Considering this is (probably) the last handheld dual-screen series product from Nintendo (wouldn't be surprised if there is another version; hopefully with a better name) considering the rise in sales and promotion for the Nintendo Switch. I was hesitant to buy this, especially because of my not so great experience with the original 3DS. So I am more than happy to say that this New 2DS XL is a great improvement over the original, it loads faster and runs games better than the original. I wasn't a major fan of the 3D aspect so it doesn't bother me that this version doesn't have it, as all physical 3DS + DS games run fine on it. The library of games is large and diverse, from puzzle games, RPG'S,Platformers, etc. Nintendo has done a well enough job allowing backwards compatibility on the digital front, with NES, SNES and even some PS2/Gamecube (Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D and Luigi's Mansion) games being ported/reimagined on this. The sound quality of the system is fine, but I usually use headphones anyway. It does cramp my hands after using it for long periods of time, but I had this issue for all DS'S- so I guess its a thing (Hey at least they're consistent). There is now a slot that covers up the cartridge as well as the MICRO SD CARD. While annoying at first, it actually helped in terms of avoiding dust going into the cartridge slot. Weirdly enough it feels as if I'm playing on a higher quality version of the DS light (one of the original versions of the DS). The new C-Stick is fine, but not great and the new shoulder buttons are awkwardly placed. The touchscreen is as responsive- so the usual. Now for the major downsides, considering the standard for video game graphics nowadays, it seems a bit odd that this only has 400x240 pixel resolution, especially notable since the mobile gaming has been doing 1080p for years, now towards 4K support. Graphics don't mean everything, of course, but it is something worth noting for new buyers/rebuyers. I also bring into question the longevity of this machine, with the Switch on the up and up. Nintendo has been putting more focus towards that, so don't expect a bunch of new games for The 3DS in years to come. While I did bring praise to the 3DS'S backwards compatibility, it's a shame that there isn't any Gameboy Advance support- again this will probably be a thing that the Switch will remedy. In terms of the of the physical machine, it feels like it could just snap any second (the click it makes doesn't help) but the colour scheme is nice (got the orange one, cause it reminded me of BB-8). The stylus is also laughably small in this rendition which is odd considering this hasn't ever been an issue for other DS's; To my knowledge, even the original 3DS had an extendable stylus- so what's the excuse for this one.Overall, while this system does have flaws, its worth buying IF you don't care/like the 3D aspect, but would like some higher quality portable gaming. However as mentioned before, The Nintendo Switch may be better worth your time (and money) if you want a handheld system for the current age.

After 10 or so years I decided to upgrade my now very old DSi. In some ways the 2ds XL is superior in others it's quite a lot worse. The number of available games is great on the 2ds, the home screen and software in general is a huge step forwards. However, the case design leaves a lot to be desired:1. It feels a lot cheaper than the DSi. The DSi (at least the metallic blue one I have) felt premium, it has a nice soft matte finish. The 2ds XL feels a lot more plasticy and less rigid overall.2. The hinge being on the outside adds a lot of space for what seems like a huge downgrade. The 2ds XL feels clunky when you open it and regardless of where you place the screen it wobbles slightly while gaming. There's only a couple of positions the screen stops at and the clicking noise it makes sounds like something is broken. In comparison the DSi hinge was stiff so you could place it at any angle and have it stay there without wobbling.3. The buttons and D-Pad are a lot more "clicky" which some may prefer but pressing them is louder and cheap feeling.4. What was wrong with loading the cartridges from the top? It was quick, easy and you could do it with the screen up. The new design hides the cartridges behind a movable flap at the bottom. For me it is a lot less convenient as you need fingers to hold the flap back. Not a major problem but it seems like they set out to fix a problem that didn't exist.5. The stylus. The console is bigger than the DSi, the DS Lite was smaller and had a SLOT-2 port taking up a lot of space and they managed to fit a decent sized stylus. Not only is the stylus too short, it's in an awkward position. For right handed people, the stylus on the right of the console made it easy to remove and replace. At the front it's a lot more awkward.I managed to get a pack of 5 metal telescopic styluses that fit in the slot on ebay for £2.99.. the poor stylus shows that Nintendo were watching every penny when designing this which is a shame as I'd have happily paid a bit more for a console with a bit more of a premium feel. It's a great little console and I really enjoy playing it but the build quality and obvious cost cutting lose it a star.

