I’ll be honest with you; the last handheld I bought was a Gameboy Advance from back in 2000. The problem as I’ve grown older however is that the desire to update to a newer system has been dampened by owning ‘smart’ (portable) devices, which have just offered new gameplay experiences. That, and the different lifestyle I have now.So I was completely surprised to find out that one of my all-time favourite games was being re-released on what this klutz describes as a modern Gameboy. Pokemon Blue.My initial thought? “Okay, now there is NO excuse.”The Nintendo 2DS is, in itself, something a retro product, favouring toy-like qualities over high specs. There is no 3D experience that you’ll either love or hate - Nintendo surely all too aware that it has become a novelty. Gone is the clamshell design that disposes of ergonomics over long periods of play. The stylus is no longer retractable, and you’ll have to get used to a mono speaker again…But I am arguing that it is all the better for it - for some people at least.Let’s get the design out the way. This thing feels great! It is wider and slightly chunkier than a 3DS, but provides plenty of room to control the shoulder buttons and to spread all of your fingers out comfortably. The D-Pad and circular stick are perfectly positioned so that your right thumb doesn’t need to stretch awkwardly to use the A-B-X-Y controls. And how about them colours? Yes, they actually serve a purpose as you memorise them to each button. The casing is a transparent blue that recalls memories of Nintendo’s other see-through editions, from the N64 to various Gameboys. It’s a fun touch that gives the numerous LED indicators a bit more vibrancy, and is unique in that it can’t be purchased out of a game bundle deal. It looks so good that I’m tempted to purchase the Yellow edition for keepsake.Setting up the 2DS is straightforward and takes about 5 minutes, though additional features can be personalised after. If you’ve owned a Wii or Wii U, then the Home Screen will be very familiar with its row of square placeholders. Games and apps can be moved around however you like, into folders and even made larger/smaller, which is a neat touch.I’m genuinely surprised at how fluid this experience is, given the age of the hardware. If you think the ‘New 3DS’ will offer dramatic speed improvements, you may want to think again.Services such as Miiverse are not compulsory, but offer a decent way of communing with other gamers on chosen topics. You can opt to have free software download automatically and to receive news updates from Nintendo. Keep in mind that you can turn the Wi-Fi off in two clicks, so if you’re not going to use online functions often and want to save battery, it’s worth remembering. The two screens are absolutely fine and appear similar in contrast and colour to the 3DS. The touchscreen is responsive and accurate, though I would have liked a cleaning cloth to be included as it can get a bit mucky after periods.Obviously, the screen resolutions leave aren’t much to shot about today, but for the price and purpose it’s no big deal.My favourite aspect of the 2DS is the eShop, because it saves having to carry around game cartridges. Granted, retail games are cheaper in store, but the Virtual Console is great way to download classics from years gone by. I can now relive Super Mario Land all over again, and actually complete it this time!Content is saved to an SD card (included), which can be upgraded simply by copying the contents over on a PC.I also like the non-clamshell design, because not only does it feel surprisingly solid (certainly not cheap at all), but everything is laid out just right. I don’t see any benefit to having the clamshell as it doesn’t make the product that much easier to store away. The 2DS arrives in a very unique box that I’ll certainly be keeping hold of; and contains the console, a power supply (the 3DS doesn’t) stylus, Home Screen promo code (very nice!), cards and documentation. Pokemon Blue is preinstalled in three languages.I’m thrilled with this purchase. I was initially hesitant given that I didn’t want to spend more money on software - Nintendo has yet to offer an account system where games are purchased once for multiple devices - but I can appreciate its value in owning just three titles. I’m an adult, but the 2DS makes me feel like a big kid, and sometimes that’s just the medicine you need to switch off from work. Also, there is a guarantee with Nintendo products that you’ll have access to classic game series’ such as Mario Kart, Mario Party, 2D side-scrollers and more. None are flawless, but they serve as great downtime and shouldn’t be taken too seriously.I wholeheartedly recommend this product if mobile games just aren’t your thing. It’s fantastic for the price, and the inclusion of Pokemon Blue and a unique transparent blue 2DS makes it a no brainer.

