Ernie' Ball (born Sherwood Roland Ball) was a musician and guitar seller hailing from California. Although he passed away in 2004, Ball's musical accessories are still sold across the globe, and renowned not only for their quality, but also for their affordability. The Ernie Ball brand is perhaps most famous for its Super, Extra, and Regular Slinky Strings, and today i'm taking a look at the latter. Legend has it that Slinky strings were developed in the 60's when Mr Ball noticed that the budding rock n' roll musicians of the day were having difficulty playing the third string of their guitars. At the time, the third string was typically of a wound construction and therefore thicker than necessary.Basically, Ball revolutionised guitar strings by bringing a thinner gauge across the range, making them easier to bend and ultimately more compatible with the genre of music that the decade was most famous for.Constructed from nickel-plated steel (which has become the norm for Rock music), the strings are of the following gauges - 010 (top E), .013 (A), .017 (D), .026 (G), .036 (B), and .046 (bottom E). The strings are thicker than both Extra and Super Slinky, but still remain easy to bend and a pleasure to play. I find that the strings are light to the touch and are better to strum with than Super Slinkys. Like the other Ernie Ball strings that I have used in the past, the strings return a bright and clear sound with a pleasant tone. In my personal experience i've found that Regular Slinky strings last a long time, with the top E string (notorious for snapping first), time and time again surprising me with its longevity. In terms of value for money, even though they are more expensive, Ernie Ball strings last a lot longer than the ultra cheap strings from third-party brands which you can pick up on eBay. I think the impressive lifespan of Regular Slinkys comes from the fact that they're made from high quality materials, or "the finest materials around", if you are to believe the blurb on the website.Overall, I would highly recommend these excellent guitar strings as affordable and long lasting bits 'o metal. They're easy to play (whether you're a picker or a strummer), and will suit both novices and pros alike. You only need to look at the list of guitarists who have used these strings (Slash, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Steve Vai to name but a few) to know that you're dealing with a quality product.

Hey all. I'll start by saying these are good strings BUT, if you're used to you're strings being quite "slinky" then these are not for you.I usually play Ernie Ball Rock n' roll classics which I find have a fantastic amount of bend to them but not too much to jepordise you're tuning. I wanted to beef out my tone a bit as I'm the only guitarist in my band but i didn't want to lose tonality in the solos, these seem like a perfect match right? Well these do what they say BUT if like me you use alot of tremelo on your D string then don't go for these, the top (thickiest strings), E, A, D in this pack come extremely tight and you get little to none flexibility out of them. The G,B and the E do have great flexibility like most slinky packs. All I'm saying is, be aware that if, like me you use a lot of "thicker string vibrato" (as i like to call it) you will have to sacrifice it in order to use these strings. However, if you are used to using tight strings then these are for you. You get to keep that nice tightness for all the rythem sections and then with these strings you get some nice flexibility when you break into a solo.Simply put, the top E, A, D (thickest) are quite tight.4 stars because they have absolutely nothing wrong with them, great shipping time and great price they just weren't for me!

I am a working musician and I use several electric guitars in different tunings. Owing to a busy work schedule my guitars take a lot of punishment. I get through a lot of strings. When using guitars in regular EADGBE tuning, I found that strings would break frequently and sustain was limited when using lighter gauge sets. Consequently I have tried almost every recognised brand of strings to resolve these issues and Ernie Ball Hybrids have proved to be the best in terms of lifespan and sound quality. The customized 9-46 gauges are perfect. The thicker strings have sustain and durability, whilst the lighter gauge strings allow for plenty of noodling and dexterity in lead playing - The unwound strings are light enough to ensure you don't get blisters. This happy combination means your guitar will be reliable whether you are playing violent punk or subtle jazz standards. The strings remain nice and bright for a good few weeks of average use. When experimenting with other makes I was surprised to learn that higher priced strings often had shorter lifespans. Do not be fooled by celebrity endorsements or bold claims of scientific innovation. In standard tuning, these affordable Ernie Ball Hybrids function at a higher level to everything else I have tried.

