Bright blue skies are a staple of Sega games and now they can be seen above the sun-drenched city of London. At last! Yes, glorious weather, immaculate streets without a burning car, looted shop or persistent beggar in sight, venues packed with spectators delighted with the service on offer - this is probably a vision only Sega and Seb Coe could have of the London 2012 Olympic Games at the time of writing. The first Mario & Sonic Olympics release had it easy, realising the once impossible dream of bringing together Nintendo and Sega's world-famous mascots and former arch rivals for the first time. It was always going to be a hit (even though it made sense to nobody that Sonic could be beaten by Mario in a sprint). Then the second game added snow, and, as everyone knows, adding snow to a videogame makes it approximately 461 times better. Along with a host of new winter events (curling was so awesome), it helped make Mario & Sonic at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games feel like an entirely new experience. The third title is a tougher sell and I'd wrongly assumed this review would write itself in one sentence: 'As good as ever, but don't bother if you have the original game.' That statement is half-true. The first half.Right from the attract sequence that depicts the gang on a red bus passing famous London landmarks, you're in a happy place and this game is already on its way to earning a bonus star from most Brits. Then there's London Party Mode, which is where you and your family will be spending a lot of time. If you like Mario Party, you'll love this. Up to four participants run around the streets of a mini London in topdown mode, featuring the likes of the London Eye and Buckingham Palace. The first objective is Free Mode where you seek various Mario and Sonic characters who'll put everyone in an event to compete for stickers. There are exclusive bonus minigames here, including one called 'Go Away Boo!' which is basically a variant of Pac-man with Mario and Sonic characters being chased around London by Boos. And that, in a nutshell, is how you automatically earn five stars from me. Soon Big Ben will chime and it's time for a major event. The party goes on until someone has collected enough stickers to fill their book. Party games get plenty of flack, and I'm quite the gaming snob myself, but if you're looking for a game to get the family together around the Wii on Christmas Day and get everyone in a good mood, this is up there with the best recommendations.Familiar disciplines have had an upgrade. Throwing events, for instance, are now more intuitive than before. On top of that there's a selection of newcomers. Football is the headliner. Whisper it, but in some ways it's more fun than recent FIFA and PES titles in a stripped down kind-of-way. Hold the remote horizontally (nunchuck control is optional) and you've got direction, tackle, pass and shoot buttons. No strategy menus to deal with, just five-a-side fun. It really does work well, not a million miles away from a cutdown version of Mario Strikers Charged. Something else that should please everyone is that all events are unlocked from the start.Dream events are back. Among them is the Dream Long Jump, which has a backdrop straight out of Yoshi's Story and reminds me a little of multiplayer New Super Mario Bros Wii. Elsewhere there's a bit of Super Monkey Ball-esque racing. You won't be left wanting for fanservice or diversity. As with the regular events, when you're not trying to beat your family, you're co-operating, as in the Dream Rafting where you all have to keep balance of the raft together.Perhaps noticing the popularity of Dream Events in previous games, power moves now play a big part in the regular disciplines. Olympic purists may disapprove, and with good reason because events such as table tennis and badminton are regularly settled by power shots. It's moments like this where you also regret that Sega hasn't moved on to Motionplus controls. These racquet sports in particular feel a bit 2006. As for fencing, well, I didn't even get what was going on, only that a lot of random waggling and button presses should see you through to victory as well as any tactic. With so much on offer, though, it's greedy to expect all of it to be perfect.Three Games in and the dream team franchise is still going strong as a multiplayer get-together and a contemporary Track & Field revival with button bashing replaced by Remote swinging. And when it comes to other Olympics tie-ins and cash-ins released next year, expect Mario & Sonic to take the gold medal on gameplay alone. Best isn't always simple, but simple's always best.

