I am still waiting for Zelda, but so far this is one of the best 3ds games you can purchase. I have also played Street Fighter, Ridge Racer and Pilotwings. Ghost Recon is my second favourite game after Pilotwings. Actually, in most aspects it's better than Pilotwings, but this is a matter of preference. After all, these are totally different games.I should mention that I usually don't like military themed games and I haven't played too many turn-based strategies before. However, I enjoyed Ghost Recon and I have managed to finish the campaign mode on the Elite difficulty level. The game is very long in my opinion, especially if you choose Elite. There are 7 chapters and each chapter has about 5 missions. It took me about 1.5 hours on average to complete a single mission, so about 50 hours of game play in the Campaign mode. However, more than 30% of the game consists of the Skirmish Missions. I have only played 3 of these and they seem more difficult than the standard Campaign missions.Missions increase in difficulty, although there are exceptions. I have found the last chapter of the game quite easy. Anyway, it will be easy to pick up.You will start each mission with a few characters, each with his own attributes. Through the campaign, you will learn how to use their attributes in order to complete tasks easier. Tasks are quite diverse and mission locations change from chapter to chapter. Also, the number of characters you can choose is sometimes different. These aspects make the game less boring and more challenging. What I really enjoyed about this game in the end, was the fact that this was the only 3ds game so far where I didn't feel like throwing the console out the window. If you focus, you will finish most of your missions from the first try. Even if you loose, you will know what you did wrong and apart from a few exceptions, you will most likely finish the missions from the second try. There were a few things which I didn't like about this game. It would have been great if it had an undo option, at least for a single action. Sometimes you can accidentally press the wrong thing and the mission can be compromised. Also, the lack of multiple slots for saving is a problem. If you are near the end of a mission and without paying attention you save the game when you are in a "checkmate" situation, you will have to start the mission again from the beginning.Another negative aspect would be the graphics, which are not that great. The 3d effect will make the game look a lot better, but without it, I find the graphics quite poor. Also, the scenery looks very greyish and similar from mission to mission. I also find the story very poor, but again, this might be a matter of preference. Because of these last aspects, I will give the game 4 stars for "fun".Overall, I would recommend Ghost Recon to anyone. You should enjoy it, even if you haven't played similar games before.

Firstly, just to let you know. I am not a a massive fan of the turn based strategy genre. I have played advance wars on the DS but never could really get into to it. I know people loved those games but I found the difficulty curve and design just wasn't for me. The only other turn based strategy games I have played were the Ufo / Xcom enemy unknown games, which I did love. Good job then that this game is made but the same folks behind that series then.Ghost Recon Shadow Wars is a fantastic game. It shares nothing in common with its older brothers on the Home consoles, other than its name. But don't let you worry you. This game is fantastic game and without the Ghost Recon title it would have still been fantastic.Gameplay: Game is very easy to pick up and play. The controls are easy, and the first missions show you how everything works, i.e movement/firing spaces, line of sight and so on. The missions are varied enough, and the characters you control all act differently. You have an assault soldier, a heavy gunner, a medic, a sniper, a engineer and a stealth soldier. All are usefull against different targets, and you'll have to use this to survive, especially when heavily outnumbered..The graphics: Ok they aren't the best I have seen on the 3DS so far but all in all they are very good and done well. The 3D effect is very nice, with telegraph poles and plumes of smoke appearing as coming out of the screen. The character design is good and everything has a near future look to it, making it all fit nicely together. The sound: Again very impressive. Great gun fire effects, massive booms for the explosions and a great atmospheric soundtrack. Only problem with the sound is no speech. The 3DS can hold and store more information than the DS so there is no excuse for no speech at all.Lifespan: The Main campaign offers hours of fun and tactical play, with extra skirmish and multi-player levels being unlocked as you progress through the different difficulty settings. This game is packed full of hours of varied and actioned packed play and has a real go back for just one more go appeal.Overview. If you are a turn based strategy fan buy this game, its one of the best in the genre. If you aren't still buy it. Anyone should be able to pick this up and play at least past the first few levels. After that you will be hooked and it may take all your resolve to put it down again.A++++ of a game.

