It's back! After becoming impossible to find and being resold far above its market value on eBay, Nintendo have finally come back with a second run of the NES Classic Mini with enough stock for everyone. The NES was the console that brought home gaming back from the brink after the videogames crash of the early 80s. Nintendo was succesful in Japan and then started testing the water in various US cities. With all the positive reactions the NES was fully unleashed around the world - along with the classic Super Mario Bros. In Japan and the US the only game in town was the NES. In the UK (and most of Europe) Nintendo didn't do as well leaving the door open to Sega.Even so the NES was the quintessential console that most people aspired to until the release of the Megadrive. Now Nintendo has repackaged that classic console in miniature with 30 built-in games, including the stone-cold classics such as Mario 1-3, Zelda 1&2, Castlevania 1&2, Double Dragon 2, Mega Man 2 and more. The controllers are a full-scale replica of the originals and connect to the console via the standard Wii remote connector. This means that you can also use these controllers to play virtual console games on the Wii. One controller is included in the package and extra controllers can be bought separately (and amazingly, they're not a rip-off!). The menu system is a mixture of classic Nintendo pixel art and NES-style music. Each game has a few save slots allowing you to save your progress through the games (to access, press the reset button on the console and assign your state to one of the slots for the relevant game). The console is powered by USB (no AC adaptor in the box - you can use a phone charger or use a USB socket on your TV or games console). One word - the USB ports on the Nintendo Switch dock do not put out enough power; you need at least 1 amp. The system outputs AV via HDMI in 720p. USB and HDMI cables are included.Downsides? As has been noted the system is closed - it will not play NES/Famicon cartridges and there is no option to buy further games. If you look online there are some 'unofficial' options to load more games on but you can find these for yourself. It's been said before, but the controller cables are rediculously short - like not even three feet long. But, the games transcend these slight issues. Games play better than you remember - the games are the US NTSC versions (so Shadow Warriors regains its original name of Ninja Gaiden) meaning that they play full screen and full-speed unlike the original PAL console. The joys of finding a Mario warp zone or defeating a Mega Man boss still resonate today. Yes, there are some notable titles missing - Contra (Probotector in the UK), Snake Rattle n' Roll, the Turtles games, Castlevania 3, Mega Man 1 & 3 and more - but the titles that are there provide a masterclass of 80s classics and with the mini console and replica controller adds up to nostalgia in a box for anyone who player videogames in the late 80s.

This is a real blast from the past. It's like the 1980's all over again. I am old enough to remember these games first time around. I still have my Super Mario 3 Bros. cartridge sitting in its box on my bookshelf. After seeing the not so wonderful emulations on my Wii and the limited PC emulations these games look wonderfully fresh on this teensy console. You will say 'Awww' when you open the box.Like others will have said the controllers cord is painfully short. However after seeing advance reviews on YouTube I had invested in a 5m HDMI cable. The console now plugs into a power adapter beside my armchair. That way the console itself sits on my coffee table right in front of my.Now the controller cord is no longer a problem. I do have yards of HDMI cable looping across my lounge but I can live with that. The lack of a plug is a real shame which is why my review has dropped a star. The US version has one, so why not UK players? Ok with the plethora of mobiles, iPods and other gadgets finding a 5v adapter wasn't hard but that is not the point. You should be able to open the box, plug in and go. However you can't which is a shame.Apart from that minor gripe the games look amazing. I am playing on the 4:3 mode. I have seen enough blurry CRT games to know I never want to see one again. I might give the pixel perfect mode a whirl but the 4:3 looks grand on my 42" widescreen TV. Beautifully sharp, everything moves smoothly. Nintendo have replicated the original games precisely, even the glitchy background graphics as Kirby' scenery lurches left to right. I have spent about thirty minutes on Kirby and a little less on Megaman 2 and Metroid. Kirby was as easy as ever but I had forgotten about how difficult the other two were. Modern games are mostly very easy (except the odd franchise like Dark Souls). These babies however are hard but fair.I will be avoiding sports games like Punchout and Tecmo Bowl but the other 28 I am really keen to get to grips with. I have always maintained that graphics do not make a game but gameplay does. These games might be crude looking by modern standards but they are a real joy to play. Older players like myself will feel a real rush of nostalgia whereas younger players will hopefully see past the graphical faults and instead revel in the solid rewarding gameplay. Ace.

