Use this rack with a 2008 Honda CRV and it is great. The whole rack fastens to the ball hitch with two cupped plates which are tightened together by means of a large bolt. Its pretty easy to drop the rack on to the tow bar then finger tighten the plates together, give it a few quick turns with the supplied spanner and then straighten its alignment, before securing it really tightly. I've used this with three bikes (two of those kids bikes) and covered nearly 250 miles on motorway, B roads and even rutted country lanes with no issues at all. For added safety, there is a additional bolt at the bottom to prevent the plates from separating and there are two straps & cleats (hooks)which tighten around the boot door to stop any toppling.Without the two straps in place, the rack (& bikes) can be tilted away from the car to roughly 45 degrees. Particularly handy if you travel with animals in the boot. As another safety feature, the rack will not tilt beyond this 45 degree max angle, so the whole rack would have to swivel/slip on the ball hitch to allow the bikes to hit the ground. If securely tightened, the bikes hang well off the deck allowing you to access the boot from either side.The bikes themselves are held in position by a combination of thick rubber straps which loop over the bike's frame and a nylon strap which is weaved through the wheels, forks etc and tightens back to main unit. (I throw on a few additional bungee cords, out of habit, but I doubt if they really add much beyond peace of mind). One word of warning for any tow back rack of this design, is that they work best with adult sized bikes. The additional clearance within the frame, means its easy to position them up and over the outer mounts. With the smaller framed kids bikes, there's a lot of wiggling involved and if your bike doesn't have the normal triangular frame with a (near) horizontal top tube then you may be best to consider a different type of rack where the bikes don't hang. It is also possible to unscrew and remove any of the mounts, so if you want to take three bikes you can remove the outer most straps to make life a little easier.Overall, I am well pleased with this purchase. Its well designed, well made, has a number of good features and will hopefully serve me well over the forth coming years. If you are considering one, I would recommend it. But please allow yourself a few hours of assembly time. The supplied instructions are not great and most of system needs bolted or screwed together.

Bought this product and we are very pleased with it. It arrived early and in a sealed box. We used it for a long trip to carry out bikes (x 4) and all went well.The product is very good and reliable. I will highly recommend.

Most bike racks are very much more expensive, so I was concerned that this one might prove inferior.It was not, and does everything it should do.