Reading the other reviews here, it seems like some people expected a first or third person shooter. That is certainly not the case! Ghost Recon is a turn-based shooter and a very good one at that. Being a big fan of advance wars and age of empires on the original DS, I was glad to see something similar as a launch title. The turn-based nature of the game is well suited to the pick up and play nature of the 3DS, and if you turn up the movement speed in the options, you won't get frustrated waiting for the enemy to make their move. The game's story is extremely typical Commando fare, with cliched characters, unlikely to elicit an emotional reaction at any point in the game. In all honesty,I certainly didn't expect anything more, and I'm glad the game accepts some people just want to play the game. The characters themselves can all be upgraded with new weapons and armour, something you will enjoy a great deal. Each squad member is unique enough to be useful in different situations and some missions require that you select a smaller squad, which will require some consideration to hand pick the best team. The levels are well designed, occasionally funnelling you through tough corridors, at other times allowing multiple routes. The graphics aren't fantastic, but make good use of visual cues, and I never found myself wishing for more. It really depends how you feel about graphics, but don't expect to be blown away. The game shines when it all comes together. You can have your sniper on a high flank picking off targets, your stealthy character sneaking around killing enemies with a knife and your heavy weapons guy soaking up the bullets. The more time you take to learn the squad's nuances the more fun the game becomes.Beyond the average 3D that adds little to the overall experience, there is plenty of depth to this game. A lengthy campaign with additional side missions as well and one-console multiplayer won't have you playing until next year, but the game is far from short and well worth the price. If you are unsure, I'd urge you take the risk, as I didn't expect to enjoy the game as much as I did!

I would never have considered this; none of its design or marketing indicates that it's a relatively cerebral turn-based strategy game. Other games in the series are action games. However, I was very fortunate and won some 3DS games in a competition. When I looked at reviews to see which ones to keep, I discovered the true nature of this one and decided to give it a go.Here you have six or fewer individual soldiers, with specific abilities, and a series of campaign missions. It's turn-based and square grid-based. At first you're led by the nose -- do this, then do this... so that you can learn about what the troops, and the enemies can do.Later you have much more flexibility to plan tactics.3D doesn't have to be used in a flashy way; in this game it makes the whole game feel a bit like animated tabletop wargaming on an elaborate set. The terrain, elevation and structures affect the gameplay and being able to see them in 3D makes it easier to make placement decisions. It's possible to move around the camera, and there are some rather nice 3d sweeps at the beginning of each mission. It's all very charming and fun to play, and quite addictive. The 12 rating reflects the subject matter; terrain and characters are realistic and soldiers are 'killed' with guns. But there is no blood or visible injury and I would be happy for a slightly younger strategy-minded child to play it.I've been playing on the medium - Veteran - difficulty level. When I tried playing an early mission on 'Elite' I got pounded; but with Veteran although I've lost the odd scenario, I can mostly just about pull through. Some have said this is an RPG, but there's no skill tree; each character levels up in pre-determined ways. It's also a big game; reassuring in these days of shorter games. As well as the lengthy campaign, there are 'skirmish' missions that don't fit into the main campaign but illustrate different playing styles, and a head-to-head mode. I think it does a good job of both showing what the 3DS can do, and showing why you might spend £30 on a DS game rather than a couple of pounds on an iPhone game.

What a great game. For under a tenner you get a solid turn-based strategy game, complete with a lengthy campaign, unlockable skirmish missions and even some multiplayer. It's fair to say Ghost Recon Shadow Wars is not what you would expect from the franchise, but it's a refreshing new direction which plays to the 3DS' strengths.Graphically it's OK with chunky character models and reasonably detailed environments. The dinky little Advance Wars-like vehicles are disappointing, but otherwise it looks pretty good. You get the odd cutscene as well, although the main one I've come across so far is an animation of a drone launching a missile when you call in an airstrike. The 3D is subtle and is only used to give a bit of depth to the top-down view.As the action is turn-based you have to think carefully before deploying your troops, which fall into different classes (sniper, assault, medic, combat engineer and so on). Objectives are quite varied so you are always being challenged, and the AI on Veteran (normal) difficulty is aggressive enough to keep you on your toes, but if you're a seasoned strategy gamer you'll get past them without too much trouble. You can also save after each turn. Your soldiers can be upgraded with more health and better equipment as you progress through the missions. There isn't much to it, but enough to make you think about what will be the most useful. If you enjoy a good strategy game like Advance Wars or the elderly XCOM, this will be right up your street. It is very different to a regular Ghost Recon game, and frankly I suspect Ubisoft have slapped the licence over the top of another game to shift a few more copies. It's great to play and a good challenge, so well worth the investment for your 3DS.

