The latest adventure of Lara Croft aims to provide a darker experience to the Tomb Raider franchise, or so I've read. In fact despite the settings being mainly underground there is not much difference between this and previous Tomb Raider outings. That is not to say that this is a bad thing. The game offers the same mix of exploration, combat and puzzles that you might expect from a Tomb Raider game. It also has some very impressive graphics, thanks to the PS3 engine which is used to full effect in modelling both Lara herself and the environment she explores. As you might expect Lara is looking better than ever. Each successive version of her makes her look more plausibly attractive rather than some sort of Dolly Parton like doll. Her boobs have officially shrunk, although in contrast more attention now seems to have been paid to her bum. She is still an idealised image of a woman but as she is strong, confidant and successful I'm not sure the feminists can complain. Like most fans I still enjoy seeing her dressed in different outfits and the yellow and black wetsuit is a highlight of this particular game.Where Tomb Raider Underworld does not stand up well is in comparison to some other PS3 releases, most notably the Uncharted games. Where as Uncharted offers something new Tomb Raider is still the same basic game that has been going since its first release. Combat for example is a matter of keeping moving and hitting fire and Lara aims automatically. This leads to some strange fights where you just run around jumping all over the place until the enemy is dead. Compare this to the cover and shoot system of Uncharted ( which has been copied in so many other games since ) and it seems a little silly. Also Lara, despite her voluptuous figure still has the athletic ability of a world class gymnast. She effortlessly climbs, jumps and performs other acrobatics that frankly defy physics. At least in Uncharted the character of Nathan Drake had the decency to make it look difficult. There is a good story to Underworld and a good mix of environments. As usual the game is all about passing checkpoints so if you die you respawn at the last checkpoint you passed. For the most part this works well, its only occassionally you have to go back and redo a large section again. It does still have a few cutscenes where you have to press buttons in order to survive but thankfully these are not as numerous as in previous games. These have always annoyed me as if you keep getting it wrong you end up seeing the same cutscene about a dozen times, ruining any dramatic impact they might have had.Not surprisingly there is no multiplayer and I'm not sure how they could ever do this. There is the usual bonus game if you like, of collecting all the hidden treasures, but I've always found this more irritating than challenging. As a result there is not much replayability. In all then this is pretty much what you might expect from a new Tomb Raider game. It carries on from the last few games where they have aimed to go back to the roots of the series and include more tombs to explore and puzzles to solve. There is a good mix of action and adventure and its a nice addition to the Tomb Raider series. It only falls down when compared to its newest rival of Uncharted, but I can only hope that this prompts Eidos to make some long overdue updates to the gameplay in the next release. I would however still reccomend this game to any fan of the genre as a welcome return of Miss Lara Croft.

Another exciting adventure for Miss Croft in her new designer outfits, boasting motion-captured movements modelled from gymnast Heidi Moneymaker (no pun, real name), she runs, climbs, swings, swims, swishes at undergrowth, chimney vaults and fights her way dirty kneed through a maze of jungles, caves, glaciers, ships and strange ancient machinery ... but Lara need never feel alone out there in the middle of the Mediterranean, or in Thailand, Southern Mexico or Jan Mayen island in the Arctic ocean; for around any corner there is bound to be another adversary, mercenary or Colin O'Malley orchestra.Underworld is poised for greatness, but with yet another new graphics engine developed especially for the game, fresh with the latest bugs, it presents the gamer with yet another bag of niggles. The character animation is better than before, indeed it is excellent and you have to see it to believe it, but Lara has forgotten how to walk or creep. The best she can do is run in slow motion, or at least that's what it looks like to me. Perhaps walking was not in Heidi's contract ... this practically forces me to run around everywhere, giving me no time to really absorb the fantastic artwork and impressive scenery, and possibly as a result I discover that the puzzles require no thought whatsoever. If you can press it, push it, switch it, rotate it or climb it - do it. You don't need to know why, you don't need to examine the mechanism.Long gone are the days where you need a piece of paper to write down clues or figure out how to solve puzzles. I didn't get stuck once playing this game. This was the most disappointing aspect of the release. Despite promises of non-linear gameplay and while the graphics are generally superb (with the few usual bugs such as Lara floating in mid-air in some camera angles), the sound effects and music heart-pounding, and while the story sets up the adventure excellently - the main reason we keep coming back to Tomb Raider is for the puzzles. In Underworld, they are simply far too easy to solve by anyone's measure. The only real genuine puzzle in the game is why, if Crystal Dynamics focused so much on the WCLD (What Could Lara Do?) philosophy, why did they fail on that point so catastrophically - to the point where Lara still can't jump onto ledges that are only a foot above her head if the game developer hasn't thought about making the ledge "grabbable", and she still jumps off to her death in stupid directions when that's clearly not the direction in which you intended for her to die! The controls continue to be the most troublesome aspect of the most recent Lara adventures, when the puzzles themselves ought to pose the greatest challenges.Another major disappointment for me is that exploration is not encouraged. Except to find a limited variation of pick-ups and a few bonuses which unlock some rather uninspiring extras, the game is in fact as linear as they come. And with the demise of Croft Manor, there is no escape to Lara's house to take a break from the bats of Bhogavati to practise your pole-dancing skills. However, that should not put you off buying this game. I've said it before I'll say it again, there is no other game like it on the market. No self-respecting gamer would miss buying Tomb Raider Underworld. It is a marvel to behold, we only wish the developers would go back to basics and create a game that is primarily designed to exercise the grey matter and less of the adrenaline ...

