The good: Exquisite design on the console, best of any mini console yet in my opinion, the details are great, a real collectors gem. The two controllers supplied are excellent quality and perfect reproductions of the original with a decent cable length unlike Nintendo's efforts. Standard USB connectors as well should offer good compatibility with other formats (as yet untested). A good number of games and a very easy to use and well designed UI with box art and easy to understand settings and more importantly, easily accessed from the controller during gameplay, again unlike Nintendo's efforts. Games are perfectly responsive and look good on a modern TV although large screens may be less forgiving due to the low resolution used back then.Overall the best emulation yet outside of PC and less 'official' emulation but not perfect (see The Ugly below). The bad: Selection of games could be better. I know this is personal preference but there are some glaring omissions. Where are the Sega arcade classics like OutRun and Afterburner. Why only Streets of Rage 2 (admittedly the best one!), Shinobi 3 but no Revenge of Shinobi? I'm sure licensing has played a part here but the collection does feel a little incomplete.Whilst excellent quality the controllers provided are only the three button variety which makes playing Street Fighter 2 a pain but this one game shouldn't be a deal breaker and there is an excellent 6 button pad available which works perfectly with this device. Also, without the inevitable hacking, there is no scope for firmware updates or adding games, something that the second generation Flashback HD has a distinct advantage over this device. The Ugly: The CRT filter is a shocker, worst attempt I've ever seen and should be avoided at all costs. Unfortunately this leaves no options for smoothing the pixels on a modern TV. You can stretch the image to fit widescreen but I personally think this is even worse unless you prefer fat sprites of course. My biggest issue however is that there is sound lag with the audio a few frames behind the visuals, not quite as bad as the AT Games consoles but it is still noticeable, especially on the quicker games like the Sonic games where it seems worst. Also, I do own the original console and the sound isn't quite perfect on some games but honestly for most people this won't be an issue; but the lag is annoying as AT Games were criticised quite heavily on this point so it's probably only fair to point it out on this device as well. It's better but not perfect.Overall: Best HD Megadrive console yet but not perfect and not a clear winner for me over the second gen Flashback HD as there are pluses and minus' for and against each when going head to head. If you have to get one and don't have a collection of cartridges to test and you're not bothered about the the odd missing title here and there it's a no brainer. Either way you're gonna have sound lag!

This is an amazing emulator with a great build quality. It does one thing and it does it well.I won't comment on individual games, everybody has their favourites. The selection has a great deal of classics as well as some that I am happy to try out for the first time and explore together with the kids.It comes with 1 HDMI cable, 2 controllers and a USB cable. There is no power adapter so you will need to dig out that old Android phone charger to keep this on.The TV output is 720p at 60Hz, that's it, it doesn't matter if you connect it to a 1080p or 2160p monitor or anything with higher refresh rate. The display settings are quite bare bones, just wide screen or not and a "CRT" shader that makes the image quite blurry (probably applies smoothing to the frame). The controllers are well made, the Dpad is perhaps one of the best in existence. There is no Turbo functionality, at least not with the stock firmware. The controller is quite large, no I really mean LARGE. It is wider than a modern console one. But is only the 3 button variant so any Street Fighters will need to use Start to switch between punches and kicks just like in the original.Ok so why 4 Stars? I have a few major complaints. This is a classic game console but is released in 2019, there are some things that is not really acceptable to be missing, when other platforms and handhelds support for 15 years now. Lets have a look:1. There is no "menu" button on the controller. You need to reach the console to do anything, save state, load, reset, go to the library, access settings. Annoying. The controller is so ridiculously oversized and empty that is practically screaming that it needs a menu button. Ironically any third party controller does have a menu button.2. No parental controls. I would like to have a simple controller based PIN to lock away some of the games I deem not suited. Also have a gaming time eg 1, 2, 3 or 4 hours per say 24 hour period. Nothing fancy with calendars etc, just a plain timer that asks for parental PIN or takes you to the menu. No, nothing.3. Cant take screenshots, and obviously no captures. Now when you can find emulators with retro running on a similar tiny device that support bith an MicroSD and USB flash drives, it is disappointing for the official console to not be able to just make and store a basic screeshot. Way to go Sega.4. No save state backup. Just like the above, you cant take your save game and copy it to another machine.

