An overall exciting experience brought down by some minor niggles.Dead Space Extraction is an arcade shooter with bags of personality. Recently the Sci-fi horror genre has suffered quite considerably at the hands of half arsed re-hashes of classic experiences with nothing new daring to raise its head in an already overcrowded market. Fortunately along comes the Dead Space franchise which attempts to inject some new blood into the gore fest, and it does it rather well. The story is not entirely unique and is highly reminicent of older classics like Alien and The Thing, but instead of simply copying the above and re-hashing the story for the sake of it,Dead Space nods repectfully in their direction and then adds its own DNA into the mix.Without giving too much away the plot follows the story of a 'planet crack' (mining expedition) gone wrong as an ancient artifact is unveiled on a far away planet and alien creatures begin tearing chunks out of hapless colonists. In Dead Space Extraction you play the role of one of a handfull of survivors tasked with escaping the nightmare and maybe figuring out what went wrong as you go.Every so often the game will switch perspectives between different characters, which gives the player a deeper insight into the story at large. Often this is the result of lazy writing and can be a real immersion breaker, but in Dead Space Extraction it is handled particularly well as you take over during key events and important plot points are revealed.Speaking of characters, each of them is well designed and it is easy to become attached to them. The voice acting is well above par (although not spectacular) and the dialogue between them is good (though not stunning). Overall the main cast are likable enough and believable enough for you to be able to realate, and you'll want play to the end just to see how it all works out for them. The villians of the piece, the Necromorphs, are suitably mysterious and creepy and your first encounters with each 'breed' are quite exciting. They are nicely designed and represented and, in a way, quite charasmatic. They managed to bring me well into their horrific little world and I must say I quite enjoyed it.Although highly atmospheric, the world of Dead Space Extraction is not a fright-fest. The main focus of the game is action, and this is tied in quite well with cinematic camera work and scripted cutscenes. Although initially very impressive this does not bode particularly well for re-playability (one of the main selling points of arcade shooters) as sitting through the elongated scripted events more than once does tend to become bland very quickly.Fortunately there is a bonus 'challenge' mode where you may revisit many of the games impressive environments and play through a series of enemy waves (without cutscenes) in order to get a high score. This is spiced up with the inclusion of a 'random' inventory where at many points in the level you are given a randomised firearm to help dispatch the Necromorph horde, but this goes little of the way to making up for the lack of innovation in these stages. Some extra mini-games would have been very nice and it would certainly have spiced up the tiresome slug fest of decapitating the same old enemies time and again.Speaking of decapitation, one of the best aspects of Dead Space is the fact that, since the Necromorphs are already dead, they are a bitch to put down a second time. The player is tasked with 'tactically' immobilising the enemy, by sheering off limbs, heads and tenticles until the viscious little sods finally give in and die. Initially this is quite fun, as the visceral chunks go flying everywhere, but it eventually becomes tiresome as each individual enemy is put down in a very similar way. Take off both arms and they drop, take off the tail and they drop... its not brain surgery. If you're going to play it that way you'll need a much greater variation in enemies to prevent things from becoming stale.Audio and visual is way above average for the Wii. The soundtrack in particular is extremely atmospheric and well worth cranking up the volume for. You will notice a recurring 'loud jump' theme as enemies come piling out of airvents and through doorways, and this become a tad predictable, but its largely ignorable as the overall quality covers for that.Unfortunately the game's main flaw, and its a big flaw, is the complete lack of challenge. Playing through on the hardest possible difficulty setting I managed to finish it in under six hours (with tea breaks) and without dieing once. Upon completion I then unlocked the 'Impossible' difficulty yet still found very little challenge. I've now owned Dead Space Extraction since yesterday morning and have already finished it on 'Hard', am two thirds of the way through on 'Impossible', have unlocked EVERYTHING and worse yet have completed many of the bonus stages on 'Impossible'.I'm a veteran gamer (23 years and counting) so I wasn't expecting it to be 'balls out, charge stark naked at the enemy, last one alive is a big poof' hard, but when you can complete a game blindfolded, one arm tied behind your back and only using your tongue on the trigger, then quite clearly there is something seriously wrong. The inclusion of unlockable animated comics are a real godsend as they're great to watch. Each of them is of good quality and the voice acting is superb. Fans of comics like 2000AD and Aliens will love them. I most certainly did and probably will again.Overall Dead Space Extraction would make a fine addition to any Sci-Fi horror fan's collection. Re-playability is an issue due to samey enemies and an overly scripted story mode. Likewise the lack of challenge is a real problem, but for £15 (at time of writing) its not such a huge sum to hand over for a pretty memorable experience. If they made a sequel, I'd buy it. Especially if they learn from their mistakes.

