I have used a Braun 8585 Activator shaver, with a clean and charge station, for at least 12 years (cannot recall now exactly when I purchased it ...) so I was looking to replace it with something similar. The Braun Series 9 shavers seemed just too posh and expensive for my needs so, based on features and cost, I settled for the Braun 7898 (Series 7) shaver, which also has a clean and charge station. It may seem odd, but the 8585, despite it's model number, is an older shaver model than the 7898. Fortunately, all the Braun shavers that have a clean and charge station use the same cleaning/lubricating refill cartridge,so the 4 cartridges I have remaining from my 8585 won't go to waste (the 7898 comes complete with a new cleaning/lubricating refill cartridge anyway!).The 7898 shaver is a comfortable size and weight in the hand, being slightly slimmer than my older 8585. It also has 5 varying levels of shaving "power", a feature which may prove useful, depending on how much beard growth you need to remove. It is Braun that uses the term "power", which varies from "sensitive to intensive" - when changing the "power" level it doesn't sound like the motor speed changes but it does get louder! I have seen reviews that indicate that replacement cutter/foil heads (Braun 70S) have been difficult to obtain in the past, but that does not appear to be an issue now, although they are fairly pricey.I have 4 major observations of the Braun 7898 shaver, about which my personal 'jury is still out':1. Mains Electricty versus Battery: This shaver, unlike my old model 8585, cannot be used when it is plugged in to an electricity socket, it can only be used when running on it's integral battery! That was a surprise to me, and a bit of a disappointment. My old shaver, because of it's age, had a battery that was past it's prime but it would still run for a handful of minutes on the battery and, of course, run endlessly when plugged in! Consequently, that ability undoubtedley extended it's life well beyond when most people might have replaced it, so I got 'value for money' out of it. In fact, replacement of the older model was necessitated by the power and trimmer extend/retract switch being worn and unreliable, not the tired integral battery! I am the type of person who believes that if a shaver is still working well, with a good motor, and replaceable foil/blade head, then why would I need to replace it just because the battery is a bit tired? After all, I have rarely faced the situation where I didn't have access to an electrical socket when I needed to shave. Unfortunately, when the battery on this new 7898 shaver begins to wane, I am not going to have the flexibility of the older model - a shame! I suspect that there are 2 major things which come in to play with this particular issue:a) Braun have created the 7898 model as a wet and dry shaver, which is "... waterproof up to 5 metres, so you can conveniently rinse them under running water or even shave under the shower"), so they don't want anyone attempting to use it wet whilst it is plugged in to an electrical socket (a safety thing, I do get it ...).b) When the integral battery finally refuses to provide any more useful power, another shaver purchase will be required, and Braun hopes it will be another one of theirs! Cynic? Me? So little these days can be repaired or refurbished, something which I think goes against the grain.2. Curly Power Cord versus Straight Power Cord: This shaver came with a straight power cord, which is longer than the curly one supplied with my old model 8585. I think I prefer the curly variety, probably because it automatically 'compacts' itself after use. Admittedley, as a person who travels internationally 4 to 5 times a month, I have experienced many hotel shaver sockets where the the power cord constantly slips out, due to wear within the socket, perhaps not helped by the tension of the curly power cord. Maybe that will be less of a problem with the straight, and noticeably longer, power cord supplied here? The Braun Service site (www.service.braun.com) implies that there are at least 4 power cord models that are compatible with the 7898, 2 of the straight variety and 2 of the curly variety, so at least there are options. We'll see ....3. Extendable Trimmer: The older 8585 model had a trimmer that extended up parallel to the body of the shaver, so that it was at the level of the cutter/foil head. This made it very easy to see and use when looking in to a mirror. The newer 7898 has a trimmer that folds outwards, tangential to the shaver body, which places it well below the level of the cutter/foil head. When trying to trim a moustache, for example, the trimmer is largely hidden by the cutter/foil head when looking in to the mirror, making it difficult to get a clear view of what the cutter is actually doing! The design might make for a compact shaver, but it is definitely not as convenient as the trimmer on the older 8585!4. Cutter/foil Head Cover: My older model 8585 shaver had a clear plastic cover which clipped on to the cutter/foil head and protected it from knocks whilst inside it's hard plastic (polypropylene?) case. The case supplied with this 7898 is a semi-rigid material, which will probably protect the shaver body okay, but there is no plastic cover to clip over the cutter/foil head, and that is something that does concern me, given the relative fragility of the shaver foil when bumped or knocked (personal experience ...). Unfortunately, the plastic cover on my old 8585 shaver head does not quite fit the broader shaver head of the 7898, otherwise I would use it. Replacement cutter/foil heads (Braun 70S) are not cheap but again, we'll see how it survives with my regular travelling. To help you decide if this is the