I was particularly wary about buying this game, to say the least! I've read some pretty bad reviews. One in particular by a gaming website and there was a lot of swearing and negativity, not sure why swearing is needed in a professional review. Anyway I caved and bought this with my £5 discount voucher from the Nintendo store as I got a free t-shirt. However I have decided to post my review here on Amazon as there is a larger target market and to be fair I usually buy from Amazon (or[...]).So I got back into gaming because of the Wii, and then I bought a Wii U because it was cheaper than the PS4 and Xbox1. Little did I know that there was such hatred for Nintendo and the Wii U that soon 3rd party developers would not be producing games for the Wii U.Now this I don't understand because I've played the Batman Arkham series on the Wii U and then I've also played it on the PS4 (which I bought for the Arkham Knight) and you know what the graphics are pretty much the same, in fact there are some better looking games on the Wii U, Super Mario 3d World to name one.The game-pad has come into some stick over the years, but you know what the Wii U game-pad is an innovation and after playing pretty much the whole library of Wii U games and now a large chunk of PS4 games, the game-pad outstrips the dual shock 4 by a long stretch. Sure it could/should have been a bit smaller, less chunky etc, but it is a HD handheld device that doubles up as a gaming innovation. You can use it for checking maps and selecting gear etc without interrupting the game or off TV mode. This is something that neither the PS4 nor Xbox1 offer. Nintendo are innovative, fact! In Star Fox Zero (SFZ) it doubles up as the cockpit. So what's with the history of (my) gaming, well it leads me onto the game-pad and motion control for SFZ, yes it takes a while to get use too, but once you have, the game is fun. And that is what gaming is meant to be right, and Fun = Nintendo. For the controls you can either use the left and right sticks to control the ship and targeting, and for tighter more accurate shooting use motion control, now I have to be honest I'm still trying to master this, but I'm half way there, hopefully ill just be using full motion control soon. I've also found that the two view-ports e.g. the TV and game-pad actually benefits the game, particularly in close combat sequences. One slight grievance is that I wish they had made the cockpit view look more like a cockpit with a dash and buttons etc, as it is, it is a bit naff.So why all the bad reviews! I'll tell you why, everyone is afraid of change, they see it as a bad thing. If a game isn't "must kill zombies (said with hands stretched out in front)" or "Must shoot bad guys (COD)" it's not worth playing. This game is the opposite of that and unfortunately it appears to be the penultimate swan song for the Wii U (Zelda Wii U being the swan song). Star Fox Zero is colourful, vibrant and fun. It looks like gaming of old days. I've been playing Ratchet & Clank on my PS4 which looks like a Pixar movie, in comparison the spacecrafts/vehicles in SFZ are a bit blocky, but it is a true classic game. As I progress I know that I will enjoy this game even more, I'm already planning to go back to replay the levels to see what I've missed.Ignore all the hate reviews and buy Star Fox Zero.Completed the game, lost a star as you have to keep calibrating the crosshairs constantly, more than firing the guns!

Innovative things tend to be derided on release and then lauded after the event. But I want to laud it right now.Star Fox Zero has met with a lot of criticism, mostly focusing on the control scheme. It works like this: You control the ship with the two sticks, and for precise aiming you use the Gamepad screen. It takes adjustment, but it works. That is, it works as it would if you were flying a spaceship whilst also manning guns. Which is why the 2-player co-op, where one person flies and the other shoots, feels easier and more like a regular game. The plot is secondary, to be honest. You are basically given a series of missions, mostly involving shooting everything that isn’t your wingmen,or infiltrating some enemy base. Hold down the left trigger and the screen focuses on your current objective. Again, very straightforward. That’s not to say the game is easy. The goals can be tough, the dogfights challenging, and the bosses can be mean. But it’s not a punishing game – the penalty for failure is starting the mission over or from a checkpoint. And you will improve. You’ll get used to when it’s best to do a loop or when to hit the retros.Parental guidance: There’s nothing to worry about here. The graphics are bright and cartoony in style and there’s no swearing or gore. The standard difficulty may be too much for youngsters, but apparently there’s an invulnerability mode where you can’t die, you’re just going for the high score. I say “apparently” because I haven’t tried this mode. You get to control numerous vehicles. You’ll have your favourite. There’s the standard spacecraft (the Arwing); there’s a sprinting robot, which can hop about and transform into a flying craft; for slower missions, a gyrocopter craft that can dangle a little Wall-E robot to hack doors; and a tank for sheer firepower. The vehicles are chosen on your behalf, depending on the mission.Another aspect to come under scrutiny is the length of the game – about 4 to 5 hours for the campaign. As someone who laments the jack-of-all-trades overfilling of modern games, this is refreshing to me. It’s a game in the arcade tradition: replayability over sheer duration. And Zero has plenty of replayability, in the form of alternate routes and challenge modes. Finally, I would like to say that this is the first game I’ve played which has really given me a sense of being in an enormous space battle. (Perhaps aficionados of the genre will be able to cite better examples, I don’t know.) The graphics have come in for some stick, but honestly, once everything is moving it’s poetry in motion. For this reviewer Star Fox Zero has been a wonderful experience, and the ideal send-off for a groundbreaking and underappreciated console.