So far so good, even if they are now just starting to show some corrosion after 5 days (I barely sweat). I've used D'addario the most over the past 10 years or so but fancied a change after buying a new guitar that has a longer scale length at 26.5".I tune to Drop A (B standard, with a dropped low string). For most this might be a little loose but I have a soft-ish touch. The only problem I have with this set is the plain 'G' or 3rd string and that is why I gave them 4 stars. It sounds quite bad and has a lot of inharmonicity (I think that's the word, where the harmonics just sound bad/out of tune. Hard to explain.Like when you play really high up on low strings and it sounds like a dull piano). On my standard scale guitars at the same tuning I use the D'addario Light Baritone set that have a wound 3rd, which sounds great. So I will pick up a single wound 3rd string for now but after this I might pick up a pack of GHS Boomers DYM 13-56 or the Dunlop set of the same gauge (13-56 with wound 3rd).Great for the price, bright, punchy sound, but this set desperately needs a wound 3rd and I'm a little surprised how fast they're corroding, even if it is only slightly.

Most of these reviews are for other guages, so to be clear I'm writing about the 12 to 56 nickel wound set.Moving from 11s (still ernies) there is a noticeable difference in tone. There is much more bottom end. This could mean that for a Les Paul they might be too muddy sounding, but for my strat they sound very nice; powerful and warm. This will be in part due to the fact that I have tuned down half a step from standard to make bends easier. As for bends, unless you have very strong hands you will struggle. I bend a lot and am finding the transition difficult. This is obviously not the strings fault, to be clear, but my own for using such heavy strings. However, the gain in tone makes the change worth it,now to wait for my hands to strengthen. In short, these are great strings, though not for everyone. I suspect that some of the reviews claiming broken strings are not for this set (as they are so heavy) or faults of the guitars bridge or nut. Oh, also make sure you have to ability to cut new nut slots or get someone else to do it for you, as these strings are thicker than normal they won't fit in a nut cut for 10s.

I have a Gibson Les Paul that had been problematic regarding tuning stability and low E fret buzz. My string of choice was always 10-46. No amount of tweaking its set up remedied the problems. I acquired a set of skinny top, heavy bottom strings from my son as a birthday present. I popped them on as I needed a fresh set of strings and had no alternative choice at the time. This string guage has completely transformed my Les Paul. The buzz has gone, the tuning is accurate and stable and the tone is woody and round. The skinny bottom end means that I can play single note runs with relative ease and the heavy bottom end allows me to riff and play power chords without any detuning or buzzing and,in my opinion, translates into enhanced and superior tone. Also, I have noted that, for me, Ernie Balls seem to be more resistant to breakages and stay bright and articulate for at least as long as similar or more expensive competitors. Highly recommended.

This review goes hand in hand with a SUPER SLINKY review and relates to why I needed this packet. (See Point 3)I'd never re-strung a guitar before so armed with a couple of packets of Slinky strings and you tube I had a go.Three lessons. The first is do one string at a time. (apparently the guitar can literally change shape if you take all the tension off the neck in one go)The second is DON'T put it through the key hole first. (This cuts the string .... thankfully I bought two packets)The last lessons is know the diameter of the strings you currently have on there. This last reason is important as Super Slinky are different from Slinky in that they are slightly thinner strings...so in turn youneed to depress the strings a little firmer to make them hit the fretts or you need to lower the bridge to bring the sting height down. Either way once you know what strings suit your bridge height and play style I suggest you stick to them.

