This UniversalRotak 550 from Bosch is a refresh on the old Rotak 37, and it brings with it updated styling which makes it a bit more subdued, taking on a less blue-ish shade of green, and losing the bright red on the adjustment lever and triggers. This new model has a nice look about it, quite sophisticated in some ways. If you like your garden equipment to exude a certain degree of ‘knowing reassurance’ and don’t like to be pushing around something garish, then this is a good place to start. The other areas of the design that have improved are the grass collection box. This has gone from a hard ABS plastic one-piece box (which was a bit of a menace to assemble in the first instance),to this ready-assembled part-plastic part-fabric collapsible version, which helps you more reliably tell how full it is.The handles have been improved as well. I already liked the ‘ergoflex’ handles from the old Bosch models, but these are now a bit further refined. You can set one of two different heights for the handles which feel a bit more accommodating of taller individuals now as I can get a more comfortable stance without subconsciously stooping. The height adjustment is now achieved with one hand by holding the central grip, and having your thumb depress the red button, then you simply pull the whole device up or push down as you choose. I prefer this to the old lever as that felt a bit awkward as you had to sort of push down on the lever whilst also trying to counteract that force to raise the mower.Cutting performance and noise levels are pretty similar to my old Rotak 40, so in spite of some claims that it has made improvements on the noise front. Maybe others will notice a greater difference in this regard. It’s not exactly a super-noisy mower by any stretch though. The power cord is 10 metres long. This is not going to be enough on its own to tackle most people’s gardens unless you only have a ‘postage stamp’ - in which case that’s fine. Chances are you’re probably going to have to use a suitable outside extension cord, and to be fair I’ve just come to accept that.Overall, at a price of c. £179.99 (at time of review) that is a bit of a jump over what you might be able to find the old Rotak 37 selling for right now, but there are some legitimate improvements to how it’s been designed and put together which I think might warrant some of that premium.

I’ve tried other brands before but have been using Bosch lawnmowers for a number of years now. I’ve found them to be reliable, robust and good to use which is always a bonus with a garden tool. This model is designed for small to medium-sized gardens and is easy to use, with comfortable handles and I like that it’s easy to change the height settings although I tend to leave it at the same height for most of the grass-cutting season anyway. It is fairly easy to manoeuvre, although it can get heavy with a full load of wet grass in the collection box. I like that the handles can be folded back over the machine when not in use so that it takes less storage space which is a feature that I never used to have but now think is invaluable. It leaves a strip effect in the grass, although that tends to last for only a matter of days (like with other mowers). The effect is only apparent where it’s possible to do long runs along the lawn, and not where there are smaller areas which must be criss-crossed for example. There are ‘combs’ at the edge of the lawnmower too, with the idea that any blades of grass are drawn in from the edges for trimming as the mower passes over them. It’s not perfect but I do find it works well enough that I don’t need to use my strimmer each time I cut the grass. The results are very good when using this lawnmower, with a neat finish to the lawn and not a lot of mess. The only thing that I would really change with this mower is the length of the power cord - I have to use an extension lead with it, and even then it’s still shorter than I would like, and actually a bit shorter than the older models. On the whole this is definitely a lawnmower than I can recommend, and based on my own previous experience I’m expecting it to last for a long time too.

I got this back in May or June yet thanks to a freakishly warm and dry summer I've only needed to use it a few times. I admit to being rubbish at putting things together - this was simple enough to build even with the complete lack of useful instruction, though I did need the help of a YouTube video at one point. It's a lot easier to manoever than my previous mower, even though it's heavier. It runs along the ground more smoothly and the multi grip handlebar helps in this area. There are plenty of height settings which is great for me as I have a tendency to let the grass grow to 'embarrass the neighbours' levels. Modifying the height is simple and mostly accurate though can be a little stiff sometimes.I've had no problem with the grass bin like other reviewers have commented - my only issue has been with the little plastic piece on top (I'm sure it has a name, but let's call it Bob). Bob pops open when the bin is full so you can see the grass inside and know when to empty. Unfortunately Bob popped off and disappeared - possibly when I was emptying into the bin -and I believe he's gone for good. I have had to fashion a stepbrother for Bob, let's call it Cob, made out of tape and random cardboard. Aside from this, it's a great mower.

