This is small and light (1.3 pounds) but has serious features you usually don't see with a pack this size. It has a hip belt (mesh at back), chest strap (adjustable height, removable), breathable mesh over paneled back foam padding, breathable padded shoulder straps with mesh and holes cut in the foam, and provisions for a water reservoir. Some early reviews have lowered ratings because, as the product description clearly says, this doesn't come with a hydration reservoir. Most packs made to work with hydration reservoirs don't come with one. That way those who already have one or more reservoirs that will work don't need to pay for yet another with the pack, and those who don't have one can still easily get it separately.A wide variety of reservoirs will work. The reservoir pouch is 9" wide, 15" tall, up to 3" deep, with a hang-loop with a quick-release clip above it.The fabric is high-strength (Robic) nylon. It's pretty water-resistant, but you can get water inside this from rain or water on the ground. The fabric and seams feel plenty strong for any normal use. (I don't know what the "elastin" coating is supposed to be, but it's unlikely to actually be elastin.)The padding on shoulder straps is little under 1/4" thick, so on the thin side, but this is a small pack. It's comfortable for normal weight. The foam layer of the padding on the back seems about the same thickness, but it's over a semi-stiff sheet of plastic and covered by a fairly thick mesh that increase the padding. The peel-away pull tab to quickly unzip the zippers for the main compartment works OK. (You can see it work in the video at the upper left of the main product page.) Now I need to figure out what I can put inside that I'll be in that much hurry to get to. Toilet paper maybe. The bottle pockets on the sides are about 6" tall and big enough around to handle something a little over 4" in diameter, with some elastic to help secure something that size. The elastic doesn't have any effect for items smaller than 4" in diameter. Smaller bottles may slip out if the bag is turned over far enough, though if the bag is full it tightens up the pockets. There's a drainage hole at the bottom of each pocket. The pockets cut into the interior space some when filled, about half in and half out. A stiff plastic collar at the top keeps the opening open to help put bottles back in.The stretchy mesh phone pocket on the front of the left shoulder strap easily accepts my largish Essential phone. There's room even for a fairly large case, about 3-1/2" x 6", though one that big will be harder to get in and out.At the top back inside the main compartment there's a zippered mesh pocket about 6-1/2" tall and 7-1/2" wide that hangs down. There's a strip of flat loops to attach stuff to along each zipper.Lifetime warranty against defects not caused by normal wear or misuse.Made in Phillipines.

This Stir Unisex Hiking Pack by Thule is better suited as a day pack as it arrives because there is no hydration reservoir included. This is an ultra lightweight pack and the materials and workmanship are top notch, as you would expect from Thule. It features one, large, main compartment that is easily accessed through a dual zipper closure. In that compartment is a large, deep, pocket with an elastic edge. The pocket is made of water resistant fabric and is designed to hold a hydration reservoir, which is NOT included. There is also a small, zippered, mesh pocket with a small carabiner for keys. The back of the pack is padded and covered in a mesh fabric for comfort however, there is no padding or extra reinforcement on the bottom of the pack. Should you decide to carry a computer or tablet, you'll need a separate, padded sleeve to protect them against bangs and bumps. There are two, thin, orange grab straps on the front and top of the pack. Along the side of either zipper is a strip of 5 hanging loops to hang extra gear using carabiners (not included.) There are two, large, side pockets for large water bottles. These pockets do not have elastic and smaller bottles will slip out unless you are able to tether them to the pack using a carabiner on the cap tether to attach it to one of the hanging loops. There is also a small strap on the bottom front of the pack to clip on a GPS or compass. The back pack straps are well padded and have a mesh fabric on the underside for ventilation. There are removable, adjustable chest straps and adjustable waist straps that tuck back into the pack when not in use. In addition, there is a zippered, stretch mesh pouch on one strap for holding a cell phone but it wasn't large enough for our larger phones with Otterbox cases. There are more hanging loops along each strap and a couple of elastic straps for holding more items.Out of the packaging, I don't see this as being hiking ready since no hydration reservoir is included and as far as I can tell, Thule doesn't sell one so you'll need to order another brand and hope it fits. Also, the lack of padding in the bottom will require that you have padded sleeves for any electronics or fashion your own padding for the bottom of the pack. On the plus side, this pack holds a lot. You could easily hold a couple of days clothing and some food.I think the biggest draw to this pack is its light weight and large capacity. It weighs just over a pound and is well appointed except for the glaring lack of a hydration reservoir (even to buy optionally.) I would like to give it 3 1/2 stars but have rounded up to 4 since the product description says clearly that there is no hydration reservoir included.