So here we are again another year another Tomb Raider, as usual we have the mass hype and the mass split opinions. I myself Have always liked Tomb Raider not at a fanboy level but as a gamer who enjoys story over flashy, Some have said Tomb Raider should go back to the original makers but that is stupid, Core Design made 6 Tomb Raider games and for the most part failed to advance the series at all. Tomb Raider exploded onto the scene and sent the gaming industy into a frezy Tomb Raider opened eyes and in my opinion has become a victim of Fame and over expectation. If a new unknown game came out and was as good as Tomb Raider Underworld it would be greatly praised yet Tomb Raider is always slated for not being as good as the first,Tomb Raider is no longer being viewed like other games and I think most people some who havn't even played it yet have decided if they will like it or not. Also theres the Drake's Fortune game which is being compared to Tomb Raider which in itself is stupid Tomb Raider has lasted 12 years and is very successful and has one of the biggest gaming Icons in history perhaps the biggest Drake's Fortune is one game, better than Tomb Raider? Maybe on Tomb Raiders level nowhere near. So perhaps it's time we let go of everything thats gone before and go into a Tomb Raider game with an open mind.Underworld has some issues, mainly clipping and camera both are semi frequent but nowhere near a scale that removes you from the game at all, I agree there is no place for such mistakes in a game with the resources Tomb Raider no doubt has. The biggest problem is the length of the game it is rather short. The good. Beautiful graphics, the scenery is detailed and is stunning it doesn't fail to drag you into the world especially the Thailand level which is awe inspring in scale. The levels themselves are large and can take a while, the puzzles are simple yet subtle so although you may have to wrack your brain when you work it out it's a big AH HA! moment. The controls are friendly and Lara looks and moves better than ever her movements are the most natural I've ever seen in a game. Now we get to what Tomb Raider does best, The story as usual in TR is epic and interesting, The voice acting is superp and the Music is always spot on and is perfect.Overall: This is not Revolutionary at all but it really doesn't say it is or try to be. A strong platformer with story and style. Though there are camera issues and it is short. I loved it and think it shows that Lara Croft is here to stay.Suggestion: For those who want more of a challange and prefer the old Tomb Raider struggles go striaght to the player tailoring option remove all help and button icons and play on Master Survialist and try to get all treasures when playing a level, this will far stretch the games run time.

Just finished playing this last night.....I am an experienced gamer, been playing for at least 22 years now.....funnily enough I never realy played TR much before for some reason, although I do have Legend and Anniversary on the PSP. SOmeone bought me this for Christmas and I just got round to playing it...anyway, it took me 6 nights to finish the game, which I thought was probably Ok, as I'm not an experienced TR gamer. However, I can see that if you have played all the other games before you can finish it in 6-8 hours as people say, as most of the time time it takes to play the game seems to be finding the next ledge to jump to....I did make a mistake of playing on the easy setting as well....I'm not sure what difference this makes, maybe just that the shooting parts are easier, which is fine by me, as this bit tends to be an add on here from what I can gather....for FPS fans and the like, this is a poor part of the game being honest and just something you want to get over with ASAP.One of the major parts of the game is the puzzles, which are Ok in difficulty, but not that difficult that you would be stuck for ages trying to figure them out or resorting to the internet walkthroughs.....again here I am wondeirng about the fact that I played it on easy...I made the mistake several times of referring to the field assistant, which more or less tells you exactly what to do, which kind of ruined it to be honest....Graphically I would say its Ok....I can certainly see why so many men have become obsessed with Lara, she looks stunning....also the environments are pretty impressive. The only issue here is they look a bit dull after the mighty Thailand level....perhaps they should have saved this one for last?Anyway, this game doesn't deserve the bad press i feel and it certainly wets my appetite for more and also to go back and play the originals...I think I have TR3 for the PS1 somewhere......