It's hard to start this review of this superb game without an impassioned plea asking you to buy it immediately. Games of the quality and technical prowess of Dead Space Extraction are an absolute rarity on Nintendo's console. Encourage publishers by buying this game!AhemDead Space Extraction is a rare, surprising and contradictory beast. It's an on rails shooter with gameplay that is actually hugely immersive. It's a franchise spin-off that holds its own against a fantastic original. Most importantly however, it's a simple premise with one of the best game narratives in recent history. The perfect prequel in so many ways, DSE is a chaotic and intense depiction of the fall of Aegis VII and the Ishimura mining vessel that so terrified 360/PS3 players two years ago.To fans of the franchise, the nods, winks and locations give a familiar warm (or is that cold?) feeling down the spine, but the Ridley-Scott influenced setting will be more than enough to engage newcomers. Although certainly released from the shackles of an out and out horror game, DSE is darker, if that were even possible.Focussing on gunplay and action over survival horror staples, DSE follows several antagonists on a pre-defined first-person path, using all manner of weaponry and sci-fi gadgetry to blast undead aliens, literally to pieces.Crucially, the Wii-remote takes Dead Space's core `dismemberment' mechanic (where precision cutting of enemies limbs is more effective than aimless head and body shots) and perfects it with pixel perfect infra-red pointing controls. Even better than this, the game takes the original's sparring use of Telekinesis (pick-up-and-throw) and Kinesis (slow-down moving objects) and turns combat into a genuinely gratifying three-pronged attack scheme - each level a puzzle of explosive possibilities. Visceral games even manage to shoe-horn in some Metroid aping mini games for controls, barricade fixing, circuit wiring, and more.It may be hard to believe, but the ever entertaining combat, is superseded (often for minutes at a time) by real-time cut scenes, dialogue and acting. Given that Edge magazine described it as `The Citizen Kane of rail-shooters' it is perhaps not surprising that DSE has a real narrative quality to it. Obviously, we're still talking about videogames here, but the overall quality of the tale it tells is up there with a good Friday night sci-fi film, with top notch atmospherics, sound, and graphics that push the console to its limits. It's very hard not to play through in one go.Add to this a fairly memorable `endless' challenge mode and bonus comic materials as rewards for completion-ists, along with high scores and co-op support, it's hard to see a third party game (apart from Monster Hunter) beating team Visceral's efforts to really push the Wii's capabilities.Overall, the best complement I can pay to this game, - apart from the fact that it is a note-perfect fan spin-off - is that it's not just the best rail-shooter I've ever played, its one of the best games of the year, on any console.

