Over the years I have tried a fair number of electric shavers and have always found myself reverting to a wet shave following disappointment in the results. On reading about the features offered by the Braun 5140; wet or dry, the option to use shaving foam or in the shower I was hopeful that this could finally be the product to keep me from the manual razor. As is typical of a Braun product the shaver is well packaged, although the contents (shaver, charging plug, protective cap, cleaning brush, user manual) were well short of filling the box to capacity. While I feel capable of wielding a shaver straight from the box, I was drawn to the 140 page manual.Something of this size must have some relevant details which may be important and I was keen to find out more about using with shaving foam or in the shower. On closer examination of the manual I soon found that my hope of it containing any useful information had been misplaced. The English language section was just 5 pages long with a further 2 pages at the front illustrating the 5 series range (at least I had plenty of time to determine which of the illustrations were for features on another model as I was not going to have to read all 140 pages). Nowhere in the manual was there any mention of using shaving foam or using in the shower, the shaving tips section even stated “always shave before washing your face”. I was beginning to think this was not the product I had previously read about. The shaver itself feels really comfortable and sturdy in the hand and seems well made. The unit is quick to charge and appears to retain power well. It will obviously depend on how long you use the device, however, I found I was getting at least 2 weeks before I even needed to think about recharging. On first use I kept things simple; basic dry shave with 1 day stubble. Initial impressions were very good, the flexible head was excellent and no matter what the angle it was held the foil seemed to be in constant contact with my face. The results seemed to be impressive with the added bonus of not experiencing the painful shaving rash which I normally suffer. Unfortunately before long I realised that the finish was not as smooth or constant as I had thought and I had missed several spot particularly under the jaw line. Next day, after paying extra attention to the awkward spots I was rewarded with a smooth consistent shave. Next challenge, how would it cope with a few days growth? Once again, providing sufficient time and attention is given the results are excellent, with the shaver powering through with ease. The shaver is easy to clean, simply tap to clear the cassette or run under the tap (it would have been nice if the recommended light machine oil had been included). With shaving foam – I have to confess to being dubious about this, however I sparingly applied some shaving gel and was surprised at how the shaver appeared to not be negatively affected. After a while I noticed that the foam appeared to be clogging the foil and the shaver was not cutting very well. A quick rinse under the tap the foil was clear and the shaver was working again, unfortunately despite attempting to shake the water out of the shaver it was dripping everywhere as I continued to shave. In all I had to rinse the foil three times during the shave and by the end had water, foam etc dripping everywhere. While the shaver may work with foam or when wet, I couldn’t recommend it; it’s much harder to check that you haven’t missed bits then you have to clear up the mess which has been dripping from the shaver. In conclusion, as a basic dry shaver I would highly recommend the Braun 5 series. While it can’t match the closeness of a wet razor, with a little perseverance it produces an excellent close shave even in the awkward spots. Add to that the fact that I’m still to experience any form of shaving rash and I certainly won’t be reverting back to a razor any time soon. As for the wet use or with foam, well while I may not have been impressed the shaver shines without the need of these gimmicks. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

In the box, the Braun 5140s comes with a two pin charging wall plug, instructions booklet and a protective cap.The Braun 5140s shaver feels very solid in the hand. It's elegant design and well-made construction shows it means some serious business. This is a wet/dry shaver, so it can be used at the sink or in the shower. There is a locking mechanism that allows the user to lock or release the trimmer head. It has a separate pop-up trimmer on the back side and a single power button on the front side. It also has LEDs to show battery level. In the past, I have used several rotary electric shavers but I have always been somewhat frustrated and disappointed with the final results.Despite spending twice as long as a with a traditional manual wet razor, rotary shavers for me failed to give a close smooth shave and instead have left patchy stubble areas on my face especially around the chin and neck areas. The longer you run rotary shavers the hotter the blades become resulting in a uncomfortable and painful shave. It is thus I have always gone back to a manual