Ernie' Ball (born Sherwood Roland Ball) was a musician and guitar seller hailing from California. Although he passed away in 2004, Ball's musical accessories are still sold across the globe, and renowned not only for their quality, but also for their affordability. The Ernie Ball brand is perhaps most famous for its Super, Extra, and Regular Slinky Strings, and today i'm taking a look at the latter. Legend has it that Slinky strings were developed in the 60's when Mr Ball noticed that the budding rock n' roll musicians of the day were having difficulty playing the third string of their guitars. At the time, the third string was typically of a wound construction and therefore thicker than necessary.Basically, Ball revolutionised guitar strings by bringing a thinner gauge across the range, making them easier to bend and ultimately more compatible with the genre of music that the decade was most famous for.Constructed from nickel-plated steel (which has become the norm for Rock music), the strings are of the following gauges - 010 (top E), .013 (A), .017 (D), .026 (G), .036 (B), and .046 (bottom E). The strings are thicker than both Extra and Super Slinky, but still remain easy to bend and a pleasure to play. I find that the strings are light to the touch and are better to strum with than Super Slinkys. Like the other Ernie Ball strings that I have used in the past, the strings return a bright and clear sound with a pleasant tone. In my personal experience i've found that Regular Slinky strings last a long time, with the top E string (notorious for snapping first), time and time again surprising me with its longevity. In terms of value for money, even though they are more expensive, Ernie Ball strings last a lot longer than the ultra cheap strings from third-party brands which you can pick up on eBay. I think the impressive lifespan of Regular Slinkys comes from the fact that they're made from high quality materials, or "the finest materials around", if you are to believe the blurb on the website.Overall, I would highly recommend these excellent guitar strings as affordable and long lasting bits 'o metal. They're easy to play (whether you're a picker or a strummer), and will suit both novices and pros alike. You only need to look at the list of guitarists who have used these strings (Slash, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Steve Vai to name but a few) to know that you're dealing with a quality product.

I got into playing the guitar because most of the music I listen to is guitar-driven. I love all of the different sounds and genres this instrument can fall into, and like many people I fell in love with certain artists and bands over others. I've been using Ernie Ball strings since I started guitar because most of those artists also use these strings and have their names on the back of the packet, and at around £5 a pack I knew these strings would be good enough for me if they are good enough for them. Even after years of playing, the only time I've ever broken a string has been my own fault tuning too fast or a problem with my guitar's own hardware.Ernie Ball strings feel great, are fairly priced, easy to find almost anywhere, and it is just as easy to order single strings or create custom sets. I haven't ever felt the need to change to a different string brand because of this, and honestly I don't know if I ever will.I am not sponsered by or related to Ernie Ball in any way, but these strings have given me nothing but reasons to believe in them throughout the years, and are definitely a good choice if you feel overwhelmed by the amount of choice on the market. They're no hassle, plain and simple strings that sound good and feel good, and do everything they are meant to perfectly.(Just make sure you buy the right gauge!)

Hey all. I'll start by saying these are good strings BUT, if you're used to you're strings being quite "slinky" then these are not for you.I usually play Ernie Ball Rock n' roll classics which I find have a fantastic amount of bend to them but not too much to jepordise you're tuning. I wanted to beef out my tone a bit as I'm the only guitarist in my band but i didn't want to lose tonality in the solos, these seem like a perfect match right? Well these do what they say BUT if like me you use alot of tremelo on your D string then don't go for these, the top (thickiest strings), E, A, D in this pack come extremely tight and you get little to none flexibility out of them. The G,B and the E do have great flexibility like most slinky packs. All I'm saying is, be aware that if, like me you use a lot of "thicker string vibrato" (as i like to call it) you will have to sacrifice it in order to use these strings. However, if you are used to using tight strings then these are for you. You get to keep that nice tightness for all the rythem sections and then with these strings you get some nice flexibility when you break into a solo.Simply put, the top E, A, D (thickest) are quite tight.4 stars because they have absolutely nothing wrong with them, great shipping time and great price they just weren't for me!

