I purchased this bag back in November, but wanted to get a few months of use in before I reviewed it. I want to start by saying that I am 5'6", and have an athletic build with wide-ish hips. I travel every weekend for work, so I needed something extremely convenient and reliable. After weeks of research, I finally settled on this Osprey pack. Unfortunately, it hasn't been as convenient as I was hoping, however, that fact is more personal and less product. That being said, here are my pros and cons:CONS:-- There are 2 mesh pockets on the front, which would be great to carry a water bottle (or anything really) in. But when the bag is packed, there's no way anything will fit in them unless it's a credit card or another item that thin.-- Each time I take the pack off or on, the right strap (above the shoulders) slides down, so I have to continually readjust it. Even when tightened all the way, they don't fit snuggly against me. They don't seem to get tight enough for my average-shaped shoulders.-- When I tighten the pack on my hips/waist using the waist straps, it causes the shoulder straps to loosen a bit, so the pack continually bounces around on my shoulders. It may be an issue with the fitting, but I've tried a variety of adjustments, and even had others adjust it for me, and it still bounces. It bounces no matter what.-- This bag naturally curves, so when you attempt to put a laptop/notebook/book in the laptop pocket, it's really difficult. My books always come out with a new curve to them, so I don't trust it to protect my laptop thoroughly.PROS-- 4 ways to carry it (by the top with a handle, on the side with a handle, as a backpack, or by a shoulder strap)-- Depending on how full the pack is, it will fit under the airplane seat (when this happened, I had 2 days worth of clothing + cosmetics -- no shoes).-- Slides easily into the overhead compartment in the airplane, with no struggle, even if packed overfull.-- Because it opens fully like a suitcase, it's very easy to pack and remove items from.-- There are tightening straps both on the inside and on the outside. They are very well made and of high quality, so I never feel bad about pulling on them, and/or shoving multiple things under them.-- I have fit a total of 5 days worth of clothing in here (2 work shirts, 2 pairs of jeans, pajama bottoms and a top, a pair of tennis shoes, 2 extra shirts, 2 sweatshirts, socks, undies, and cosmetics). I'm continually impressed with how much can fit in here!-- Great quality, doesn't feel cheap in any way, shape, or form. All in all, I would definitely recommend this bag for frequent travel. After traveling consistently for 4 months, I've decided that a rolling suitcase would be more convenient for me. However, I will absolutely still be using this bag for smaller trips, and my shorter hiking trips.

I am a 5'3" woman who travels a lot and likes to travel light. I was looking for a carry-on sized backpack that was comfortable to carry, easy to pack/unpack, and small enough to fit easily in overhead bins. After a lot of research, I decided that Osprey was the way to go. I tried the following Osprey bags:1) Osprey Packs Porter 46 Travel Backpack, Mineral Teal, One Size2) Osprey Packs Farpoint 40 Travel Backpack, Volcanic Grey, Small/Medium3) Osprey Packs Fairview 40 Travel Backpack, Rainforest Green, Small/MediumI initially bought the Porter and the Farpoint to do a side-by-side comparison, because they were priced comparably on Amazon (~$135 for each). To test, I loaded each one with a "full load" of mixed items, books, clothing, etc. I then donned the backpacks, adjusted the straps, and proceeded to walk around my bedroom a few turns.I was able to eliminate the Porter as a contender pretty quickly by doing this test. I found that the Porter did not have the internal support for significant weight. When fully loaded, the plastic backboard "buckled" and pressed against my lower back in an uncomfortable way. So I returned in the Porter. One note is that I did like the internal design of the Porter better, but I just couldn't justify keeping it when it was so uncomfortable to carry.Around this time, the Fairview went on sale, and I was able to snag it for a mere $120 (~$40 cheaper than it is currently listed on Amazon). I purchased the Fairview and proceeded to perform the same load test to compare it to the Farpoint. This was a more difficult decision, as the Fairview and Farpoint are almost identical. But I found the Fairview adjusted a little easier to my small frame and the hip belt sat a little more comfortably. This mirrored what I had read in reviews, so eventually I decided to return the Farpoint and keep the Fairview.I've used it on a couple of weekend trips so far, and have really enjoyed it. It's lightweight and easy to carry, but also easy to access the internal compartments. I'll be taking it on a week-long trip to Turkey soon, where I will be using lots of public transport and getting on and off planes several times. I'm looking forward to putting this back through its paces and seeing how it handles a longer trip.