I recently decided that, whilst I love my PS Vita, I needed a 3DS so that I could play the latest Nintendo titles (Luigi's Mansion 2 and Mario Kart 7 especially). When I discovered this alternative I was thrilled because I don't particularly care about 3D features, and the fact that New Super Mario Bros 2 comes installed had me sold. Now my Vita is a fantastic machine, but it cost £150 with 5 games and this 2DS bundle only cost £79... This isn't too far off being half the price. The graphics aren't amazing but the colours are so vibrant that I really couldn't care less, I think the system is capable of everything it was intended for.Originally I thought the cameras installed on the system werean unnecessary addition but upon discovering certain features I take that back - whilst not completely needed they do offer some amusement; it's quite fun shooting screaming family member's faces. One thing I really like about the 2DS is the sleep function - it's really simple but it makes up for inability to fold the console. I am going to have to deduct a star for the decision to include one speaker instead of two, though, as this means stereo sound is only available through headphones. Sounds like a minor issue until you find yourself playing Resident Evil with no clue where the creepy sounds are coming from.Another gripe with the system is that, as expected with Nintendo, all of the best games are extremely pricey. I find myself wanting to play the Zelda remakes, but the standard prices are ridiculous. All in all it's a great buy, like other systems it has shortcomings but I think they are easily avoidable when they become an issue. The build quality feels pretty great - it's quite toy-like but it could definitely withstand bigger impacts than the 3DS. I've heard complaints that the 2DS is 'ugly' but I find myself disagreeing. It looks unusual, yes, but not ugly at all.Overall I think this was a fantastic buy, just a shame I can only afford a limited amount of titles for it. Purchasing this item has actually turned me onto the idea of getting a Wii U in future as well.

This was a gift for my son, he previously had a standard DS which we have all been using for years but lately it had stopped recognising more and more game cards until it finally expired so a new one was very much in demand. We looked first at the 3DS but when we used a friends one we found it gave eye strain and headaches for even moderate use. My son therefore plumped for the 2DS and i have been delighted with what we received. The pictures online from various sources of the 2DS don't do it credit., this isn't clunky or a tablet like slab, it's remarkably well thought out. The shape is easy to hold and weight is well distributed. You can hold it for long periods with no discomfort. The button layout and weight will be familiar to anyone that's used a DS before and the usual volume and speaker quality gives you the now familiar Nintendo soundtrack nicely with a headphone jack for those who want to use it while travelling or in busy areas. The joystick is surprisingly responsive having been taken directly from the 3DS and both screens are really clear. If anything i think the sensitivity of the touch screen has had a massive upgrade since the earlier DS models, its can now pick out much more accurately small objects with the new stylus which is parked in the back of the case as usual. Battery life has proved to be really good too, much better than the old one although that could just be due to the old unit having been charged many times. The real bonus and selling point came in the form of not only getting a built in game for my £75 purchase price, but also the ability the console has to accept old DS games as well as 3DS titles played in the 2D mode (on the 3DS there is a slider to adjust eh 3D effect, it's like playing the game with the slider in the lowest position) which makes the available library of games very impressive. Since the DS games are not expensive it goes towards getting great value, especially for my little lad. Its such a good buy and so versatile i might even buy one for myself for my train commute!

This limited edition 2ds console is absolutely stunning as well as being the best value for money bundle of the entire range. For one, it's nearly half the price of the other ends consoles including the new 3ds and old. I'm not going to disagree that they are superior and also well worth the money, but this plays all the 3ds games, with all the same features minus the 3d effect (which I personally never use). The 2ds console doesn't have the clamshell design which gives it the feel of the older generations of gameboy. This in fact makes the console much more comfortable to hold and less cramp in fingers (for a grown man like myself perhaps)although I have small hands. The game itself isn't going to impress newcomers to gaming or the pokemon franchise as graphics and gameplay have improved leaps and bounds over the past 20 years, however it's great to finally be able to access the original games without having to use an old gameboy.I personally bought this for nostalgia, being around 10 when I originally got the game with a gameboy, and I loved the box design making it feel like I was 10 again receiving a brand new pokemon red product. For £80 you receive a limited edition (stunning) console, a pre installed version of the game and a the added bonus of a charger, which although only costs £6.99, is a bit of a gripe when you pay £180 for the new 3ds and do not get one.Have clocked up around 12 hours on the game so far in a short few days, and I'm surprised at how ahead of its time the gameplay really was.

