Admittedly the PS2 is now getting on in years however this shouldn't put anyone looking for a console off. The PS3 is still part of the rumour factory with no one even knowing what it looks like never mind when it will be released. Sony do have a good record of making their new consoles backwards compatible (ie the PS2 played almost the entire catalogue of PS1 games meaning anyone who upgraded from 1 to 2 could still play their old games. In fact in many cases the PS2 improved the graphics and load speed of the old games) however there is no guarantee that this will happen with the PS3. The PS2 has by far the largest selection of great games available and many times the customer base of theother consoles meaning games manufacturers will continue to produce games for this unit for many years. The PS2 outsold the X Box on the X Box day of launch and has continued to out sell it day on day since. This alone should be a great indicator of the quality and breadth of games available. The old unit did have disc read problems, presumeably from dust on the inaccessible lens, (I myself went through 2 in 4 years) however the new slim line unit should cure that as the lens is is easily got to for cleaning if required.A word of warning though, DVD region free DVDs will not work on this unit due to the electronically operated door being replaced by an old stlye CD flip door operated by pushing a release catch. This means the unit knows it's been opened when you try and put your region 1 DVD in and won't play along. There are, as always, ways around this however you should be aware further equipment purchases would be required. The cost of DVD players available make this a false economy (Check the Sony region free player available from amazon that I also reviewed.)just buy this for the games and think of DVD play back as a bonus. In short (about time, I know) the sheer enjoyment obtained from this unit for so little outlay makes it an essential purchase. Even if you own other consoles, are waiting for the next generation of consoles to be released or your old unit has given up the ghost you will get many times your moneys worth in enjoyment from purchasing the slim line model. Some of the games alone are worth the purchase price. My own humble recomendations are GTA San Andreas and Call of Duty.Despite its diminutive size the new model also has the ethernet connection built in. This is what is required to play the many on line compatible games actually on line. To purchase this for the old one is £40 making the slim line great value on many levels from casual gamers to those who want to take it on line. Be aware that a minimum of 512kps broadband is required for this though.Sorry for the length of this review but I would hate folk to miss out on years of great gaming experience for the sake of a bit of doubt and less than £100.If your looking for a console make it this one.Hope this helps. (No, I don't work for Sony, really just love the machine that much!)

Playing the ps2 feels a bit like a step back in time as the visuals and the audio are not up to the standards of the other consoles. I bought it to play San Andreas without having to wait years for the Xbox port - its loads of fun but the console can't keep up with the scenery streaming from the DVD.This new, smaller version doesn't seem to have any major hardware improvements, apart from the built in networking capability, it's pretty much business as usual. But it's so small and cute! Seriously, it really is small! I took it out of the box and thought 'whoa'; pictures really don't do it justice! So anyway, if you haven't got a PS2 yet, first of all, what's wrong with you? You don't have a PS2?!But if you don't, then this is a great time to get one! On the other hand, if like me, your old PS2 is on its last legs, don't give up! Get this new version and marvel at its size, and how shiny and cute it is! :)Great new look and is unbelievably light. All console lovers will be after this. A must buy for all of you!!!There are still some pretty amazing games around or soon to be released. Look at GTA: San Andreas, Gran Turismo 4 or Kill Zone! All great games!Upon opening the box my first impression was something along the lines of, 'Is this it?!' I knew it was suppose to be small but photographs do not do it justice. The automatic DVD drive mechanism from the larger PS2 model has been replaced with a PSOne style lid which lifts up to reveal where any disc would go, meaning it is very easy to get to the laser lens. This will hopefully prevent the common problem of disc read errors with the large models, as any dust built up inside can now be easily removed. Another difference from the larger model is that the power cord now has to be plugged into a supplied adaptor (much like the kind found on laptop computers) before it can be plugged into the mains. I'm assuming that it was not included in the PS2 unit itself to save space. The final difference is that this smaller model is DVD+RW/-RW compatible, meaning home burn DVDs are playable in full colour. The promise of the system being 75% quieter has also been kept as I only occasionally notice a slight buzzing sound as I'm using the system. This model also includes an ethernet netword port, two USB ports and a built in infra-red detector for use with a DVD remote control.Overall, a great games console made even greater.