I got this backpack for a 2-week trip across Europe and have since returned home. Here are a few thoughts I have about this 40 size bag from actual user experience.Comfortable: I'm a smaller girl, about 5'4", hence the reason I got the 40 and not the 55. I had about 10kg+ stuffed into this bag, but it felt like maybe half that weight. Using both the waist and sternum straps significantly make carrying heavier loads much easier. I felt completely comfortable carrying this bag on long walks through airports and cities.Carry-on Friendly: I was able to carry this bag onto every plane, including the smaller airlines like Ryanair. The attached picture is from a Ryanair flight.I only checked this bag once because it was early AM and I didn't want to deal with it on the plane. I also cannot stress how much I love the back panel that hides the shoulder straps. It made putting the bag in overhead compartments much easier.Storage Capacity: For what it is, the 40 holds a lot of stuff. I made the mistake of over-packing (like I always do), and this bag still held all my junk. Clothes, flat iron, small shoes, toiletries, you name it. But I had very little room for any souvenirs or new clothes bought on this trip. I often felt regret that I didn't pick up the 55 bag instead. However, I honestly can't wait for my next trip when I can pack smarter. Consider what you will be packing and what you might be bringing back with you when you decide between bag sizes. I definitely think the 40 is sufficient for a longer backpacking trip if you pack smartly, just know you might be a little limited.Despite some small regret that I didn't get the 55 bag, I definitely love this Fairview 40. Bags like this are a great investment if you plan on backpacking anywhere, especially if those cities are known for cobblestones. It's perfect for smaller/shorter people, and it can hold a good bit of stuff while still being comfortable to wear for long durations. Just honestly consider your needs before settling on the size before you buy.

Loved using this backpack in Europe for a little over two weeks. We bought it (and the Osprey Farpoint 40 for my husband) to meet the requirements of the smaller intra-European airlines such as Alitalia and EasyJet. It was well within the restrictions, and they didn't give us any trouble at all! The internal and external compression straps are a great bonus if you're pushing the allowable dimensions. An added bonus of the compression straps is that, if you take care, the zippers can be hidden underneath the straps so you don't have to worry so much about pickpockets on packed trains and buses -- beware!I have always been an over-packer, but knowing I had size and weight restrictions led me to buy this pack.I was easily able to take what I needed for our 16-day trip with room left for a few souvenirs on the way back. Despite my inexperience in using a backpack, this was so much easier than rolling a suitcase over cobblestone streets and the pedestrian bridges (most with stairs) in Venice. The pack itself weighs so little that I was easily able to heft it into the overhead bins on the plane, unlike a suitcase. I am a petite woman at 5'1" and this pack was very comfortable on my frame. I'm a convert!

I use this for short and long trips. I packed it for 14 days traveling city to city in Ireland, and also for weekend trips. The way you can compress the items inside and outside (using straps) it is flexible for either. It is small enough to use as carry-on, but fits so much. There is a large back compartment that is one space (and has the compression straps). The second large section has a foam-mesh pocket to separate items into two areas. There is a small zippered pocket up top for smaller items you may need to access easily, and two mesh pockets on the front for bottles or small things. This version is made for women, so the straps are closer together. I am 5'6" and somewhat broad-shouldered and bought the M/L version. It is the right length for shoulder to hip, and very comfortable to carry a fully loaded back when I have the chest and hip belts secured.I previously have used the Osprey Porter 46 to backpack in Europe and it was very hard on my back (works fine for my 6'3" son). It also is more difficult to get the straps tucked in for checking the bag. This Fairpoint has a zip up flap to cover the straps, and to take it down you just roll it up and tuck it - takes just a few seconds.