Keep in mind that this Console is designed for children. But do not let that fool you! Adults can have this too! I'm 22 and I bought this for many reasons. One, I'm a Game-Console collector. Two, I love the colour pink. Three, I loved this new tablet-like design. Now for those of you that don't know, this Console is basically a 3DS with some things removed...For starter, the 3D effect has been removed. The clam-shell has been removed and so has the built-in Amiibo functionality. This Console was designed for children or for people who do not have, or want to spend, alot of money. That being said, that's why things were removed, to make it cheaper and more child-friendly.Now I know what you're thinking...They made a great Console into something small, pathetic and well... Crappy. WRONG!This Console still offers that super speedy loading times for games and/or applications. Including the internet. The design is flawless and the picture quality and colours are spot on! The sound is perfect too. It's so easy to use and play games on!Yes this is a very unique Console from Nintendo, but they certainly went all out with this one! Do not think bad of this just because of the new design, price or features! This Console actually beats most 3DS's in my opinion.Get a Carry-Case and a Hard-Protector Case and you're good to go! As-long as you look after the 2DS, it'll always be in that Brand-New condition! Xxx

Probably the best console iv bought in my lifetime. The game library is insane you can play DS and 3DS games (without cinema style 3d). Theres a lack of shooters on 3DS but worth buying Goldeneye, Call of Duty black ops, Metroid Prime Hunters and GTA Chinatown wars on DS. Bought it for Resident evil resurrections 3ds which is amazing. Also has remakes of Zelda N64 games and others plus usual suspects; mario, mario kart, monster hunter, pokemon, street fighter etc. Also has a decent sega library - sonicx5, altered beast, shinobi (remake). Plus an ok playstation one with worms open warfare 2 (ds), resident evil resurrections (3ds), tekken (3ds). It comes with a memory card/stick (4gb) and charger, plus a decent mario game built in. The 3DS XL has one analog stick extra but you dont get a charger or memory card. Only difference with games is no cinema style 3d on the 3ds games. Screen resolution is the same on both devices so 2ds picture is better too and 3ds is distorted. I was on the fence between 2ds and 3ds xl. This is miles better, every game has several options for control - motion, touch screen or control pad so you really can just choose the best for you. Recommended like nothing else before!

I haven't owned a Nintendo since the original DS when it first came out, and when I saw this for £75, I decided to get it, since it comes with a game as well, and I travel a lot, so I could use this when travelling. It arrived very quickly, and was brand new, not damaged in the post or anything. The console itself is great. The design is very simple, but is very comfortable and it's very balanced, unlike the clamshell design of the 3DS. It comes with a 4GB memory card, with mario kart 7 pre-installed, which is nice, since you don't have to download it using a code, you just turn it on, set the console up, and then you're ready to play. The graphics are decent, not amazing, but given the size of the screens you can't fault it. It has a decent battery life, and you can put it in sleep mode which is very useful, as the device still does stuff like streetpass while in sleep mode. Overall, this is a great console and if you want something to pass the time while travelling or just want a cheap handheld console, this is the way to go.

I purchased my 2DS on the 22nd and have spent the past few days fiddling with it - an early present to myself.I have owned both the New 3DS and this, and I'm starting to think I personally prefer the 2DS. The New 3DS is quite clearly much more portable, although the 2DS will fit into my hoodie pouch just fine. There are a few things I have noticed. The buttons on the console are less tactile than those of my old 3DS and at first it was quite irritating, but actually they are the same as those of the older DS consoles - a part of what helps makes this such a great value console. The colorsheme of white and red is also quite nice. Finally, the 3D cameras are not pointless, some games are dependant on the 3D camera, even if you can't view the images in 3D.It's a cracking piece of kit with mediocre battery life - but has the same functionality as the more expensive 3DS besides the 3D. However, if you purchase a 3DS, chances are you'll forget about the 3D after a few days, but a cool gimmick nontheless.Recommended.