I got my PS2 late in its lifespan, and decided to buy it instead of an Xbox 360. In fact, I got the PS2, a memory card and 7 games and still spent £100 less than I would have done if I'd bought the X360 on its own!So what convinced me to buy the aged console (aside from the price) when there are more technologically advanced options available? It boils down to the games. No, the graphics are not as good as on the newer consoles (but still quite impressive), but that doesn't matter. Late in its lifespan we are finally seeing some real AAA titles for the console, and with lots more to come well into 2007. Add to that an already well established library of games, and there is something for everyone to enjoy, from family friendly party games to more adult-orientated action games. As everyone knows its also plays DVDs and CDs, which saves a lot of space as I no longer have to have a separate DVD player. The slimline PS2 is incredibly tiny, but it still does everything its bulkier predeccessor does (and it even includes a network card for online play, but I have never used this feature). Because of its size it fits quite well next to my TV and is not too intrusive. Aesthetically, you cannot fault it. It is also extremely quiet as there is no fan buzzing away, but mine has never overheated even after having it turned on for prolonged periods of time. Another bonus of the redesign is that discs are no longer tray loading, and so the lens is easier to clean, and you also don't have to worry about it coming dislodged, or the tray itself breaking. The slimline PS2 is cheap but cheerful and has many great games available, so rather than procrastinating over whether or not to buy an X360, buy a PS2 instead!

Sony have sold over 120,000,000 PS2 consoles and it continues to out-sell the PS3 in all territories across the world. The reason for this is very simple. It has a huge library of games covering all genres. Many of its games offer unique gameplay experiences such as the stealth play in the Metal Gear Solid series. The fact that the console is now so cheap to buy also helps sales. The PS2 offers something for everyone. Football fans have the Fifa and Pro Evolution Soccer series. Beat 'em up fans have the Tekken and Soul Calibur series. Horror fans have the Silent Hill collection and Resident Evil 4. Driving fans have Gran Turismo 3&4 and the Burnout series. RPG fans have Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts.Party fans have Guitar Hero and Singstar. FPS fans have Killzone and the Timesplitters series. Adventure fans have Okami or Ico. Action adventure fans have the GTA series. Fantasy action fans have Devil May Cry 1-3, Onimusha 1-3 and God Of War 1&2. All of these titles can now be obtained at budget prices. The console itself is small enough to fit in small places if space is limited and is light enough to carry around unlike the heavy slab that is the PS3. Oh yes, it will play CD's and DVD's as well. I do own a PS3 but spend loads more time on my PS2. I am currently putting myself through the hell of Titan Mode in God Of War 2, expanding my criminal empire in Scarface and watching monsters the size of mountains fall in Shadow Of The Colossus. Fact is, these are the kind of gaming experiences few consoles can offer. If you operate on a budget or are looking for a first console with hundreds of titles to choose from then the PS2 is probably essential.

As Sony announce that production of the PS2 will finally end after nearly 13 years it seems right that a review is posted. I got mine in 2001 and it still works today however I have since moved to the Playstation 3. It is still working today. I remember it was £280 when it was first released in 2000. It was reduced to £240 soon after, which considered with the PS2s capability of playing DVDs seemed a good deal as DVD players were £100 minimum in 2001.The PS2 has an incredible list of classic games in a way the PS3 has not been able to replicate. Final Fantasy 10, Gran Turismo 4, Okami, Devil May Cry, ICO, Kingdom Hearts, Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Sly Cooper. Despite the weaker graphics, they are all still playable today. Even EyeToy was quite revolutionary but not really recognised as the first successful example of interactive gesture gaming which has no doubt inspired the Wii remote and Kinect. It will go down as the SNES of its era and rightly heralded as one of the best video game consoles of all time. If you have one - just keep it. If you haven't but are considering getting one on the cheap simply for nostalgic gaming then get one. I'm not a hoarder but I am refusing to sell my PS2 as it was a feature of my childhood for over 8 years. The PS2 games are dirt cheap now due to sheer amount of PS2 consoles & games that are in circulation. Also worth noting they will probably be cheaper on PS2 discs than when the PS2 games are flogged for download on the Playstation 4/5/6 etc.