This little handheld has been a constant distraction since it turned up last week.Right out of the box it was easy to set up and get everything going.I have used my Girlfriends 2DS previously (of which this is far superior), but apart from that, this is my first Nintendo handheld since the original gameboy (which i still have).First the good parts, It has an incredibly intuitive button layout and general ergonomics are excellent. I have put in a fair few 4+ hour sessions on it with not hand or wrist ache (something I cannot say about the 2DS).The screen is bright and the touch screen very responsive.Overall build quality is good, if not stellar. There is some wobbling on the screen but not a disconcerting amount and the whole thing certainly does not feel like it is going to fall apart any time soon. Many people have commented on the resolution of the screen. Lets get this straight, it is no where near 720p or 1080p, however, for the purpose of the types and scale of games available on the system, it is acceptable with colours being particularly good, and this is from someone who games on a 1440p ips gaming monitor on PC, so if it passes my snob tests its should be ok for most ;).Battery life is very good, goes easily 4-5 hours with volume on half/quarter and brightness settings on 4.Now the not so good part. The moving of the speakers to the bottom is a mistake, as they can be covered up, thankfully i have tiny hands (i'll come back to this in a bit) so it is not as much of a problem for me, however, if you have massive spade hand you may find yourself having to re position them just to have sound. The stylus is very small, this is not too much of a problem for me due to the aforementioned midget digits, however, to others it may seem way too small and is very easy to lose. The black/turquoise version I got is a fingerprint magnet, within minutes it looked very smeary on both the case and around the controllers. However, in the grand scheme of things, considering the very reasonable price, the amount and quality of games available and the potential portability and battery life, this is a great purchase!

Haven't owned a Nintendo console for nearly ten years. The 3ds got released and I didn't really think anything of it. Owned a vita and was very happy with it. The only thing I missed was Monster Hunter since it jumped ship from Sony to Nintendo.I decided, at long last, to buy myself this new model. Cheaper, lighter and with all the important capabilities of the new 3ds, it looked like a good deal.I've actually been very impressed with it. I knew going in (and you should too) that the screens in the system were likely to be of a lower quality to what I'm used to with phones these days, and knowing Nintendo, likely TN. I knew it might have a lower build quality to the other main 3ds'.I knew it might have little quirks or faults. But all in all, I've very much enjoyed owning it. The system itself has no major faults and seems to be put together very well, despite being made of possibly worse materials. However this means it is much lighter, and I found this very useful for long sessions. The face buttons are clicky and tactile, the touchpad is very responsive, it's just a very good gaming experience. The screens are better than I expected, with ample brightness, and after having played a lot of hours on it, good enough resolution. Of course it looks a little blocky at times, but the trade-off is better battery life and performance overall. The operating system is light and easy to use and is integrated fantastically well. Hopping from game to web browser for instance takes seconds. However you do have to close games when other larger applications are opened, unlike your modern smartphone. But that's to be expected. All in all I've had a brilliant time with this system. It's a budget version of a 3ds XL, and that was exactly what I was after. It does everything it should and is the best bare basics for a good experience. If you've never played a 3ds before, I would probably say to get this as it's a solid purchase. Not the best 3ds money can buy, but certainly the best entry into the family.

