The Persistence is an effective and fairly frightening first-person VR horror game, which utilizes the VR experience very well. You play as a crew member on the vast space station “The Persistence”, which has undergone some horrific circumstances and all of the other people are now dead or mutated zombies. Your mission is to work through the multiple decks and levels to get vital systems up and running again, and even, possibly, escape? The things you need to know from the start are, first of all, that the gameplay flow is modular. Every time you die (which is often!), you awaken again in a recovery hub and the game world resets to a new layout. Theres no hoarding of items either,so you wake up with NONE of the weapons, health packs or gadgets you have found. And each new attempt at completing an objective gives you a random layout of deck corridors, cabins and rooms, with a new placement of enemies, “shopping” points and loot placement. So no learning of routes or strategies - the game gives you a different set of obstacles and equipment each time. All you keep is the two types pf currency you can pick up or steal from enemies, and on each re-awakening you can invest these in upgrading your character stats and clothing perks. This at least helps you improve your progress, as you gradually increase your strengths, skills and health points. And the game is not easy. Enemies are brutal, and your fragile human body will be torn to pieces in seconds if you aren’t clever. A lot of success comes down to stealth more than firepower. You’ll never have much weaponry on your person, as you can only use what you find per attempt. The game gives you tools to help though, you have an “X Ray vision” view which gives you a brief glimpse of hidden enemies, as well as a shield which blocks and at higher upgrade levels even damages enemies. You have a short local teleport skill which can be a life saver when surrounded, and you have a crouch option to duck into vents and hiding places. Luckily, upgrades on weapons are permanent so after a lot of deaths, and investment of currency, the weapons you find start becoming the stronger and faster versions. The VR play experience is terrific. As you creep about, ghoulish noises alert you to nearby enemy presence. There is always a map which is invaluable. Doors to lockers and ventilation ducts can be opened to sneak into or grab hidden loot. Each level contains numerous “shop” stations scattered randomly where you can create weapons or support gadgets to assist you. Some armed enemies also drop them. Try them all out, they are great fun. The level missions normally contain a special challenge room where extra high value loot awaits you for completing a trial such as a wave of enemies, or a speed dash to unlock a terminal before a timer runs out. The levels also end with an extra tricky challenge to complete the objective. These are normally pumped-up versions of the random challenge rooms, sometimes with puzzle elements or labyrinthine layouts to get through, and it’s unlikely you’ll complete any of them on a first try, so patience is needed. If this review makes the game sound like a repetitive chore, then I’ve given an unfair impression. I really enjoyed it. But you do have to embrace the concept of trial and error gameplay, and the randomness of each new layout can sometimes put you in impossible to beat maps where a room full of enemies is in your way before you’ve picked up any weapons or reached any of the “shop” points. A positive way to think of it is that each time you start playing, the game is completely different (due to the random map generation), so you won’t ever get bored by failing in the same place over and over! The difficulty level is as unforgiving as “Dark Souls” but autosaving of completed objectives gives you hope to carry on, and a wonderful sense of acheivement. Even partially completed objectives are saved, for instance in an early end-of-level challenge you have to shoot waves of enemies with a harpoon gun and make sure their bodies fly into an energy field to power it up (Now doesn’t that already sound like fun?). If you don’t power up all of the portals before dying, the ones that did get activated remain powered up on your next attempt. Which is generous.I think The Persistence is a worthy addition to your VR library. The main campaign is not that long, but remember how every play through changes? You could play for hours just attempting different play styles depending on the configuration you get each time. I did this, both having fun, and saving up currency at the same time to max out all my upgradeable stats and equipment. There are also mini games outside of the main mission, if you fancy an extra challenge. This game might give you motion sickness at first as it involves free movement, but the teleport mechanic can help to minimise this, as well as being a great feature with it’s own uses. A solid gaming experience.

I would say this more of a AAA game for psvr. The length of the game is pretty decent, 5 missions (decks) and it’s taken me around 2 hours of game time to complete 1 mission so looking around the 10 hour mark.Obviously this depends how you play and how many times you die etc.Graphics wise I would say it’s one of the more sharper games, and it’s not hard at all to get immersed the environment is brilliant.Yes you start from a beginning spawn point every time you die, but you don’t have to replay the progress you did, it still remembers the point you got up to so you don’t lose progress. The environment is procedurally generated so placement of monsters etc is at random. You can upgrade health, shields, attack etc and also upgrade weapons and the 3D effect really is cool! Seeing things float in front of your face and looking down to see your gun yeah it’s awesome.I would recommend the game if you need a GOOD game to play

... it's like the game Aliens could have been if it had VR. Creepy, good quality graphics, great lighting and sound, and solid gameplay for PSVR. Very scary indeed. Love the fact that levels are proceduraly generated so layout isn't the same everytime you play. So it has re-playabiliuty value too.Read full review...

Once you get past the harsh difficulty barrier in this game you really start to enjoy the looting and working your way through the maps. Looks good too and feels like there’s a lot of depth to it

Loved it. Took a while to realise you don't have to keep replaying each Deck. You need to unlock the decks specific keycard.Find this by searching and killing everyone on the deck.