First, I don't know why everyone is giving this thing a low score for not including the water pack. The item description says, "Stay hydrated with the dedicated hydration sleeve with drink tube exit port and two side water bottle pockets (hydration reservoir sold separately)"POSITIVES- The shoulder straps seem like they'd be uncomfortable, but they have a padding that I really like. I have not used this pack for camping/hiking, but I wore it around for 45 minutes or so, when filled, and it was very comfortable.- the ability to use or not use the buckles is great, and you can hide them when not in use so they don't hang down and bounce all over the place.-Carries a lot more than it seems like it would.-The drink holder on the side accommodates my 32 oz Nalgene, when a lot of backpack drink holders do not. If you have a smaller water bottle it might not work for you, but if you're actually using this thing in the wild, I'm guessing you have a large water bottle anyway.-This thing is the perfect size for a hike or casual camping trip, which are the only things I ever expect to do. It's also super lightweight.-Love this colorNEGATIVES-The phone pouch on the strap is handy and a great idea, but my iPhone X fits so awkwardly within it that I can't imagine them having designed it for modern smart phones. I can't even see someone with a Note getting it to fit in there.-I don't think I'd ever buy one of those water packs, so the inclusion of the hole for the straw is sort of annoying. Either sell them together or don't have it be like that, especially since the water bag would take up more room than I'd like to lose within the relatively small pack.

Here’s what I want in a day pack: Comfortable straps. A large-capacity compartment with a smaller separate pocket. Inside zipper pocket for valuables. Side pockets for water bottles. A padded, mesh back. The Thule Hiking Pack has all these features. What I also want is an outside zipper pocket for easy-reach items. A carbineer for pocket knives, tool sets, or keys. A padded or reinforced bottom is important. The Thule does not have these features. It’s a stripped-down, lightweight bag with an extremely comfortable fit and carrying profile. You barely know you have this pack on your back. It’s a serviceable pack that doesn’t offer a lot of versatility or durability. This may be a good fit for city street hikes, and low-impact, paved hiking and biking trips. I do not recommend it for off-trail adventures. Even so, it's a good addition to your day pack options.

Comfortable, versatile, rugged. Made of very light, strong material. I've owned a dozen Thule products in my lifetime - every one was well designed and durable. Thule puts a great deal of thought and engineering into its products, and that shows. The ergonomics on this pack are great and work well for me (67 inches) or my girlfriend (65 inches). This bag is not designed to hold delicate electronics. It's designed for carrying camping/hiking essentials and it does that well. Works with Camelbak and other hydration bags. Also has outer sleeves for water bottles if you prefer that method of carrying your H2O. The only negative of this pack, in my opinion is the front cell mesh pocket. It can't hold a large smartphone like my Pixel 2 XL.

This would make a good pack to hike around a city or when on vacation. It would also be suitable for day hikes. This does not come with a water reservoir. I agree with other reviewers who have noted that there is no instructions for picking a hydration pack. My son likes using this for boy scout hikes and requested I buy the reservoir but Thule does not sell them on Amazon and there are guidelines for choosing one from a different retailer. There is one pocket inside so it is a bit difficult to find things in the pack if you have a lot of stuff in there. I think that at this price point, there should be a few more features and an included hydration pack. I would give this between 3-4 stars