Really enjoyable game. I spent a couple of hours playing two player with my young son, where I was controlling the vehicle and he was using the game pad to do the shooting. Really novel way to team up in a game - you really do have to communicate well and work together. Each completed mission does feel like an achievement you both worked towards. I then went back any played through some of the missions when he had gone to bed and the single player controls present a far different challenge. You are having to switch between views quite regularly, so you line up the vehicle, before jumping on the pad and working on shooting the enemies. The only mission I struggled with was the landmaster (tank)mission right at the end with the boss - as trying to drive around and shoot the right spots was really challenging. So all in a all, a really fun game that can be enjoyed either with your kids or on your own. I can't wait to get home from work to crack into it some more. Which is exactly what you expect from a main Nintendo title like Star Fox.EDIT - 5th May 2016There have been a couple of comments below suggesting that this review is a viral marketing review - so not an actual review. The reason I didn't purchase it from Amazon was because I couldn't get the First Print edition (which included a physical copy of star fox guard) - so I had to go with another online retailer, who still had the First Print edition at a reasonable price.A few weeks later, my son and I are still enjoying the game - so the five star rating remains. Hope this helps.

Star Fox Zero takes the heart of the classic SNES game and builds further on the foundations set by Lylat Wars (Starfox 64). The control scheme is unusual but inspired and once you learn how to use the two different views available to you the game has surprising depth.Every time I play it I put it down excited. That's a feeling I've not felt from many games since Quake 2 and one I feel can't be generated by a poor game. It's a simple game to play but with many different elements. There's not only the rear view scrolling shooter side that has been the heart of the games since the original but also simplified space sim elements built on the 'all range mode' battles introduced on the N64.On top of that there's 3rd person action/platform elements to punctuate. The game has a lot of replayability and a fantastic approach to difficulty. Novice players can focus on reaching the end of a level and then practising individual levels to get a better score in the main game mode but arcade mode might appeal to more experienced players.Arcade mode is unlocked by defeating Andross and offers an experience similar to the classic games but with the added challenge of not being allowed to build a store of extra lives and a record for both most hits and fastest time for a full play through. What's important though is that the game's just bags of fun. It's a shooter with a throbbing arcade heart.

*Bought elsewhere as it was sold out in amazon*This game will be divisive among general gamers due to the controls but once you put enough time on it is a really great and entertaining experience and is then when the controls just "click".Star Fox Zero is for me a great Wii U game. As a said before we can argue that the control scheme is unconventional but it's fitting for a game that goes out of its way to surprise you with additional modes, trophy rewards, hidden locations, and a spin-off with gameplay never before attempted within the series and in any other console. The game is closely inspired in Star Fox 64 that was amazing in its own right.Game is full of secrets/hidden paths and extra modes. The graphics while not amazing serve right and mostly move at 60fps which, considering that game is rendering two different viewpoints, is an amazing accomplishment if you ask me. The soundtack, ahhh, that soundtrack and the voice acting are also top notch.Like I have already said, there's an adjustment period when learning to use the gamepad in conjunction with the TV screen but once you really find your groove, these controls make a whole lot of sense.

Fans of Lyat Wars on the N64 will love this.I'll be the first to admit the controls take abit of getting used to, i wish that i could just use the Nintendo pro controller and play and if i could this would of got a solid 5 stars from me, the controls are by no means bad now but it took me around an hour to get used to them.Onto the game itself, WOW, i love the graphics, vibrant and colourful, the battles look great. On the 3rd stage though I did notice a lot of slow down when there was huge explosions going on but this wasn't enough to bother me in the end as it does look fantastic and Nintendo is all about fun!I've done around 5 planets so far which have all varied and the missions have beenfun. There are new vehicles this time round such as a gyro copter (which took me a while to get used to control wise). If you haven't played the N64 version of lylat wars (or star fox 64 in the US) or even the star fox 3ds remake then you will still find enjoyment from the game, buy it, see what the fuss is all about.Great fun, i love it. Will keep me entertained for a while.