You generally know what you're getting with Nintendo. Although I want to state it in case someone is looking at video game systems for the first time. Nintendo is the most kid friendly of all the console manufacturers. The majority of the titles are playable by 6 years and up as there is no blood or violence (other than cartoon, jump on their head to defeat them kind of violence). Nothing you see from PlayStation or Xbox to draw in the mature crowds are seen from Nintendo generally. Most Nintendo games are self made titles which ensures you get quality and familiar characters that kids love.My son is 6 and if you're looking at this console for a similar age I'd recommend getting it.I've seen it help with his motor skills, hand eye coordination and problem solving abilities. Also the 3d pop out the screen effects are left out of this version of the console (which Nintendo warn not to let young players use at it can damage their vision) . All games are still playable without this feature so not missing out on anything. Titles suitable for young kids: Mario games would be a good place to start. I use websites to check the general consensus for the age of games and if they're worth getting before buying.I removed a star for a few reasons: from the back ours looks like the screen is misaligned which I've shown in the second picture, it only comes with a 2GB memory card which is pretty poor and the battery life isn't ideal. They could have made the console a little chunkier to fit in a more appropriate battery capacity. All in all this is the best console for young and casual gamers (really unusual aternative titles are available like brain training, cooking games and try professor layton for a good detective game). My son can't stop talking about Mario and thinks Bowser should stop stealing princess peach's and get a wife of his own species. So I think he recommends getting this console too.Click helpful if my review was useful to you. ?

Nintendo 2DS XLThe nintendo 2ds xl is the newest hardware from nintendo and there 3ds family. with nintendo 2ds xl the handheld only plays games in 2d but still has all the capabilities of the new nintendo 3ds and 3ds xl including the new second analogue C-stick but in more compact design and is also cheaper alternative to both the 3ds and 3ds xl.DESIGNThe nintendo 2ds xl comes in a clamshell design weighing at 260g and is made of plastic and has a rubber texture on top of the lid, on the top of the device it now has the new ZR/ZL buttons as well as the L/R buttons, on the back is two cameras, then opening up the 2ds xl you see the bigger 4.88inch screens from the old 3.53inch screen on the 2ds.On the bottom you see the front facing camera now on the hinge of the device and then you have the 4.18inch touch screen with all the usual button placements and the new C-stick, on the left side of the device is the volume slider on the bottom you have the speakers on both corners and then there is a flap now which is where the game cartridge slot and microSD card can be found, past that is the headphone jack and stylus and the power button with the LED lights next to that.My VerdictI've used the 2ds xl for a week now and it feels really nice in the hands and it's so light weight that it's easy to carry around in your pocket or bag, the battery life isn't the longest lasting shorter then the new 3ds XL and the screen brightness isn't so good also the stylus is smaller now I just don't know why they couldn't keep it the same size, what I do like is the flap that hides the cartridge slot and will stop your games from flying out also now you can easily take the microsd card out of the system, I also noticed that the games load quicker then on the new 3ds xl. Anyone that's looking to buy a 2ds xl or 3ds xl I think should pick the 2ds xl cause it does everything the new 3ds xl but just doesn't have 3d but it's cheaper. My Rating: 8.5/10

This is such a good console! I got it as a Christmas present for myself and as a up-grade from my Original 3DS XL which is starting to feel its age. I'm so impressed with it! The black and blue colour combo is stunning and compliments itself really well. The screens are really clear and really good quality and speed wise...its really fast! I have currently tested out Mario Kart 7, Animal Crossing New Leaf, Zelda Ocarina of Time, Nintendogs and Cats and Ultra Moon, Pokemon Platinum and Pokemon X. All of these games load up nice and quick, especially Ultra Moon (it doesn't have that stupid 'please wait' message when you close the game down anymore!). The sound is also of really good quality, even on DS games. The buttons are really responsive and I love the fact that both the game cartridge and the micro SD card are protected at the bottom of the system and easy to get to (no worries about accidentally popping out my game or dreading taking the system apart to get to the SD card anymore - should I need to). I haven't got any games that require the C-stick so I haven't been able to test that out yet. I also really like the fact that you have to switch on the internet of the system within the system itself and not on a slider. The delivery was also nice and quick. All in all, I'm really happy with my new system and have already done the system transfer from my Original 3DS XL and have made my 2DS XL my main console. Almost forgot to mention, it's really comfortable to hold. I have small hands myself and my previous console would start to feel really heavy after a few hours of gaming. The 2DS XL fits really nicely into my small hands and definitely seems to be lighter than the Original 3DS XL.