Most of these reviews are for other guages, so to be clear I'm writing about the 12 to 56 nickel wound set.Moving from 11s (still ernies) there is a noticeable difference in tone. There is much more bottom end. This could mean that for a Les Paul they might be too muddy sounding, but for my strat they sound very nice; powerful and warm. This will be in part due to the fact that I have tuned down half a step from standard to make bends easier. As for bends, unless you have very strong hands you will struggle. I bend a lot and am finding the transition difficult. This is obviously not the strings fault, to be clear, but my own for using such heavy strings. However, the gain in tone makes the change worth it,now to wait for my hands to strengthen. In short, these are great strings, though not for everyone. I suspect that some of the reviews claiming broken strings are not for this set (as they are so heavy) or faults of the guitars bridge or nut. Oh, also make sure you have to ability to cut new nut slots or get someone else to do it for you, as these strings are thicker than normal they won't fit in a nut cut for 10s.

Excellent product providing reliability and value for money. This type of strings really suits my Vintage Les Paul with that wonderful and powerful tone that you only get from Ernie Ball.I use the regular gauge as it suits my playing style really well and also the strings remain in tune extremely well. After using the Super Slinky strings in the past I have gone back to the regular gauge just out of preference. However I would recommend any of the Ernie Ball strings as they all provide the very distinctive, beautiful and powerful tone.No matter what level of guitarist these strings will suit all levels. In fact my friends have since switched to using Ernie Ball strings both at home and on stage with only one regret, that they had done so a lot sooner as it has changed how their music sounds. Therefore now matter what level of musician you are I would very strongly recommend that you use these strings and you will not be disappointed or look back.

I discovered the existence of Ernie Ball Extra Slinky strings in 1987 and have used no other strings on my electric guitar since then. Whether that is a 'tip of the hat' to them or just me being set in my ways I have no idea. But I will continue to use these strings until they stop making them or until I cease to exist, whichever comes first.I'm starting to get on in years now and have severe arthritis, which has left my fingers deformed and with very limited mobility, but I still play my guitar with these strings on it, albeit not as well as I did when I was young and there are many chord shapes I can no longer manage. However,I will keep playing no matter how bad it gets and it will always be these strings that will be on my guitar.I have tried other strings when playing guitars in shops or guitars owned by other people, but I always come to the same conclusion. These are still the best. Cheers Ernie.

Great quality as always from ernie ball. I've never tried these strings before, i typically tend to use the ernie ball hybrid slinkies. The power slinkies are good, and sound great, mostly when playing on a clean amp setting or with a mild overdrive. With lots of distortion (i use a Boss DS-1) you can get a wicked stoner-rock sound that's more pronounced with these strings, they do pack a punch. I guess that's expected, thicker strings, darker, deeper tones. The one thing i'm not too keen on is that they are (obviously) harder to bend on the g/b strings, being thicker than the standard gauge.I personally prefer playing with hybrid slinkies, as they give a combination of deeper tones on the bass strings, while also making it easier to bend the g/b/e strings, which are thinner than standard. I'm in no rush to restring my guitar yet, and will probably keep these power slinkies on it for a while. 5/5

I've got a load of guitars, and for some reason I couldn't figure my Fender Jaguar was falling to the back of the crowd. It didn't have the bite of the tele, the power of the Les Paul, or the resonance of the ES335. I rarely played itluckily, I snapped a string, and realised I hadn't restrung it in some time. I wondered what afficianado players recommended for the jaguar, and saw 11s, and in turn a few people who played my sort of stuff recommended Power SlinkysI'd always just taken the guitar store's recommended strings before, but ordered online for a change, and am delighted I did. Apart from being cheaper, and saving me a trip, these strings make me feel like I have a new guitar ahead of the thin weedy sound I had before. There's a lot of guts in there, but they're still light enough for all the expressive blues bends I playto summarise - delighted, and buying more for my telecaster

This review is of Ernie Ball’s ‘Super Slinky’ strings for electric guitar. The gauges are: 9, 11, 16, 24, 32, 42. The G (gauge 16) is single-strand nickel-plated steel, like the B and top E, so light and bendable.I play a Fender Strat for which these ‘Super Slinky’ strings are near-perfect: they’re easy to fit, the top strings bend well without much left-hand effort and they’re great for playing power chords. A good tip is to use a light, bendy plectrum, which is pretty much essential for the top E (gauge 9).One caution: these strings are very stretchy and take a few hours to ‘bed in’ during which they go out of tune easily, especially the top two, so best not to fit them immediately prior to a performance. Also if you’re an aggressive player you may occasionally snap one of the top three, so keep spares.

