F1 is back and better than ever BUT it does have a few problems...F1 2017 is a solid outing but is far from perfect, while the career mode has been much improved on compared with 2016 it is only fair you know there are many issues and bugs with certain aspects of the game. There are several different modes and i want to talk about each in turn. I have been playing the game for 5 days now since picking it up at my local midnight launch, so feel i've got a good grasp of the game having experiences everything it has to offer. So career mode first. You get to create your own driver avatar including their gender, face, name, helmet and number. You then get to pick which team you want to start your career at.All teams are unlocked from the start so technically you can go with Ferrari or Mercedes in your rookie season although i wouldn't advise that as the team will expect you to challenge/ win every other race. I strongly advise you go with a lower end team for your first season especially if you plan on setting a higher difficulty AI. Speaking of the difficulty, you now get a sliding bar rather than only a handful of preset difficulties, so now there is a range within each difficulty. The higher the difficulty the more career points and R&D credits you get to spend when you meet your teams targets. Each weekend your team will set you some tests in practice, this will include a track acclimatisation program, tyre wear program, fuel conservation program, qualifying simulation and strategy program. Perfecting each one will give you more R&D credits to spend on car upgrades (talk more about this later), however, they also have an impact when it comes down to your race, if for example you perfect the fuel management program then the team will fuel you short during the race, not exactly a good thing if you’re in an underpowered car. It practically forces you to run the entire race in “lean” engine mode which saves fuel but cuts down on engine power and next to the more difficult AI you won’t stand a chance but it does create more realistic racing. At the start of the season you get the chance to set the length of qualifying each weekend and what race distance you want besides AI difficulty, this can all be changed between weekends should you think the AI is too fast or slow or indeed you want to race longer on your favourite tracks and shorter on the ones you dislike. You can also change what assists you use, like turning traction control off, having manual pitstops (which are much improved compared to 2016) as well as adjusting whether you want the safety car to make an appearance or not. Please note that modifying the AI difficulty and what assists you use will have an impact on your final weekend score.Car wise they all handle better than last year with far more grip and thanks to the wider tyres a lot of corners where you use to have to lift are now flat out, Spain, Silverstone and Spa being three tracks where you notice a difference. You still get the same cutscenes pretty much but now with your own avatar on the podium and your engineer “jeff” is the same from last year. Car and Track graphics are exactly the same as last years game but there has been an improvement with the weather effects and light reflections. I’ve yet to encounter any frame drops or tearing on screen either. You’ll be offered new contracts with different teams during the season as well as be asked to take part in a number of classic races in between races. Now down to three negative points regarding the career mode. Firstly while the R&D tree which covered multiple parts from the engine/Aero/Chassis/Reliability has been well thought through and i appreciate the scale of the tree, the R&D points you get each weekend are stingy to the point of insanity. One single engine upgrade can cost 1000 credits and even when you win a race and meet the teams targets in full you only get 300 credits at the most and to add insult to injury some of the upgrades can fail meaning you have to spend half the cost again to get the part, in my opinion the credits need to be made more generous otherwise people will just get bored trying to compete in lower end teams. I like the fact this time around you can get car failure including the engine, energy store and even the gearbox besides more parts, you are given 4 of each for the whole season so if you wear them all out you have to get another one an incur a grid drop at the next race, that part is cool and means you do have to look after your car and not rag it all the weekend! Second disappointment of career mode is the visual damage engine which is the same as last years game, surely it’s not asking much for total car destruction like in project cars and in real life for that matter rather than only the wheels and front wing being visually destructible? The third gripe with career mode are the AI and their continued lack of intelligence when it comes down to blue flags, they never get out of the way and worse when they collide into you, you go spinning off and their car carries on as if it was on a set of train tracks, you always seem to come off worse when you get tangled up with the AI.Turning to Time Trial mode. This is where you can work on and perfect your car setup on each track during any weather situation you like as well as set your fastest times and compare them with your friends. They’ve made it easier this year to switch to any track and car from any track and car meaning you don’t have to exit to the menu system to switch, i still think the corner cutting system is far too trigger happy and doesn’t take into account places that the drivers use in real life where you wouldn’t gain time and they never get penalised but the game invalidates your lap when you use the same areas. This means in time trial you can’t really push as much as you want too.Classics mode is fantastic! You get to drive 11 classic cars