[In this review, "New Nintendo 2DS XL" is informally shortened to "2DS XL", not to be confused with the original 2DS]Nintendo's latest handheld is a beautiful piece of technology. The design is visually appealing and the layout of the device is a massive improvement over the original 3DS. It's impossible to accidentally eject the game card whilst playing, as it is now covered up. You are less likely to accidentally press the power button, which has been relocated to the bottom of the console. For left-handed people, the second circlepad is a god-send. Everything feels firmer and more sturdy than it did on the 3DS. The 2DS XL also has Amiibo support built in, which is handy. All in all it is a massive improvement over the 3DS and the original 2DS (which was ugly and bulky).Unfortunately, the bigger screens do NOT mean higher resolution. While the screens are quite a bit larger than the 3DS, the resolution is the same, which results in ugly stretched pixels, lowering the quality of the graphics. There is a transfer utility built into both the 3DS and the New 2DS XL that allows you to move data from your old console to the new one, at the expense of formatting the old console, which raises another gripe. The capacity of the pre-installed Micro SD card is ridiculously small - much too small to hold a gaming library. I bought the 2DS XL as a cost-effective replacement for my dying 3DS (the New 2DS XL is cheaper than the New 3DS) and found myself unable to transfer all of my 3DS games due to the smaller size of the storage device. I feel like this was corner-cutting on Nintendo's behalf. All in all, though, it is a nifty handheld gaming console.

My thoughts from having used this for a week are -- Build quality is much better than expected - I was a little hesitant thinking it may feel cheap but it feels light yet sturdy. I particularly like the flap which keeps the games covered.- It's comfortable to use for long periods - this was the big test and it passed it easily. The screens are also perfectly fine, not the best panels used but I've no complaints- Battery life is good - I'm getting 5-6 hours on brightness setting 3 with wi-fi enabled- It has all the power of the 'New' series - meaning you can play SNES games (not possible on regular 2DS), some games gain some extra performance and there are even a few 'New' exclusive games- it comes with a charger! Not a huge deal but the New 3DS XL didn't so it's nice to have it included- the memory card is easily accessible so it can be replaced with a larger one if preferredThe only thing I would have preferred to be like the other 3DS models is the stylus. It's a little on the small side but it's been usable when needed.I was on the fence with buying this as the 2DS was also an option at £75 or so but it has smaller screens, doesn't have the extra performance and didn't feel as comfortable. I fully recommended the New 2DS XL especially as 1) the New 3DS has been discontinued 2) it's £50 cheaper than the New 3DS XL and 3) the reasons above!I hope you found the review helpful.

I love playing Nintendo games again like I would have done as a child. The quality of the product is great and Mario kart is so much fun. The only thing I dislike in comparison to the older DS models or even the 3DS is that the stylus is shorter than some of the older models and the power button on the lower edge is not as easy to push as it was when it was a slide switch or just a button on the lower internal front face. The new 2DS and DS models in general cannot use the GBA cartridges as the old DS models could and the only way to play the old cartridge games is to buy the games via the Nintendo store for download (select games are available but not all). They can however use all forms of the modern SD card style games including 3DS and older DS style cards which is great. I also like that they have gone back to the oystel style closing mechanism as opposed to the old 2DS style which was a large static unfoldable block. One thing I would recommend is buying a larger micro SD card for downloadable game storage as the included 4GB is too small to hold multiple games (IMPORTANT: THE DS IS ONLY COMPATIBLE WITH MICRO SD CARDS UP TO 32 GB IN SIZE) and if you wish to transfer data between micro SD cards the pc transfer is only able to work with PCs running Windows 8 or earlier (WINDOWS 10 DOESN'T WORK) although you could just store multiple SD cards in a DS case.

Edit - got another one for the kids!My favourite Nintendo handheld still!I like the 3DS games but I don't care for the 3D effect. If this sounds like you then this is the best console to get. I got the original 2DS as soon as it came out and I was very happy with it. Now the Big Brother has arrived and it's bigger and has all the extra controls (Bumper buttons and right hand hat stick).Feels great in the hand, build quality of the good high Nintendo standards. The XL series has a large screen without adding any resolution so be prepared to SEE the pixels, it has a nice large screen but it's not a modern mobile phone with ultra high-dpi. You see the same number of pixels... bigger. As long as you are prepared for this you will have no issues. This one has built-in Stereo speakers which actually makes is possible to play without headphones, the original 2DS has only a mono speaker which was a strange cost-cutting choice imho, ever since the original DS came out no hand-held had a mono speaker (the last one with mono speaker was GameBoy Advance SP).So all in all this is a better console than 2DS in every regard, so it's just a question of the price difference. I think it is well worth it, especially if you can find it on a sale. I have played with every single Nintendo hand-held since the original GameBoy. This one is easily my new favourite.