shaver for you, you can find more technical details about it on the Braun UK website (uk.braun.com/en-gb), which also has downloadable manuals for the Braun 7898 and other models. Search there for the "Series 7 silver with Clean&Charge Station and travel case" and you should have no trouble finding it. However, there is no contest required when it comes to pricing - the price here is much better value than direct from Braun UK!Early days with the new shaver, but I'll probably settle in with it!EDIT: Having purchased this razor at the end of July 2017, it is now November 2017 so I have a quick update. It seems to work just fine, but I am mildy irritated by the workings of the 'Hygiene' LCD display, which sits next to the 'Battery' LCD display, on the bottom of the razor. The owners manual states:"All 6 hygiene segments will appear after the shaver has been cleaned in the Clean&Renew station. When the shaver is being used, the hygiene segments will gradually disappear. Once the shaver is returned to the station, the system will automatically select the appropriate cleaning program and restore the segments to maximum hygiene. Given that rinsing the shaver under tap water is not as hygienic as the cleaning station, the hygiene segments will only restore themselves when the shaver has been cleaned in the Clean&Renew station."This 'Hygiene' display appears to be little more than a palin digital counter, which is probably only affected by how many times the on/off switch is used and/or the length of time the razor is run, not it's actual cleanliness. Two average shaves and the hygiene counter falls to absolute minimum! I am sure that the razor really has no idea how clean it is because I experimented by thoroughly cleaning the razor head/blades, brushing them out, and then rinsing them in the same fluid as used in the cleaning cartridge. When the razor was then placed in the Clean&Renew station it registered the razor as needing a complete clean - what nonsense! As long as you accept that only the Clean&Renew station can 'reset' the 'Hygiene' counter on the razor, and that the counter is little more than that - a digital counter - and not a real cleanliness sensor, then you don't have to be too concerned if the counter itself reaches minimum. Once a week in the Clean&Renew station will probably be more than enough to keep it fresh and lubricated. You can certainly lengthen the life of the cleaning fluid by removing the blade cartridge and cleaning it and the razor head well with the supplied brush and then placing it in the Clean&Renew station. The razor, otherwise, does it's job quite well.

At the time of writing the chrome-finish Braun Series 9 9296cc, which also comes with a leather-bound carry-case, is over £100 more expensive than the 9290cc silver version and although it’s very nice it really isn’t worth the extra spend, so consider sticking with the silver! Either of them deliver a top-of-the-range feeling shaver which delivers an excellent comfortable shave, although to be honest it’s no better than the shave current Series 7 models can deliver too.The packaging the 9296cc arrives in is pretty basic, mine was actually rattling around inside the cardboard box thanks to some rough handling on the way, but suffered no damage at all.Alongside the shaver you get the cleaning station with your first cleaning-fluid refill, a mains lead, a small cleaning brush and a very nicely made leather carry-case. The shaver is hefty and solid feeling and very precisely put together finished but the chrome finish is prone to showing fingerprints, although they wipe off equally easily. There’s only a single button control which starts/stops the shaver and if you hold it for longer activates a lock which stops the shaver being switched on by accident in your bag. The other sliding button acts as a lock for the cutter head and you can lock it into any one of 5 different angles - it’s useful if you need to do any clever pruning around your soul-patch or goatee but mostly you’ll leave it free moving for the best results. On the back there’s a slide-out sideburn trimmer which is small, just an inch wide, but works well enough. With previous models I often had to use the trimmer to catch longer stray hairs on my neck but with this (and other recent) Braun model you never need to do that, the head catches everything. The chrome effect is mostly limited to the front of the shaver and the back is mostly coated with a textured non-slip rubber finish to give the best grip while you’re working. Finally there’s an illuminated display on the front which lets you see the current charge and warns you when the shaver is due for a more thorough clean, if you don’t use the cleaning station daily. The Clean & Charge station seems more lightweight than previous models were but it has an appealing minimal styling and subtle hidden white LED’s which illuminate to show the current charge and cleaning state. The shaver feels a bit precarious in the cleaning station, it’s not going to fall out but it just leans back against the electrical contacts and it’s not really held in the correct position very firmly - or at all really. It’s quick though and does a daily quick-clean in about 10 minutes, longer and more thorough cleaning happens automatically when needed because the shaver tracks how often it’s been used since the last full clean cycle. After using the alcohol-based cleaning fluid the shaver gets dried by a fan built into the cleaner - note the Series 7 cleaning stations (that I’ve tried) don’t have this drying function - but the drying part of the cycle seems to take longer than the cleaning part does. The shave it gives is fantastic, but I must admit I’ve always found I get the best results with Braun shavers and so maybe