I’ve been using Netgear’s range of unmanaged switches for years now, starting with an FS105 back when all I wanted was a ‘splitter’ for the three devices in my hifi/TV rack using one Homeplug to bring the Ethernet downstairs from my Virgin router upstairs. Incidentally, don’t be scared by the use of the word “unmanaged” – it just means you can set them and forget them like a household-mains ganged adapter, just brushing off the dust bunnies from time to time! Then we moved to a house which had been wired for Ethernet (oh heaven!) to suit the previous owner’s need to run a business from home. I didn’t use ALL of his sockets, but opted to buy a 16-port Netgear switch, this being the biggest that DIDN’T need a fan,and made sure that there was at least one port in every room, some have two. Thus, the airing cupboard doubles as a ‘server room’ with the 16-port job quietly doing what it does, i.e. taking one feed from the outside world via the broadband modem, and disseminating data to the rest of the house. As with mains plug points, you can NEVER have enough, and so it seems I also can never have a big enough switch when it comes to my hifi/TV rack. Hence I’ve pensioned-off the 5-port in favour of this 8-port.You have to bear in mind that you use up a port just by needing to connect the switch to the outside world, so the 5-port only gives access to four bits of kit, and the 8-port seven. As it happens, I now have a need for 6 ports, so the 8-port is a nice-to-have with even the luxury of a spare outlet. Why so many needed for a mere TV table?Well, two set-top boxes, a DVD player, a TV, a Brennan B2 music device and one of those gadgets that needs broadband to give me a full mobile signal out here in the sticks, only the TV having the alternative of wifi, that’s why! I was previously using a messy lash-up involving using all four of the rear ports of the BT Home Hub to feed a) the 5-port switch and b) three of the devices I’ve just listed. This was ugly with cables everywhere and limited my placement of the BT Hub to being on the floor with a shed-load of cables hanging off the back. With the 8-port, the hub can now be stationed high up and away from radiators and other metalwork, improving my wifi signal in the process. There are also a lot less cable, well, on show at least. It pays not to look behind the telly though! That’s the ‘why?’, now for the how.All of these switches have been a perfect doddle to install, in fact I’d argue that ‘install’ is too technical a term for something that just feels like a ‘ganged’ adapter for Ethernet cables. You plug them in, turn it on via its AC/DC plug, and heh presto, they’ve all got internet access. There’s no specific pecking order for the main feed, any port will do although as it gets filled it might help to note which one is which. It even takes care of the ‘polarity switching’ should one of the cables be a ‘crossover’ compared to a ‘straight-through’. It’s all done seamlessly with no input from you.Probably our biggest demand placed upon it is when we stream a 4K source from Netflix or Amazon Prime, which it does without so much as a hiccup. All of which is a long-winded way of saying “Need more Ethernet connections? Get one of these. Plug things in, switch it on and enjoy it!”Oh yeah, and don’t forget to brag to your friends how much more superior a proper Ethernet feed is compared to bloody wifi!

I already use NETGEAR GS724T-400EUS ProSAFE 24 Port Gigabit Smart Managed Ethernet Switch which I got as an Amazon "Today's Deal" item and it works well but was disappointed to see that it is quite an old model dating back to 2013 but other than issues trying to get Device View mode to work it has worked well (got it in June 2017).This model also dates back to that era so if you are looking to buy one make sure the price reflects the vintage. This model does have a fan in it (at one end) and is quite noisy, not a problem in a 19" rack or a server room but if in an open office your employees may start to moan.Device view, like my other one can be made to work (but offers little real gain in device management)but only seems to work with Internet Explorer 11 and Java Runtime Version 8 set with the ip address of the device. Also note both of these models feature dual firmware loads, the active version and typically the updated version so you have to make sure you follow the upgrade instructions carefully (no easy option to just upgrade and reboot).Does it work? Well yes, it has 4 x 1000/100/10 network ports and 24 x 10/100 ports and half of these will power Power Over Ethernet Devices.I have my one powering a SNOM 320 VOIP Phone and a 4K H265 Security Camera and both of these according to the management page use less than 5 watts of the 100 available for POE.It supports Green Ethernet mode but when I tried this it made little difference to my ones power consumption (not using many ports) and at the moment powering my 2 x POE gadgets, 3 1G ports and 1 x 100M port it is using just over 10 watts which seems pretty good.Such devices are not very exciting and once setup should require very little attention.

I had bought a Netgear unmanaged 5 port switch a while ago but now needed more ports so bought this 8 port 10/100 unmanaged switch.I did run in to one issue immediately, Amazon delivered to me a previously used item which, after I complained, was returned and replaced the next day.It is a simple case of connecting your cables BEFORE switching the device on (the 8 port does have its own on/off switch at the back whilst the 5 port one didn't); there seems to be some misleading information about how to connect the Ethernet cables as some people say it doesn't matter while some people say it does. I for one know it DOES matter, for this item, the Ethernet cable supplying the internet needs to plug in to port 5 (the included instruction guide shows you this information), the rest of your devices is up to you. I did try to connect the internet supply to other ports and got constantly got disconnected.I have found no loss in speed using 'Ookla Speedtest' (I have fibre broadband) while streaming movies on a PC, gaming on a PS4, a printer being used for a business, a smart TV as well as a NAS all being used together through the switch.Unless I suffer some problems (this review will be updated if I do) then this is a definite 'must buy' to avoid using wi-fi.