After TRL which was fun but very dissapointing and TRA which was much more enjoyable and a true Tomb Raider game i had mixed feelings for Underworld. I can say after purchasing and playing the game im much happier and that this game despite its flaws is a true Tomb Raider game. I will state the good things about the game first.GOODThe levels were HUGE and i loved how there were different paths to take and collecting items for puzzles classic style. The graphics were excellent and the lighting was really somthing. The story was short but got the job done and im glad the whole mother story is finished. Lara also acted more like Lara :) Ledges were not as obvious this time making me think more on where to go.The puzzles were all different and pretty fun but quite simple. The enemies were all varied and the animals had great AI. I loved the options to turn of reticules and hints and the player tailoring was a great addition.BADThe camera was slightly annoying at some points. Quite a few glitches here and there that could have been sorted. Human AI really was bad. Hardly any traps in the game :( No replay level? what were they thinking? Lots of secrets to find but only measly artwork to unlock. The game felt slightly short. All in all though im pretty satisfied with the game if it were a bit longer, had more puzzles and traps and the glitches and camera were sorted id rate it 5 stars. This is what Tomb Raider should be though and i hope the next game works on the problems to make a much more epic Tomb Raider :) One other thing i have to add is that this game should never be compared to Uncharted thats a whole different game more action id say. Its a shame for people who have played Legend as their first TR as they probably get the impression that its more action orientated.

I have played the first 3 tomb raiders and anniversary.I went to the show "What stuff" in Excel London, Tomb raider - UNDERWORLD had its own stall. on Xbox 360.Not PS3.After playing Anniversary the step up in graphics is fantastic. The Demo on display was a Thailand/ Cambodia level. Visually stunning in 1080p.graphics, I can see the splashes when she kicks and the vegetation of the level is realy good, all the grass and plants move with the wind and her motion. The tomb raider model moves like a panther. she looks better than ever.( possibly her waist is over skinny, a little exagerated by the boys in Eidos, trying to create the perfect sexy goddess.I sometimes fell those boys should try going out with real women.)Game play ,hmmm levels are much more open and the controls take getting used to. in fact the sea level is immense you can swim for hours rite over to china and back. you can swim underwater also to the same distance. The change of the controls is fiddly, the gun aiming sytem can be either auto or you can aim cod4 style. I am used to PS2/ps3 so Xbox 360 controls have always felt clunky in my hand. Jumping from pillar to pillar is quite a precision thing for me in this game. they add and add more moves each game and can overcomplex things. To me Tomb raider 2 and 3 got the controls just right.I think the controls here are over sensitive. The problem is I feel , like tomb raider anniversary they may have made this game a little to difficult, like anniversary, hence the last levels are virtually impossible to beat. perhaps I am just a tad unco-ordinated.couple this with hard complex controls, this game has the potential to over challenge and ultimately frustrate. This is my only negative point.Otherwise get ready for her next adventure, I know I will !!!

I had waited months for tomb raider to come out. Now that I have got it I am impressed. The story is set more or less straight after Tomb raider legend. Lara is trying to find out more about avalon so she can discover the truth on the whereabouts of her mother. There are a few surprises along the way but nothing spectacular. It does keep you on the edge of your seat though. The levels are huge and there is normally a puzzle that you have to figure out. It will take ages because the areas are so big. As for Lara she has loads of unique moves that make the game look and feel like a next gen game. But its not just Lara that makes it next gen. Its the environments and the whole atmosphere of the game. But I feel as if all crystal dynamics have focused on is the environments. One thing that I don't like is the combat system. There really wasn't any need for it. There aren't even any boss battles which dulls the challenge. You probably will hardly ever use adrenaline mode because there is barely no use for it. Lastly, I don't appreciate the extras menu. A few measly concepts and storyboards for all the hard work and effort you have gone to to find the treasure is ridiculous but it is worth finding the treasure for the thrill of it.Overall it is an enjoyable game with stunning visuals, spectacular environments and a thrilling plot but it also feels linear tiresome and despite what crystal dynamics had promised it wasn't what I expected. It is too much the same to previous tomb raiders. After the amazing tomb raider anniversary I was expecting this to be on the same level as it, but unfortunatley is isn't. Its a marvelous adventure but areas could be improved next time.