I've got a load of guitars, and for some reason I couldn't figure my Fender Jaguar was falling to the back of the crowd. It didn't have the bite of the tele, the power of the Les Paul, or the resonance of the ES335. I rarely played itluckily, I snapped a string, and realised I hadn't restrung it in some time. I wondered what afficianado players recommended for the jaguar, and saw 11s, and in turn a few people who played my sort of stuff recommended Power SlinkysI'd always just taken the guitar store's recommended strings before, but ordered online for a change, and am delighted I did. Apart from being cheaper, and saving me a trip, these strings make me feel like I have a new guitar ahead of the thin weedy sound I had before. There's a lot of guts in there, but they're still light enough for all the expressive blues bends I playto summarise - delighted, and buying more for my telecaster

This review is of Ernie Ball’s ‘Super Slinky’ strings for electric guitar. The gauges are: 9, 11, 16, 24, 32, 42. The G (gauge 16) is single-strand nickel-plated steel, like the B and top E, so light and bendable.I play a Fender Strat for which these ‘Super Slinky’ strings are near-perfect: they’re easy to fit, the top strings bend well without much left-hand effort and they’re great for playing power chords. A good tip is to use a light, bendy plectrum, which is pretty much essential for the top E (gauge 9).One caution: these strings are very stretchy and take a few hours to ‘bed in’ during which they go out of tune easily, especially the top two, so best not to fit them immediately prior to a performance. Also if you’re an aggressive player you may occasionally snap one of the top three, so keep spares.

Decent strings for anyone looking to tune lower then D. For me theses are great on a 25.5 scale in Drop C# or lower. I personally use them mostly with Drop C# and C# G# C# F# G# C# (Dadgad half a step down) I wouldn't go any lower then a B Tuning with these but that's just because I prefer a very high tension.I'd actually still prefer a heavier gauge just for my Low C#. Perhaps a 64 or 65. But I have to deal with the 62's that come in this pack which is Just a minor personal preference with Tension.I think most people don't like alot of tension on their strings so maybe you wouldn't have that issue.C# is my sweet spot tuning for these bad bois.I'm sure if you use these on a baritone scale you could tune alot lower. For a Les Paul these could be handy for tunings from D through to C.

These strings work perfectly if you want to set up your guitar for some seriously low tunings. I currently have mine in drop B and these give a very beefy tone that suits the style of music associated with this tuning perfectly. They have a nice sound to them and even though they are Ernie Balls I am very impressed with the set. They appear to be durable and should last a good while.A point for anyone considering putting these on your guitar though, be warned that as these strings are a lot thicker than normal ones, you do have to set the guitar up so that you don't break the neck with the added tension - you can do this either by taking it to a specialist which costs money or, if you are able to,by doing it yourself (which actually isn't too hard, but you do risk damaging your guitar).

I have an Epiphone G400 [SG style], which I haven't re-strung in the four years since purchasing. The original strings were size 10 and pretty tough.I brought these because I wanted to bend strings easily and use a lighter left hand. From this point of view, they are a success. Easy to install (even for a first-timer) and very smooth (almost too smooth) to the touch. My playing improved pretty much instantly. On the down-side, they appear to come out of tune quite easily, although this could be related to my beginners re-stringing technique. They also have a very buzzy sound on the guitar (when un-amped) compared to my previous strings - but I can imagine that lighter, more bendy strings would move more than the tough ba'stads I had on previously

I've been a committed Super Slinky user .009-.042's, out of habit really, for years. On a whim, I decided to give these a go. Ten minutes of practice and your fingers hardly notice the difference, but blimey! Your ears do.You may need to tweak your truss rod a tiny amount, depending on how your guitar is currently set up. I also had to adjust the intonation a minuscule amount (only on the bottom E and G strings, and I mean minuscule, I could've left it). But, my guitar, an SG, now sounds and plays like it's wearing the strings that were made for it.I could wax on about how tonally great they are, and how if you want a drop D or C there's no better choice, but strings are all about you…For a fiver, grab a set, give them a go. I was knocked out.

I have used many different guitar strings in my time as a guitarist. I have used strings made by Fender, Ernie Ball, D'Addario and Elixir to name a few. These were purchased for my USA Stratocaster to play around in Drop C tuning. They are very thick and are a very hard play; I love them! You get a full, heavy tone with the sort of "drone" you want with palm muted sections while still getting vibrancy from the high end too.Overall, they are a cheap, fun set of strings to try out!Note: you will most likely need to adjust your guitar to accommodate the much thicker strings to avoid fret buzz. Please vote if you found my review helpful or not; it helps me write better reviews!