This is a fantastic little package. The love and care that went into creating the mini console and controllers is even greater than Nintendo's two previous efforts. In terms of game selection, these haven't aged quite as well as the Super Nintendo mini. I'd say, purely for the games, the SNES mini is a better package, but taking into account the hardware too, I'd say they're roughly equal. Some of the games just won't hold your interest, like Space Harrier 2, Columns, Tetris, Alex Kid, Landstalker, Comix Zone, Altered Beast and golden Axe.Games that still hold up on this include Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Thunder Force 3, Castle of Illusion, Dynamite Headdy, Shinobi 3,Streets of Rage 2, Castlevania Bloodlines, Gunstar Heroes, Ghouls and Ghosts/Probotector, Contra: Hard Corps. Phantasy Star 4 and Shining Force are highly regarded too. Street Fighter 2 is a great game too, but the Megadrive sound is a bit weak and you don't really want to play it with a 3 button controller. Some people thing that this should have come with the 6 button pad, but that would kill the nostalgia factor for most of us. We grew up with and have nostalgia for the 3 button controller, even if it is a bit limited. As for missing games, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic and Knuckles are the biggest omissions. there's no reason not to have them. Revenge of Shinobi 1 and Streets of Rage 1 are also sorely missed. And personally, I'd have liked QuackShot Starring Donald Duck, Gaiares and Lightning Force too. Fortunately, you can hack the Megadrive mini and add any games you feel are missing from the collection. The internal storage is tiny however, so anyone hoping to add Sega CD or 32X games is in for a headache.I've been playing this on a HD tv in gaming mode and haven't noticed the input and sound lag that has been reported. I'm sure it is there, but I think you would have to be very sensitive to such things to even notice it.I paid £55 or 65 Euros, which I think is a very fair price, and for anyone who's looking for some Megadrive nostalgia, using real Megadrive controllers, lots of games handily in the box, and without the hassle of hooking up a real Megadrive to a HD tv in 2020, this is a great option!

The Megadrive mini is a superb mini console, the emulation was handled by M2 who are pretty amazing when it comes to classic console emulation. The emulation is pretty spot on, well as good as it can be emulating games that were never meant to be seen on a HDTV.There is a nice little added bonus that swapping the region to Japanese gives you not only the look and feel of the Japanese version of the menu but this actually changes the roms, meaning you can play the alternate rom versions and on some games this does make a difference such as the extra effects in the Japanese version of Sonic the Hedgehog. All the usual features are there such as load and save states as well as a couple of customisible background options. The big problem with the Megadrive mini console is the Megadrive itself, its such an iconic system with so many amazing games that curating a list is no easy task and Sega has done well here but no matter what you put on there will always be someones favourite game not included. The genres are also represented well apart from sports and racing, Road Rash 2 seems to be the sole representative, for me this is the biggest disappointment as the Megadrive was known for it's sports properties throughout its lifetime. However what is here are some of the most recognisable games from the system. The system only comes with a three button pad in the UK but for me that's not a bad thing, you can always invest in an extra 6 button pad. The three button pad is the original and what I used growing up so that particular pad brings back lots of memories. One last thing to mention the joypads have a usb connection which is brilliant because if the lead is too short for your liking you can just pick up a cheap usb extension lead and problem solved. The joypads also feel authentic, the weight feels good and they work a treat. Its a great package and an amazing representation of such as iconic system, there are so many small details such as the cartridge door opens, the volume slider actually slides and even the expansion port covering is there, though useless, its all a nice touch. Sega has done the old system proud.

I bought this as a pure nostalgia hit and I must say it didn't disappoint! Firstly the product itself is beautifully packaged, with the graphics of the console on the front and all the original covers of the games on the back and it really makes you look forward to taking the thing out and playing it.As to the device itself, yes it's small, but perfectly proportioned, they have even made it so that the cartridge slot opens and closes. Ok, so you don't need a working looking cartridge slot, but it's a really nice touch. And I think the aesthetics of any of these mini-consoles are important as they really give you a feel for the quality of the product itself. Talking of quality and quantity, you get 42 mostly classic games here. So there are always one or two clunkers in any selection like this, but in general pretty much every game has it's merits, and some are such classics such as the Sonic games that they just speak for themselves. I really found myself becoming that excited young lad playing these games again, it does bring back that excitement. Most of them I had not played for well over 25 years and they still play really well and I have to say the emulations are spot on. I can't notice any lag in sound or video personally and they look crystal clear on a modern large screen TV. It's also nice that you can keep to the original 4/3 ratio, which is the way they are meant to be played. The controllers too are really first rate and feel good in the hands and do what you expect. Although, yes you could do with a 6 button controller to mash to really get into games like Streets of Rage II, saying that I still really enjoyed revisiting this brilliant beat em up again, a truly great game and just great fun, which is the whole point of little consoles like this. All in all a fantastic nostalgia hit for any gamer, beautifully packaged and made from Sega and just brings back the good old days of 16 bit gaming. A mini modern classic!

