When I left school back in the sixties I started work as an apprentice draughtsman, all of the other guys used Staedtler clutch pencils supplied by the firm and so I as expected followed suit. I am now retired and like many others I took up drawing and painting as a hobby. Naturally I remembered the Staedtler pencils of my youth when thinking about a good drawing implement. I also remembered the knurled metal grip and how uncomfortable it could become after a day's hard use, so I decided to look at other options. I came across Faber Castell's range of TK 9400 Clutch Pencils liked the look of them and bought one to try. I found it extremely comfortable to use and superbly balanced to the point where you forget you are holding them, they simply become an extension of your hand, I now have seven each with a different grade of lead ranging from 2H to 6B. However, one thing I did miss was the built in sharpener of the Staedtler, something the TK 9400 does not have. I then came across Faber Castell's TK-Lead Sharpener for 2 mm diameter leads, something which I now find just as handy as the built in one of the Staedtler. These sharpeners are so neat that I now have two, one with my pencils and another on my key ring, I keep it on one of those hooks used for shopping trolley tokens so it's easy to access when required, at only a couple of quid each including delivery, having a spare is well worth it. I also have five Faber Castell TK-Fine 9715 0.5mm mechanical pencils with leads ranging from 2H to 2B. I find that both sets of pencils complement each other perfectly having used them virtually day in and day out for the past ten years without any problems whatsoever. I hope this information is useful to those looking for a superb range of pencils along with a quality sharpener.

I didn't even know mechanical pencils with this lead size even existed until last week when I watched a video on youtube of someone sketching with one. Having always hated wooden pencils this was a godsend for me. I immediately ordered one and have been trying it out all day.It has all the benefits of a thinner mechanical pencil (you can still draw really thin lines and cross hatch etc easily), and all the benefits of a wooden pencil without ever having to sharpen. You get the added advantage of being able to make the lead as long as you like for shading broad areas without having to get a knife out and chip away most of the wood and end up using up most of the pencil by the time you're finished. My only (minor)complaint is that the pencil itself is a little thin to hold and it does not have an eraser attached on the other end for convenience. If you prefer using thicker pencils then I would recommend getting a 1.4mm Grip Plus by Faber Castell (though it has slightly thinner leads). I've owned one of those pencils for a long time and it has been my all time favourite while sketching because it is very comfortable to hold and easy to control, though the one I own is only 0.7mm.In summary, if you love to sketch and you're a fan of mechanical pencils or don't want the fuss of wooden pencils but still want to shade easily, this pencil is highly recommended. But again, if you prefer holding a thicker pencil, go for a Grip Plus.

This is a beautifully engineered old-school pencil. It is based on an old dependable design, with few flaws. It is solidly built, sports 2mm hard-to-break lead, and comes without a rubber or sharpener (see images). The barrel is slim and easy to grip: teenagers and adults should be able to use it for protracted periods of time without cramps or sore fingers. It should also be usable, though possibly uncomfortable, for younger writers and artists. The 2mm lead will push this pencil into "art" rather than writing duties for many, however, once sharpened, it is suitable for text. As mentioned already the lead does not break easily during use. It can break when the pencil falls, but this is rare: if you're coming from .5mm leads you will think that these leads are unbreakable.Although it is marked HB, this pencil can take harder or softer lead, and I have successfully used 2mm 4B lead in mine.I recommend this pencil for students, artists and writers alike.

This clutch pencil is sleek, sturdy and very easy to maintain.Through my years of sketching I've come across and used lets say about 10 other clutch pencil, by comparison this one beats each one hands down, I'm that pleased with it (Chambers buckle easily and mechanisms warp, this pencil is still top knotch).Overall I recommend this pencil to amateur to seasoned artists aswell as those who still like the write in pencil, it's funny how much praise you can give a writing/drawing instrument but this one certainly deserves it.

From an artists perspective - Faber Castell pencils are among the best.Up until now I've used the traditional wooden type, but I tend to go through more 2b pencils than anything else and so I decided to invest in a 2b clutch pencil and a box of leads. The clutch feels strong/firm and the pencil is nice and light, it feels great to hold too.I'm certainly not going to go back to wooden pencils for my most common leads and I'm now wondering why I had never bought a clutch pencil before.

I really like these pencils. They feel solid and are very nice to use. Most importantly for me is that I can sharpen the leads without breaking them. I got so tired of buying expensive pencils only to find that the leads break off as you sharpen them. With these clutch pencils that is not a problem at all, and you can sharpen them to a finer point. I wouldn't go back to regular pencils now I have discovered these.

A ever lasting pencil right here, does not shorten but only the lead itself, so a pack of leads should also be bought.Able to do everything a wooden pencil can, even sharpen by using the lead sharpener purchased separately making sharp and pointy for fine details.Due to its 2 mm thickness lead its both durable and strong.Recommended for those who write and draw a lot with pencil.

Having spent a worrying amount of time researching pencils I decided to go for this one (surely this is what the internet was invented for). These have been around for years and there is no wonder, it is really nice to write/sketch with. I would recommend buying the mini sharpener, it's so cheap it's virtually free and it fits on a keyring.

Absolutely wicked. I love my new pencil. Been looking for something like this for so long. I used it to finish a recent portrait of singer songwriter Ray LaMontagne. The grip is comfortable and the weight is perfectly balanced. Feels like it was designed for my hand. You can view the result of my work on my Instagram page Fireofthedragons.

I don't normally use a propelling pencil but this is more of a clutch pen with a 2mm replaceable lead that is very nice to use for drawing. Very comfortable to hold and easy to release or retract the lead which has a nice point to it which can be sharpened. Definitely would recommend this and I wonder how I managed without it!

As an artist I use pencils that's stating the obvious I know but get this one.The quality is great don't by cheap ones they are seriously not worth it. Buy the sharpener too. Staedtler Mars Lead Pointer Tub - Sharpener For 2mm Pencil LeadsYou will not regret this purchase I will never use anything else.

This is a class product; really nicely balanced to hold, grips the lead very firmly and the lead is solid, does not break and writes very consistently a good dark tone. I am intending to use this for sketching when needing some detail eg in buildings. Seems just the job.

I found my drawings improved using these pencils. No shortening, constant size helps enormously when starting to learn graphite artistry. I promise that after using one of these pencils you will progress from stick men in quite a short while.