razor. The Braun 5 series 5140s wet and dry foil shaver boasts some head turning advance technology featuring AutoSensing motor, 8 Direction Comfort head, MicroMotion, MacroMotion, ActiLift Trimmer and 2 SensoFoil blades. The Braun 5140s was my first ever foil type electric shaver. I was somewhat skeptical due to my history with electric shavers, but I was pleasantly surprised. The series 5 shaver is well built, has a comfortable grip and has an ergonomically design which fits well in the hand. The battery of the Braun 5140s comes completely flat out of the box and I therefore had to use the enclosed wall charger to charge the shaver before I could give it a test drive. It took about an hour to fully charge the Braun 5140s and immediately upon powering the shaver i could tell the sheer power of it's motor. The vibrations of the motor left my hand numb after ten minutes of use and boy this is a very noisy shaver as a result in comparison to my rotary electric shavers. The Braun 5140s gave a remarkable smooth and very comfortable shave. Admittedly, I had to go over areas a few times to get a smooth shave but the end results were impressive. There was no skin irritation and no nicks or cuts to the face especially around the neck and chin areas. I have now been using the Braun 5140s shaver daily for over the past two weeks and as of yet, have not needed to charge the battery since it's initial charge. The 5140s is extremely easy and quick to clean- you simply run the shaver blades under a running tap! In conclusion, it has been a pleasure to use the Braun series 5 5140s electric shaver on a daily basis. The Braun Series 5 didn't cause any irritation, it was so smooth against my face and performed perfectly. The line from the throat to under the jaw is the most difficult place to shave, however the pivotal design of the Braun 5140s permits it for a closer following of facial contours which results in a Closer contact for a smoother shave. With it's impressive battery life and the convenience of built-in pop up smart trimmer, the Braun series 5 5140s is a must have for the busy man. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

I'm a bit of a flirt when it comes to razors - I've used a number of different brands of electric razor over the years, foil and rotary, and every now and then I'll turn to the wet shave for a change. The Braun 5140s Wet and Dry shaver is at the top end of the electric razors I've used, and boy is the difference obvious!Out of the box there is the shaver itself, the usual cleaning brush, protection cap and power cable (I always seem to lose the protection caps after a few trips with my electric shavers, so I'm going to have to work on that or keep this one safely in the bathroom!). Anyway, you have the basics (I believe there is the option to pay a bit extra and get the shaver with a charging base if you prefer that).I don't know how many languages most people know, but the instruction booklet includes plenty of them (so clearly this is a product that travels the globe looking for a home). Having read the instruction, much of it was common sense. Charging takes an hour for almost the same time in use. The shaver is totally waterproof (so nice and easy to clean under the tap - probably best not to go diving with it though). It has a removable head (no shaver stays sharp forever sadly) which can be left to move freely or locked into set positions if you prefer. So to the shave. As you'd expect for the price, this is not a shaver that is going to leave you with an unwanted designer stubble. Its as close a shave as any electric shave I've ever had (but lets face it, nothing electric ever gets as close as a barber wet shave - anyone telling you different is fibbing), and (as I mentioned at the start) when I fancy a wet shave, I now have the option of the old blade or the Braun electric to have a wet shave with the soap - nice! The product blurb says that the shaver uses technology to read the beard and adjust, giving that closer, smoother shave. The detail of that goes over my head, but the closeness of the shave is very noticeable. There is the usual slide up trimmer for those who like sculpting a beard (I don't, so that for me is used just to get the even cut on the sides and the odd nosehair). To round up, a quality product, smooth and close wet or dry shave that really is worth the extra few pounds over a run of the mill alternative, and waterproof so you won't actually destroy it when it gets its head wet. I highly recommend you give it a go. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Ok I’m a sceptic at the best of times when it comes to electric razors. I’ve spent a fortune in the past on products clamming to be able to work with my very sensitive skin. All have disappointed me and I have felt each purchase in my pocket. The Braun Series 5 promises to protect my sensitive skin with its comfort flexhead that has 8 directional movement designed to minimise pressure. It has two ‘SensoFoils’ that are sensitive to skin also and is equipped with a middle trimmer that deals with difficult hairs. The head of the Series 5 has an auto sensing motor that adapts to your hair. My favourite feature is that this razor is 100% waterproof so can be used for both wet and dry shaves as well as in the shower or even the bath.So now you know what it’s supposed to do here are my thoughts. I had low expectations for this razor having never found an electric razor that didn’t leave my skin sore and bleeding. It’s a simple and sleek design with only three hand activated features. The first is the on and off switch and the next situated just above the first is a locking switch that holds the head of the razor in one fixed position or releases it to move freely as you move the razor about your face. The last finger activated feature is a precision trimmer on the rear of the razor for those hard to reach places. I used it first in the shower with a few days growth the razor did well and seemed far better than I expected. It was smooth and easy. Since my first use I have used it every 48 hours and feel like this is the best method for me. I’ve not suffered any bleeding or soreness at all. The charge lasts well with a full charge after every 5 shaves. The shave is not as close as it is with a wet shave razor of course but let’s get real here, this was the best shave I have had with an electronic razor. The sensitive shave is the best part. I was expecting to supper a raw neck and days of pain but it glides over the most sensitive areas of my face like a hot knife through butter. Over all this is a great razor that is kind to my skin while offering a great close shave and charges in one hour. What more could a guy ask for? [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Ok starting with the shaver itself and what you get. It comes neatly packaged with a cleaning brush, a standard charger, head guard and the shaver itself, everything you need to maintain and look after your shaver on the go.The shaver itself fits very comfortably in your hand thanks to its rubber grip coating the design is finished off with a smooth shiny sections that gives it a very classy expensive look but these sections do make it a bit of a fingerprint magnet. Now for the job it needs to do! It would be worth giving you a brief description of the Tuff job it has ahead of it with my skin type and hair type,I have very coarse curly hair with quite sensitive skin so too much up and down motions to cut missed hairs would cause me to have sore spotty skin which fortunately this isn't the case with the Braun series 5 shaver it cuts very quickly cleanly and with the motion heads it keeps a close cut in one stroke regardless of lumps bumps and Contours of your face including your chin and neck this minimises the need to go over sections you've already cut.Quality of cut! This is the important one we all want to spend less time shaving and more time doing other stuff and my new Braun shaver let's me do just that, I'm happy to report that everything about this shaver makes my life easier and faster, It it will charge in around a hour and iv not had to recharge it in 4 days, using it once for a big shave, 3 morning touch ups and a night out shave. Is it a close cut your asking?Yes in a nut shell, I had no problem getting a close shave on any area of my face including my problem areas being my jawline and neck.Bad points. To add an "s" to the word points is a bit unfair as I only have one complaint and is a minor one and that's that the trimer is not as fine cutting as I would like it to be, making it hard to do detail lines. This might just be the case with my hair type but given that the Braun performs so well from the get go this is just a very minor thing that brings the mark down a tad.I love this shaver and I think you would to. Well I’ve never done that before! Was my first thought. An electric shave with shaving cream and water. Whilst the Braun 5140s claims to give a very close shave and even in the hard to reach places with wet or dry shaving I needed to try it out for my self. I resorted to the half’n half Technique of one wet and one dry side of my face. Excuse the photo I was getting ready for work so was pushed for time. The dry shave was pleasantly surprising especially after I mastered the lock for the rotating head and managed to get into the top of lip and nose and areas on the chin line. It started to feel a lot like other electric razors when I noticed I was missing some of the finer hairs on the neck. But after a few nifty reverse movements I had a pretty soft chin and a clean shave. Then into the wet shave. Would it work? Would it kill me? Answers are Yes and No and by the fact you are reading this it was in that order too. It seemed strange at first but there was hardly any snagging or pulling and shaving felt very comfortable. I managed to overcome my fears of electric and water easily after rinsing clean every few seconds and was amazed at the shaving experience. Not only was the shave close and smooth but somehow deeper as some 5 hrs on still smooth on the wet side and a little rough on the dry side. The ultimate test was the Daughter number 2 snuggle. Braving the fear of stubble she stepped up to the plate and assessed the shave with a cheek to cheek face rub. Judgement was a very smooth shave and she also preferred the wet side. So much so that daughters number 1&3 has to test it for themselves to. I even mater the accurate and lengthy grimmer which gave a very sharp finish to the burns and even managed a bit of ear hair too!The only criticism I could share is that it was a little on the cumbersome side. Whether it was the size of the handle the weight or my little hands I am not sure. But a small price to pay for a good shave. For me this is a great shaver and I am looking forward to testing again tomorrow morning. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Until about a year ago I was a long time user of a wet razer, every day without fail. I've always had very sensitive skin, so struggled along with it, but didn't think electric shavers were up to the job.I decided to try eventually and bought a lower end Braun model, I was amazed by how good a job this did in terms of, ease comfort and closeness (when used in water with shaving gel). I never turned back.So I was very keen to try out this new Series 5 Braun shaver and see if it could possibly improve on the one I had.I have to say, after a week of using it, I think it has! It's made me realise that although my old shaver was good, it did have some minor negatives, such as not catching all the hairs on my neck and maybe not being as comfortable as it could be. When I tried this razor I was amazed how smoothly it glides over my skin, I got very little irritation before when using it wet, but with this I get absolutely none at all.On top of that, the moving head (that the old razor didn't have) makes a bigger difference than I expected and does a good job of getting into all the more difficult areas, like round my neck.As with my old model, it gives a very close shave, as good as could be expected really. It feels as good as a wet shave with a razor initially and the only thing you notice is that the stubble starts to be felt earlier in the day than if I had had a wet shave, but that's a very small price to pay and one I'll happily live with for the convenience and comfort.I also think the battery lasts longer in this model, a minor thing, but still. It would be nice if it had a charging dock and travel case, rather than just a cable, but I can live with that (and I believe there are versions out there of this model that do come with this). It's also a little bit more bulky to take away with me than my old shaver and I worry the movable head seems a little bit fragile, especially without a case to protect it, we'll see over time I guess. I've been using the Braun series 5 for a week now and I must say it's the best electric shaver I have used to date. When I unboxed the day it arrived I wasn't disappointed in the feel and quality of the product. It feels well built. After I gave it a charge I got ready to go have a shave as I hadn't had one in a few days. As soon as I turned it on the sound of the motor surprised me, really powerful sounding which gave me high hopes. It dealt with my stubble really well considering how much I had. Didn't give me a smooth shave but I expected that. I missed a day out before I used it again and it dealt with my 2 day stubble perfectly and left me with as smooth a shave as I could have hoped to get from an electric shaver. The Braun series 5 5140s is a great piece of shaving engineering the fact I can use it wet or dry, clean it with the accompanying brush or just run it under water and still be able to use it without having to wait for it to dry is by far the best feature. The styling trimmer had one little flaw that it didn't extend up past the main shaver head so actually getting a good view of the trimmer is difficult. I have been using the Braun series 5 daily since then and I'm happy with the results and I still don't feel the need to use a razor blade to get a clean shave. If your looking at buying an electric shaver for yourself or as a gift I would recommend this one over the other shavers I've owned. It leaves a great shave and I've had no skin irritations or redness since I've used the Braun 5140s. I was really lazy at shaving before using this shaver it felt like a chore but not anymore. I can definitely say I loved this product and its even made my wife happy she doesn't have to nag me to shave. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

I got this shaver to replace a rotary head shaver that I bought that was very disappointing. No such disappointments with this Braun. It’s sturdily built with a good feel in the hand. Most importantly with an electric shaver, it gives a close shave and has good battery life between charges: The battery charges quickly. I found it takes around 1 hour to fully charge and, shaving most days, I’ve found that a full charge will last for 2 weeks. The shaver has a powerful motor and so copes well with stubble, leaving a smooth feel without any pulls on the face. The shaver has a floating head, which means it moves so that the foil remains at right angles to your face as you move the shaver. The head can also be locked, and I preferred locking the head as I found it gave a closer shave without missing bits. I use an electric shaver most days, but