This is obviously quite a broad statement that can apply to anything from video games to fashion, but in this case, I feel as though most peoples' opinions of this game are likely to fall into one of two categories; those who've played the first game, and those who haven't.The short answer to whether Dead Space: Extraction is any good is; probably not if you're a veteran, and probably if you're not. Why? Well, the truth is that Dead Space (later abbreviated DSE) is actually not a bad game. The problem lies in that those who liked the original will find the graphics OK, the tension mostly missing and the game-play not terribly varied and, in places,a bit gimmicky. The impression I got was that the original Dead Space won a lot of new gamers over to the survival-horror franchise for reasons that I won't go into now, and those gamers just won't get that same feeling, that same instinctual 'zing' present in the original.I'm a little confused as to what DSE is trying to achieve, actually. It's obviously an 18-rated title, but everything about it suggests that it's trying to win over either the very casual gamers among us, or the kids. The presentation, the amount of physical involvement (such as shaking the Wii-mote to reload) and the general feel is definitely more suited to the younger and more sprightly among us. In other words, those who like to relax in a recliner, or who are likely to take this seriously, aren't necessarily the ones I think of when considering the styles of DSE.But even when playing with my sister, who is quite a casual gamer and a generally very involved in everything she does, we came away with the feeling of being underwhelmed, which is a shame, since even when we attempted to embrace its' new nature, we came away with that feeling persisting still. The reason I say, 'it depends who you are' though, is because I get the impression that for many people, especially the still-uninitiated among us, there is quite a lot of fun to be had. The story moves well-enough, the game-play IS engaging, as previously mentioned, and technically, this is a fairly sound game. But, overall, I found that Dead Space doesn't seem to quite know what it wants. The original was a straight-forward survival-horror game done right, but the sequel seems to be trying to approach it in an entirely different (and apparently much more difficult) way, and coming up just a little short. As a stand-alone FPS, Dead Space is not bad, but those looking to recapture that tension, that atmosphere, will probably feel a bit short-changed.

Absolutely amazing game. Recently completed this with a freind in co op mode and we really enjoyed it. The graphics are amazing for Wii, the music and effects too - overall production throughout is top notch. A big thing usually is controls, and they work effortlessly. In response to the review about bugs, well we didn't come across any at all, and it didn't crash once. Though I have had some games that have done that. Also, it is an on rail shooter, so it is a little unfair to mark it down if you just don't get the on rail thing. But all in all, this is a game that will stay on the shelf for us. It was engaging, fun and a blast to play. The game starts off more with a story and paces it self so,and gradually ramps up the action along with story twists and new weapons - which have alternate firing mechanisms. The only thing I would recommend is setting the difficulty to Hard. The only thing I could gripe really is the difficulty at times even on Hard. This is probably down to how much of a gamer you are, but it may be a little easy at times to accomplished ones. But saying that, it does have some parts that are generally tough and ones that you have to go through a few times. In relation to replay value. Having completed the game, you can play ten stages in which you just blast through hordes of enemies. This was better than we expected, and there is a high score to beat. Each lasts ten to fifteen minutes. We are also going through the game again on Impossible mode, and it actually gets better this time round, as it tests you more and getting through is more of a close call each time.I hope this sells well, as we love this game, and hope there are more mature titles to come on the Wii.

I bought this entirely on a whim in a game shop, and wasnt disapointed. Although i took some getting used to playing a rail-shoooter after such a long time not playing them, i quickly picked up the style of gameplay again and really enjoyed the game.Visually its brilliant, marvellous graphics considering its on the wii, infact one of the best looking games on the wii in my opinion. The game play is your standard rail-shooter, so be warned if you see something useful you dont have long to grab it before it gone for that level, the weapons provided in the game are interesting which is the kindest i can be i think, considering the basic weapon (rivet gun) is the easiest to get the best dis-memberments with, certain weapons are completely pointless and a waste of inventory space, but the flame thrower machine gun etc are just standard rah rah rah. However i personally did get great and immense pleasure in the game play of shooting the crap out of the necromorphs, especially when i has shot them with the time slowing device, the slow-mo dismemberments are more than fun. There is a downside to the game though, the bloody dialog, dont get me wrong the story is interesting and fairly well written but jeeze give us a skip button, when your playing it again you just want to get down to the shooting and violence, not listen to some twit ramble on about "why is this happening" and "whats that" "lets go here", "im an executive therefore im in charge, im a cop i have a gun im in charge" etc etc etc, but that aside this is a great game for killing time and a definate stress reliever after a crappy day at work.