ranging from the 1991 Mclaren MP4/6 all the way to the 2010 Red Bull RB6. If you buy the special limited edition then you get the Mclaren MP4/4 included too. Is it worth it? I would say not unless you’re a die hard Mclaren fan. For me the 2004 Ferrari F2004 is the star of the show. It’s worth buying this game just to hear the engine scream down the straight at Monza and puts the 2017 cars to shame. You get to race the classic cars on all 2017 tracks plus the 4 short tracks, the one at Silverstone is by far the best!Aside from all that you can also go straight in and race any track with any car with whatever settings you like independent of career, so if you get home from work and don’t want to mess around with all the side stuff in career then you can get racing on the grid straight away should you want to.Now to the real bone of contention and the only real reason for knocking a star off. Multiplayer mode! I found it interesting how NONE of the professional reviews of F1 2017 mentioned a single thing about it and now i realise why! It is totally broken to the point where as of 31st of August it is unplayable. Not only are player numbers in their low hundreds but half the time you’ll either be booted out to the menu system after joining a lobby or be instantly disqualified as soon as the race starts regardless of what you do. Other people have complained of their cars getting stuck on the start line and not moving and the penalty system is nothing short of horrific, giving you a straight penalty the very first time you so much as stray over a line, even by accident! Even when you have to use an escape road due to out braking yourself and go between the bollards it still penalises you. So as of right now the online section to the game is borderline unplayable. Sure you may get lucky and find a lobby that works but the chances are after you’ve raced once then problems will start to happen when your lobby gets back to the menu system. The truth is the game shouldn’t have been released with multiplayer in this state and professional reviewers were clearly either paid off in my mind to keep quiet about it or were prevented from testing it out in which case they should have said but none of them did. Multiplayer will be what gives this game longevity so i find it incredible that not even IGN said a single word about multiplayer and then gave the game 8.9/10. So forget playing with your friends for the time being until it’s patched and i will put updates at the bottom of this review when that happens. All that having been said i do like how they now show the server lists which they didn’t do last year. So now you can manually join a populated lobby rather than let the games automatic hopper system find you one (usually the automatic system puts you in an empty lobby)Pros: Improved handling of cars * Deeper and more immersive career mode thanks to the R&D tree which is 4x bigger than last year * Adapt each race weekend or season to your hearts content * Classic cars are back and better than ever * Better spectrum of AI difficulty * Car Failures * Improved weather effects and car reflections * Full Manual Pit stops * Easy switching between cars and tracks in time trial * Short tracks are fun * Online server lists and player progression * online track vote system * Classic event modeCons: Multiplayer is a disaster (as of 29th of August) with lots of bugs, glitches and it’s virtually unplayable on a consistent basis * Damage engine remains the same * AI intelligence remains questionable especially under blue flag conditions * unrealistically slow AI on the formation lap and behind the safety car * Career R&D points are far too stingy and upgrades cost too much by comparison * Trigger happy penalty system in time trial and online * no classic tracks like the 2013 gameVERDICT: Be in no doubt that the career side and classic part of this game are the best that Codemasters have ever done and make this game worthy of you parting with your hard earned cash, i say this as a huge gamer and F1 fan. However, it would be wrong of me or anyone else to rate this game any higher than 4/5. When you add the bugs and glitches together along with the issues i list and the Multiplayer which is totally unplayable right now, anyone that gives the game 5/5 has either been paid to or has never touched the multiplayer section or played any of the past games. I will recommend this game on the assumption that the multiplayer side of the game will be patched within a short space of time but given Codemasters past when it comes down to fixing bugs and glitches in 2015/2016 i wouldn’t be surprised if we are waiting a good few weeks. So to finish, this is the best F1 game to date and i recommend you buy it with the caveat that they fix the multiplayer section, as i stated earlier i will post updates below this as and when they patch the game. RECOMMENDED!Update:2nd September 2017 - Online stability is much improved but still isn't perfect.8th September 2017 - Stability remains hit and miss but better than launch, lots of unsporting racers in lobbies sadly.14th September 2017 - There has been a 1.2GB update to the game, it has fixed a few bugs including the Mclaren engine bug which rendered upgrades as useless but sadly has caused a few other issues. All multiplayer rankings and timings have been reset.21st June 2018 - I stopped playing the game around November 2017 but have recently picked the game up and started to play again, Online issues have mostly been fixed and there seem to be more racers playing than compared to 6 months ago... from what i can gather though there are two main issues that plague this game, first is the online community which is toxic (people that ram you off for no reason) and secondly the penalty system is again a joke.. If you can find this game for around £20 then it's worth picking up but please don't pay more than that!