Used this bag to travel South East Asia. Love love love it! It was the perfect size for me. Never got too heavy and many people asked me about it at various points along the way. I could bring it aboard some buses with me if it felt too dodgy to leave below. Found it so much easier to get around with this bag size. I also bought Amazon packing cubes which allowed me to maximise space (rolling things) and also accessing things easier. I used a long slim packing cube which fit along the bottom (towel/flip flops/sandals). And put 3 small cubes side by side across the middle. There was also room for another one along the top. It was perfect! The only downside is it doesn't come with a raincover,so I recommend buying a cover also, as it does tend to get quite dirty. But not essential!I checked the bag in for all flights but did see some other travellers using it as their carry on. Sometimes if it was really full it seemed quite deep, so didnt want to risk it. But I reckon it could be done especially if it was less packed. The outter straps really let you close it further and compress it down even further when closed ;)Looking forward to using it again when travel opens back up!!

Used this bag for a month-and-a-half long trip around Europe. Absolutely perfect! I had no problems using it as a carry on on any of the airlines I traveled with (American Airlines, Ryanair, Lufthansa), and it held everything I needed quite comfortably. Made my trip so much easier!1 YEAR UPDATE:Cannot stress enough how much I love this bag. I'm not an avid backpacker by any means, but I'm always going somewhere or doing something, and this bag has kept up with me marvelously. I've used it on month-and-a-half long trips to Europe, week long conferences for work, week long roadtrips in Colorado, long weekends at the lake, etc. It always seems to fit everything I need and is comfortable to wear, whether it's on my back as I wander around Venice all day or am rushing about the airport. I'm not gentle at all with it, and the only wear it shows after a year are some very minor scuff marks on the front (when it was handled roughly by the airport on the very first flight I took it on, funnily enough)! This bag has more than paid for itself in saving me bag checking fees, and I anticipate using it for years more.

I bought this recently for a long-haul trip and love (almost) everything. Sturdy, capacious, perfect cabin-size, comfortable, easy to pack and organise. Internal restraining straps in main compartment. Zippered pocket in 2nd compartment for gadgets. Small easy-access compartment for wallet or passport. Two mesh pockets for water bottle/ sunglasses etc. Shoulder straps quickly pack away under zip flap when needed. Detachable shoulder strap provided to use as a holdall. Strong, comfortable handgrip makes bag easy to lug off shelf. Waist strap is too short for me (I am plus-size), but I can order an extender from manufacturer. I love the colour too, with turquoise clips. Just one thing...going through airport security scanner on outward and return journeys, my bag was taken aside for further examination. Nothing found to be wrong. Made me wonder if there is something in the internal structure that sparks an alert. For me, this was a pricey option, purchased after returning a much cheaper unsatisfactory backpack from another manufacturer, but so worth the money.

While you pay a premium for Osprey products, you get a well-designed and high quality product. This backpack is what I would categorize as an "adventure" backpack in that it might be overkill if you're just using it for light travel from airplane to hotel room. This backpack was built to be carried around for example around the city or the backcountry and then loaded onto a train. With that description in mind, the backpack has a lot of the creature comforts that you'd want including: the ability hide your harness and hip belt, laptop sleeve, lockable zippers, compression straps, plenty of pockets including one they call a slash pocket which puts your most used items in a convenient location. But the best thing about the backpack is the LightWire internal frame, when the pack is full loaded, it really helps distribute the weight. Some people might not think the frame is doing anything but the pack has to be fully loaded and basically heavy. Overall, a great "adventure" backpack if you plan on walking a lot on your travels!

Decided at the grand age of 40 to do a 10 day multi city break and use a backpack. This backpack was brilliant.Note I am fat, old and unfit and I found this backpack to be comfy enough. It was pretty crammed as I'm used to suitcases and 4*+ all inclusive where I don't need to think about what I pack.On others advice I bought packing cubes, and whilst not necessary, did help keep items together. The main compartment opens like a suitcase. There are two additional areas for tablets, books, phones etc. Plus 2 side pockets for water bottles. The straps are comfy and once properly adjusted make carrying 10kg bearable.Used as carry on luggage on Jet2.My other half was miffed that the women's has a keyclip when the mens doesn't.Only thing that would make it better would to give different colour internal straps for ease of notice.Yes the colour is more olive green than grey but personally I liked it and thought it looked classy.Recommended you buy this bag.