As has been mentioned, this is a rail shooter, you progress through the levels at a pre-determined rate, along the way you get to experience some of the horror that leads to the games Dead Space and Dead Space 2. This game explains how events unfold and it can be played as either one player or two for co-op play. You can collect weapons along the way and ammunition for these, you can also collect upgrades for weapons which will give you more shots per clip for example, you can collect audio logs that help explain the story, and at the end of each level you will be scored on how many items you can collect, logs collected, accuracy. Now, to the way of collecting said ammunition, logs, etc...You are equiped with a telekinesis module that allows you to grab items from the floor and pull them into your inventory. You also collect a stasis module along the way that allows you to effectively "freeze" enemies for a short period so you can shoot them or hack at them with a physical attack. This stasis module will recharge itself over time and so you do have infinite shots with it.As you progress you unlock chapters and there is also a challenge mode so that you can play completed levels and try to achieve a high score which either you try to beat or friends try to beat!At this price, it is a MUST for any Dead Space fan and even if you don't know of the series, it is a great game in itself and easy to get into and fun to progress through, it got my GF hooked and she doesn't play the other Dead Space games!

Dead Space... what can you say? It is definately the most mentally challenging survival horror title I have ever had so much fun playing. The original game fully deserves its awards and when I saw Dead Space Extraction for the Wii, I put my money down without reading a single review first. The key difference from the first title is the "on rails" gameplay. The computer moves you after completion of each "scene" and your view is first person not 3rd like the original. As a result, I was a little disappointed having completed the first title, yet over games like Ghost Squad, House of Dead etc, Dead Space is miles better. More engaging, more challenging, more horiffic, more enjoyable, and as the first title; mentally challenging with the atmosphere created.I am looking forward to Dead Space 2 released this year on PC, PS3 and XBOX as I definately prefer the 3rd person adventure over this one; it seems to add more tension and suspense to the atmosphere. However, in conclusion, dont under estimate the well written story this game provides along with equally horrific scenes and heart stopping moments. The best horror "shoot em up" game on the WII without a doubt, and money well spent!

After getting a wii recently (and soon a ps3) I was quick to check out dead space extraction having seen it (and dead space 2) played, and given my sci-fi horror tastes I knew it would be my cup of tea...I was not disappointed...I have had issues with the zapper, which is a shame (I find using it really awkward and jerky), but playing just with the wii remote is really good, and the controls and aiming are nice and smooth...The whole set up and atmosphere is like a blend of the films Alien, Pandorum and Event Horizon (I get the impression that the PS3 games are even more in the style of Event Horizon) so if like me you loved these films be sure to check out dead spacethis is a brilliantly done rails shooter,I got frustrated on the odd occasion at not being able to pick up ammo in time but this adds to the gritty first person realism of it I guess and the tension...For a wii the graphics are excellent, the characters and voice actors are decent, music fits well...what more can I say?I know this has been released in the Dead Space 2 limited edition but I would say it's worth getting both separately if you have a wii as this works so brilliantly with the wii controls

I have a guilty secret I rather like "rail games" especially those in a Video Arcade (yes I am that old that I sometimes still call them that - anyway what was wrong with Pac Man?) This one is not just a great addition to the genre even if you are not so keen you should give it a go. You actually have quite a lot of "movement" (OK looking around) when you are being moved from A-B and given the linearity of most FPS it probably saves you the effort of using the "W" button anyway. Also the story (as with all Dead Space stuff) is fantastic - if you've played any of the other games you know that its not going to end well with many of the characters - but it still pulls a few surprises for even the most cynical of gamers. The graphics are good - about the best you can get from a WII. The WII mote is well suited to this sort of game and you get a really good immersive feel. One point this is most certainly a game for the grown ups - I know that many view the age restriction with a certain disdain but I know that I don't want my little one shooting the limbs of other human beings no matter how mad they may be. As an adult clearly BRING IT ON.Overall this is a great game go get

This game is very impressive. I'll get the one slight complaint out of the way; It's quite control-heavy and by that I mean I sometimes have a little trouble remembering which buttons/actions do what, particularly when the action is in full flow. However, on to the good points, of which there are many. A gripping storyline has been packaged with excellent graphics and outstanding acting. The voice acting is spot-on and indeed the best character/voice acting I've seen on the Wii.The whole game is well designed, very atmospheric and incredibly tense. Although it is On-The-Rails, great delivery and pacing means that it almost never feels like it.Occasionally you have the option to take different routes and it has more to do than simply blast everything into oblivion. Trying to fix a broken circuit whilst holding off rampaging monsters will certainly get your heart rate up.I much prefer to play this game with a friend, having them as backup while working on puzzles is good.Everything about the game draws you in and builds up the intensity.I'm glad I bought it and would thoroughly recommend.