Having experienced a few of the previous plug & play Mega Drive consoles, when I heard Sega were going to produce their own mini classic version I was very excited, because at last, we should get a console that plays and sounds the way we remember, and it's been worth the wait.Sega have done themselves proud, by essentially recreating their famous 16bit Mega Drive console, but in a mini form factor, and with lots of 'good' games built-in. I own a few of these mini classics, in addition to my originals, and the attention to detail, and build quality on this one is absolutely fantastic, even the volume slider moves, and the controllers look & feel every bit as good as the originals (3 button pads included, but for street fighter ideally you'll want the 6 button pads). Obviously views on things like the choice of included games is subjective, but I think they've hit the right spot, in terms of popular titles, quality and quantity, with each game essentially costing just £1 at the current console price of £59.95 or so. The game selection menu itself is simple to use, and easy on the eye, and of course the games themselves never looked so good over HDMI, rather than the old RF or composite / scart. One of the problems with all the other so called mega drive machines is the sound tended to be slow, or scratchy etc, but of course Sega have done a sterling job, with no such problems evident on this console.I have to admit, from a collectors point of view, I live the attention to detail and small size, sits nicely on the shelf, but more importantly, the games are still really good fun to play, highlighting just how far Sega were able to push the technology of the time during the 16bit era. Just to really set the era, why not watch a few of their infamous Sega TV ads, brilliant! If your a Sega fan, I'd highly recommend, and if your a Nintendo fan, aren't you curious as to what Sega did and nintendon't?

For those looking to experience the joy of the Mega Drive without shelling out on the original console, then this is finally it! I had previously bought the PS2 disc of 30 Mega Drive classics and was thoroughly underwhelmed by it, as it was nearly all basic and poor games from the dawn of the Mega Drive.... this mini MD however comes packed with plenty of your favourites from back in the day.The highlights for the 42 included games for me are:Sonic 1 & 2 - everyone's favourite hyper speed platformer that is still great fun todayGunstar Heroes - a frantic and fiendishly addictive 2 player blasterDynamite Heady - gorgeous graphics and cute and fun gameplayStreets Of Rage 2 - one of my favourite MD games ever,an absolute blastRoad Rash 2 - violent motorbiking, especially great in 2 player modeEarthworm Jim - addictive platformer with some of the best MD graphicsStreet Fighter 2 - you remember it, you love it. Although it's not great with the standard 3 button controller (you can buy a 6 button for this mini)Eternal Champions - Sega's attempt to capitalise in the SF2/Mortal Kombat success and they make a very good job of itCastlevania - Nice retro haunted house hack n slash.Alisia Dragoon - early platform sword and sorcery with great playabilityMean Bean Machine - fiendishly addictive Columns style gameThunder Force 3 - manic shoot em up mayhemCastle Of Illusion - wonderful 2 player puzzle platformer with awesome graphicsOf course however, everyone will remember the terrible MD games and there are quite a few dates and poor games that play horribly here - Altered Beast, Golden Axe, Mega Man, Alex Kidd, Space Harrier 2, Wonder Bros, Super Fantasy Zone etc. However despite the duffers this is a case where, u like the Ps2 disc, the great far, far outweighs the bad, making this an essential purchase for any old school Mega Drive fan.

I've been a gamer going back to the 8 bit days and have a real nostalgia for the 16 bit era and the huge step forwards that games took during that time.I had a megadrive back in the day but never had that many games for it, being restricted by the realities of a student budget back then.I've been looking at the various retro consoles and weighing up whether to get then or to get the games in some classic collections for the current consoles (or via retro Pie). After seeing the various reviews of this one I decided to make it my first retro console. I'm really pleased with the end result. The console comes with a (tiny) base unit, a shrunken down version of the original console but with only the on/off switch functioning. The cartridge slot etc just being for appearance. It connects to your TV via HDMI (and looks great on my 4K TV) and is powered via a USB cable (it doesn't come with a plug, though I've connected mine to my TV USB socket). It has two wired controllers, fairly light but they work well and seem to do the job fine. The console comes with a selection of 42 games and comes with something for every gamer. It includes some nailed on Megadrive classics and a nice range from most genres.. The emulation is very smooth and upscaling great. They also play responsively. It's a very well put together package. There is a menu function available by holding down start that allows you to save the current state of any game you are playing.. this is a big boost that didn't used to be there and helps when jumping between the games trying them out and when you just want a short game session.Overall I'm delighted with this. It does exactly what I'd hoped and brings the Megadrive back to life at a very good price with an excellent selection of games.