I didn't buy the game from Amazon as I didn't think the pre-order price was good. There is so much negativity about the controls that I fell I had to have my say. There are some people who do not even own the game and are on a vendetta trying to discredit it.Star fox zero looks and plays fantastic. The design of the game is excellent. It reminds me of the games Nintendo used to make when they were at their peak. Today modern games have all become 'pick up and play'. Well Star fox zero is not 'pick up and play'. It requires the player to learn the controls, then the experience becomes ultra rewarding. Games in the past required this, but unfortunately we are living in a world where people want instant gratification. The casual gamer need not apply here and it may be too difficult for very young players. This game is aimed at gamers.I totally believe (I know I only have it 2 days) that it the best game Nintendo have made this generation. Without a shadow of a doubt this is the greatest Star fox game ever. Proper old school. I absolutely love it.

Fans of Lylat Wars on the N64 will love Starfox Zero as it really does capture the spirit of the original in many ways and has the same replayability factor. It's great to see the original voice actors returning for this one and many of the classic quotes such as "Do a barrel roll!" etc! The controls are absolutely fine and I got to grips with them immediately. The only thing stopping me giving this 5 stars is the variety of different vehicles that you have to use, personally I would prefer to just fly the arwing with maybe one landmaster level, I understand that they were trying to keep things fresh with the new vehicles but none of them are quite as fun to pilot as the arwing. It's not a major criticism though and I am enjoying the game very much. Starfox Zero is unlikely to win the series any new fans but anyone who enjoyed Starfox on the SNES or Lylat Wars on the N64 should definitely buy this!

I loved Star Fox back on the original SNES and through the various iterations released thereafter. Star Fox Zero does not disappoint this old, nostalgic gamer. Granted the controls took some getting used to but it's not nearly as bad as some of the poor reviews are saying on Amazon, certainly isn't unplayable. Little bit of patience and practice in the training grounds (which is why they're there in the first place) and you'll be destroying Andross's minions in no time. The graphics are colourful and very pretty, don't think I've ever seen Corneria in such vibrancy, big thumbs up from me and frankly Nintendo remembering it's roots of good, fun, and original gameplay, stories and characters.Seriously,if people think this is hard then they've clearly never played SNES Star Fox before.

My husband bought this for me (from Amazon) - been so excited about this coming out after having played the SNES and N64 games all those years ago! At first I thought nothing much had changed since Lylat Wars and found hearing the same catch phrases annoying, then, when I got to the first boss, I had to really work hard with the new controls (did some of the training, my tip is to remember that you still need to 'direct' your vehicle with the controller at the same time as using the motion controls for fine aiming) - after completing the first level I was hooked & love the new vehicles & getting the feel for how they work.I'm finding the missions really exciting & haven't had this much fun with a wii u game since Hyrule Warriors!

Finished the game yesterday and I must admit that I really enjoyed it... I seriously do not understand why people complain about the controls it took me about 5 minutes to master them. I believe most of the critics who blasted the game have not bothered playing games on wii u and they are not accustomed to its motion control system. Dont let reviewers influence your judgement- just be patient during the first 5-10 minutes and everything will work out fine. My only complaint is that the game is quite short and kind of east to finish otherwise its a true nintendo title!

Do not listen to lazy reviewers. The gameplay is solid, levels are well designed, the story, characters and worlds are all very Starfox with brilliant boss battles designed by Platinum Games. The controls allow you to move via any vector while simultaneously aiming and shooting in any other direction. Initially the controls are demanding and require your brain to focus on two tasks, however this can lead to incredibly rewarding and complex gameplay. There's also co operative if you and a friend would like to play the role of a pilot and gunner.

This is what games used to be, challenging, pure fun, no hand holding, no scripted events, no slow talking parts, pure gameplay like Nintendo knows how to do.Graphics are really good, I don't know what people were complaining about graphics, I have the xbox one X and ps4 pro and I think graphics are great, crisp, colourful, clean.I wish all the missions were open levels, I don't like on rails parts.Controls are difficult to master, but once you get used to it, the possibilities open up.

Played it and was going to sell it on e bay and then i thought i would give it another try. There is nothing like this on other consoles and if u get used to the controls well its a keeper. Its hard to nail em down but practice doing same level over and over until it clicks.. its worth it in the end. Splatoon is also much better experience if you can adopt to motion controls. Infact im looking foward to splatoon 2 more than titanfall 2. lol serious.

24.4.2016

The much complained about controls are fine. Immersive even, giving you a different perspective on the action and making you feel more involved. It is possible to get some way into the game without too much frustration or challenge and it despite reports to the contrary, I think the graphics are pretty good too. I would like to have seen a mutliplayer battle option, but what you get is a great action game, well worth your time.