Decent strings for anyone looking to tune lower then D. For me theses are great on a 25.5 scale in Drop C# or lower. I personally use them mostly with Drop C# and C# G# C# F# G# C# (Dadgad half a step down) I wouldn't go any lower then a B Tuning with these but that's just because I prefer a very high tension.I'd actually still prefer a heavier gauge just for my Low C#. Perhaps a 64 or 65. But I have to deal with the 62's that come in this pack which is Just a minor personal preference with Tension.I think most people don't like alot of tension on their strings so maybe you wouldn't have that issue.C# is my sweet spot tuning for these bad bois.I'm sure if you use these on a baritone scale you could tune alot lower. For a Les Paul these could be handy for tunings from D through to C.

These strings work perfectly if you want to set up your guitar for some seriously low tunings. I currently have mine in drop B and these give a very beefy tone that suits the style of music associated with this tuning perfectly. They have a nice sound to them and even though they are Ernie Balls I am very impressed with the set. They appear to be durable and should last a good while.A point for anyone considering putting these on your guitar though, be warned that as these strings are a lot thicker than normal ones, you do have to set the guitar up so that you don't break the neck with the added tension - you can do this either by taking it to a specialist which costs money or, if you are able to,by doing it yourself (which actually isn't too hard, but you do risk damaging your guitar).

I have an Epiphone G400 [SG style], which I haven't re-strung in the four years since purchasing. The original strings were size 10 and pretty tough.I brought these because I wanted to bend strings easily and use a lighter left hand. From this point of view, they are a success. Easy to install (even for a first-timer) and very smooth (almost too smooth) to the touch. My playing improved pretty much instantly. On the down-side, they appear to come out of tune quite easily, although this could be related to my beginners re-stringing technique. They also have a very buzzy sound on the guitar (when un-amped) compared to my previous strings - but I can imagine that lighter, more bendy strings would move more than the tough ba'stads I had on previously

I've been a committed Super Slinky user .009-.042's, out of habit really, for years. On a whim, I decided to give these a go. Ten minutes of practice and your fingers hardly notice the difference, but blimey! Your ears do.You may need to tweak your truss rod a tiny amount, depending on how your guitar is currently set up. I also had to adjust the intonation a minuscule amount (only on the bottom E and G strings, and I mean minuscule, I could've left it). But, my guitar, an SG, now sounds and plays like it's wearing the strings that were made for it.I could wax on about how tonally great they are, and how if you want a drop D or C there's no better choice, but strings are all about you…For a fiver, grab a set, give them a go. I was knocked out.

What can I say about my Balls that hasn't already been said?! Got these from Manns Music I think and they were great! A great price, great service and they are as super and slinky as they have ever been.My personal choice for the best part of 30 years (I bought them once when I couldn't get a set of Fender Bullets and I never went back) - these strings have been pleasing the discerning ears of mod's up and down the country. Whether live or on record Ernie Ball strings have always delivered a pure biting tone that cuts through the mid's and bass frequencies of our band The Scene - clear high's and crisp and tight low's!!GarytheMod recommends Ernie Ball Strings - in fact all he ever does is talkBall's!!

These are excellent strings, always my choice for a guitar tuned to Concert Pitch. Always try to use the same gauge strings when changing them, it's always good to experiment with different gauges for different tunings, but bear in mind the tension on the neck will differ with different gauges and means a truss rod adjustment will be required each time you change gauges. That said, I'm a Metal player and, for Concert Pitch tunings, these are perfect. I use them with Fast Fret, and these strings will retain their bright sound and feel smooth and fast for a good few months, depending on how often you play, of course. Definitely recommended.