With the Olympics almost upon us, it was inevitable that Sega would bring another Mario & Sonic title our way. This time they have completely re-invented the formula by introducing simplistic interpretations of various sports with even simpler controls and little to attract single players....oh, hang on....I'm sorry, I don't mean to be so critical and if you've looked at my rating I do like this game. It's a pretty slick package and is every bit as good as the previous games in the series, but originality is not its strength. Sega have at least crammed in a lot of diverse sports and with that comes a greater variety in control types, most of which work pretty well. This has also led to less reliance on frantically waggling around a Wii remote and more on using buttons and the D-pad, which is not unwelcome bearing in mind how frustrating motion controls can be (there's no support for Nintendo's lame duck MotionPlus here either). The athletics side of the game is arguably the weakest. By including football, equestrian, synchronised swimming, rhythm gymnastics, beach volleyball and more it highlights just how slight and unsatisfying running races can be. There are loads of Dream Events (Sega's attempt to fuse sport with the wacky world of Mario & Sonic) as well, many of which are a bit nuts but pretty good fun nonetheless. You can play single events with up to four local players. It's a shame that there is no option to play through an organised series of events (a problem in

This is a really fun game, and a great alternative to Wii Sports (Resort) for kids who want something a little more crazy. There are dozens of games and twenty characters to choose from, and in many games they have their own special moves - which will really amuse and amaze you the first time you see them. For example, table-tennis and badminton are so much more entertaining than the more "professional" true-to-life versions of tennis/table-tennis on Wii Sports (Resort). Each character has a unique personality, and my 5-year old daughter even prefers the game characters to her own painstakingly created Mii characters (although you can use these too)Some of the best games in the "Events" sectionare the obscure ones - rhythmic gymnastics and synchronised swimming are especially imaginative and good fun and there are loads of fun little games in the "Dream" section, some are impressive 3D graphical games like dream discus and dream rafting - but we particularly love the simple 2D "dream uneven bars" which is VERY addictive, especially in multiplayer-mode, once you get the hang of it.The whole game is beautifully presented with high quality animation sequences in game intros, award ceremonies etc. And this game really will teach a 5-year old about some of the more obscure olympic events (at least in the events section)Not perhaps for serious adults, but a great fun addition to a Wii Sports bundle otherwise

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games creates an atmosphere of a sporting spectacle at the comfort of your own home. The London Olympics promises to be exciting and we are not far the Olympic. The Wii game is entertaining and fun game to play as a family or with a group of friends. It is thoroughly enjoyable as there are so many events to participate in true Olympic mode with your favourite Mario characters. It is definitely significant improvement from the previous Olympics game, as the controls are much easier after a period of practise. I was really hooked to the game for long periods. To be honest, it does knackers your hands as there is so much controlling involves, but it is worth as it can achieve the desire results of claiming a medal and seeing the character in the medal ceremony. I enjoy all the events featured in the game. There are options of playing as single match or as a tournament to compete. It is definitely game worth trying. The whole family would enjoy the game. Wii promotes family entertainment and this is perfect example of this. I love the game and am glad to include in my collection.

I can't praise this game enough for how long I actually managed to play it. I bought this in the midst of last year's Olympic fever and found most events it offers to be very fun to play. I was surprised at how long I played on this game for the few weeks after I got it, as I normally get quite bored quite quickly. This is definitely a family game and while it can be enjoyed by a solo player, the experience is much enhanced by the addition of siblings, parents or even grandparents. (The latter generally adds entertainment value - watch as Grandma falls off a horse at the equestrian event for the fifth time!)The range of characters available is the same as that on the 2010 Winter Olympics game which is a good selection.Plus there is the option to play as your miis which you can dress up in many outfits including some made to make your mii look like Mario and Sonic characters. This game is much better than its two predecessors and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a bit of wii gaming fun or to parents who want to keep the kids out of the way for a bit. Happy gaming.

Mario and Sonic games with a certain level of expectation. You expect them to be good, so anything less than that is a failure. The Olympic series has allowed Nintendo and Sega to create some fun games and try different techniques of game play along the way. Some work, some don't.On this occasion, for example, all the games are unlocked at the beginning, so no waiting before being allowed to run a relay. There is also a token effort at a contest, the London Party, which combines interactive maps, quizzes and contests with tedious skipping through speech bubbles and storylines. But what we come for is the events. The old favourites of track and field are there. Trampolining has been tweaked, but the Dream Event is more like the old version. Equestrian makes an appearance, perhaps to make the game more appealing to girls, along with Rhythmic Gymnastics, based on the Winter Ice Skating gameplay. Some of these new games will take a bit of getting used to, but once again it's a game that you can play with your daughter and your granny at the same time.