Requiring minimal assembly ( the assembly instructions are however right at the BACK of the multi language instruction manual, why not at the front?), this Bosch has some clear improvements over previous models. Height adjustment is much easier and the grass box has an indicator to highlight when it is full. A little quieter than previous models, it dealt with varying of of grass with no difficulty.Simply fold the handle and remove the folding grass box to minimise storage space requirements. The grass box is perhaps the one area where I feel the design could have been a little better. Easy enough to remove, refitting securely is not quite as simple to accomplish securely every time.A minor quibble and nothing that takes away from the effectiveness of this mid range mower which is also easy to manoeuvre.Too early to comment on durability but one general advantage of Bosch products to date has been their long term support in terms of service and spare pa rats should your mower need attention outside the 3 year warranty.

I have previously used a Bosch 32R mower which was very good indeed as well as numerous Bosch DIY tools and all have a real quality feel about them. This mower follows in the same footsteps. It feels like it will last years which is good feeling if you do invest your hard earned cash into one of these. The box it is delivered in is surprisingly (yet pleasingly) small and is easy put together. Using the 550 I found myself surprised at how easy to push it was. Despite having a chunky appearance it is light let still delivers a really impressive cut. This mower is a delight to use. It leaves a nice stripe, collects cuttings thoroughly and leaves a lovely finish. It isn't too bad to store and feels solid yet light. If you have even a fairly large lawn I'd be seriously considering this. We have two (the larger to the rear of the house) and it gets the job done quickly and efficiently. Very impressive.

This was really easy to set up, and although it’s sturdily built, it’s not overly heavy, nor is it as noisy as my previous mowers.Cutting height is adjustable, with 6 different settings, and it cuts with ease, right to the edge.Love the soft grip handles and I have found it requires far less effort to physically manoeuvre around my lawn making the whole chore far less exhausting and back breaking than I’m used to. I don’t think cutting the grass is ever going to be something I particularly enjoy doing but I hate it far less since I got this mower !!!

This is a powerful and easy to manoeuvre lawnmower. The wheels move very easily and so it pushes along with very little effort. The height adjustment is easy, once you work out how to do it - the instructions were not easily to interpret for this. The low setting is really good for a short lawn. The pick up of the cuttings works really well leaving the lawn clean and tidy. The motor deals with long grass without flinching. The mower is quite long so is a bit tricky in confined sections of the lawn. Overall, very impressed with this.

The rear roller became detached at one end after only a few minutes use. The replacement has so far functioned well. Assembling the machine needed some help from a strong neighbour, especially connecting the power cable, and some things that fitted easily on the first machine were difficult on the replacement and vice versa. The grass box isn't easy to fix firmly and either comes off or is difficult to remove.

Bought this to replace an old 30” Flymo. I’m happy with the cut and the grass collection, and it’s light enough for my wife to use. The only down side is that the grass box is a bit fiddly to locate: unless you locate it carefully and click it on properly and ensure that the grooves locate at the bottom of the collector, it’ll fall off.

Used for mowing a fairly extensive back lawn. Very pleased with the results. Practically all of the cut grass was contained within thecollection bag, unlike my previous hover mower which blew cut grass from the sides.

Nice bit of kit.Easy to assemble and cuts the grass like it should . Plenty of power and a grass box that folds up and stows away. Also easy to operate and manoeuvre so my wife says.

4.9.2019

Grass 'box' doesn't fit too well with grass blowing out the sides during operation. Not really a problem though because the 'box' is really big and holds lots of cuttings.

23.7.2019

Used once so far but currently satisfied. Much more easier to use compared to my petrol one, and less stressful especially when the pull rope snaps, time and time again.

14.5.2020

It cuts efficiently. The adjustable mowing height is easy to use. The collapsable grass collecting box is very well designed and easy to use.

Fantastic cuts really well and very light too, extremely easy to operate, fantastic quality what you expect from Bosch.