my face it just most accustomed to them - I’ve tried rotary shavers, even very expensive ones, but can’t get along with them at all and they leave me with bad razor burn and ingrown hairs. There’s a significant buzz from this shaver as it works, I think it’s intended to give a massage effect and ease the shaver and the foils over your face and keep the blades cutting at top speed. The speed of cut matters because that’s what makes electric shavers 'better' (in my opinion) than blade shaving - with blade shaving you pull the hair with the blade before you cut it resulting in an angled cut and therefore a sharper and more bristly result, it also increases the likelihood of ingrown hairs. An electric shaver cuts so quickly the hair doesn’t have time to move and so you get a more blunt cut end and a less bristly result. This is also why some blade razors come with a built-in buzzing massage effect - they’re trying to emulate the fast cutting action of a good foil shaver. Of course every face is different but once you’re accustomed to electric shaving, especially a good foil shaver like this one, you can get the most effective and comfortable shave possible.Overall this does look and feel like a high-end very well made shaver and it does deliver an excellent shave, but the chrome effect and leather case are an indulgence and make no difference to the results. I have recently also tried a Series 7 Braun and found it gave fantastic results too and had an even more pronounced massage effect, which seemed to make it even more effective with each sweep - so I think I could probably get a slightly quicker shave with a Series 7 than this Series 9. The Series 7 wasn’t as nicely designed or as well made as this Series 9, so if you appreciate the best then it’s still a great buy.

I have used electric shavers for over 20 years and many brands, including a large number of Braun models, Remingtons, Philishaves and Panasonic models. Until recently I had given up on Braun – my recent experiences with mid to low price Brauns were poor – the batteries inside died quickly, the foils wore out quickly, and the shave was very mediocre. I also had experience of one cleaning station leaking. When amazon sent me this unit to review I was not expecting great things. It’s a relatively high price point model. I was pleased to see that it immediately grabs you with a sense of it being well made (it’s made in Germany, unlike the cheaper Brauns). It has a heft to it without it being uncomfortably heavy and a modern design pleasing to the eye. However I have to say the chrome version supplied is very shiny and not to everyone's taste - it looks smarter in the product images than in real life - my preference would not be for this chrome version as the shiny chrome does take the edge of it looking an expensive product. I like the inclusion of charge indicators as well as cleaning indicators. The included clean and charge station seems better than previous ones I have tried, and this method of cleaning certainly does a better job of it than just running the shaver under the tap. The station uses cartridges you have to buy (comes with a free one) and charges the shaver as well. This design of clean and charge station now includes a fan that runs for 40 mins after cleaning, prior to charging starting - this is good in that it dries the shaver head, but the fan is not silent, and in an en-suite bathroom hearing this for 40 mins could be annoying. One thing that concerns me is the cost of foils, which seems to have shot up over the last few years to £30 and over. I hope the foil lasts !I have just a 24 hour stubble so I can not comment on this shaver for those who grow a longer stubble or who have a beard. I do have sensitive skin so I was interested to note the different power/strength settings on the unit. I tried the unit on full power and this was fine for my sensitive skin. Quite simply, this was the closest electric shave I have ever had – it did a really great job – almost as good as a wet blade. If you are expecting exactly as good as a blade you won’t ever get that from an electric shaver, whatever the marketing hype may claim. This comes the closest out of all the shavers I have tried. I have been sent both a series 7 and a series 9 Braun to review. With both I find you do still sometimes have to go over some neck stubble more than once – I have never found a shaver that did not require that. But doing so does not rasp and tug at the skin, leaving it red and sore. The Series 9 has a noticeably bigger head and more complex foils and cutters.I would say the series 9 shaves a tad more closer than the series 7 but there isn’t much in it and the supposedly even better tech in the series 9 in my view doesn’t warrant the extra £100 or so. Yes the series 9 feels even more luxurious in the hand, as if it is a carefully crafted piece of German tech (which it is). However the series 7 also feels very well made. I guess the series 9 is the ultimate if money is no object, but the series 7 gives a great shave. One thing I find weird – the latest series 7 charge and clean station has more functionality than the one supplied here with this series 9 – I find that odd. And there appears to be no backwards compatibility between the two – you can’t use the series 7 station with a series 9 shaver.Battery life seems very good so far – better than rivals from Panasonic and the cheaper Braun models. Overall I’m really impressed – in the world of electric shavers it appears that you get what you pay for and that it is indeed worth spending more to get a good shave. Braun – you’ve brought me back to the fold with this model ! Having said that, think carefully about the series 7 instead as it offers almost as good a shave for a better price.