So I just noticed Mario & Sonic Olympics is the number 2 selling game on Amazon. Wahoo for Sega, as Wario likes to say and wahoo for me. I picked this game up at a steal price of £24.99. Thats true Mario coinage! When playing this game, you need to play it in the mindset of a 5 year old. So bash that controller hard on the ground when you fail at badminton. Throw the controller through a neighbour's window when you drown in aquatics. Cry at Mummy and Daddy hysterically when Mario threatens you with his big pointy stick in table tenns. There's enough good mini games here to keep any person from ages 2-80 interested. My personal fav is SOCCER which is brand new addition and much better than Fifa. You can play 4 players at anytime. BEST WII GAME of 2011!! DO NOT MISS OUT!!! Or your kid will hate you. HAPPY KIDS NEED THIS GAME!!

I bought this for my daughters' 6th birthday, wanted a game that her 3yr old brother could also join in. Absolutely fab, they have both been on it so much, the events are fairly quick so no time to get bored. Many events are multi-player so they can compete together, and although some are a bit more difficult for them to get the 'hang of' as far as they are concerned they are doing the events, so they are very happy. The dream events are brilliant too, and have been played, although I think the "London Party" bit is a bit too complicated for my 3-year old, but my 6 year old, loves looking at the sights of London. All in all, a fantastic game.

I wanted to treat my children to a new game, my problem is that one is 8 years old and has high expectations, the other is 4 years old and has additional difficulties. I read lots of reviews and looked at lots of games. This one is perfect. There is no frustration caused by having to earn the games, it was all available straight away. A couple of the games are harder for my 4 year old but it won't take too long for the controls to be mastered. Generally if you aren't sure what to do just wave the controller about press a couple of random buttons and see what happens. Hours of fun on a rainy day :-)

X'mas present as Mario never failed me!My sons and my husband have so much fun with this game. great design, for adult it is like a true olympic game even with reply and award ceremony, for toddles, not only having fun also learning the games rules and getting to know more sports, like fencing... also for never be ruled children , there is dream section which strech out the imagnation of sports. oh, don't forget the london party bits. collecting stickers? no matter how old you are, stickers never failed. great game for a droppy winter, having fun and get excises at the same time, why not?

We bought this game as it would be a shame to leave it as we're hosting the games (!!!), and because of some fantastic reviews. We don't normally buy Mario & Sonic, but we thought we'd give it a go.It explains all the games extremely well, and has a wide variaties, including 'London Party', 'Dreamland' and actual played games. I personally prefer the actual played games, but that's just me. I'm eleven, and my sister's thirteen, so there's quite an age difference, and we both love it, and even my parents like it too! I really reccommend it. Happy Playing! :)

I bought this for my 12 year old daughter and she loves it. We also play as a family which has been great fun. There is a good variety of games to keep everyone amuzed, some easy, and some not so. Our favourites are equestrian, shooting and syncronised swimming. My daughter also loves the way you can collect stickers and awards for outfits for your characters. We loved this game so much we bought it as a birthday present for my niece who has played it over and over again. Would recommend for all ages as my neighbours children who are 5 and 3 also enjoy it.

13.5.2012

Good fun for all the family, all ages! A varied selection of games to play, the controls are not too difficult to learn and we all soon were able to play most of the games. The graphics were of quality standard and even on multi player games it was not too hard to distinguish what your character was doing. There are the usual options of single/team play, also single games or tournament 'London Party' - this is the only part of the games I find difficult - to see and control the character on the map. Over all a lot of fun to be had!

16.3.2013

This game provides hours of fun; when I first played on this game I played for ages! There is so much to do and it becomes mildly addictive after a while. The characters are great and the graphics are impeccable. The events are great fun especially the dream events - dream horseriding, dream discus, dream rafting, etc. I also like the fact that you can play as a team and choose whether you want to play with or against your opponents.I would recommend this game for fans of Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario Bros.

9.5.2012

My 4.5 year old son is obsessed with Mario & LOVES LOVES LOVES this game! It's not the best made multi-player game, with the controls being a bit tricky, and also there is alot of writing/instructions that has to be read aloud to my 4.5 year old. But overall it's alot of fun, and it's great to run around London seeing all the land-marks. It also has lots of great mini games, so good for a short/quick play, (as i don't let my son play for hours!) Good fun & is getting us excited about the olympics!