I must admit that initially I was not looking for a 10/100 Meg Switch but after paying a visit to the makers website it was listed as only using typically 1 Watt of power which I found a little hard to believe.Anyway, with all ports in use feeding devices on 2 Metre cables that is the case (at first it peaked at 1.4w but then settled back to 1.0w which should cost under £1.50 a year assuming it is on 24/7).This is the first one I have seen with an on/off switch on the back and I can only guess this is to meet the requirements of some regulations, perhaps the EU.Anyway, seeing as it is just as easy to unplug the adapter lead I doubt the switch will ever get moved.Metal construction, normal green LED's which in a bedroom may annoy and comes with screws and wall-plugs should it need to be mounted (has rubber feet fitted also). The eight port version has very similar green credentials should you need the extra flexibility.

Netgear make some superb kit, from routers all the way to switches, like this one. It's quite neat and compact and setup is a breeze. You could run it unmanaged to a degree just plug and play. However the L2 management features allow you to configure the switch to optimise your network. So a bit about the switch. It's 24 port. They are not gigabit ports so evaluate carefully the traffic needs of your network. Secondly half are PoE which is in my opinion one of the primary reasons you would go for this switch. On that note the 12 PoE switches share 100w so make sure if you are using PoE that 100w is enough. In addition there are two dedicated copper/sfp ports. These will be your back haul ports.Management of the switch via the web interface is straightforward.Overall its a solid reliable switch. I've had a similar one in my house looking after the networking to each room and my cctv. Hasn't missed a beat in two years.

Some well seasoned advice - Don't ever connect a device to WiFi if it has an Ethernet Port! In todays modern connected world even a home network can get to quite a considerable size very quickly and you will not regret reserving WiFi connectivity for IPads, IPhones etc which do not readily connect to a wired network. You should deploy a router (this isn't a router BTW) running DHCP to handle IP routing and these little beauties for extending the network. This has a few more ports than its little brother but you still effectively daisy chain devices locating these behind smart TVs to hook in playstation, apple TV,cable TV - also central to CCTV systems - I have one in the loft where I have a high number of camera feeds and my upstairs Bose System connected.

Ordered on Monday, arrived Tuesday.Great unmanaged switch that provides 4 standards based 802.1af POE ports - connected 4 POE SIP IP phones and worked perfectly, while leaving 4 non POE ports available fro PC's.POE only active if POE device plugged in to 1 of 4 the POE ports, so you can use all 8 ports for non POE devices.Note, this is a true switch and not a HUB - so for those looking for a true HUB for packet tracing via something like Wireshark, this is NOT the product. If you are looking for a true HUB, Netgear DS108 or EN104 HUB's are great.

I have this device located in an outbuilding, uplink is via a pair of Zyxel Powerline adapters from the main house, works well with the HD camera (Foscam FI9805E), and acts as a switch for a wireless access point (soon to be replaced with a PoE WAP). I also will be putting another camera in a month or two and also and additional IR lamp, so will update review in a few months when all four PoE ports have been active 24x7 for a few months.

Brilliant, comes with everything you could possibly need, European and UK power leads, brackets to hang off a wall or casing, the correct screws, plastic stick on feet to stop it scuffing and ofcourse the switch itself. Very simple to use and set up, I would highly recommended it, simply follow the instructions on the instructions provided. Does all what I need and more.

If you need to power an IP phone and expand the network connections at a single socket it is overkill, but not expensive overkill. If you need to send it over 200 miles to a warehouse where the staff are not particularly interested in lengthy IT-related set-up issues then it is a cost-effective and straight-forward option. Solid and dependable.

Whilst there is no doubt that this product is excellent, I have nevertheless had the misfortune of it failing after 18 months. Hence my purchase this time of a replacement. I realise that it has a lifetime warranty but it is not worthwhile trying to send the old one back given the low cost of the replacement.

Very good, as all Netgear products are. I know (through experience) that for critical reliability, this is the best quality, and I thoroughly recommend this for long term install-and-forget installations. The components and engineering design within all Netgear products like this are absolute top grade.

A basic switch, unmanaged and without gigabit capability. Well made, and for non-PC / multimedia use, such as security and IoT type devices, the lifetime warranty suggests a better build quality than other plastic switches at pretty much the same price.

5.12.2018

Very good price, delivered well packaged. Nice and compact. So easy to install, as it says, just plug and play. Using for 2 PC's currently, will be adding another soon. Very pleased. Many thanks.

Ultimately ending up replacing this for a 1Gb switch - due to home network traffic. But for a simple under 10 device local data transfer from router/hub network this would be fine. Recommended.