Braun Series 8 8391cc Next Generation, Electric ShaverThis is supplied in quite a large box which was a bit of a challenge trying to work out how to open it. The box shows that this is made in Germany which for me is a good sign. The fact this is made in Germany explains why German language is the first language displayed in the user manual.Within the box are: Electric shaver, carry case, charging stand, cleaning cartridge, smart charging cable, small brush, user manual plus info slip. The Electric shaver is quite large, it sits very comfortably in the hand due to it's slender shaped design. The rear of the shaver has a dimpled rubberoid pad attached which makes gripping this very easy. There is also a slide up trimmer which can be moved easily using the thumb whilst holding the Shaver. The front of the shaver has a circular power button, which again is easy to access using the thumb. Below the power button is an LED display which is much brighter than most LED displays I've seen, this will show the state of charge within the shaver by way of five power bars. Above the power button is a depressed slide button, this is used to lock or unlock the shaver head into one of eight different positions. You are also supplied with a smart power cable which can be used to charge the shaver from a 2-pin wall socket. There is also a Clean and Charge station which is quite a big unit, this has a drop down base where you slot in a cleaning cartridge that is full of cleaning fluid. The smart charging cable also plugs into this Clean and Charge station, this enables the shaver to be fully charged whilst the shaver heads are being thoroughly cleaned & lubricated. The shave is inserted upside down into the top of the Clean and Charge station, once inserted, charging will automatically commence. To clean the shaver you need to press the cleaning button on top of the station. This has an LED display built in which will display the current state of charge along with cleaning information. There is also a very nice rigid zip-up leather case provided, this has a good solid metal zipper. The shaver sits neatly inside. This is a wet or dry shaver so you can easily clean it under the tap. You can also use this to shave with foam or gel if you wish.In use:Charging time takes approximately 1 hour, this should give 60 minutes of use. The shaver is very comfortable to hold, it is quite loud when compared to my other shaver which is a quite elderly floating head shaver. To be honest, when I first used this shaver I was a little disappointed as it didn't provide the close shave that I'm used to. After consulting the user manual I realised that I needed to ensure the shaving head was sitting at 90 degrees, after I adjusted the angle the shave was much closer. The shaving head can be locked in 8 different positions by way of the slide lock button, once adjusted to my liking the shave was much closer.I have quite sensitive skin, many shavers leave me with neck rash, normally I cannot shave with this kind of shaver because of this. I'm pleased to say that I have suffered no form of neck rash at all using this shaver, it does seem to give a good shave whilst also being kind to the skin. Well, I am currently clean shaven for sure having put both the series 7 and 9 through their paces. Much of my view of the 9 echoes the 7 except that if this was an Audi the 9 would be the Black edition, dressed to impress with chrome front and top (clean once a week after polishing the car) with a rubberised back to avoid it slipping out of your hand.Very slightly sized up compared with the series 7 as if to encourage any decent self-respecting chap that that this is more man sized. Generally more of a quality feel (not that the 7 is tacky, this one simply has the low profile tires and LED headlights).A few differences that we will all nod to. The series 9 achieves 40,000 cross cuts per minute versus 30,000.That must mean a faster shave (although it was difficult to compare in controlled conditions). But say it achieves a saving of even 20% (there must be a law of diminishing returns in terms of cross cuts) and the average daily shave takes 4 minutes. That could save 48 seconds a day or almost five hours a year. Say, a day off every 18 months. It would be rude to ask your hourly rate but the series 9 could pay for itself in saved time in a year or two.It also has Titanium, which no self-respecting anything should be without these days. I think that means it will be durable. This is also syncro-sonic as opposed to merely intelligent sonic (no, nor do I) but more importantly it has two extra things that do things between the foils rather than one. A hyper lift and cut trimmer and a direct and cut trimmer.Leaving aside my cynicism with ‘Ad people’ words (a bit like shampoos advertising nano technology and Phyto-dolphin (name changed) technology), you will buy or be bought this razor because you are worth it. This is a status symbol in the bathroom. You will be inviting your mates around on some pretext and then saying ‘fancy coming in the bathroom with me?’ in the hope that as you show them your grouting they will notice that you have a series 9 by the sink. It is only a pity that you can’t park this minx in the driveway. I may even see if I can get a sticker ‘my other vehicle is a Braun series 9’.The 9 is the 7 plus some and it does feel as if it gives a better shave but then more expensive cars feel as if they are doing more and when you think about it they are still only taking you from A to B. You may get a closer shave but it is not like when I wore Lynx and had to take a run for it with people wanting a piece of me. No one will know that this is not just a shaved person, this is a Braun series 9 shaved person. It is the sense of treating yourself (or X if you are buying this as a gift) that is the main thing. Plus those potential 48 seconds a day. However, I can see myself spending more than that length of time polishing and gazing at the chrome. If the 7 is the Waitrose of shavers, this is the M & S Food Hall (no one, of course, could compete with Amazon Pantry!). If the 7 is an Audi A6, this is the Black Edition. And so on. You use this shaver because you just know that David Gandy can’t afford one. I mean, look at those adverts. Whatever he is using, he isn’t getting a close shave.

