Isn't time travel fun? So much media for it all ranging from cars to phone boxes and more, yet none of them can quite compare to the simple time travel of playing an old video game from your childhood.A compilation pack of old games on the X-Box 360, I thought it would never happen due to the Market there is online. But this was a nice surprise to learn of. So on with the review:This is a compilaton package of 49 games, the majority of them from the Mega Drive which was released back in the early 90s and eventually retired in the mid 90s just before the Sega Saturn was released.Back in the early the SNES and the Mega Drive were the two consoles that survived and kept on surviving despite the competition from competitors who promised advanced gaming, they soon disappeared. And Mario and Sonic were the icons of the time. Now it's 2009, the Playstation One has come and gone after a successful run, the Nintendo 64 and Gamecube had their time, Sega no longer develop consoles, with the Dreamcast's short life almost ten years ago. The PS2 is nearing it's lifespan after a long run and the Nintendo Wii, the X-Box 360 and the PS3 are the main consoles on the market with the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP being the top handhelds at this time, with the DS still on top.Gaming has come a long way since the Mega Drive and SNES days. There have been compilation packs before on the PS2, first X-Box and the Gamecube. This pack contains most of the games that appeared on the Mega Collection and Mega Collection Plus with a few differences. The list above should give an idea of what's on the disc.So I'll just explain details:The menu is done in an old Mark One Mega Drive style with the games themselves shown as carts. There's information on the games, cart and box artwork, extras like a few games to unlock and the ever useless interviews - they could have fitted more games on the disc if they had left out the interviews. The menu music is drab, but that's to be expected. Each game has an option menu that can be accessed with the 'Select' button once you start a game, most just video, audio and control schemes. It's recommended to consider having the ABC control mode on with most of the games, helps a lot. There is a smoothing feature meant for HD TV's, but to be honest from what I've heard it doesn't really help all that much with a lot of the games just looking ugly from it.The sound is as crisp and clear as ever and each game still retains the cheats and glitches as they used to have. The achievements are easy enough to get, a couple might be challenging, for example complete Mean Bean Machine, but a challenge is always good. This also marks the first time that the Streets of Rage games and Shining In The Darkness and Shining Force 1 and 2 have appeared in a Sega compilation pack outside of Japan, which makes a change since Sonic Gems never had the Streets of Rage games when it was released outside of Japan. Now for younger gamers, don't go expecting these games to be remakes with super fancy graphics, these are all emulated and look just as they did back in the 90s. Also you may find something that's not common in more modern games - a real challenge. The downsides however are: There is no Sonic3 & Knuckles lock on feature like with previous compilation packs, that was sadly not added in. Also several games which would have been nice to see - Gunster Heroes, Ranger X, The Thunderforce games from 1 to 4, Afterburner and any other Sega published or created games are sadly missing. But you do get several role play games, a hefty dose of Sonic, all three Streets of Rage, all four pre-online Phantasy star games, the first having been released on the Master System, Shining Force 1 and 2 and Shining in the Darkness as well as others.Maybe a second pack will be made, it would be great to see if Shining Force 3 finally gets a translation and a full release for the first time ever outside of Japan, Gunster Heroes and the Thunderforce games would be great to see on a second pack as well as Sonic CD and Sonic3 & Knuckles lock on feature. So is this worth getting? Yes and no. Yes if you remember the days when you were a kid or a teen playing on the old Mega Drive, the arcades and the Master System. If you hunger to go back in time with an old classic from your childhood days playing those machines, then this is a must buy. 49 games for under £30, that's quite the deal when you consider how much they would cost seperately on the online 360 market place and the Wii Virtual Console. No if you think graphics is the by all and end all of games, that anything that actually challenges you is too intimidating. Not every game is hard, but some have a very unforgiving challenge that really does test you. Also if you were hoping for the lock on feature from previous packs on the PS2 and so on, you won't find it in this pack sadly.A good pack, could have been more, but as it is it's a beaut and it really is wonderful to finally see the Streets of Rage games again after so long as well as more RPG's.So if you're up for a little time travel and regression, this could just be what you're looking for. It's not perfect, but it's a definite worth while buy as long as you buy it just for the fun factor and not the graphics factor.Who needs to go 88 MPH when you can just use a controller? Here's hoping there's a possible second pack with even more classic gems. Fingers crossed. To the time machine!

This, believe it or not, is not the first mega drive compilation, it is not the second or even the third. This is the fourth (two on PS2 and one on PSP). So, is another compilation a bad thing? Well no, not really, this does include some new titles.Highlights: Well, lets be honest, the chance to play ANY sonic game ever created for the mega drive (including sonic spinball, sonic 3D and Sonic and Knuckles) is a REAL thrill. They were fast, featured some great tunes and had some real exciting levels (for me Ice cap zone in Sonic 3 will remain a favourite). All the steets of rage games and all the golden axe games are on this too. This means that there are some top quality two player fighting titles which will really pull you back time and time again. Then of course there are the phantasy star games (1,2,3 and 4 which were some of the best RPGs on mega drive) and shining force, Ecco the dolphin 1 and 2 and others.Thankfully, sega learnt its lesson in the first compilation and as a result, graphics and gameplay have been left well alone however, one welcome change is the ability to save your game ANYWHERE and at ANYTIME.Some games that probably won't appeal as much are E-swat (a scrolling shooter), fatal labyrinth (mazes with lots of enemies) and alien storm was surprisingly poor when playing it recently especially when compared to the other games. So why buy this? This basically contains some of the best games of an era, it is easily packed with hundreds of hours play and has more two player games than an arcade. None of it has been tampered with and it contains some extras (although some will notice that all the extras are the same as those in the PSP and PS2 version of the compilation, a similar game with less titles). The achievements are dead easy to get including obtain a chaos emerald in Sonic 1 and speaking to another dolphin in Ecco so if you're after achievements its great. However, if you brought the last compilation, and you had a mega drive-do you really want or need this. THERE IS NO ONLINE PLAY! Don't ask me why, but they never bothered to include it. Anyway, that pretty much sums up the game so go out and make your own decision.