Can't go wrong with this one. Perfect to play all the fabulous Nintendo games (Super Mario, Pokemon, Fire Emblem Fates, etc.)!Fits my (relatively big) hands beautifully. Even long hours of gaming feel comfortable. The screens are decent (don't expect HD - they are not iPhone screens, OK). Battery lasts long enough 7-8 hours. Sturdy, good quality material. I play on the train, bus, underground, airplane, at home... just throw it into your bag. It lasts forever. No scratches Good stuff.Got this one here on Amazon with Super Mario Bros 2 installed. Absolute Bargain!!What I like the most about this one is the sheer relaxation factor. I hate to use my mobile for gaming - always get bombarded with messages, work emails, etc. This one is just for fun and relaxation.if you are considering getting this one, just order it... you won't regret it! It will make your life happier, trust me :-).

Got this from the official UK Nintendo store and it came with a free case which is really good as it protects it from scratches and dust also it has 3 slots to put your games in which is good for taking with you if you have 3/4 favourite games. The buttons are a bit iffy to be honest but still worth the buy considering it is £80, battery life is considerably better than the 3ds/xl by not having a 3D feature, the battery life lasts around 2-3 hours depending on usage and also takes around 3/3.5 hours to charge(if dead). One good thing is you get a free 4gb SD card which the Pokemon game comes on pre installed which you could sell that SD card in the future for a good price,I also believe as its a limited edition as the transparent limited edition game boy advance as they're going for £80/£90 so I believe this will be worth some money in a few years time.

Another fantastic product from Nintendo. The world of handheld gaming has vastly changed in the last decade. Smart phones can do everything and more than these games consoles can do but lack any playability, it's difficult to be immersed with a story if Sandra from the office is asking if you'll work on Saturday.I mainly bought the 2ds for the classic titles that have been re-released, so I could relive my childhood favourites. It plays them flawlessly and keeps the magic alive for me.Solid design with streamlined interface. A few to many applications on the front screen for me, I guess these would be good to use if you had friends with the same bits.If you're comparing this to the 3ds,this is cheaper but doesn't use a c-pad, it's flat, doesn't fold, feels more solid and doesn't play 3ds games in 3D. It does still play 3ds games.

Great for the young ones and a perfect alternative to those who don't like 3d but wish to still wish to have a console that can play all the games. These consoles fit any ds game. We brought this at the request of our 11yo daughter because she didn't like her 3d mode on her 3ds and had also broke the hinge.. this works perfect as a replacement because it allows her to play the games she already has. Its not to big and feels really sturdy. Our family of 4 children have broken many versions of the ds over the years i wish they were all built like this as they are still portable but less risk of breaking those delicate hinges. We are now looking at getting one for our youngest who is 4 this Christmas. This version has the listed game built in and does not come separate (other games and colours of this are also available)

Perfect for children who are too young to be staring at the 3D function on a 3DS (or too clumsy to be trusted with the clamshell design of the other models). The fact that this comes with Mario Kart 7, one of the best games available on the system, is brilliant.I won't bother going into any other details about the system itself, as there are probably a million reviews on the web where you can read every single detail. Suffice to say this is a kid-friendly version of probably the best hand held console ever made. Two bits of advice if you are buying it for a child, mind you: get screen protectors, and get a spare stylus (or two). One general piece of advice: get a bigger SD card. The 2gb one supplied doesn't go very far if you want to download games and demos and fill it with photos and whatnot.

This is the second one I have purchased, that is how great these are. I bought one for my son, as we had an older version which kept being temperamental and of course the new one was the favourite and it meant arguments about who was going to play it, so we bit the bullet and got a second so they could have one each. This is a great little device and handy to throw in my bag to bring out for the kids to play on when we are out and about and need them to sit still for a little while. They love the mario game and that's all they play on it. My 5 and 6 year old have no problem playing these and I suspect they are probably better than me on them. Great device, holds lot's of charge and a god send at times!

I bought this for myself as I am a big child. I have not played pokemon since silver and at that time I was 11 I have been wanting a DS for some time and this didnt break the bank so the two together I thought why not. From the little sprite of a character you controlled in silver I was amazed at the 3D graphics and what it has become. The core gaming is still there which is great. Only one issue is what the hell are these pokemon aint got a clue what half of them are. One looks like an ice cream. The DS has got a good battery life and I like the sleep mode. You slide the switch to put it to sleep and the same again and you are right where you left off in the game without having to load thegame again.