Firstly, I was looking to be convinced with moving to an electric shaver. I've tried them in the past and never found the closeness of shave or comfort a match for manual blades. I've tried a few Philips electrics and an old Remington but hated them, even though they boasted "wet" shave options. This Series 9 is a revelation though, although it will never completely replace my trusty Gillette Pro Fusion blades for closeness and smoothness there are a number of reasons why I'll keep it charged and in use.Firstly, the grip, feels natural and secure. The weighting of the handset is also extremely well balanced, meaning your not constantly worried about dropping your new expensive purchase on to the tiled bathroom floor. The build quality is extremely high with handle material for the palm feeling good for gripping and well-formed. The casing also has a good shiny chromed appeal and cleans easily.First use and setup for the unit is easy, with the standard two-pin shaver plug charging the handset individually, or the handset "via" the cleaning base unit. The base unit is supposedly not meant to be transported or moved once the cleaning liquid is installed as it will spill, this makes taking the unit on long holidays or moving it two different rooms precarious. You might be inclined to wonder why the manufacturers would put such high quality design into the handset, but make the replacement of the cleaning liquid seem so ill thought out.The cleaning unit does it's job well, giving a fast charge in line with the manual's suggested time and a good clean. The liquid is also not offensively odoured. The downside to the base unit is there seems to be a background hum when in use that is louder than I'd expect; this could be particularly annoying if you're using the station in an en suite or upstairs bathroom near bedrooms. In use the shave is 1-2mm if using quickly, particularly under the chin, the build in trimmer on the rear of the set deals with longer neater shaves to almost approach manual wet shave closeness. It glides smoothly, and importantly does not irritate or leave redness. There is a wet and dry setting which seems to work fine and without issue and the indicator on the handset clear points out the charge level and need to clean via clear illuminated display markers. Charge lasts a long time meaning there is no worry of half shaves if taking the unit out.Overall, I highly recommend this unit and it would be perfect if it wasn't for a few design considerations to make the end users' life more pleasant and simple.PROS:High build qualityEasy to handle and feel "natural" in the palmGood battery life and displayAesthetically pleasingCONS:Expensive unit and you'll need replacement cleaning fluidsFluid use can be messy if moving.Base can be noisy (unless it was just our unit).

Straight out of the box this razor only took 1 hour 10 to fully charge, great start. But then it didn't go as great as I hoped for the price. It did a great job the first time but I had already just trimmed down to nothing the night before so wasn't much work for it to do. Used it on the dry setting and it took a little over 5 minutes to rid my face of most pesky hairs. however it struggled around the sides of the neck, and lost points on the precision side of things, when shaving around the sideburns couldn't get too close with the main foil razor as I was just making a mess of the neat line and the trimmer on the back does a poor job at best only trimming not shaving. Great side note though, with the clean and charge docking station adding lubricant to the clean there was next to no irritation at all. This is a major plus for me. The second time around I left it 3 days to give it a sizable task to perform and tried it on the wet setting, using my usual shave foam i set to. This is where I felt a little let down. The razor worked wonders again around the front part of my face from nose to chin but struggled on the cheeks, neck and again around the side burn area. after clearing the foam away found that I needed to then do a dry shave with it to get all the missed areas. this overall process took me nearly 25 minutes to get rid of all the stragglers and neaten up my side burn area. I also had a small amount of bleeding from the neck where it struggled, not sure where from as it didn't cut me maybe tugged a stray hair out instead of cutting it. Third time i decided to try after just a couple of days on a dry setting. this is where it really belongs I feel. just struggling a little around the neck but seeming to get a good enough job done after just 5 minutes. almost as smooth as a razor all over (however I did have to use a normal manual razor at this point to get a neat line - clean shaven on my side burns) still no irritation. Over all I would say that this is quite handy for a quick morning top up shave, works quite well after a couple of days growth but not much more, better at dry than wet and is great for leaving no irritation. Very chunky and looks like quality, very easy to clean afterwards even without the clean and charge station. pros- clean and charge station gives great lubrication, charges in a little over an hour from dead battery close shave eay to clean even withouth the clean and charge station cons - struggles around the neck area in both wet and dry not great at clean shave precision (neat line on side burn) anything over 2-3 days growth possibly need to trim firstAll this product is missing is precision clean shaving.Disclaimer - I am trying this product for free with many thanks to Braun for the opportunity.