Aside from the fact that this game does not come close to the audiovisual brillance of the original Dead Space and is no real sucessor I found it to be laden with bugs to an extent I have hardly witnessed before. Three times already the game completely crashed during loading and I had to restart the console. Sometimes within the game enemies stand behind crates or boxes and just do not enter the player's line of sight, which means that due to the fact that as a rail-shooting game movement of the player is controlled by the CPU this bug forces the player to restart the whole level because there is no way to hit the enemy in that situation. Another time I was attacked by the little crabs that come out of larger enemy's bodies, but the ensuing shaking animation did not throw them off and after watching my character shake for several minutes I had to restart the game again. Summed up, EA should have spent proper time to debug this game since wasting time like that is no fun at all...3.5 stars, I am slowly getting tired of rail-shooters....

What can I say about this game?...It blew me away. The first time I played it I could not believe how fantastic the graphics were considering it was for the Wii. Secondly I was sucked in straight away by it's amazing storyline and in your face action.I loved the fact I didn't have to walk around, get lost, bored and fustrated before completing a mission. For those that haven't played it yet this game is a bit like Vitua Cop (Sega Saturn), in as much as you only control where you go at certain points in a level...and even then you don't control the walking. This game really is a cinematic experience that has been perfected down the the smallest detail.Enemies aren't a "Peice Of Cake",instead they have to be dismembered or shot in their weak spots. Same goes for the bosses... you don't just keeping pumping lead (perhaps like you do in Virtua Fighter) until they are defeated.I usually find it easy to pick out bad points in games, but it's extremely hard to find any flaws with this game...in my eyes it is utterly flawless.

As indicated in the review title this is a very good rail shooter, with some interesting aspects of the survival horror genre thrown in. Having just played it through twice I would say it's good fun and worth the purchase price.I would recomend it to anyone who enjoys either game style but esp those who like First Person Shooters. It is fun to play on "Hard" and "Expert" difficulty, but "Normal" is a beginner level so avoid it unless you are new to shooters. With an easy introduction in the first two stages, things really get interesting from there on in and the last half of the game is challenging without being impossible. (i.e. you do not get slaughtered every five mins, neither is it a walkover.you do find yourself thinking "I won't make it if I find another monster before a power up!")It does have an involving story which did get me hooked. It is fun and there is a reasonable level of suspense. However, dont buy it if you do like to roam around levels- it is a rail shooter after all.

My buddy and I played through this game in about 10-12 hours. There are multiple paths that can vary your experience on a second play through. This game presents a story to you in the most engaging and personal way that I have seen on Wii and is certainly one of the most unique experiences on any console. The weapons are very original, the scares are plenty and the action is often relentless. The graphics are some of the best I have seen on Wii and really do expose how lazy other developers are.The only criticism of the game is that it was too short. Other people have complained that it is essentially an "on rails shooter" and whilst a part of me does agree that a true Dead Space experience is what we all want,it doesn't take anything away from this title. The price has dropped an ridiculous amount since I purchased it so there really is no better time to give this game a try. Support this kind of content on Wii and more great games will come. I'm looking to Silent Hill next!

Slowly take part in a space mining expedition into madness as other characters and your turn against themselves in this thrilling on rails Wii shooter. This game is great - nearly worth 5* but not quite enough, taking it off rails would have probably given it the extra that it needs. But it's still great fun the way it is like House of the Dead overkill and others in its genre.Graphics 4/5Great of the Wii.Sound 5/5Thrilling and atmospheric.Gameplay 4/5Good, but a free roaming adventure would be better.Playability 4/5Uncovering the story etc... will prob lead to a downfall in this, but no doubt you would go back for excellent shooting thrills. All told buy it. Goldeneye (free roaming),HOD Overkill are worth considering as competition. This is up there with them though.
