I had a secondary internal WD Caviar 1TB drive that developed bad sectors after 3 years. I liked how quiet Caviar Green drives are, so I bought a 2TB replacement from the same family, but it arrived completely non functional. I regarded that as two too many WD failures, so I decided to try another brand. This one is not as quiet as the Caviar Green, but the noise level is low and acceptable, even reassuring. Also the data rate is twice as fast - 50MB/s for a combined read/write, compared to 25MB/s with the old drive. One other thing worth noting is that this drive still uses 512 byte sectors, so using it with XP is no problem, and nor is it a problem if you restore a "misaligned" Acronis partition onto it.

Needs a specific type of motherboard if you want to run this as a boot drive (Although with SSD, you'd be crazy to do that!). Also needs certain versions of Windows - so check compatability is my advice.Runs fast and cool, used as storage. Takes a while to copy data over, got around 90MB/s, although my board is SATA2, not sure if SATA3 would make a difference. Currently pay a bit of a premium, although if space is an issue in your HTPC, recommended. Those HD recordings take up masses of space!

I've been running 2 of these disks in a USB 3 enclosure for about a year now. These disks are not the most quiet out there, but that's not to say they are noisy, no. It's just that in a normal room you'd likely hear them if you listen. Other than that, they are proving to be very reliable so far. The read and write speeds are very good. Overall, highly recommended.

I have given up on the WD Red drives after too many failures. HGST drives seem to have a much better mean time between failures so I bought this one. Performance is good too !. The drive has been used 24/7 for mixed purposes including surveillance so does get a lot of use. No problems so far.

They have been taken over apparently by WD, who have quality issues such as the green star parking issue, this is one of the last proper Hitachi's it seems (I may be wrong, I am just a punter not a geek or IT professional) and its cheap too