I bought one of these after selling my PSP, why? when I already own a modified Xbox, Gamecube and PC. The back catalogue of games - simple as.Yes its smaller and as far as I am aware no major issues after 2+ years of owning one with the CD laser unlike the old fat model. Its small, quietish and plays everything you need. The graphics I find simply arent as crisp and clear as a Xbox -(dont believe me try playing GTA on ps2 then Xbox). This said there are some simplying stunning FMV's (final fantasy etc) on the PS2, the controller as well isnt as good or well thought out as the Xbox controller smaller unit.Yes it can play netplay- but a ps2 net adaptor is very rare and expensive (how many peopleyou know that have owned a PS2 and taken it on line?)- not to mention extremely dodgey connecting and keeping connected. The Xbox as well has this hands down beat with netplay/support.The main reason is frankly the games - the MASSIVE back catalogue of games justifies buying one alone. There is a huge amount of brilliant games in the bargain bin for this console. I now have a collection of over 200+ original. You can now pick one up brand new for about £50! due to the PS3 coming out. No I wont be buying one as frankly too expensive and I'd rather have a Xbox360, Oh and the fact that all the games you've collected for PS1+ PS2 on the european model will be limited to what you can actually play on it.Got a £100 to spend:?, buy a PS2 a few games and you wont be disappointed.

Ok the age-old question asked when you are in the market for a new console - do I get an Xbox or a Playstation 2?The Xbox is probably the more technically superior console that runs slightly faster than the PS2, but really, when this boils down to game play there is little difference felt for the average console user. The biggest difference is really the Xbox has a built in hard drive that can be used to save game data, however you must purchase a Memory card costing around £15 here on Amazon.I opted for the Playstation 2 (slim) and I can honestly say that I have not looked back on the decision. Sony has shrunk the new model by 75%, and when I first removed the PS2 from its box I was like "is that it".They have also changed the mechanism where you insert the disk. It feels much flimsier compared to the older model, but apparently, it reduces wear on the laser and should therefore eliminate disc read errors that can be found in many of the older models. As for choice of games Sony wins easily, unfortunately the Xbox cannot rival the amount of choice available.Have a search around for your new PS2 but when I did, checking all the high street and online retailers, no one was cheaper than Amazon was, although you maybe able to combine a number of games for better value in a high street retailer. Just make sure you know what you want before you go out and get it.I hope this review helps you.

The mighty ps2, the best selling console of all time, the largest game libary ever and the longest lifespan of any console ever. This thing was only discontinued in the uk in 2013. The year the ps4 came out. If you really think about it, thats incredible. With how fast technology grows nowadays, phones are discontinued after a year or two, theres a new generation ipod every year, the fact that a gaming console that came out 15 years ago is still in demand is crazy. Theres a reason for that though, modern gaming cant hold a candle to the past. When the ps1 and ps2 came out, everything was fresh, huge free roaming games like GTA are nothing new nowadays. I dare say people just expect that kind of thing nowadays, but when they first showed up on ps2 they were a revoloution. PS1 introduced 3D, ps2 introduced sandbox. The games libary is huge and diverse, theres no crap like dlc, psn hacks, system updates, patches, broken games, all you do is pop in a disc and play. I dare say the games are also better than todays call of duty copycat games. Game developers have lost their way today, games look incredible now, but many of them lack the depth, story and characters and variety of games in the ps2 era. Incredible console that will always sell despite being discontinued, people will always buy ps2, play ps2 and love ps2. The ps3 is on its last legs now, and this thing is still in demand. Incredible.

Having been asked what i would like for christmas ,i decided on the new simline pink playstation 2.my brother said why not get a wii or playstation 3 or an xbox 360,but i still wanted a ps2.why i here you shout ......... the games are fantastic (i especially like eye toy ,singstar and buzz),it can also play dvds and cds, the grapics are good(maybe not as could as the newer consoles but still fantastic),and its great value for money (the new xbox 360s are nearly £300 if you want the headset and speial cables, wheras my mum has only payed £150 for my playstation 2(which includes singstar and microphones,as well as a travel bag,).i personally think the playstation 2 is still going strong in itslater years and still has plenty more to offer the gaming world.dont give up one this little beauty you've not seen the last of them. playstation 2 are also very quiet so you dont have noise fans buzzing over the sounds in the games.the new slimline version fits very snuggly next to my tv ,so im not constantly getting told to put it away or tidy up the wires. It never over heats .and finally the cost of games is going down so you can have a large collection with out needing a loan (most xbox 360 games are around £40 ,wheras playstation 2 are around £20 - £30).be prepared to see more from the playstation 2 in 2007!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have had this console now for a couple of weeks and felt i should share my views on it. Firstly as most other reviewers have said, the slimline PS2 is tiny. When i first got it all unboxed i was speechless. How did they manage to get it all into this tiny chassis. Build quality on the machine is top class. The machine feels light but well made. Both graphics and sound on the PS2 are also very good. I know that the other consoles are more powerful but the ps2 still delivers where it counts. Some people have said that this model overheats easily. Let me say that while it does get faily warm it never overheats. Even after my 10 hour sessions the console never gets too hot.The console is pretty quiet too.For games the PS2 has a great choice. Games on the ps2 are a pleasure to play. Gameplay on the PS2 is on the whole very good and most games are smooth and responsive. The dual shock controller is great for pretty much anything you play. The layout of the contoller makes it accessible for anyone.Overall this is an excellent machine with a top class crop of games. Don't listen to people who say it is inferior just because it has less power. Gameplay wise it is just as capable as the Xbox and Gamecube. With top notch titles like Gran Turismo 4, Metal Gear Solid 3 and Tekken 5 on the way the future looks bright for the PS2.

