First off I want to say that this is my fourth or fifth Dictaphone Over the years. The first two I owned were decades ago and used micro-cassettes for recording and were bulky, inefficient and with limited playback life of recordings. Then these digital ones came and suddenly voice recordings became better quality, easily searchable and lasted forever.I really use these hard and are indispensable for my work. So when it was time for a new one, I did a lot of research before settling on this model. And its simply worth the initial extra expense. The one thing I have learned from years of use is that when it comes to Dictaphones, the disposable battery models are far far better than rechargeable ones.Because no matter how good the internal battery is, after a year or so of hard use, even the best battery life is reduced to less than half. And models like this where you just buy normal AAA cells from the market can easily last a decade or more if you use it normally. Besides, the alkaline batteries last several times longer than any rechargeable ones anyway. Disposable battery models are the way to go.And now to this particular model. Why did I choose it?First thing was the ease of connecting it just like a normal USB drive. My earlier one needed a cable and specialized Sony software to transfer files. This one just plugs in directly and reads off all the files in normal MP3 format. The audio quality is pure Sony. If there is one thing Sony knows, its audio. I've been using their audio products since the original Walkman days and they have gotten only better. The sound is crystal clear on both PCM and 192+kbps MP3 formats. The specially designed low cut filter really works and common Indian noises like overhead fans and distant traffic are cleaned out by the filter.Even though the included 4Gb internal memory is more than enough for almost every use (60 hours recording time at 128 kbps), I purchased a Samsung 32GB SDCard and it works perfectly. With this SDCard recording at 128 kbps I get almost 500 hours of recording time. All in all, this is a great product and if you are in the market for a dicatphone like device, this is the one I'd recommend most heartily.

Although this is a memo taker it actually reaches into other areas by virtue of it's stereo capability and CD resolution recording setting. It can be used for recording music and has some useful settings to accomplish this. It's not quite up to studio quality and the built in microphones are a basic but decent quality,I have been using it with a Roland CS-10EM binaural headset to record my audio experiences when I'm out and about and the results are uncannily good! The headset works perfectly with the Sony recorder (as will any external microphone requiring plug-in power) and the recording quality is excellent, clean and low noise. Plenty of dynamic range available for most situations. For use out and about it is extremely convenient as it its about half the size of an old (non smart) mobile phone and the batteries last for more than enough time for a days roaming around. It transfers to PC easily enough with the built in USB connector. However, this arrangement does seem a bit vulnerable to being knocked out of place and I worry it might break! I think I would have preferred a socket and cable arrangement. It can take Micro SD cards but will store more than 5 hours of high quality WAV recording using the on board 4Gb memory so this device comes pre-loaded with a usable amount of memory. It does also record in MP3 format in which case you can store over 39 hours at 192kbps.The only possible negative is the display which has tiny text and can be difficult to read at times. But once you've got it set up the controls are easy so shouldn't present a problem.Altogether a very neat, high quality device.

I have just purchased a used Sony ICD-PX470 (to replace an older, damaged model) and I have found it of equal quality and easier to use and it is lighter. The menu system is much easier to use, thankyou Sony! The start-up and close times are much shorter being only a couple of seconds, with the recorder responding quickly to the power switch: my old recorder took about ten seconds to start up. Having in-built stereo microphones is very handy, and you can always select mono by either using a mono microphone or choosing 48 kps mp3 recording format. I have not fully tested it yet, but the batteries seem to be lasting longer. The full-sized USB plug is very useful, but I recommend you use a USB extension lead to connect to your computer. Sony don't provide one, but you can choose the length you need! No, you can't recharge rechargeable batteries through the USB, but I have been using a separate battery charger unit for years, and changing the batteries is easy. All in all, it does exactly what Sony say it will. Excellent value for money.

It is a perfect buy for a general purpose of voice recording. I can only recommend it as it is easy to use and the recordings under ideal conditions are optimum.Earlier I had a Philips voice tracer which is more costly and only additional functionality is of rechargeable batteries.Yes this Sony recorder has only replaceable batteries. But it is not not a big handicap for even a heavy user if you got rechargeable batteries and their charger separately. You can connect it to your laptop just directly like any pen drive and can check your recorded files. The audio quality is good under normal conditions and serve the purpose very well by filtering out the normal surrounding noises. The internal memory of 4 GB is quite sufficient as one can transfer files to laptop. For heavy users the memory is expandable to 32 GB.The only drawback seems to be of the cheap plastic body, as at this price something more sturdy could be expected.Overall it is a reasonable buy.

