For conventional, non-coated strings, .012 Phosphor-Bronze D'Addarios have been my favourite for more than twenty years. You can also get them in 80-20 'bell tone', which is slightly brighter, but my experience was that these broke more quickly. In deciding which strings worked for me, I went through Martin, Ovation, Gibson, Fender, Guild and Earthwood (Ernie Ball). Aside from the question of tone, I found that the plain steel strings retained their tuning better than Gibsons, which have a tendency to go out of tune at the 12th fret, and that the wound strings last better than Earthwoods, which tended to get worn down by the frets more quickly. Martin,Ovation and Guild were all makes I continued to buy when I couldn't get D'Addarios, or couldn't afford them -- for many years they were the most expensive strings, although the price has dipped since the introduction of coated strings. In addition to other advantages, D'Addarios are colour coded, which is not especially important when you first fit them, as you can easily gauge how heavy they are by squeezing them gently. When a string breaks, though, it makes it very easy to find the right string from the old strings you keep in your case (if you are wise -- old strings need no additional stretching and so can go straight back on the guitar and be played during the gig). You should take all this with a huge pinch of salt, though -- the right string for you is the string that sounds right on your guitar with your style of playing. This was the main reason I went through all those makes of strings -- you need to keep trying them out until you find the ones which are just right. If your main or sole concern is tone, then conventional strings of this kind are probably your best bet. If longevity, cost and consistency are important, you should also consider coated strings. D'Addario make EXP Coated Strings, but my personal preference goes to Elixirs, which I find (for me, on my guitar) give a better tone. Coated strings last about 3-4 times as long with good, live tone, although the tone is slightly duller (may be an advantage on some instruments) than conventional strings at their best.Anyway -- five stars from me for these. They've kept me gigging for 20 years.

The best strings and gauge available for acoustic dreadnought guitars in terms of tone by a country mile. The rich tone you can only get from phosphor bronze and volume by the bucket load.If you're playing with any gauge less than 13 to 56s on your instrument then man up, get your finger exercise on and strap your weapon up with a set of these and let your box ring true like you've never heard it with the full tone and volume it is capable of.If you're a sweaty Betty who destroys a new set of strings in mere minutes then you'll be needing these:http://www.amazon.co.uk/DAddario-EXP17-Phosphor-013-056-Acoustic/dp/B0002E3CJAI personally much prefer the non coated version to the coated EXPs interms of tone and string feel but they do mean that you clammy handers can enjoy playing your instrument for longer than 30 seconds before the strings sound like rubber bands and are useful on tour when you want to avoid changing your strings after every gig, second gig or so.25 years of playing acoustics and I am still to find a better sounding and playing string than these. BUY THEM NOW.

Musicians rarely agree on these things. But while I'm no professional, I bought my first guitar in 1963 or 64 and have been playing ever since. Have owned around 20 different guitars and used a wide variety of strings. These "D'Addario Twelves" were put on a fairly pricey new guitar when it was set up at Andy's in Denmark Street 10 years back (IMHO the best guitar shop in London, or at least they were then) and I've bought them whenever possible since. Bright, hold their tone well, and reliable. My local dealer used to supply them (£8.50 per set, the last batch I got 3 or 4 years ago) but closed down a few months ago. So 10 sets from Amazon for £57.90 including delivery seems pretty good.I did try Martin bronze strings of the same gauge - M140 in a red packet - as a stop-gap, which were under six quid, but you could see, or more accurately hear, why those were cheap.I've heard about Elixirs but will be sticking with these D'Addarios. If you haven't used them, maybe try a set and see.

Dáddario phosphorous bronze are on the whole outstanding all round strings at the price point they come in at... perfect for beginners, intermediates who want a good quality, clear sounding, long lasting string. I use them on both a Tanglewood and Epiphone and they sound great on both (and satisfyingly a bit different given the shape of the guitars - one being a smaller folk style, "fingerpicky one"), so they really do complement the shape/quality of the guitar you put them on - Great for strumming or fingerpicking.Yes you can get specialist strings for a very particular sound that will only be noticed by a select few listeners (e.g. flat tops, jazz strings etc) and higher quality general acoustic strings (e.g.Elixirs) but these come in at around 3x the price or more, and on balance dont justify the price difference. OVerall a great buy. I just ordered 2 sets from this seller and got them 2 days later. PErfect!

I have used these strings for well over a decade. At first I tried all kinds, but these work best for me.I play an electro-acoustic, in a folk style, with a specialist acoustic amp. These strings produce a nice clean sound, bright without being harsh. Being light, I find these easy to fret (not having the strongest left hand in the world). I guess this also means they wear out a bit more quickly than thicker strings, but a set will last me a couple of months of regular play which is fine by me. They hold their tune really well - after a day or so of initial tuning to get them "set", they will stay in tune pretty much perfectly between playing.I have never ever encountered a fault in any of these strings, and none of them has ever broken on me. The use of coloured rings on the end makes them easy to fit correctly, and also reduced packaging to a minimum (just a single tarnish-proof bag).Highly recommended

What a steal these strings are! (Steal...steel...geddit?) The colour coding is a genius way of not getting the strings confused - as a blonde, ditzy stereotype, it can be mayhem!! I own a Hummingbird, and the bright tone worked beautifully with it.Considering the cost, that quality of sound is absolutely superb!! The strings come looped together in one packet (hence the relief at the colour coded ends!) and I found no fault at all with the product. These are a great set of strings, quite suitable for the professional - of all the D'Addario offerings, this to me is the 5*. For fingerwork and barring, these did not cut into my fingers but still had that firmness. They are of course less thick than many other offerings, but for me lend themselves to picking and fingering in the higher frets. A wonderful buy, and a reliable brand.A fabulous set of strings, what more can I say?!

