A well made and good looking camera. It feels and looks robust.A little larger than a normal compact camera its almost getting into DSLR territory. Its main selling point is the zoom range which is the equivalent to a whopping 24mm - 600mm on a 35mm camera - a staggering range for any camera. Its a huge 25x zoom. And this is an optical zoom not a rubbish digital zoom as used by a lot of compact cameras.Lens aperture range is also very good at f2.5 - f5.6 - really very good at the long end of the zoom.ISO range is a vey acceptable 100 - 12,800. Perfectly usable for most users altougth at the higher end there is some noticeable noise.Burst shot speed comes in at 5.9fps - again perfectly acceptablefor most users.Jpeg is the standard shooting format but it can also shoot in raw and has a raw + jpeg mode. For video users it shoots full HD at up to 60fps.In use it was relatively easy to use once you get used to the various functions and how to use them. It is a case of having to read the manual first. There is no inbuilt viewfinder. I found this rather difficult to get used to. You have to use the rear viewscreen. In addition it isnt a vari-angle screen but has a tilt mechanism. Some may find this ok but I found this rather difficult to get used too, especially the high end of the zoom where the image can move about very quickly. There is a solution to this in the optional extra EVF-DC1 electronic viewfinder which clips on to the top like a traditional viewfinder. This will set you back more than £200 if your want it.Image quality is as you would expect very good. It is lacking a little at the extreme ends of the zoom range but all images are perfectly acceptable for a compact camera. If you are used to a DSLR you might notice some differences in image quality.Overall a very nice camera but it starts to get a little expensive when you add in the optional viewfinder, which in my case I felt it was essential to have.

I've been a huge fan of Canon's bridge cameras in their various incarnations, including the PowerShot SX50 HS. I've tried a DSLR but, whilst pleased with the image quality, I felt somewhat hampered by having to carry around extra lenses, especially when traveling abroad. The SX50 HS has a massive zoom range but, for me, the obvious weakness (especially in the light of recent introductions by competitors) is the 12.1 MP 1/2.3 inch image processor. In macro and 'normal' zoom ranges this image processor did a pretty good job but towards the maximum 1200 mm zoom, image quality was poor. I looked at the Canon PowerShot SX60 HS when it was introduced but professional reviews didn't convince me that this would offer a significant improvement in image quality. However, late 2015-early 2016, rumours began to emerge of Canon developing a bridge camera using its 1-inch sensor. Six months down the line, enter the Canon PowerShot G3X. Professional reviews told me that this camera offered a significant step-up in image quality (I always research new cameras before even considering a new purchase). The main drawbacks to this camera were the price and the lack of an EVF (electronic viewfinder). However, the latter can be overcome by the purchase of Canon EVF-DC1 Viewfinder which fits to the accessory shoe of the camera - this helps when holding the camera steady towards the limits of the zoom range. So, I took the plunge and bought the camera and EVF and have now tested the pairing over several weeks. From the results so far, I'm hugely pleased: the quality of images, especially high zoom shots, are a significant improvement, the display screen has a spectacular resolution (as a consequence, I've hardly used the EVF) and the added functionality of the display screen is also very welcome. This camera is noticeably heavier than the SX50 HS but it also feels more robust.

This is indeed a great (not so) little camera! I have to say as a life-long Nikon user (home and work) that this is my first ever Canon - and I am very happy to have done a little brand switching!I am not going to extol the G3 X's technical virtues - better men have done so already, better than I could.I just want to lodge one main point, a criticism of course, that in my view does detract from what otherwise would be a 5 star product. The lack of view finder! In bright sunlight this is a compromise too far and renders the camera in terms of classic composition almost useless. I know that one can be bought and attached but this is a hefty investment in its own right and then in terms of added bulk makes an already bulky compact decidedly big.A bit self-defeating! Have had a look at the G5 X and, as someone who does not take video, have had to repress feelings of "Did I do the right thing?". Still think I did but a camera at this price should produce feelings solely of irrepressible pleasure. Might treat myself to the G5 anyway...........

An excellent camera overall, takes pictures every bit as good as my old Pentax K20D with fewer lens artifacts and distortions in a much smaller, lighter package. Why only 4 stars: it's too easy to set the autofocus onto the wrong subject/area by accidentally touching the screen whilst moving it or positioning the camera. By the time you've adjusted the settings (difficult to do if you are holding the camera aloft etc) you miss the shot.

Feels good in the hand and have had excellent results. Mainly motivated to buy it for the superzoom lens which has opened up all sorts of new possibilities, without the hassle of changing lenses. Getting too old for that!

A brilliant camera with superb image quality and with a 24-600mm zoom great for nature and landscape photography. Only let down by fairly slow shoting speed and benefits from the addition of the additional EVF.

This is a great camera. The quality of the images - even at 600mm - is simply breathtaking. The all (mostly) metal construction is very reassuring and it has masses of features and flexibility.

I've owned many cameras this one fits all purposes great one body one lens and away you go crystal clear shots and even night moon and star shoots are superb can't fault this bit of kit

Fantastic zoom while maintaining great photo quality. Would be 5* if had a built in view-finder. (I know you can buy one to use with this camera, but that is way too expensive.)

Bought as an upgrade for a Canon GX1 Mark 11. The Camera is easy to use with great features. Telephoto lens works really well and is very smooth to operate.

This camera is a quality piece of kit. I am by no means a photographer, but find this very easy to use and produce stunning pictures and videos.