This shaver looks really smart in its shiny chrome livery. It also comes with a premium leather case, ideal for the travelling executive.I have now owned the Braun Series 3, Series 7 and Series 9 shavers, which puts me in a good position to appreciate the benefits of the Series 9 shaver. I started with the Series 3 but was not impressed as it did not compare with my usual wet shave. I then upgraded to the Series 7. I found that this was a useful option for a quick shave at 6 am before going to work but I still used my Gillette Fusion Proglide at weekends for the best quality shave.I am pleased to say that the superlative quality shave with the Series 9 has now made my Series 7 and Gillette Fusion Proglide entirely redundant. The difference between the two Braun shavers is largely down to the addition of a second trimmer in the middle of the shaver head that catches hairs that were missed by the Series 7.Although the Series 9 is the most sophisticated shaver in the Braun range, it is also simpler to use than the Series 7. The Series 7 has an adjustable maximum power output, via two buttons either side of the on-off switch, in case some need to use lower power to reduce irritation. This is unnecessary on the Series 9, which has the smoothest shave of all the Braun shavers. It has “responsive intelligence”, adapting its power output when used for a second shave in the evening to get rid of a 5 o clock shadow or to tackle a 5-day growth. The latter only took 8 minutes and was a really comfortable experience with no irritation. The power display on the shaver is also really simple and effective. When the shaver is switched on or put onto charge, it displays 5 horizontal blue lines to indicate the level of charge. If there is insufficient charge for a shave, it displays a flashing red battery symbol. This is far clearer than the current Series 7 which has a confusing set of flashing and continuous green lights on the base, making it hard to tell how much charge is left in the shaver.I used the Charge and Cleaning station, which has left the inside of my shaver spotless. The Series 9 station has a fan to actively dry the shaver, so it is ready for use within a couple of hours. By contrast, the Series 7 shaver foil was often still wet at 6 pm when I returned home from work, 12 hours after being cleaned, as its cleaning station uses a passive drying system.Having owned several of the other shavers in the Braun range, I am delighted with the Series 9 and can highly recommend it.

This is an excellent looking shaver. I would have preferred the base to be white to be easier to clean and more bathroom colour friendly. The shaver itself looks superb. It doesnt look flash, it's just an exceptionally smart looking shaver with an outstanding build quality which you'd expect for this premium price. The shaver gives an excellent shave. Not as close as wet shaving but I've yet to find a shaver that does. As far as electric shavers go it's a great shave. It's also waterproof so you can rinse it under the tap or use it while showering. We did have one of these Braun clean and renew systems several years ago and this is an improvement. The base while large isn't as wide and squat as it's ancient predecessors. The cleaning cartidges are an ongoing expense but not outrageously expensive. There is a huge eww factor on changing the used cartrides though. They do end up murky and horrible after a months use.It is impractical to take the shaver away from home because of the sloshy, large, fluid filled base unit but you can rinse the shaver under water as you can do with conventional shavers. This shaver has no problem with thick, coarse hair and doesn't tug or leave any shaving rash. The base station has loud cleaning stages which are as noisy as a washing machine spin cycle but they only lasts a short while. The rest of the cleaning cycle is quiet. It could wake up the rest of the house in the mornings though. Each cartridge lasts for about 30 cleaning cycles. It does look a bit like a James Bond gadget shaver. For the current price points the only benefit of getting the more expensive 9 series is a countdown display of minutes shaving remaining so this seems the better buy unless you travel a lot and can't recharge it as often. If you are not going to take the base away (and I would advise you don't with an open cleaning solution as it leaks in transit) you can still recharge it from the mains but it obviously takes more effort than just plonking it upside down in the cleaning solution unit. Please be careful when ordering this as the two options aren't colour differences. On this page you can order a wet and dry version and a dry version. I have received and reviewed the wet and dry shaver which is also cheaper at present. I wouldn't recommend buying the dry only version as the only option seems to be to always use the solution which is a bit smelly and is better rinsed off a bit before use.