Finally Codemasters has made a great F1 game. Especially if your an F1 fan. Down to graphics, rules, flags, safety car, VCR, weather effects and they even made the multiplayer a lot better. Brought back multiplayer career mode. Or choose your own track and wait for people to join. Not like last years game when we could only play on certain tracks. Doing the extra races in the old F1 cars for charity events in career mode is a great part of the game. I drove Micheal Schumacher Benetton when he won his first world championship. I totally recommend this F1 game. Well done Codemasters

31.10.2017

Really enjoyable game, as an F1 fan its brilliant some of the details included such as the R&D development and the component wear. While the graphics do leave a fair bit to be desired, and some of the physicals are slightly unusual (pit box entry/exit) and other bits are straight up infuriating (how long it takes to be wheeled into your garage, especially if you just want to make a front wing adjustment/change tyres or fuel). But on the whole it is a very good game that Codemasters are continually improving with small updates. Next years should be even better!

8.10.2017

Codemasters are back to their best. Great game. Very immersive. Best racer of 2017. Beats Forza and Project cars for realism and gameplay. Can become repetitive as the seasons career just keeps going. I wpuld have liked to.have seen wholesale driver changes with team swaps and new teams each year etc but licencing obviously prevents that e.g. Hamilton moving to Ferrari and Jaguar/ Minardi etc as expantion teams with new drivers. This does not deflect from 5 stars as its the best F1 yet. Online is almost perfect too. Minor.matchmaking refinements required.

19.9.2017

Best f1 game in event history.Loving the overhaul on the r&d department. Only concern is that if you start at McLaren for example. Even with all engine developments you will not be up with Mercedes or Ferrari.Need to work at getting ew car development started mid season and working on it so you get a new setup each year. Also make it possible for other drivers to move teams/retire instead of always having te same drivers at the same teamsMaybe include a salary and something to spend it on.Also bring back interviews.

3.9.2017

A good game. The game is enjoyable, the difficultly slider is appreciated as it allows for a good individual challenge. Graphics are good to my eye and the career mode is addictive. The only negatives are some glitches and issues, the only one that has effected my experience is the online issue where all cars are disqualified if a new player joins mid session. Although I expect this will be fixed soon.Overall I would recomend this game

This is a great game. Can't put it down. It's not just F1 2016 with better graphics. They've done great with how the new regulation 2017 cars look, feel, handle etc. The cars feel heavier and have more grip. Of course the graphics have been improved and it's a very pretty game. The Research and development program has been greatly improved and is far for enjoyable. The historic cars are great to drive and there are great events too

21.9.2017

I would have given this 5 stars if only they had added BLUE FLAGS, but for some reason they forgot them! Apart from that this has to be the best F1 they have ever done, largely because the cars now have MORE GRIP. In previous versions (never tried 15 & 16 so don't know how they were) the cars slid around way too much even with new tyres. What I also like is the mini challenges within Practises to help improve the car via R&D.

26.8.2017

Fantastic game! Better than any previous versions! Time trials are super fun and competitive with the ghost car laps of other gamers! Career and multiplayer are spot on!You won't be disappointed in this unless you have no interest in racing games or formula 1!This is a must buy and the best game I've played in a very very long time! Love it!!!

1.2.2018

Better than ant other f1 game. Though sometimes the cut scenes will go on for ages (watching your team analyst take boring phone call which has nothing to do with you is dull to say the least) but the racing is Good, and the car development is good. AI is greatly improved too, noticeable blocking from computer players makes it much more realiatic.

19.9.2017

A peach of a game! More depth from additional programmes in practice mode, the need for fuel saving, component wear, and, as for those additional events with classic cars...And the handling of the new cars themselves makes them a pleasure to drive. All in all a strong simulation with gaming depth. The best F1 game for a very long time.

16.8.2018

I'm a F1 fanatic, so this is right up my street. I'ts brilliant with a Thrustmaster steering wheel but even with a controller is very engaging. I have played the PC version as well, and I have to say that the PC version is easier in terms of controlling the car. Whatever platform you buy it on, it's worth the money.

26.8.2017

It is a good game but so far I haven't seen anything which adds to the 2016 version of the game. Lovely graphics and the driving is spectacular. You cannot skip the cut scenes which is one of the most infuriating things known to man. Save yourself the cash and buy the previous version of the game in my opinion.

24.9.2017

Great racing sim for all motorsport fans. Most impressive for me is how easily adjusted the difficulty settings are, makes finding a level comfortable for you very easy! My only criticisms are that some animations are pretty awful and can ruin what is a pretty immersive experience, especially in the pit lane.