revert to wait shaves if I have a few days growth. The Braun can cope with 2 or 3 days growth without any problem but, as is the case with most electric shavers, there were one or two long hairs that it missed. However, going over these with the long hair trimmer dealt with these. The trimmer seems narrower than others I’ve used in the past, but works well.I was intrigued by the option to wet shave with an electric razor. I always thought as these as alternatives. The pamphlet said using shaving foam with the shaver would smooth the glide over the skin, so I decided to give it a try. And, it did- the glide was slightly better and I felt the resulting shaver was slightly closer. However, it wasn’t as close as a wet shave and wouldn’t be enough to make me use this in preference to a wet shave.Overall, I’m very happy with this shaver and would definitely recommend it to others. Packaging is minimal and easy to get into..shaver and accessories are packed bodily and are easy to open ...Instruction manual is small but compact with 24 languages covered..user instructions are simple.and easy to follow..Once out of the packaging the shaver needs to be charged...when plugged in a charging light will indicate it's on charge and once charged 3 lights will light up for a few seconds before switching off...thennyou good to go...The head has as a 8 direction movement..so it's easy to follow the contours of your face ...the shave is close and comfortable and did not leave me with a shaving rash...as the foil is sensitive to skin and as I have sensitive skin anyway this was anadded bonus...with a built in trimmer on the back of the razor...which.means no fiddling around trying to.connect one...its a case of press a small.button and push trimmer up...I don't have a beard or moustache bit found this trimmer ideal for sideburns trimming...I have used this razor both for dry and wet shave and find it very capable of doing both...as got cleaning it's just a case of placing it under a running tap..as the razor is 100% water proof with a rubberized grip so not slipping out your hand...another handy operation is that the razor hard can be locked off when transporting it around...so no worries of damaging the could when unpacking...when I'm operation the razor is quite quiet..which I really like...this is for.me the best electric razor I have used...itz praticable light ,stylish, easy to use and very easy to clean...Will be using this razor more than a wet shave and I have always preferred wet shave ,until now that is. I have been using the Braun Series 5 5140 shaver for just over a week now and can honestly say it is the closest electric shaver to a manual shave I have ever found! It has a great lock in feature that allows you to lock the head in certain positions which gives you precision when shaving your more difficult areas. After every shave I check my face and can honestly say I haven't had to re-shave any missed areas. Which is a definite bonus when you are in a rush! There is also a side trimmer which you can lock into place in the handle, this is great for your sideburns and if you wanted to trimming (I don't personally do this but you could). It is also great you can use the shaver in the shower. At first I was a little nervous at using it in the shower as I am clumsy at the best of times but to add water to the mix is normally a recipe for disaster but the grip on the shaver is excellent so you shave with confidence even in the shower. And the quality of the shave is just as good in the shower as it is out.The shaver is easy to clean, you just remove the head plate and rinse, that's it!It is not only the quality of the shave that is good about the Series 5 5140, it also looks good and has a battery indicator on the handle so you know when you are running low and need to charge. The charge on the shaver is better than average and I have only just had to put the shaver on charge. Although, it doesn't take forever to re-charge. This is a definite plus if you travel as it has a good battery life and doesn't take long to charge.I would definitely recommend this shaver! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

First of all, I use a mix of wet and dry shaving methods, depending on my mood and/or available time. I already own a Braun Series 9 electric shaver but never dared use it in the shower. However, when i received this Braun Series 5 Wet & Dry electric shaver I put caution to the wind and gave it a go. Firstly, it feels strong and sturdy, it is a well engineered piece of shaving kit. Looks wise, well it looks like an electric shaver, but you know it will do a good job. The buttons seem responsive and the trimmer slide on the back is sturdy, as you would expect from Braun. When it arrived it had no charge but within 5 minutes of charging I was able to commence my first wet shave in a shower with an electric shaver.I went the whole hog and used some shaving gel as well. What I found definitely impressed me. With a couple of passes over each area my three day stubble had gone! There was no tugging and the whole shave was a joy. Don't get me wrong, nothing will get quite a close as a fresh razor but this