The overall structure of My Chinese Coach gives a very friendly, fun and productive environment in which to learn Mandarin. Standard Pinyin (as used in Mainland China for teaching its children) is used to provide a pronunciation guide, and certainly the game does not shirk away from teaching its users how to write characters. There are a few gripes that I have about this piece of software, as useful as it is.Firstly, some of the games (I assume relics from other titles in the series) are irrelevant in the Mandarin setting: the word search game, for instance, or the fill in the blanks games test your ability in Pinyin to a very high accuracy, but any serious student of Chinese will tell you that perfect fluency in Pinyin (in particular, what constitutes a Pinyin word, and which letter the tone accent is put on, for instance) is not all that useful: after all, Pinyin should mainly be used to aid your pronunciation, not as a notation system in and of itself.Secondly, some of the tone marks are wrong. Come to think of it, there are a few places where the Pinyin is completely wrong (I can think of one place, for example, where 'bie' is used instead of 'bi'). This might cause some confusion amongst absolute beginners, but I guess is not that big an issue if you know about it.Thirdly, some of the characters are wrong. For instance, in the learning sections for 'family words', the traditional form of a character is used instead of the simplified. Again, this might cause confusion, but is not that big a problem in the long term. For those of you wanting to learn the traditional forms of characters (as used in Hong Kong and Taiwan, as well as in most overseas Chinese communities), this game is sadly lacking: the simplified forms are used throughout, except in the reference. However, as anyone with any fluency in either system of writing will tell you, this is not a great barrier to understanding, and is only slightly more cumbersome than a New Yorker listening to a Mancunian.Overall, however, the game is good. Vocabulary items are introduced in groups of 10 (which is a nice, bite-sized chunk), and you are invited to practise these vocabulary items before taking part in the games that further test your familiarity with new vocabulary items. Games are unlocked along the way by completing more lessons, and you cannot move on from one lesson to the next without convincing the game that you've mastered the current vocabulary. It is an enjoyable game with which to learn a language, and it's perfect for the commute to work in the morning. I've been learning Chinese for three years now, part time, and am using this game as a review of the stuff that I know already, but I am already learning new characters and vocabulary items with it.Nice; good game, but be wary of its faults.

I think this a great idea. They always say that your learning becomes more productive if you're performing actions and being interactive with your learning, rather than sitting in front of a book. This game contains every aspect you would need to learn and become competent in a language, especially a challenging one such as Chinese. The game is structured as follows:!) When you first enter the game, you take a competence test so the game can assess what level you're already at, therefore suiting your needs.2) You can then choose different topics where you'll encounter set vocab lists. You can hear the words, repeat them and record yourself and then compare your recording to the native one.You can then practice writing the characters with the stylus.3) After the lesson, you'll be giving numerous games where you must identify characters with words in a "hit the mole" type game amongst others. You have to achieve a certain number of points before your allowed to progress to the next topic/level. This makes sure your not just "browsing" the section but making sure the information has actually sunk into your long term memory. It also contains a handy dictionary which I didn't know was included so I went out and also purchased a £10 dictionary that I don't really use now since I use the compact one which comes in this game. So don't bother buying an additional dictionary as you won't need it as the one in the game contains a variety of words and is obviously smaller than a paperback one.

I have looked at this game several times and have been but off by the cost. Eventually, i bit the bullet and ordered it.When you play the game for the first time you take an entry test. The game then starts you off from where you are (if you know some already) or the very basic beginnings. Lessons are divided into easy topics - weather, colours, greeting etc. Each lesson comes with games to reinforce the learning, and you have to get each word correct so many times to earn mastery points to move forward. So far i have found a couple of minor errors in the piyin (missing 'de' 'ge' or other measure word) but in saying that if you were in China, people would understand your meaning clear enough for you to get what you need.I studied Mandarin at BLCU, Beijing, and so i play this game for 10-15 mins to reinforce my learning and keep me speaking and thinking in mandarin daily. Having said that, this would have been a great tool when i was a real 'beginner' and the phrasebook/dictionary that is part of the game is really useful. I hope they bring out a version 2 as they have done with the other languages!

I bought this for my girl friend expecting that she would let me use it too. However she finds it so addictive she cannot put it down. She reaches for it first thing in the morning, and plays it last thing at night! So I decided to buy a nintendo ds and another copy of this game!It is the best Chinese learning package that I have come across so far, because it integrates the pinyin, chinese character, and pronounciation so effectively and immediately. The fact that you are writing the characters too, is something that you wouldnt find in any other system. The game is good because it wont let you through to the next lesson until it has judged you have mastered the words from that level.I like the way that your rating gives your equivalent age, starting from baby, then moving onto toddler, pre-schooler etc.A brilliant product and at a very cheap price!

I've been using this product for around 2 months now and I have to say, the results were way above my expectations.I've never tried to learn another language before but picking up and playing this has been great. I found myself using this about once a day and a day and picking it up at a good pace, even using it in the middle of sentences!I would recommend this for people who really want to learn the language, and I mean really want to learn, because you have to keep commited to learn. I've seen China differently thanks to seeing how its language is applied and constructed, an eye-opening experience for me, since I love chinese culture, this is like a new level for me.Anyway, all in all,it's a great piece of technology that will help you in so many ways, better than sitting around doing nothing. :)

I've not used a DS or any other games before but someone recommended my Chinese Coach to help my studies. I have been learning Chinese for 3 years at evening class and have found this game a really useful addition to my studies. It takes me back to the beginning of my studies, but that is good as the revision helps. The 'fading characters' are most helpful, you trace over the character several times before you then have to write it yourself and in the correct stroke order. I can also focus more on tones. I wouldn't use this game to replace my lessons but it certainly helps with my revision and is great to play on the commute to work.I recommend this for all ages and also plan to buy for my niece who is 8 and learning Mandarin.

I cannot recommend this to be the only source of learning Chinese, but it is a nice add on to a course you're having or to play after the course. It teaches you to write the characters quite well and there is a very good dictionary (and a phrase book) included. In my 3DS it doesn't record my voice very well. It's always a really low level. Perhaps that is problem with a 3DS mic, but it's a little annoying. Also the game doesn't tell you what you did wrong so unless you notice it yourself it might get confusing.

I've tried learning Chinese a fair few times now, using books, websites and whatnot, and find this software many orders of magnitude more useful! Fun and easy to understand, its filled me with confidence regarding my ability, not to mention enthusiasm!I would definetly recommend this to other beginners out there

I have had this for a day and having known no chinese before I am learning so much. The good feature on learning is that it pronounces everything clearly (though you must have headphones) and teaches you how to write it. Just a really great learning tool. Better than books by far!