Ever since Nintendo released the NES Mini, mini versions of classic gaming consoles have been all the rage. Now it's SEGA's Turn.Various versions of the Sega Mega Drive has been released by third-parties over the years, but this is the first official re-release of the Mega Drive from SEGA themselves. The package includes:* SEGA Mega Drive Mini* Two Wired Controllers* HDMI Cable* USB Power Cable (No USB wall adapter is included)The console itself is fantastic. SEGA has done an amazing job here. Even the cartridge slot opens up (of course, it isn't used for anything). The controllers look exactly like the original. Apart from the USB port being at the end of the controller cable, you'd struggle to tell the difference. The D-pad works great and the buttons are responsive.Games play great too. There aren't too many settings to play around with, but you can play games in the original 4:3 aspect ratio or go full screen. All 42 games are presented well. You can view them all using the front cover or side sleeve. All games can be sorted in a variety of ways, such as genre, release date, number of players etc. There's a good variety of games such as Sonic 1 and 2, Strider, Street Fighter II, Ecco the Dolphin, Road Rage 2, Tetris, and more. It's a little annoying though that no sports games have been included as the Mega Drive had many classics.Online play would have been great too, but overall I am really pleased. SEGA have did a fantastic job recreating the design of the original console and the included controllers are superb. If you aren't a massic retro gamer, you may want to just buy the Sega Mega Drive Classics game instead, but I think most people who grew up with the Mega Drive will love this :)Kevin

If you are a diehard fan of the original Mega Drive and bought many of the games that came out that would be considered niche nowadays, this is for you. Some of the games that people are most familiar with such as Flicky, Bonanza Bros, Desert Strike, Sonic 3 & Knuckles for example aren't included, and are instead probably replaced with unusual RPG's and games such as Light Crusader, Shining Force, Alisia Dragoon. For someone who grew up with Sega and hasn't even heard of these games, it's clear that Sega listened to the diehard fans and gave them what they wanted. Yes, there's games like Road Rash II, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Dynamite Headdy, Comix Zone, Vectorman, Shinobi III, for a casual player, don't be surprised if you play these games a few times and never touch the system for a while. However, if you're tech savvy, it is indeed possible to modify the system and add your own desired games, however do that at your own risk.Emulation is super clean, sharp and crisp on my 50 inch 4K compatible TV, the system runs at 720p 60FPS when games support it. An option for 4:3 aspect ratio is available as well as full screen for those who want it.Two background images are available to choose from when you select 4:3 mode or you can choose black pillars as well as an option for a CRT filter, which emulates scan lines and roughly emulates the rounded, fuzzy nature of an RF signal. As a bonus too, if your TV has an open USB slot available, you can use that to power up the system instead of having to use a dedicated power brick.Would I recommend this product? Yes, it's far better than anything ATGames have produced or ever will in their lifetime and there's plenty of fun to be had. Also, two controllers. Kerching.

Regret no longer having your original Sega Mega Drive, or just love Sega games in general and don't want the faff of going down the Raspberry Pi route? Then this is for you. With a plethora of some of THE best Sega Mega Drive classics, perfectly emulated by the geniuses at M2, the Mega Drive mini, sits around along side the SNES mini as one of the best re-issues in the mini platform. As a kid, I went down the Super Nintendo route (mum and dad couldn't afford both consoles), and I now have the SNES mini, but this time around I wanted to see what the other side was all about, so I bought the Mega Drive mini too. This is the OFFICIAL release of the Mega Drive mini. Please do not confuse it with the awful 3rd party imitations that are also around. This has near perfect emulation in graphics and sound, sturdy build quality, and stunningly accurate miniature representation of the original hardware. The games you'll be after are essentially there. 42 in total - The list is in the product description. Yes, if we're nitpicking there might be the odd omissions, like Sonic 3... but fear not, for those techies out there more can be added to your own personal taste. There really isn't anything negative to say about this product. Mega Drive fans who loved but no longer have the original should rejoice. Those from the other side, like me, have the opportunity of owning another icon in miniature form.In the box: The console itself, 2 wired controllers, HDMI cable, USB cable. There is no power adaptor (wall plug)For those looking to 'add' games, the USB cable that comes with the console doesn't not transfer data. One that does is required. The SNES mini USB cable or the PS4 controller charging cable will work.