This has by far been the best travel bag I have owned. My husband and I travel a lot and find the bags with wheels awkward especially if you are traveling abroad to places like India. Then it's even worse when you have a wheel break on your trip.We have used these on several trips including a 3 week trip around Egypt and Jordan where we were able to pack everything we needed into this one bag comfortably and use it as our carry on; making travel quick with no baggage claim on transfers. So far the seams and zippers are holding up well to the abuse of travel.I love the features like the exterior small pocket which fits the quart size Ziplock bag of liquids perfectly and makes for easy grab andstow at airport security.Having the cover to hide the shoulder and waist straps takes away the worry of catching and damage if you decide to check your bag.It can be heavy on the shoulders if you don't use the waist strap when carrying the pack for long periods of time.

This is a very interesting bag. It can be a fully functional hiking style backpack. Or, you can cover the backpack straps and use it as a carry on duffle bag type bag. There are plenty of pockets for a variety of items. The main pocket area is very suitcase style. The front pocket is padded for carrying a laptop or tablet . The back of the main pocket area is also padded, so you don't have sharp bits of things poking into your back when using it as a backpack. There is a detachable strap to use for carrying this bag over your shoulder, like a duffle bag. It comes off completely. It is very versatile. There are also multiple adjustments in the backpack straps so you can get them really comfortable to carry for long periods of time. There are no side pockets. Two front mesh pockets could be used for carrying water bottles, but they aren't quite elastic enough for me to fully trust them,. Very versatile, well made bag.

I bought this pack to upgrade my travel appearance, as my old pack, even though it was custom-made for me, made me look like I might be sleeping on the streets. The Osprey Women's Fairview 40 makes my travels in Africa so much easier. Appearances count. The pack looks sleek and polished. It fits like a dream and I appreciate how comfortable the pack is to wear even when it is fully loaded and heavy. The main compartment opens fully so that I can access my gear without tearing all my stuff apart. The other compartments take a bit of figuring out in terms of access, which, I imagine makes it harder for someone to slip something out of my pack. Once I learned which zippers open what compartment,I discovered even more thoughtful designs. I love the little touches and micro-adjustments. It took me a year of researching, hemming and hawing about getting a new pack. Glad I chose the Osprey Fairview 40 Women's Pack.

My husband and I each purchased an Osprey Pack (Fairview 40 for me, Farpoint 40 for him) for international trips. We've used the packs for trips ranging from 7 to 14 days. While we haven't had to do it, the backpack straps can be stowed in case you need to check the bags. The pack can hold a 15" laptop and a tablet, but the position of the electronics sleeve is away from your body, so the weight distribution is not ideal if you have to carry a laptop. The sternum and hip straps help tremendously if your pack gets too heavy. So far, my husband and I have been able to travel through diverse regions of Europe without issues with the packs. Two of the zippered compartments can be locked using an owner-supplied padlock or combination lock. The contrasting color interior makes it easy to find things in your pack. I would recommend using packing organizers for ease of stowing clothes and equipment.

Love, love, love it. Fit a lot more than I thought it would. The waist belt and compression straps made it so much easier to carry without feeling too heavy. The waist belt literally took the weight off my shoulders making it so much easier to travel. It fits carry on with every airline I've used, large and small planes, as well as trains. Great that there's a pocket to zip the straps into when you're taking it on a plane so they don't get caught on anything. Only drawbacks:1. The water bottle storage on the front is hard to reach when wearing the backpack and when the bag is full you can't fit a water bottle in it. It should be located on the side instead.2.The laptop sleeve is located in the front pocket instead of the back one causing it to fall forward when you take it off.3. Wish there were pockets on the straps so you could get more functionality out of it while wearing it.