I usually have no interest in the Ghost Recon brand and am especially wary of Ubisoft launch titles, but after I heard this will be a tactical turn based game headed by Julian Gollop (of X-Com fame) I kept my eyes on it. When amazon.co.uk ran the pre-order offer of getting a 3DS with this game at a reduced price, I took the leap of faith and ordered, even though there was a review embargo in place and I had no idea yet if the game was worth playing or not.Now over 30 hours of gameplay later, I can definitely say that I do not regret my decision. I'm still not done with the campaign mode and after that there is still the skirmish missions I've unlocked along the way. There is also offline multiplayer missions to be played on one 3DS via hot-seat mode.Since I want to keep this short, I'm not going to write about story, graphics and gameplay and such. Read an in-depth review for that. However, if you do like turn based strategy games like Advance Wars, Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics A2, I highly expect that you will enjoy this game as well. It has its own style of gameplay and definitely plays like a game that can stand next to the greats and not just fill the time until a new iteration of those comes along.Just keep your expectations regarding difficulty in check, as I'm playing it on the hardest of the three and it feels just somewhat too easy now and then.It definitely gets 5 stars for fun and being addictive, but things like the lack of online multiplayer and some small issues that could be improved here and there in a sequel make me give it 4 stars overall. Still, you wouldn't want to miss out on this game unless you can't stand turn based games at all.

When the 3DS first hit the shelves, I picked one up, but found that there were not any appealing release games out for quite a while. I purchased a few - Street Fighter (not my cup of tea), Ridge Racer (not too bad), then later on Starfox 64 (not brilliant) and Ocarina of Time (incredibly overrated). As a result, I favoured my existing DS games for almost a year before I really started appreciating the power of the 3DS.I had this game bought for me a few months after the 3DS was released but have only recently played it, and I was in for a shock. Easily the best early 3DS game (probably now surpassed by Mario 3D Land and New Super Mario Bros. 2), it provides an easy-to-play tactical battle which almost plays like a puzzle game. The campaign mode is full of similar levels and objectives, but the variation in enemies, weaponry and ghosts is vast. You have to utilise the individual skills of each team member to overcome the enemy. I have completed the game (including all extra skirmish modes) on Veteran/Normal difficulty and found it enjoyable and very addictive, with a lengthy main mode and a fair few sub-modes (with zombies!).If you want something easy to play that you can keep coming back to (with the added bonus of saving your progress halfway through any mission) that you don't need to be a hardcore gamer to get to grips with, then this is a definite purchase for 3DS owners. Even more seasoned gamers will enjoy the tactical aspect of it and find some parts a good challenge. Thoroughly recommended.

I'm new to DS games and the Ghost Recon series in particular. I was hugely disappointed to discover that it's a turn-based game when I first played it. I was expecting something like Halo or a modern version of Quake and I thought thirty quid plus was a bit much, even though I'd paid less as part of the bundle. However as I've played it a little more (a couple of hours in now), it's grown on me. The graphics and gameplay are good, even though I've only played at novice level (or whatever it's called) so far and it does work reasonably well as a 3d game. I don't understand the 12 rating so far, I'll be happy to let my 9 year old play it. I was going to give it 3 stars for the disappointment factor, but the extra one is because it does start to look better as you get into it and I'm sure I'm going to enjoy it. Anyway I'm keen to play the next levels when I've got a spare few minutes, so that must say something!Think a much improved Command and Conquer rather than Halo.Update: A few more days in and I'm still playing the campaign and enjoying it a lot. I've moved up to veteran level and I find it reasonably challenging at that level (I've had to re-play a couple of levels already) Between my son & myself we've played just under 24 hours total and I'm still ahead of him. Apparently I've completed 11% of the campaign, so this isn't a "one day wonder" game. Bumping my rating from 4 to 5 stars now.

My favourite 3DS game so far (Luigi's mansion 2 may yet dethrone it) and an absolute steal at the £6 or so I paid for it. I'm not going to review the game in the entirety it deserves but suffice to say this is an exceptional little turn based strategy game befitting the Ghost Recon name. The story is surprisingly engaging, the graphics are superb; fully utilising the 3D capability, and the game mechanics are highly polished. I've burned through hours and hours of this game and I'm still yet to explore all the content. The story mode itself is a very generous size and completion of this unlocks a wealth of other modes and content.I'm not saying all the best games on Nintendo's consoles are 1stparty titles but I wouldn't have been shocked if this game was just phoned it and took advantage of the DS's good reputation with turn based strategies to make a quick buck. So for this game to turn out to be almost iconic of the quality of games available on the 3DS is something of a surprise. Put simply, if you own a 3DS then this has to be in your collection. And if you don't own a 3DS, this is absolutely a game worth picking one up for.