This is SEGA’s first return to the home hardware business in nearly 20 years but is it perfect?First things first, all system on a chip consoles have minor and minimal audio delay and or input delay - this is an unfortunate problem that happens to the SNES/NES classic, PlayStation Classic and NEOGEO mini - this console will also suffer from the same issue due to the way these SO-CALLED systems are built but after playing it for a few weeks now il have to admit that it’s barely noticeable and casual gamers will definitely not notice any issues. That’s the bad bit out of the way.42 great games (some not so great)and guess what SEGA have even paid licensing fees to other publishers to give us some amazing third party games that if you were to buy the original games would set you back hundreds if not maybe even over a thousand.Castlevania (KONAMI) Road Rash 2 (EA) Castle Of Illusion (Disney) are just a few big names here and those publishers are not cheap. SEGA have paid through the nose for us to enjoy this master piece. The Street Fighter 2 issue...People are complaining of punches or kicks not working with street fighter 2 but this is because to play this game on a three button control pad you need to push the start button to flick between kicks and punches. If this is a deal breaker for you then good news is that you can buy a 6 button controller to go with this console.Just thought I would get some thoughts of my chest as no one needs miss guidance leading them to missing out on this great retro console.I’d suggest other reviewers update their review but I doubt they will...

So this is a very solid retro console. Build quality is very good, attention to detail is great. Love how most of the buttons on the console actually work. Well done Sega... now here is what would have made this absolutely amazing:Include the 6-button controller (especially since some of the games use it -hello Street Fighter, and the Japanese version got the 6-button controllers).Put a working audio jack in the front (like the original). I think that would have been very helpful and pretty easy to do (hello Raspberry Pi)Standard 6-button USB Sega controllers don't all work??!!? Not sure what's going on there but I have 2 different ones and both are not recognised by the console.(work great on my Raspberry Pi so I know they use generic drivers). The game library is nearly a masterpiece with a few games I would have swapped out to make perfect (I know this is more of an opinion but you might agree with some of these):remove:World of IllusionProbotectorStory of ThorVirtual Fighter 2Eternal ChampionsDynamite HeaddyLight CrusaderReplace with some of these:Phantasy Star IIPhantasy Star IIISuper Street Fighter 2Sonic and KnucklesRevenge of ShinobiThunder Force 2Gain GroundAir BusterCrack DownBatmanShadow DancerE-SwatGranadaCastlevania BloodlinesVector Man 2Disney's AladdinHerzog ZweiGaiaresShinning ForceShinning Force 2Shinning in the Darknessand I can go on...Better yet, charge twice the price and add ALL of these! :-)

Brilliant to play the mega drive again in its original form.i always preferred this design over the mega drive 2 and its ugly mega cd add on.really well made console true to the original albeit a mini version and using the controllers again feels great after all this time.build quality and box is great and accurate for the original and really kicks it home that sega is trying to give it the true mega drive feel unlike the dodgy blaze mega drives that have been around for some time.there some great games on here,I think there’s 42 altogether and most of them were really good back in the day of my youth and my all time favourite road rash 2 makes an appearance.personally I think the game choice is the best out of all the mini consoles so far.the emulation so far seems accurate and the sound too.you can also choose full screen or bordered in the menu and also switch to crt for that true retro feel.connects via hdmi to all modern TVs and is powered by your TVs USB port so you don’t need a plug if you have usb on your tv.all in all you are getting an accurate mini mega drive with some of the best games on the console faithfully reproduced for the equivalent of about £2 a game so why are you reading this and not ordering it?its great for people who owned the original and also new retro gamers wanting to experience the mega drive without having to pay crazy money buying originals in good condition.well worth it,awesome mini console

An ideal way to time travel back to the gaming days of your youth! Very easy to set up - plug in, connect the hdmi cable and turn it on. Easy to navigate the menus and very simple to switch between games. The controllers feel just like the originals plus have a generous length of cable too. Also top marks for giving us two controllers in the package unlike some recent retro consoles. The actual console is delightfully tiny - very handy in the modern age where multiple devices are congregating under the TV!The selection of games is very decent - plenty of classic titles here and while a couple might not have been the greatest games ever released for the Mega Drive/Genesis - yes,I'm looking at you Altered Beast and Golden Axe - no exercise in Sega nostalgia could miss them out really. Of course this new incarnation has a very handy feature too - you can now save the games - no more going right back to the start after Sonic drowns on that bloody water level now! While some early pre-release reviewers noted a very slight tag in the sound, so far I've not noticed this - I'm guessing the models out now have had a firmware fix to sort it.A HUGE improvement on the previous Mega Drive retro consoles in very way. And a great price too considering this includes a whopping 42 games. A fantastic little retro console!