I purchased the three pack of these strings to restring a Yamaha APX 700. I was impressed with the price delivered for 3 sets which I thought that was pretty good value compared to the single sets. I've never restrung a guitar before so after finding a great video on youtube I unpacked these strings. Nicely colour coded for novices like me made the job far easier. I was advised to use these string to keep the original gauge of string that was already on the guitar from the factory. After a short while all strings fitted and after a quick tune up my daughter loves the sound of the acoustic compared to her electric guitar. Great product, nice price and colour coding makes it much easier for novices like me.

Really pleased with these strings. I've recently tried Gibson phosphor bronze, Martin extra lights and these and whilst I like all of them, the D'Addario might just have the edge. 3 sets for roughly £5 per set seems good value, same price as the Gibson and Martin strings I have tried - God knows what goes into some of the sets that cost the higher prices. I've used these on a good quality jumbo solid woods, and I am very pleased. I would also like to be able to change strings more regularly without it breaking the bank, so I will probably choose these next time. I generally play without a plectrum, so finger style or strumming and these have a lovely balance of projection and ease of playing.Recommended.

My old friend and former housemate (Big Brother 7) Alan Capillary recommended these to me, at least I think these are the ones, and I must say I'm more than satisfied. I'm no Pat Metheny, not even a Honk Mervin, but I do love to twang my instrument, and these help me last longer and perform better, so 'what's not to like?' as massive t---ts like to say.I haven't seen old Al for years, but this has in no wise lessened my esteem for him; 'Absent make the heart go Fonda' as the saying always goes, after all, but thanks to his cybernetic assistance I can now strum real hard and not have to fret(!) about my damp, dirty fingers doing any lasting damage, so big shout out to AC, I say.

Bought these to replace the strings on my basic Yamaha acoustic. Those were relatively easy to play, and had quite a forgiving tone - my beginner's fumblings sometimes sounded quite good. These D'Addario strings have a comparitively sharp, metallic sound, and seem to amplify every little mistake. They're clearly good quality and I can see why more proficient players would want that clarity and precision, but as a humble newbie I need something easier to use. I'll give my remaining two sets to a much better guitarist friend, and will maybe try D'Addario 80/20 bronze extra lights next.

Received these strings a week ago, I have the Mahogany Taylor GS mini and it has never sounded as good as it does now. I have also found that it has required far less of the re-tuning I normally experience with new strings. We did have some lightweight strings fitted as my wife found these easier but the GS mini needs the medium in order to get the tension in the neck right. Fortunately we both find these strings easy to fret, or maybe unfortunately as my wife is pinching my guitar more frequently now. Colour coded eyelets are a nice touch when your eyesight is not what it once was.

Purchased to put on my practise guitar........8 months ago I started learning on Electric....now back to basics with these badboys, pain and tuff but I know this is the way to go in beefing up my finger strength...aint no gain without this pain... do yourself a favour and add these purely for that building strength!!!If you get any buzz after doing all normal adjustments......trustme, its not the guitar setup....its you!!!!! You need to do everything slower and much much harder with more accuracy to build back up to that speed, do not blame this tool!!!!

I've tended to get other strings when I go into a musical shop, but always come back to D'Addario strings. I have a few guitars and prefer this manufacturer/supplier. I use mainly acoustic guitars and am currently modifying an SX into an electro acoustic, and went for these strings. Obviously, sound depends on type of body the guitar has, but this product, for me, just has that cutting edge, that crispness and resonance, that is a compliment to the guitar itself.Would highly recommend these strings to anyone using acoustic/electro-acoustic guitars

I have been searching for the right strings for my Taylor 412 and as I use D'Addario string for my electrics decided to give the D'Addarios a go. After several string combinations I settled for these Phosphor Bronze extra light. They give a perfect balance to the guitar and has enhanced the tone, which is amazing on the Taylor anyway, they seem to last a long time too. I would highly recommend these strings, if you like your acoustic to ring clearly and produce some jaw dropping tone, then give them a try, and of course they are far from expensive!

8.1.2012

Have been using these strings on my Simon and Patrick electro acoustic for many years and although I have found a 'better string', it cost twice as much and fell off the initial quality of sound quicker than these. On cost, being able to effectively get 2 for 1 (from Amazon) compared to local music shop's prices is great news.Always consistently good on the sound I expect and reasonably slow to deteriorate.Money well spent.May 2017 update still in agreement with my last review very happy with the strings.