I brought this for my Pokémon obsessed 7 year old for his upcoming birthday.I have been in two minds about buying one for some time as he has the original 2ds and I didn't think there would be much of a difference but I was seriously wrong! I received it today and have just taken it out of the box. This newer version completely blows its predecessor out of the water in every single way. The screens are much larger, it's got a lovely smooth and sleek design. The colour and quality of the screens are miles more superior. I was a bit worried that it would have a cheap and nasty feel to it and that the hinge would be wobbly but I don't feel either of those are an issue, feels solid and sturdy to me.The sound quality and volume is good and clear and fully adjustable (thankfully!)The Pikachu design itself is just lovely, so cute and the colours are very bright and attractive. The menus are clear and easy to navigate as well as being very nicely touch responsive instead of slow and buggy. Setting it up was super quick and easy as well. I cannot comment on game play as of yet but so far it ticks all of the boxes for me. I know my son is going to be over the moon with it. Thank you Amazon!

Having owned quite a few Nintendo consoles over the years I have to say I had drifted away from them.Whilst having an internet shopping browse I stumbled across the New (ish) 2DS XL being advertised. I then read some reviews and before I knew it had placed an order..!I enjoyed my previous 3DS XL and was initially wowed by the 3d effect but as for so many I found it strained my eyes and head slightly after a while and had to be held at just the right angle etc which became tedious. It was also a bit heavy in arthritic hands after some play time.Having agonised over which colour to go for ( opted for black / blue ) I hit the ' Buy it Now ' button and next day it arrived...excellent..!Really pleased with it - it looks good and feels well made, solid joints and no silly wobbles. Finger print proof upper surface. Fairly light and a neat design but with large screens - I would agree with others and say its my favourite DS console to date.Only slight niggle at the mo is the short stylus but getting used to it - although it has effected my scores in some games...! Well that's my excuse anyway...Overall I am really rather chuffed with my new toy even if I am in my early fifties...!!

The product came as listed; boxed, Mario Kart 7 installed, excellent condition. The only mark I found on it was a little scratch in the top left corner of the upper screen ( not over where the game shows ) and its not noticeable unless you move it in a certain position and look for it. One other small issue I’ve noticed is that the B button, although it works, if you release it a very small amount with your finger, it will stop registering while the button is still held down. May require a fix one day further down the line, but currently it’s not an issue and many wouldn’t even notice.Screens besides what I mentioned above are immaculate. No problem with the system itself.Runs perfect. The seller was very communicative and helpful. He even sent me some used casing for the outside of the console and a used case for the console to go in to minimise chance of damaging. All in all, I wanted to pay more money for a better condition console and I do believe that’s what I have got. In a sea of used 2DS XL consoles for sale, this was probably my best bet at getting one as close to new as possible.

Went for this colourscheme because it was definitely the best in the bunch, but Tomodashi life is an abomination - I uninstalled it within several minutes. However, the console itself is AMAZING. I have wanted to update my original DS for some time, but never did so mainly because all the 3DS models are way too heavy, which hurts my hands. This gives me a similarly large console with a similar battery life. The battery life itself is extremely impressive. I played an emulated SNES game for nearly 6 hours yesterday with the WiFi on and birghtness on 4 out of 5, and was not even halfway down my battery. The ability to emulate games was the other big draw: I will be able to play games from SNES to gameboy advanced,ds and 3DS, all the titles I was never able to access, all on this one tiny machine.I am also happy with Nintendo handling privacy. You can use the device without making an account if you want to, and you are being prompted to opt out/turn off any services that use your data. Big thumbs up, this makes me happy.I could not be happier. Worth every penny.
