. All business Nokias have a voice recorder and I expect so do many consumer phones. If I need to record something I can. So why buy this product then? I suspect people viewing this review already know the answer. They need something light and quick that can record more than a couple of hours on a single battery charge. No menus on mobile phones just a click of a button in a pocket or on a desk. In this the Philips is excellent. It is super fast to start recording and it has a huge capacity. The AA battery is rechargeable and charges from the USB socket on your Laptop. It also has external MIC and EAR connectors using standard 3.5mm jacks to connect headphones or an external microphone. This alone elevates the recorder to the level of a professional tool.It is light, well made and simple to use. Recommended.

I got this as it's required for my uni course and it was the cheapest I could find. It came with 1AAA battery and a USB cable. The quality of the recording is amazing and it can be used to play back at quite a decent loudness. It's really easy to connect to the computer and download the recorded files. The quick start guide that comes with it is pointless as it doesn't explain anything but there is a link to the manual if you connect the product to the computer which explains everything really well. Overall, extremely happy with this purchase, I would recommend it to anyone. The only thing I can say is that I would prefer a silver colour instead of white.

This is a great little dictaphone, a lovely shiny white quality plastic. It even comes with a battery and short USB cable. The recorder is so easy you don't need to use the instructions, it's easy just turn it on and press the record button teh red light comes on when recording and then you can press the stop button to stop it - really simple. When you plug it into your pc the files just pop up and are easily listened to.Overall if you have use for a dictaphone this wouldn't be a bad choice! My 4 year old is recording hes songs on it and having loads of fun, I guess you might want to do something more serious like record you life story...

I originally requested this for my daughter who is at uni. I thought it would make taking notes at lectures much easier for her. However, I took it for a trial run to a trade show and used it at one of the seminars. On playing it back I was amazed at how much extra information I picked up that I had originally missed. It was also useful for other staff members who weren't at the show to be able to listen in to the lecture. It's a compact device and fits neatly into my handbag making it no trouble to transport around. I may just have to order another now to prevent any arguments over who gets to keep this neat piece of equipment.

I have another Philips digital recorder and I thought it was the best thing. Then I got this one and that's all changed now. The unit is light, only needs one AAA battery. The recording / playback quality is very good, even with the built in microphone and speaker. This device does comes with standard batteries which is a shame as the last one was rechargeable. However, with the rechargeable batteries from the old recorder, it works perfectly fine and tops up power from the USB cable. Build quality is good and also feels better designed for comfort and use.

As a student I found it better for me to record lectures so I could listen to them over again while reviewing my notes - let's be honest in a continuous 2 or 3 hour lecture you can miss important information regardless of how hard you concentrate.I used the old C-90 tape