I'm a huge gaming fan, I tend to purchase all the consoles when they are released, I've even scoured eBay for consoles that I didn't get first time round, I just love gaming. If I had to choose just one console to be my favourite then it is, without doubt, the NES - maybe the Gamecube, actually, the PS2 wasn't shabby at all, oh but the Megadrive...Okay, there's probably some doubt, but the original NES was my very first games console, and, as such, commands a lofty position in my list of favourite consoles. Now, I already own a NES, and some of the games that come with the Nintendo Classic Mini, but as soon as I heard about this I just had to have one. When it arrived I was hugely taken by how small the box was,the aesthetics of the packaging took me back to when I first received my original NES. Cracking open the box, I was struck by how tiny, wee, small the Mini was, then again, I suppose the clue is in the name of the device. This thing is tiny, I immediately had to compare it to my original NES, and posted the obligatory pictures to Instagram, naturally.Plugging it all in, I was disappointed at how close I had to sit next to my TV, thanks to the extremely short cables of the single controller that is provided. This is, of course, well known, and there are various extension cables you can buy, or wireless plug ins for controllers such as the ones by 8BitDo.Be that as it may, it's the games that count, and the list of 30 games contains gaming classics such as the original 'Super Mario Bros' trilogy, 'The Legends of Zelda', 'Castlevania', 'Punch-Out!', the list is endless - well the list is 30, but you know what I mean...Admittedly, some of these titles haven't stood the test of time (I remember 'Balloon Fight' to be tremendous fun as a child, now, not so much), but, overall, the Mini is a pure, unadulterated nostalgic trip to gaming yesteryear. As for pricing, thanks to its scarcity, sellers have ramped the price way, way up, which is a shame, as the original £50 price tag was just perfect.Gamers raised on the likes of 'COD' and 'GTA' might find these games a bit on the 'twee' side, but to me, they're gaming masterpieces.

When the wife said she finally managed to acquire a NES Mini, I was quite excited. Along with my ZX Spectrum, the NES was my original gaming console and it gave me so many great memories. It was time to revisit those old games and then some. What you get in the box is fairly simple. You get two replica controllers, which feel quite similar to the originals and get the console itself. It powers on using the typical mini USB wall plug and obviously needs a HDMI cable to plug into your tv. It is pretty simple, lightweight and easy to put together.Turning the machine on felt so cool. We were greeted with an extremely colourful menu and a fairly optimistic tune playing in the background.I played some Super Mario Bros 1/3, Castlevania, Double Dragon 2 etc and had an absolute blast. The games look really good, sharp and surprisingly detailed on the big screen TV. I forgot the detail that was put into these games and looking at them for the first time in over 20 yrs, it was great to see. Not all games are great mind you. The console features a couple of original games that feel a bit lacking now. The original Donkey Kong is a remarkably short game, so short that I think it rivals Call of Duty in its lack of replayability. Mario Bros is also a bit naff. The simplistic game play and awful controls have no aged well at all. There are a few games like this but it is still quite cool to see them again. Even if it's just to remember how much I hated them originally. My only major gripe is the fact that the controller cables are so short that it is impossible to sit at a comfortable distance from your TV. You can however buy extension cables OR use the SNES Mini controllers which have a considerably longer reach.Gripes aside, I think this little machine was a great idea. It has most of the NES classics that I have been wanting to replay and it was great to get back to them. Fans of the console should definitely pick this up, but only if you can get it for the original asking price of £50. Anything more is a rip off and please be aware that there are fakes in circulation.