was pretty close, plus i didn't cut myself, something that usually happens when the morning caffeine hasn't kicked in.Upon getting out of the shower i did notice a couple of small areas I had missed under my chin (operator error) but this was soon rectified. Would I use this again? Yes, definitely! However, I personally still like the idea of using a razor but i'll keep that for special occasions. What this Braun Series 5 electric razor has done is to give me a reason to spend longer in the shower, much to the chagrin of my long suffering wife! I have to get this in the open before I begin...I've never been a big fan of electric shavers. I personally don't feel like they're any faster or more convenient than a conventional razor. I have used a few different electric shavers of varying males and this is definitely the best I have used. It's quick. Quick to charge and quick to use. I sometimes find electric shavers take a while to get to all the little hairs around, especially round the jaw line but this picked up everything really well. I like the quick charge function and it really does work after 5 minutes which was quite a surprise, and good for people like me who run it flat and the forget to charge it before the next use (one reason why I prefer a conventional razor!)In terms of shaving performance I think it did well.I don't think it gives as close a shave as a conventional razor but it comes pretty close. It definitely outperforms others I've used in this area. Another good feature is that it's waterproof and can be used with shaving foam, which helps if you are like me and have sensitive skin which doesn't enjoy having a metal shaving head rubbed up against it as you're trying to get all little bits of stubble! It's also really easy to clean, as you can detach the cutting blades and wash them under the tap. The only downside is that it's a bit noisy to use but I can't fault it for performance. Overall it's definitely something I would happily go out and buy! Despite all the issues I have with electric shavers I think this might actually be the one to convert me (almost!) [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

I was really looking forward to trying the Braun Series 5 5140s as I currently use an older Braun shaver (7000 series) which I have always been pleased with. In fact having just changed the foil and cutter on the old one I knew it would be a fair test!First impressions of it were good as the 5140s fits nicely in the hand. Just in comparison with my old one, having the long hair trimmer on the 'back' (opposite side to the button) confused me, but I soon got used to it.Most importantly shaving performance has been impressive. It certainly seems more 'powerful' than my old one, not sounding like it's struggling with some thicker growth, and the end result has been a lovely smooth face, but with no soreness or anything (not that the old one had that problem either). Just running it under warm water to clean it has been a nice change, though it's in the cleaning that I have my caveats. There's probably no way around it, but once the intricacies of the foil/cutter cassette are wet, it takes a long while to dry out, even left off. I can, and do, shave with it wet, it's just not what I'm used to. And compared to my old one, having the foil and cutters as a single cassette unit makes me wonder if shavings will build up in the cassette - I'm used to being able to remove the foil to thoroughly clean the cutters. But I've been using it every day and now certainly wouldn't want to go back to my old shaver from the feel and shaving performance point of view, and I'd definitely recommend it at this point! This razor is probably the best I have ever used. It is simplicity to use, has an excellent feel in my hand and hugs my facial skin to give a far better shave than any other electric razor I have owned. From the moment I unpacked it I was impressed and couldn't wait to charge the battery. The razor felt nicely snug and chunky in my hand and I knew that I was going to have a good shave. The swivel head remains close to my skin in all directions ensuring that I have a close shave every time I use it. The feel of it is very precise and I don't get that type of irritation that I used to get with other foil razors. The way it holds to my face contours as the razor head pivots is such a pleasure.Hard to shave and reach hairs are now a thing of the past. There is a useful precision trimmer that works so well on the edge of the hairline around my ears and side burns. Though I have only used it at home I know that it will fit neatly into my wash bag on my travels. The battery life is very long and to date, after a fortnight of daily use it is still working with the same intensity that it did on the first day after charging. A very handy blue light shows how much charge is left. Pretty useful as it stops you guessing and getting caught out mid shave when others might cut out. Overall I heartily recommend this foil razor. I can honestly say that it is now a real pleasure to have a shave, often twice a day instead of it being a chore and the resultant finish is so smooth and close. Truly fabulous.