At time of purchase Sony weren't clear, non committal, on their website whether whether this product was compatible with the CURRENT Mac OS Catalina. So i took a chance. I had bought this for my young son. Not sure whether, on first trial, we could get this to work with my son's Mac, this left me in a difficult position . Did I need to return the product? Or persevere? I contacted Sony about compatibility, they were hopelessly vague. I contacted the seller, who could only advise what Sony advised. Or didn't. Thankfully on third trial, we were able to hook the product up with my son's Mac with no compatibility issues. Success-and bow works great! Not a fault of the seller but Sony's lack of current product information on this product has been found wanting. Only 2/10 to Sony for causing so much uncertainty here

The first time I tried this I thought the recording was OK. Then I read the instructions and tried again and realised it's actually very good.My main disappointment was that a massive multinational like Sony made no effort to accommodate users of other operating systems than Microsoft windows. At this price I hoped for some voice to text software at least, but the only software they supply is uniquely Microsoft compatible and as I am a Linux user that's of no use to me, not even working with Wine. It's a bit discouraging using it for interviews if you're going to have to spend many hours typing them up.

I've used this for recording meetings, recording organ music in church, recording hymns for online services, recording birdsong in the field - all sorts of things. It hasn't let me down yet - just choose the right recording and playback settings and it will do its job. Battery life is really good, provided earphones are used. The only thing I would have liked was to be able to wind back, but the track mark system helps a great deal and a wind-back system would have sent the price up. I love this little machine.

I was guided through the setup by the device and it took only a minute or so to get started.Very simple interface, easy to control recording and chose between built-in and flash storage.Absolutely no issues connecting to my laptop. The included software is nice and clear to use. I have the ability to move and alter my recordings to my liking. There is a custom install to help me chose the install drive.Nothing flashy, just uncomplicated, robust and small enough for my pockets.Price was a bargain, too.

Its feature packed Dictation machine, one of the best voice recorders. You can record, divide, delete, mark, repeat sequence of Wav or a mp3 file. The mic quality is excellent for recording lectures, meetings, interviews. The loud speaker is excellent for quickly reviewing your recorded voice. But it comes with few compromises they are 1) No Backlit, operating it in dark environment not possible 2) You cant charge rechargeable batteries via Usb 3) its bit bulky.

So the Sony is more expensive (and less 'cute') than the Amazon recommended option - but the 'cute' Amazon recommended option I bought only lasted about three weeks (less than 10 hours total recording time) and I sent it back and got a refund. So far so good with the Sony - feels robust, works well, good sound, decent sized screen, easy to use and the inbuilt USB is great. Only downside is that it uses standard AAA batteries not a rechargeable Li-ion.

I am so glad I ignored the negative reviews.Okay - the sound quality is a BIT below par, but - what do you expect? It's not supposed to be Audiophile or super Hi-Fi!I bought this as an MP3 player and with a 32Gb card it goes on and on and on. The battery life - AAA x 2 is also very impressive. For the price this is a great piece of kit!The voice recording is adequate and fit for purpose.

I bought two of these to record interviews for my PhD research. At first I was looking at all kinds of fancy ones that were £200+. I’m glad I chose these as they do the job I need. I have had 12 of my audio recordings returned from the transcriber and the sound has been listed as ‘great’. In other words the transcriber could hear the interview clearly.

I only wanted this device for personal note taking rather than playing music. I am not therefor a discerning used. However, I liked the small size and the ease of use. My only niggle is that the instructions even on the web were minute. It would be nice to be able to download an A4 manual. Otherwise, it met my simple requirements perfectly.

I bought this to record conversations in a foreign language so I can then play them back as study aids. I wanted to be able to record a conversation, send an MP3 file to my laptop and then transfer the file as a podcast to my iPod so i could listen to it. I found all this worked just as I hoped so I am really please with this purchase.

Love this little recorder. Great for recording our band practices as it has a line in (connected to our mixer) Not lots of features but a soild performer! Also it doesn’t distort when recording through the built in mic as it has various modes which prevent that from happening. The batts last a while too!