Don't be fooled into thinking this is an FPS like the Ghost Recon games on the XBox etc, it's more like Advance Wars or Age of Empires etc on the DS. It's a top-down turn based game, where you control your soldiers (and allies) to do certain missions. You don't seem to have the 'building' aspects of the other games though (at least, I haven't come across anything like that yet, in my playing of the game). As someone who loved the Advance Wars games, that's one of the reasons I bought this game, and it is good so far. The 3D effect is effective, but not necessary for the game, so if the 3D hurts your eyes after a bit, you can turn it off without losing out too much.Because it's a turn based game,it means you can have two player games both sharing the same 3DS, which obviously wouldn't be possible if it was a FPS. There are a variety of 2 player game modes that are available, and you unlock more as you play through the single player campaign. So, if you like turn based combat games like Advance Wars, Age of Empires etc, then give this a go. It won't disappoint. If you want an FPS on the 3DS, then you'll have to look elsewhere.

Quite a pleasant surprise to come across this game. I would never have bought it if I had not read into it to find out it was actually a turn-based RPG kind of game. The graphics are pretty good, and up to the usual 3DS standard. Sometimes dialog can take too long and I end up skipping, but the good news there is that you don't need to understand the story to play the game. The reason why I didn't give this a full five-star review is because of one rather cheap game mechanic, where you can reach a certain point in a level where enemies will pop up as part of a cut-scene, and if you happen to have one of your team badly placed, you can find yourself powerless as they are killed in one turn, meaning you have to restart or reload the level and remember where the enemies pop up. This is not a game-breaking mechanic, but it does get quite frustrating and defeats the purpose of strategy.Other than that, a very good game that's accessible even for non-RPG players.

A very enjoyable turn-based strategy game. The game does a good job to lead you through a set of tutorial missions to familiarise you with the different characters in your team, before unleashing you on more difficult missions. There is a linear skills tree for each of your characters to spend your hard-earned stars to further increase their competency.Once you're done with the campaign, some fun and challenging skirmish missions set challenging parameters that differ from the main campaign (such as rescuing survivors of a zombie apocalypse and equipping them in order to complete the mission).Graphics are nothing to write home about but do the job adequately. The user interface is generally well thought out,but the overview map is hidden by unit information, which can be a hindrance when trying to plan your attack.Overall, a very good value purchase that offers hours of thoughtful fun.

I was listening to a gaming podcast and somebody said this was an underrated little gem for the new handheld system. The fact that this TCGR game is not a FPS is firstly surprising, the fact that it is a strategy/turn based game is astonishing. This game is really, really good. There are a ton of missions in campaign mode and even though they do get repetitive there is pleanty in this game to outweigh that. Building up your characters after each battle is great. This is a typical strategy game but does everything right. Certainly one of the better 3DS games to be released and well worth picking up for £15. The 3D is nice but doesn't make the game. The music is nice and atmospheric and I am just going to repeat that this is a little gem.Buy it!

Fans of Julian Gollop's previous work (X-COM, Laser Squad, etc) will find a lot to like in Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars - it takes his tried-and-tested play mechanics and gives them a Tom Clancy makeover. The result, while not stunningly original, is a solid-as-a-rock turn-based strategy game offering many hours of entertainment. There are moans - the cliched characters, the lack on online multiplayer (surely a casualty of getting the game prepped for launch day), the less-than-dazzling graphics (the game's DS roots are very visible) - but they're not killers.Pound for pound, this offers the best value of all the 3DS launch games, and a must for strategy fans.

17.12.2014

I bought this as a launch game on the 3DS - and finally finished it last week - well, it says I have 50% - but I have done the main campaign on Veteran leve! OK, I didn't played it every day, but played it regularly and enjoyed this title every single time. The ramping up of the difficulty is perfect; there are loads of levels and a satisfying upgrade system. This was my first 3DS game, and remains my favourite. A real under-rated gem in the 3DS catalogue. The only game of this genre that is better is Advance Wars - but there still isn't a native 3DS version of that.