This review is for the 9296cc model - other models are sold on this page and this review will show up against them.I've been using the series 9 9095cc which at the time of writing is nearly £140 cheaper. The cheaper 9095cc gave a fantastic shave and so I thought that for the extra money the shave should be even better, but I can't tell the difference. That isn't a negative as the shave on this is still pretty fantastic and almost on par with a wet shave. One thing I can do with this is to use a foam or gel when shaving (9095cc was waterproof, but not for use with foams and gels) which marginally makes the shave a little more smooth and a little less irritating. The handle is comfortable to hold and easy to manouvre around the face. The head can be locked into one place or left to move and this can be done whilst the shaver is in use by a simple slide switch, so you can put it on and off as it suits you. The rear trimmer pops up with another slide switch at the rear. It is functional, bot not something I need or use. Battery life is superb and I easily get a week or more of daily use. When you get to the last 9 mins the display changes from bars to numerical minutes remaining. The charging and cleaning station is rather bulky, but it isn't out of place on my bedside cabinet and I just have to drop the shaver in to charge it and set it to clean when necessary. When cleaning the unit becomes a little noisy, but it is only for a few minutes. The unit does give off a faint cleaning fluid smell when left standing, but it is not overpowering or unpleasant. Replacement cartridges are around £12 for 3. How long they last depends on how often you clean it.The case for this is marked up as a leather travel case, it is just enough to hold the razor. A nice touch, but the case that came with the 9095cc was pretty good and was the same size and shape. This is an amazing razor, but the £340 price tag, it is a bit of a blow to the wallet. This may well come down in price, but if it doesn't, take a look at the 9290cc (replacement for the 9095cc), it has the same specifications as the 9296cc, but it doesn't come with a "premium" case, yet it is over £120 cheaper.

The RRP for this shaver is £300, so I really wanted to know what a shaver three times the price I paid for my last shaver would give me.Firstly, it looks impressive - although I wouldn't buy a shaver based on that. An LCD display in the base shows the battery level and when it believes it should be cleaned in the Clean and Change Station that it comes with.It feels very comfortable in my hand and when held for use my thumb lies on the pop-up trimmer button, which is good. The trimmer pops up at 90 degrees from the shaver and snaps into position and back again. It claims that the shaver changes speed depending upon how much work the shaver decides it needs to do.There are also two small silver buttons to manually change the speed. These buttons are located beneath the on/off button and so aren't ideally positioned for use while shaving. It does shave very well when used for dry shaving. Using it for wet shaving was very impressive - very close and comfortable. Run it under the tap to rinse the foam off it as you go. Braun shavers are getting steadily better for wet-shaving and this is the best I've tried yet - for any electric shaver. The Clean and Charge station uses the same cartridges that Braun have used for years now. The difference now is that it apparently decides how much cleaning is actually required and so should make the cartridges last longer. The suggested cleaning cycles appear to come around quite quickly, so I haven't seen it select anything other than the longest cleaning time yet.The cleaning station is very similar to previous models and can still spill the contents of the cartridge if you tip it slightly - something that has always annoyed me about this device. The power lead appears to have changed slightly from earlier models, so my impressive collection of spare charging leads may have to go. The shaver can be charged without the charging station, as it has its own power connector - so you don't have to take the cleaning station with you when travelling.I'm not sure I would pay the £300 RRP for this but at the current Amazon price (£177) I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

I had a Braun series 3 for many years, replaced the foil and cutters more than once, I even looked into changing the battery as it was becoming very tired, sadly the wet shaving was creeping back in which hates me. I had been looking at both the series 9 and the 7 quite often when my girlfriend and I were out and about, the series 9 for some reason the shaving head just looked too wide for me it wasn't a cost constraint, so after a bit of reading here and watching a few online videos I'd decided the series 7 was for me. Three weeks ago I found the postman/courier on my doorstep with a box for me, my girlfriend had bought it for me, nice surprise :) As others have mentioned it came with one clean and renew cartridge inside, that week I found a box of 6 for £23, also when not in use I put the lid back on the cartridge and I have a can of air spray normally for cleaning a pc/laptop, it's larger than what Braun offer and does the same job clearing out the foil/cutters, give it a good blast and hardly anything collects in the bottom of the clean and renew cartridge. I also own a little M90 battery Braun shaver, just in case I am not awake enough I may miss a tiny amount of stubble and have already put the shaver in the cleaning cycle this handy little shaver can pick off any stragglers. I did try a rotary Phillips once, great on the face but destroyed my neck, the Braun is set on the slowest speed I have no irritation problems. My elder Brother saw it for the first time today plus the results so I imagine he will be purchasing a series 7 too as he was very impressed, he has seen me apply lots of savlon to my neck after wet shaving to stop a break out. This is a great shaver, I highly recommend it especially for men with sensitive faces and an even more sensitive neck, it really has me enjoying shaving at the moment.