Amazon's courier lost my original order of this but fortunately, I was able to buy one from a third party without paying two or three times the price. As someone who really enjoys retro games, I felt buying one of these just for nostalgia was non-negotiable and when I finally got it, it was worth the wait.Perhaps only the most hardcore gamers will like all 30 of the pre-installed games but even with the three Super Mario Bros titles, there's so much variety that most retro game fans will find several games they'll really enjoy. The games look reakky sharp on an HD TV though the NES Classic has a mode that gives that slightly fuzzy look of a CRT display though I find this to just be a nostalgic gimmick. As specified in the description, the console is not supplied with an AC adapter to plug into the Micro USB port. With the console being a low-voltage device, I can use the powered USB port on my TV to power it.There are a couple of negatives, both are relatively minor but frustrating all the same.1) To change game or load a save state, you have to reset the console. There's no means to do this with the controller, even with a Start & Select press to reset as had been seen on the SNES' Super Mario All Stars. However, as the controller port is the same as that on the Wii, you can use the Wii Classic controller and its Home button can be used to trigger a reset.2) The controller cable is far too short for a lot of gamers. At just a yard long, it's OK if you play this console on a small screen TV but if you're playing on anything larger than ~26", you'll be too close to the screen. Extension leads are plentiful and there are wireless solutions but Nintendo could have been more generous with the cable length as I doubt that a six-foot cable would have broken the bank.Overall, I'm delighted with this console for the nostalgia it brings. It's a shame that Nintendo did such a limited run of them as those who missed out are at the mercy of resellers who charge you 2-4 times the price for the privilege.

I was one of the lucky ones to get a pre-order in on the day of announcement. I'm pretty glad I did as it looks like they'll be scarce for a while. But please don't pay third party sellers more than retail for this, it'll be back in stock soon. Be patient and you'll save £100.The package itself is pretty amazing. It's small & light but with no compromise on build quality or aesthetic. It comes with HDMI and USB (micro) cables in the box but no USB power adapter (US gets one, but not EU, nor the snazzy poster). However, you can power the system from a USB slot on your TV if it has one. I've done this and can confirm it works. The controller is fine but is let down by 30" cable length and no way to go to the main menu. You have to use the reset button on the console for this. HOWEVER, I picked up a Wii classic controller and will be using this from now on. The cable length is not much better but it has a home button that works and most amazingly... the analogue sticks work!!! You don't get full analogue control but you can use them for up, down, left & right instead of the D-pad.But what about the games? I've been gaming since the Commodore64. I'd played Ocarina of time & Goldeneye on a borrowed N64 but that's it, I've never owned a Nintendo console. The nes classic represents a pretty serious gap in my gaming cv. I'd played loads of 80's games on C64 & megadrive but no Mario, Megaman, Castlevania etc. The only game on this I have played is a C64 version of Bubble Bobble and that feels just like I remember. I've still not sampled all the games on this yet but so far they look and feel like 80's games. With all the good and bad that comes with that. Anyone who never played games like these or if it's been so long you've forgot, you may struggle at first to get into the catalogue. I did. But after a couple of hours hopping from game to game, I'm discovering really fun games I'd missed over a lifetime of gaming.

Pre-ordered last year at a fraction of the, now bloated, price. I got mine for £50 and it was just about worth it, so don't spend anymore than this on one of these. It's a fun little system and tiny as well. Pre-loaded with 30 games and most of them are fun and there are a few standouts like The Mario Brothers trilogy, Zelda and Double Dragon. Old time graphics that are exactly like the classic Nintendo from 30 years ago and you can now save games at any point, which saves so much of the frustrations felt from being 10 years old (although my reflexes were clearly quicker when I was ten). No lag experienced and the controller works well and again, provides another flashback.I've read comments about no plug but this isn't an issue if your smart TV has a USB slot as you can power the console through this via your TV and it comes with a HDMI cable as well so it was 2 minutes to set up and get going.Few flaws that hamper the gaming experience and stop it from being a 5 star stand out...1- the wired controller cable lead is so short and this is a real pain as the leads for the console to the TVs are not that long either. This is the biggest design flaw. It's only comes with one controller so if you're buying another then buy the 6ft one or you can buy a lead extension.2- to save progress you have to hit reset on the console, rather than just hitting 'start' or 'select' on the controller. If the console isn't near you this is a pain.3- the console itself doesn't have a cartridge slot so you can't insert cartridges and no word on whether you'll be able to download any more in the future: the console is powered via USB so arguably could be connected to computer or smart tv to download in the future if Nintendo ever decide to do this.Overall, it's a great trip down memory lane that is just about worth £50 and spend anymore and you'll more than likely be disappointed.

