Very small and neat verbal note-taker. It will, perhaps, not address the requirements of a professional - for example, there is no practical offload of recordings other than via the headphone socket, in real time. Sound quality at HQ is very good (SHQ seems no better to me, SP is OK and LP seem a bit coarse). Microphone sensitivity (selectable high/low) seems fine. For making those quick observations and giving oneself a reminder, or indeed for budding novelists and poets caught on the hop by their muse, this is a neat and economical little device.Review having used for three weeks: Brilliant little personal note-taker. Remarkably easy to use in the dark.Easy to use when stop-start transcribing notes (and easy to control the speed of speech with pitch adjusted too). Battery life seems pretty good but 45 hours on a pair of AA's is a bit optimistic maybe. Had one software glitch after a session of dividing (easy) and erasing (very easy) portions of notes. Fixed that with 'FORMAT' to clean everything out. Not so good in high winds - but what is? I reiterate; for a small, personal, indoor device it is excellent... and excellent value for money. Now, after serious usage - excellent little device and perfect for ad hoc notes in daylight and (very tactile controls and beeps) at night. The '45 hours' refers to a solid block of recording in HQ mode and no playback. Who does that? About 12-13 hours of general record/playback is about right. Well pleased customer.

I bought this as a simple and low cost recorder to use in the car and it's great. Small and neat it has a nice feel and the shaped back makes one handed use easy. All the core functionality is intuitive to use, recording, playback and delete can be done with minimal button pressing and the LED that changes colour for different states makes it easy to use when you don't want to read the screen (there is also a beep that has different tones for functions). Screen display is well set out with core information clear and obvious. There is plenty of additional functionality and fine tuning that you can do via the menu structure, but out of the box it records flawlessly, the vox operation is surprisingly good and differentiates between my voice and road noise with no problem. As an entry level product it's a useful tool.If you need USB etc, then buy something more appropriate !

I have the earlier but identical looking model ICD BX112.....if you want to use your recordings outside the recorder you simply buy a lead to attach the recorder headphones jack to your laptop......it does mean you have to transfer it to a sound editing program on your PC and save it as an MP3 - a opposed to simply 'dragging and dropping' an MP3....so its a bit more 'work' than a more expensive model.... but people reviewing here seem to have little 'technical know how' or willingness to do this....but I've made hundreds of radio industry recordings and 'voice overs' using it to a very good standard for the price.....its not an ideal replacement for 'a studio'but it records to a very decent standard for the price and now I need a second recorder for a colleague i'm wondering if any other Sony recorder of greater value will give an appreciably better result???

A very nice little device. Most of the features are available via the Menu button, and you can see a better description of them on the web site at http://helpguide.sony.net/icd/b14/v1/en/contents/TP0000340812.html.I use mine mainly to record observations while observing the night sky with a backyard telescope and I found the device is easy to use in the dark once you're familiar with the button locations. The only thing that's missing is the ability to transfer the sound files to a PC. Other than that it has a lot of features for the price and is easy to use so I'd recommend it.

It’s pure class, it’s tiny, the recordings are very clear, it’s user friendly, battery life is crazy good, yes we know we can get this on our smartphone but come on, the real thing is so much better, for £30 you cannot argue , I recorded my wife snoring as she said she doesn’t ha ha, she wasn’t happy, it auto records when it picks up sound and if unused it switches off, highly recommended, may even just talk into it about my day , who knows it could be a novel in the making

It's a great little device, which does everything that I need it to do - I bought it to record details of walks to transcribe to the computer for future reference. Two negative points though:1) it's thirsty - I'm having to replace the batteries every week2) The recordings can't be transferred to the computer for archiving. Yes, I know it could be done via the headphone jack, but it would be nice to save the original recordings. But at the price, I can't complain

Brought this for college when doing interviews for projects. Feels really lightweight which I wasn’t sure about but surprisingly great quality esp for the price! Holds a lot of recording time and very easy to use! Volume and sound is brilliant. Brought an additional microphone but prob didn’t need it ss the in built microphone is very clear! Just make sure volume is turned up.

An elderly neighbour, well into his 80's, asked me to order this and I've only just got a result from him re its performance. Wow, he is so delighted with it. Reason he wanted it? Well he keeps getting into trouble with his elderly wife for forgetting things, so now he records it all and has told me that it is 'the bees knees'. He would definitely recommend it to anybody.

Good for what is, the sound recording quaility is good and the microphone makes it easier to capture voice. Also it is very simple to use even a class of 4 to 5 year olds could use it.However, there is no method for transfering the audio files to a computer, which is something I automatically expected.

A very neat little device ( smaller than expected ) , and a good buy for those needing something for occasional use. Suggest the use of headphones , playback much clearer. Have also bought a microphone to record the odd conversation. I prefer this device as it is Not Rechargeable ! Recommend.

I have used this recorder many times to records business meetings. It is totally reliable with clear recordings. As a result, my reports are detailed, accurate and well received. I strongly recommend it for recording meetings when it is important to get all the details discussed and agreed to.

Bought for a specific purpose in an employment issue and it’s value was massive ( overt use) Sound quality good. As only needed for two occasions opted for this but would go digital for downloading purposes for consistent or regular use although was easy to download recording using IT.

Delighted with the quality and ease of use of this. I had purchased a cheaper device on Amazon and was no impressed so stumped up the extra £10 for this. Set up in two minutes and clear simple instructions.Yet to test it out for minutes but satisfied with the quality of sound so far.