I've played all tomb raiders (TR3 being the worst, TR2 being the best) and found this to be well worth buying but ultimately way too short. I bought the game for peanuts so grateful I didnt pay full price. The good:Graphics and sound are superb. I was very impressed.Lara's movement is a lot more fluid and less android-likeUnderwater stages have been removed altogether - mercifully this are limited to brief excursions to reach dry land rather than horrible levels like The Cistern on TR1. Makes me cringe just thinking about it.Hints - no more 'do I go back now or hope to find a hole in the wall somewhere?'For anyone who played TR Anniversary - NO BIG BOGLIN BOSS TO PULL OFF A PLATFORM EDGE with a frikking hook!!!!!!!The bad:Too short.Completed in under 10 hours I think but who's counting?Same old bugs - camera is dreadful as it's always been, not clear what is a legitimate ledge and what is part of the objective. Why cant you find weapons? Rubbish 'choice' given at start of levels.'Treasures' suck - they are all the same and lazily created. Compared to Unchartered's brilliance this is embarrassgin and no real incentive to get them all.No real gunfight battles anymore - what happened? These used to be so much fun and very difficult.Puzzles have gone from hair-pulling insanity to overly-simple push and pull fare.No croft mansion to hone skillsNo walk button, no run button - what happened? She seems more human but overall fluidty of character and physics remain unconvincingToo many bugs not enough real 'baddies' I had high hopes after the giant octopus in level 1 but, alas, no more huge beasts :-(Buy it anyway

BRILLIANT game. Clever and addictive. Very addictive. Lara is easy to control and makes you feel confident. Minor glitches in the game programming. Minor issues with camera angles, issues with responsiveness of the controls at certain parts of the game. Some controls are a little bit wierd, i.e. if using for the first time, remember: 1) R1 is granades! 2) (up) on control pad is 'medipack'! 3) When you use motor cycle, the controls switch round: L1 = Left Pistol, R1 = Right Pistol. The game story is a little bit short, I want more more more. I found most of the secrets and got most relics first time round, so now that the 'treasure hunt' option has appeared, I still feel cheated on the length of the adventure.I started it on 25 December 08, and playing on it intensively during christmas period, I finished the main story on 01 January 08.I could write LOADS about this game, because I loved it so much - I felt good controlling Lara through the obstacles, and the puzzles filled up your confidence, and the scenes resembled the true greatness of the first released Tomb Raider (in '95/'96, was it?).Crystal Dynamics: Do not change anything, just make it longer! And make sure the story line follows next time, coz anniversary does not entirely follow underworld when she left legend! (fundamental note that legend and before, she was killing ppl in the games, anniversary highlighted her first killing of a person, and then underworld seemed to continue the anniversary story?)Damn, I tried to make this a short review!!! I LOVE THIS GAME!! x

Ok so with alot of negative reviews around all pointing to an Average or Dissapointing experience i thought i would rent it and give Lara a whirl and i must say that it was the best 6 quid i have spent.lara this time round looks the best she ever has and i was very impressed buy the graphics and animations and i have to say i have played every Tomb Raider game...AOD being the worst EVER!!!The levels are amazing and ultra detailed and Thailand was truly the best looking level i have seen in a while and found myself wanting to jump in for a holiday there ha ha. This is one of the first games i have bought that i just had to complete and it kept me wanting more. The camera only messsed up twiceand the game crashed once but overall that was no big deal and i can't say i had came accross any major glitch's (maybe i was lucky) I will say that the game should be twice as long but its not mega short i got three 5 hour evening sessions out of it. The biggest negative for me was that they recycled 2 levels and you play them twice..the beggining burning manor level is played twice, once as you start then again later..also the ship is used twice..the first one sinks and the second is its "sister" ship which was a cop out for Crystal Dynamics.TR: Underworld is a good addition i just hope they make it bigger next time round, i think the Xbox was responsible for the short game as they get an extra 6 hours worth of DLC which if you add to the main game makes a full experience.

It's pretty clear that the people who slate this are like massive tomb raider fans beasue i've played this, yes it does have downsides but loads gd ones!!! It finishes the story from Tomb Raider Legend and now i feel complte! ha Btw people i can't spell very well ha! Anyway, the first level is meant to look a bit fuzzy, thats what fire makes images look like! And yes theres features that this version does'nt have like the kraken, u don't even need to shoot him lol, and yes you kill about 14 things in the whole game, and yes there are very long corridors all over the game, but tbh i prefer them than stupid loading screens! The videos are a bit low quality but who cares!! Why do people keep comaplinging! They put it on to ps2 so we don't need a ps3 to play it!Serious people! It's a gd game, and omg! People keep going on about the moody colours of whatever, for people who have played Legend it appears the same as Icey level, and theres a tropical level that looks like peru! What colours do people think they will see with rock! I mean they have a pretty wild palete of colours for rocks, but peopl,e wirrting these reviews think everything should appear neon :I lolAnd i bought a pre owener version, which didd'nt let me save i think that problem has been ressolved, so even tho i complted the game in about 5 hours cuase i knew this, i will buy it again! :D!!Congrats if you read all of that and understood what i wrote :)!GD GAME BUY IT, ADD IT 2 UR COLLECTION :)!!!!!