It's hard to believe the PS2 is over a decade old now, and is still ticking in sales and having its library expanded even today (Although naturally less so compared to the current generation of consoles). But if you are looking to buy a cheap system to keep both the casual gamer and the dedicated gamer satisfied you can't do much wrong with this. The PlayStation 2 plays DVDs as well as PlayStation 1 games, and supports different controller imputs such as EyeToy and Guitar Hero controllers (Now also on the cheap), so looking for things to play around with on the PS2 isn't that difficult. On the downside in order to get 4 player controller action you have to buy a multi-tap.The PS2's vast library is an excellent reason to buy one if you have previously missed out. This includes the Prince Of Persia series, Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, Ico and Shadow Of The Collosus, Persona 3 and 4, Final Fantasy 10 and 12...the list goes on for ages. Take the time to check out the library and grab something that interests you! The games may be slightly aged but that in no way decreases their entertainment value. The same goes with the PlayStation 2.Have fun.

I want to start by saying that every machine has its critics, and I've myself not been keen on certain machines in the past but that does not mean that they are not a good machine, far from it! What I can say about the Playstation 2 is that it, like every other machine there is most likely something you will not like about it, for me I do not like the controller that much, but as a whole, the console is very good value for money and there are many many games out for it. There are a wide range of games and game genres and I think this console has done well to fit all criteria of games. As far as the console itself, the machine has a built in internet port (Unlike the original Playstation 2)and there are some games that are still online that can be found in this link[...], some of the games are now offline but there are a few that are still up and kicking! Anyone considering getting one of these for themself's or for someone they know/love I would say its a good idea, but like any machine, make sure to read the description for condition as some come with third party controllers and missing leads.I hope you enjoy you're games what ever machine you choose and happy gaming!Sean

I am an hardcore ps2 fan and will not hear a single bad word about it. The ps2 is THE console to own. Forget Xbox and it's copycat ways but instead think of all the quality titles you can buy. Xbox is pants, "why"?? because all the games on Xbox are lame and are usally games that have been out on the PC for years E.G. Operation Flashpoint. Look at project gotham racing A clone of GT4, then you have Doom 3 that is just about to be released on the X box and has been out for ages on the PC. Any way the new slimline PS2 is the best console by far because of the vast array of games availiable.GTA SA, GT4, MGS3, PES to name but a few and with a HUGH line up of brilliant games to be hitting the shelves soon you can be sure that you won't get bored with your ps2.Yes it does get hot but atleast Its not the size of a wheelie bin. I have had my slimline ps2 for about 3 months and have had no problems at all so to all you Xbox gamers GET ON THE WINNING SIDE. If you would rather blast dumb ass aliens back to the planet cack then buy an Xbox but if you want your games with a bit of CLASS and REALISM then buy a PS2.

RumoursWell there a re quite a few rumours about the new Slim PS2 going around.Rumour: There is no fan at the back.Reply: This is correct, but there is still a fan over the cpu.Rumour: It gets a lot hotter than the old PS2.Reply: Yes it does, the reason for this is the heatsink block for the cpu is right up against the outer case. This means the heat is transferred to the case. So you could think of the case as a giant heatsink.Rumour: There is better hardware out there.Reply: Yes, the PS2 is outdated, but it does have the best games on any console. If you want better hardware go and get a PC.Rumour: It will still have disk read errors.Reply: One of the main causes for disk read errors in the old PS2 where dust or a broken laser.Well with the new PS2 you can fix both of these with 10x the less hassle if they do occur. In all I would advice you if you already own a PS2 then don't buy this (unless your PS2 is broken). If you are looking for better hardware buy a PC. Some people may say the graphics are bad, but tbh if you look at the new GT4 then you will soon be proved wrong.