BraunWhen my New Braun Series 7 arrived, I couldn't wait to try it- with the added bonus that I'd been sent this for free fromBraun to try this Series 7 out!I'd used Braun shavers before, so knew the brand stood for quality workmanship and would hopefully provide great results as usual. Well, I wasn't disappointed. The product itself looks small and sleek, and the cleaning station included in the package is a new one on me.The cleaning system means the foil stays in tip top condition, even after a number of shaves, so it has never been easier to ensure that you're always shaving with the shaver in optimum condition to give you the best shave possible. There's even an indicator on the shaver to tell you when it's due for a clean,if you tend to forget these types of things! The cleaning station automatically charges your shaver too, so you never pick up your shaver in the morning to find your battery is flat!I like to keep my facial hair a little longer, leaving some stubble, and this shaver is great for that, as you can adjust the shaving length to the hair length that suits you. Selecting the "sensitive" mode worked best for me as I sometimes have irritated skin post shave. The fact that this can be used either wet or dry, helps to save time too!The finish it gave, whilst never going to compete with a wet shave in terms of closeness, was great. The fact that I leave some stubble means that a wet shave is out of the question, so having something like the Series 7 to use, really shows how quick, easy shaving can be and with really great results. The convenient travel case that comes with the shaver is a handy and smart addition too.At a fairly hefty price (£300), only time will tell how much value this shaver provides, but the build quality and initial results bode well for the future!

I've been fortunate enough to be able to test a number of shavers, and for a long time, I exclusively used traditional double-edge (DE) razors rather than electric. However, I now use DE only for tackling 3+ days' stubble growth, with my daily shave taken care of by electrics. I have been using a Series 7 Braun for a year now, and it is very good. However, if you're wondering whether the price difference between the 7 and 9 is worth it, I would say, for me, it certainly is. The 7 is a great shaver, but the 9 is greater still. In short, the shave is incredible close and irritation-free: no burn! The 9 certainly requires fewer passes than any other electric I have used, and shaves all those awkward hairs perfectly.Even with the 7, I would usually need to finish my shave with a pass of the DE razor under my chin and over my Adam's apple. The 9 glides over all these areas and leaves them perfectly smooth. The combination of a powerful motor, high powered battery and excellent shaving element get the job done without fuss. The 9's extra horsepower over the series 7 is noticeable from the first use.The 9 is a fantastic shaver. The leather travel case is real step up over the 7's woven fabric case and the charge and clean station looks neat, if slightly large. If I was to find fault in the 9, it is only in the very high (current) price of the replacement heads, which you are advised to change every 18 months. Currently, the 9 series cartridge is about £85. However, the same cartridges have been as low as £25, so keep an eye on them and buy when they're discounted rather than inflated. That's the closest I can get to a criticism.

On opening the b ox I was presented with a beautiful looking shaver. All shiny, black one side chrome the other, looked like a really pro piece of kit. The shaver was not charged so onto charge straight away. It comes with the wash station and one wash solution unit, so all ready for the off. There is no clip on foil protector which is a shame as the foils tend to be very delicate and it is nice to be able to put a cover on. The case is very nice too, again very pro looking black leatherette and silver zip, this shaver certainly is a hit in the looks department. The small vinyl accessories bag is a bit naff, cant see what I would use it for, so back of the drawer job. The head is larger than my older Braun units, but it seems to pivot really well. One thing I will have to watch out for is the fact that longer hairs can go right into the foil and get plucked,( shaver off), but then if you want rid of longer hairs then this is good and I am pleased that it can handle them and not just glide over without cutting. Who uses a shaver when it is off anyway!!I really like the look of this shaver, the chrome is amazing, hopefully it won't come off like the silver did on my old model.Of course the cut is superb, really close, almost as good if not very near a wet shave. So you get very close shaves without the cuts. This is now my number one go to shaver, I can at last ditch the older ones and use this for everything. The trimmer is more useful too as it is about an inch long and does not reach to the edges of the head, so it can be used for all those awkward little bits that larger trimmers over run.