A fantastic retro console from Nintendo that delivers everything it sets out to with aplomb but might leave you wishing it had set out to do more.Chief among these omissions is the lack of any internet connection and ability to download further games from Nintendo's eShop. Surely an own goal for them and a disappointment to fans of the games that didn't make the cut. Similarly, online leaderboards could have added a new dimension and limitless lifespan to many of these titles. The argument against including any of that is cost, obviously, which on release day when scalpers are selling these things for over £100 to loyal Nintendo fans is something of a moot point.Fool that I am,instead of trying to sell mine to you, I've been playing it. So, while I'm getting the negativity out of the way, I'll explain the most legitimate reason for taking a star away. The lead for the controller is woefully short, around 30 inches. This could cause slight issues with many set ups. Realistically, the Mini NES has to be sitting by your side in order for you to play, or, to go truly oldskool, you'll need sit in front of the television - unless you can find an extension cable (Nintendo aren't making any at the time of writing). And with that out of the way, time to focus on the goodness of the four stars. The production values of the console itself are immaculate, it is a thing of beauty and as easy as you could ever hope to set up. You've got an HDMI cable to plug into the TV, a USB lead to power the thing, a power button on the front of the console to start it up and you're good to go. Ah, dammit, I've just remembered another negative: there's no AC adapter in the box. Shouldn't be an issue if you have a mobile phone and/or tablet charger in the house. I'm running mine straight off the USB socket on this surge protector

My wife bought me this as a gift and although the inflated price tag is really shameful, I genuinely cannot fault Nintendo for the quality of the product. The game emulation looks glorious on on the Modern TV and the interface is polished and does the legacy of the NES justice. The unit is really small and lightweight but it is well detailed and a joy to use. The controller is a perfect replica of the original, feels good in the hand and although there has been a lot of noise about the cord length, it is supposed to be a scaled down replica so I can actually see Nintendo's thought process, although it does make it pretty much unusable as you cannot sit that close to the TV for longer than 5 mins without eye strain of some kind.Plenty of cheap offerings on Amazon to resolve this issue though. The packaging is great and a collector's dream. From a collector's point of view it is great that this is a genuine Nintendo product unlike the SEGA & Atari flashback etc. offerings which are 3rd party or from those who have bought the name of the company which has long been abandoned. If you are not into collecting and just want to have a blast on some retro gaming now & then, I do recommend a raspberry Pi setup as you can emulate generations of consoles. For me it's a brilliant product but the re-sellers charging over the odds need to have a long hard look in the mirror as it's the end user that ultimately suffers due to the sharks buying up all the stock for profit and not allowing those who want to enjoy the product be able to purchase one at the correct price.

I have finally been able to get one direct from Nintendo and it is good fun. I used to play on my older cousins' NES when I was a kid so it brings back memories of staying up way past my bedtime taking it in turns trying to complete Megaman and Super Mario Bros.I think it is a bargain at £49.99 but if I had paid more than the RRP for it I would be disappointed. A few of the games are quite glitchy (screen tearing on Kirby's Adventures for example) and there are some pretty dull choices preinstalled (you can add more games to it at your own risk and with fairly questionable legality). The controller leads are quite short as others state but the HDMI lead is long enough to have the console halfwaybetween the TV and the sofa.Currently waiting for the official Nintendo controllers to come back into stock at RRP as third party controllers are hit and miss in terms of quality. I'd buy an 8bitdo NES controller but I'm not prepared to pay >£30 for an extra pad for a £50 console. This review was previously one star as the price is being hugely pumped by scalpers. Even the spare controllers are being listed for over 6x the RRP. Hold off and buy when supply levels increase. Nintendo are still manufacturing this and more stock is coming in weekly. There is no need to pay over the odds for this! Conclusion: Well worth the RRP of £49.99 but no more than that.

I bought this not for the NES games as I'm more of an Atari 2600/80s Arcade fan but because I knew that it could easily be modded to play other systems such as Atari, Arcade (MAME), as well as 16-bit and 32-bit era games via Retroarch. It even has a great port of Doom called Brutal Doom which is one of my favourites.Of course you should only add games that you actually own. It's a lot easier to set this up to play those other games than it is with a Raspberry Pi - I have both and I'm quite techy. Not just easier but it's nicer too, the mini NES case and controller are high quality as you'd expect from Nintendo and the menu/front-end looks very good too.I'd recommend getting a Wii Classic Controlleras that has twin analogue joysticks as well as a d-pad and plenty of buttons too - much better for other systems than the included NES controller. The NES controller ports are the same as the Wii Classic Controller connector so it just plugs straight in.I'd also recommend getting a controller lead extension for whatever controller you use - the included NES controller's lead is quite short. If you want to do the mod to add Retroarch etc just google it.Once modded you can even load games direct from a USB stick if you buy an angled OTG adaptor which points away from the other cable around the back of the unit.

