Humbrol matt varnish. Stir it well to mix the contents with the matting agent, which usually congeals at the bottom of the tinlet. And then stir it again. I usually sit the tin on a central heating radiator to soften the contents prior to stirring it. I always use Humbrol Enamel Thinners to thin it down for brushing or airbrushing. Several thin coats should give your model the desired flat finish. Humbrol is a trusted brand for modellers.

I prefer to work in enamel rather than water based paint. These fit the bill for me.