I completed Tomb Raider Underworld today and felt compelled to write a review. There's been a lot of negative publicity around this game, and I can't help but think that most of it must have been written by people who haven't played it. TR Underworld is a fantastic game that gets better and better as you progress through the levels, many of which are very long and challenging. The graphics are gorgeous and Lara looks better than ever, especially in her movements. The puzzles were tough to crack, forcing me to consult online walkthroughs several times, but always logical and fulfilling. OK, so there are a few times when the camera angle goes haywire, and the swimming levels - and to a lesser degree the bike levels - are a bit of a pain. But overall I found myself utterly gripped and compelled to keep on playing - on one occasion putting in a six-hour session that left my head spinning. The final few levels, when you find yourself in possession of an incredible weapon that is great fun to wield, are amazing and the atmosphere throughout is absorbing. I felt a mixture of elation and disappointment when I finished it - disappointment that it was all over. Finally, I'm really happy they got rid of the annoying boss fights from previous games. The amount of combat is now just right. Overally, TR Underworld is a game that I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a fun, absorbing one-player game. Lara has still got it. Don't listen to the naysayers.

I bought this game because I'd been watching a lot of Relic Hunter re-runs with my wife and felt an urge to play something similar so I checked out TR:U since I only have a Wii. Despite many bad reviews on the web of this game, I decided to go with it over Anniversary as I wanted a new Tomb Raider story, rather than a remake of a game I played when it was originally released (although I'm told Anniversary has some new/different bits). Anyway, I was enjoying this game a lot, couldn't see why there was so much negativity about it either. The only problem is that I was unfortunate enough to buy one of the glitched versions of this game. I got stuck in the Thailand level and after a quick Google,it turns out this game has a ton of bugs on the Wii - ones that can ruin the game, not just little things.I found one of the common bugs where a lever you need to pull to end the level just isn't there. And without it I can't move on or ever complete the game. There's no option to restart levels and I only made one save game (why would I even think I'd need to make backups??). So the only choices I have now are to start the game over again, or to download someone else's save game (that isn't glitched) and use that to continue the game.So in conclusion - I recommend the game based on the game content and playability, but I caution people to make multiple saves during their progress just in case you buy one of the bugged games that escaped the recall.

This is a good Tomb Raider adventure that returns to the roots of the original by having Lara explore the tombs, caves and forests in solitude, which is quite a relaxing experience. Encounters with animals and humans is rare so you don't have to worry too much about shooting stuff and losing health. Some of the puzzles are cool and require some thought just like what made the older games so great. The amount of bad reviews the game has gotten here isn't very surprising, as this PS2 version is kind of like the red-headed stepchild version as it obviously hasnt been given much attention. There are alot of glitches and strange happenings which might irritate some people, but I see it more like watching a bad B-Movie and laughing at the mistakes and poor quality of the film. Like for example, there is a part near the beginning of the game where you encounter the Kraken (large octopus creature) and in this version, it does not move, it just sits there, stagnant. If you swim up to it and touch it then you just suddenly die. Probably the laziest programming i've seen in a game, but still I couldn't help but laugh.

First of all, I am one of the biggest Tomb Raider fans in the world.I have all the games, and because of work, etc. I don't play so much anymore, BUT I always buy and play Tomb Raider. This is what I expected Tomb Raider Anniversary (the previous TR game) to be like, and it wasn't. It was then rather disappointing. Tomb Raider Underworld is beautiful and fun!!The automatic changing of camera angles can be annoying, so I unfortunately have to agree about that, however, it does not affect the fun factor of the game at all, at least for me.The graphics are really stunning and at times, I enjoyed just leaving it on and enjoying the view, especially at the beginning of the Thailand level.I know I could play it again, and once again have fun!The music is great as well, and reminds me a bit of "Batman Begins" with a hint of "Matrix".You have to appreciate the attempt to create a piece of art, which is also fun. There are enough "rough" games, or such that are impressive on the surface.TR Underworld is a delight and I hope that future TR games will be more along these lines, just with new adventures.