Just got it in the post the other day and now have been playing it like mad since. Fabulous piece of equipment for anyone who is a big nintendo fan and who likes to collect the memorabilia, one well worth adding to your collection. It has all of those important nes games which are as everyone with sense knows the first three mario games, most of all the third the world over. I had such a great time playing sm 3 the other day there. Kirby's dreamland was pretty fun too. Theres some other cool titles there for consideration too. Many people's excuse for a complaint would be that there is only thirty games on it when on other emulator consoles (unofficial ones of course) there is above the limit of 200 or more. All of that is fine but if you like certain genres and are a fan of them like me and lots of others out there then you might at the same time just consider this one too. Another issue for people is that the cables are quite short as well. They will barely reach as far as you that player so word of warning for any buying this machine, you may just want to consider buying an extended cable to with it rather than relying on the smaller one provided. Though quite fragile its also a very stylish device, nice and small as well. So much that it will literally fit in the palm of your hand.

Having spent many an hour as a kid sat in front of the original NES, I oreordered this the minute it was announced - sounds like more people should have....First impressions, it's tiny... Easily fitted into the park of your hand, all the details have been faithfully replicated, even the power and reset buttons feel the same. The cartridge door doesn't open, but not then sure what would be the point - unless expandable storage/games etc? Whilst I'm on the subject, this can't be expanded, new games cannot currently be added (unless someone hacks it soon)The selection of games is good... Not great, but good, you'll find loads of Mario, some of the classics like double dragon etc,it's just a shame that they couldn't have replicated duck hunt.... :(Setup is easy, plug and play, with power delivered by micro USB, and Signal to the TV via HDMI, rather than aux or via aerial pass through like back in my day.Oh, and you'll have probably read the cables are short, well they are... Too short... you'll be sat in front of the telly getting square eyes, like your mam said you would as a kid.The only thing they need is to replicate blowing on the cartridges, and it'll be 1987 for me again.

The Nintendo Classic Mini is an excellent way to get some good old fashion button bashing going, in these times of super duper consoles with enormous games and price tags. For under 50 quid, the NES mini is a no brainer must buy for anybody interested in old classic games, and will sit well under any Xmas tree this holiday season. As many have already said, the single Controler in the box, has a cable that is to short.Clearly this was deliberately done by Nintendo, possibly to make you gravitate to the soon to be released Nintendo Swift console, not a cool decision in my opinion. There is a USB cable in the box and a hdmi cable but no actual charger plug provided for it.It would have been nice to have the pretend cartridge slot open and do something, but it does not, never mind. The console is DIDDY!!! (Very small)Almost toy like which is funny and I suppose keeps the costs down. The controller is a good copy of the original controller and does the job it's supposed to so that is nice to see.Anyway, when it's back in stock because of greedy people not playing fair, I recommend getting it and enjoying Nintendos superb gaming history.

It's so small, I was shocked how small it is, but it's got big games, myself and my 2 boys absolutely love it, the sound and graphics are fantastic, much better than the virtual console in my opinion, you have 4 suspend points which are great for saving games , and now the only downside to this thing is the controller cable, you have to see it to believe it, whoever at Nintendo thought " hey let's make the cord short" needs slapped, now some of these games need precision in the jumping so for me the controller has to be wired so I don't care that it isn't wireless but it really needs to be at least 3 times the length it is. Highly recommended if you find an extension cable.I wouldn't pay the silly money some people are charging for it on eBay I mean it's good but not £130 good On another note I am a prime member who preordered this on the 14th of July but had to wait an extra day for delivery, disappointed with the Amazon service tbh but at least it arrived in the end. If like me you played a nes in the 80's and miss the times before day one patches and updates then this is for you. Nice being a kid again....