So, how about it? 40 Megadrive games, two Master System games and seven Arcade games to indulge your retrogaming needs? If that sounds good to you, and even more so if you haven't downloaded any of the Sega Classics on LiveArcade, then this collection will definitely be something you'd want in your library. And they're quite the classics too, ranging from a wide variety of platformers -- more notably the Sonic series (sadly with the inclusion of Sonic Spinball, though) -- not to mention various beat 'em ups and RPGs, strategy and not. All three Streets of Rages, all the Shining Force games INCLUDING Shining in the Darkness, all the Golden Axe games... they're here. So, what's the downside? Well, there's a few. They're minor ones, true, but I thought I'd mention them all the same. The biggest one is definitely the fact that the Sonic & Knuckles lock on technology isn't included, so don't sell that Sonic Mega Collection just yet. Another thing is that, at least on the Xbox360 version, you have to select your storage medium all the time -- when you start a game, when you exit a game and when you start the collection itself (which is the only time that should have counted.) It's no big deal, but it makes the whole testing run once you buy this collection more than a bit clunky. The rest of them are basically minor niggles: The boss character Ash still isn't included in the European version of Streets of Rage 3. And, like most of the other collections I have, there are a few games I simply don't care much for; like Columns, Sonic Spinball and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean machine. Even Super Thunder Blade is kind of a lame conversion as arcade conversions go, and would better have been replaced with Afterburner II.But honestly, given the price most retrocollections go by, that's barely even a complaint. What this all boils down to is that for your money, there's a hell of a lot of excellent games in here. It's a honorable nod in the direction of the people who have ever owned a Sega Megadrive, and a chance for those who didn't to see just how the little machine used to be a strong competitor to the technically superior Super Nintendo.

When i was a kid you where either SEGA or NINTENDO, i was very much aSEGA MEGA DRIVE kid. Some of my fondest memory's are playing Sonic The Hedgehog & Road Rash on a Christmas morning. I'd loved my Mega Drive, I've owned both PlayStation one & two, Sega Dreamcast and now currently have a Xbox 360. I would defiantly call myself a gamer and it all started with my awesome Sega Mega Drive. I feel the need at this point to say I'm not a geek, I'm married to a hot Asian girl and i love beer. But simulated violence is simply unbeatable.I'm 27 so I'm old enough to remember to start of Sega then sadly the end of the consoles. In my opinion Sega have made some of the most memorable game. The Sonic games can be enjoyed by anyone, I never knew that Sega made a Golden Axe 3 and I've never heard anything about Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom or Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium. I loved Phantasy Star even tho I was never any good at it. So I'm sold already & there's 37 games I haven't mentioned.Out of the game there are a handful I haven't heard of so I'm a little excited about them, but then there's the big Titles in the list witch is making me want to do a victory dance around the room.If there are kids looking at these game & thinking there just old n rubbish then they would be sadly mistaken. You owe it to yourself to play these masterpieces, they dont make games like these anymore. The new consoles rely on graphics when the oldskool consoles relayed purely on gameplay & last ability.Sadly there are some titles which are missing from SEGA Mega Drive: Ultimate Collection I would have loved to see Road Rash, Strider, Desert, jungle & Urban strike. Oh well. Some of these game are rare & pretty much imposable to get anywhere else.I know its pointless writing a review for a game which hasent even come yet but having played & owned 80% of these classic titles I will & I can ha ha..I'm realy exicited about playing Sega's Ultimate Collection again, I hope some of you are too.

I'll get my complaints out of the way first - there's no "lock-on" Sonic games included, so you can't play though Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Also, where's Revenge of Shinobi? As it calls itself "Ultimate", that's a bit of an oversight. Also, there's absolutely no online features. I appreciate that it would be difficult, but the same company has already released online versions of Sonic, Sonic 2 and Streets of Rage 2, so why leave those out of this collection..?With that said, I love this collection. The Mega Drive has always lived up to my rose tinted nostalgic memories - and I finally have a copy of Streets of Rage 3 thanks to this disc. Over 40 games for £25 is more generous than most retro collections, and it includes the arcade version of Altered Beast which is a nice bonus. The most enjoyable entries in the collection are Streets of Rage 2/3 and the Sonic games. An obvious statement, but the Mega Drive's library never did live up to those beacons of 16 bit glory. Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is also excellent (similar to Puzzle Fighter), and Shinobi 3 is great. Comix Zone is a very unique beat em up that's good, but makes life too hard to really enjoy it.I can't imagine anyone younger than 18 really caring about the games though - nostalgia's a large part of what makes them good. With the exception of Mean Bean Machine and Sonic, most of the game mechanics are showing their age - Vectorman and Comix Zone are guilty of having no continue system and being too restrictive with lives, and whilst Kid Chameleon is still a good platformer, it's clearly dated.

I still remember the day my parents bought a sega mega drive, hours of fun and soo many good games. When i saw this and its games list including the likes of Golden axe and streets of rage i knew i had to get this. There are a lot of games in this collection and so it will keep you entertained for ages. Most of the classics are fun to play again even when you finish it. They may be old games but they are still great to play, and have good nostalgia value. The gameplay is smooth and you can earn achievements, though not in all games. One massive bonus is the save game function, no more sitting all day trying to complete a game getting to the last boss and your mum turning the console off for dinner and you losing all your work.As for graphics these are old games so don't expect miracles. They do seem a little better than the original games, i have HD and i can't see that much of an improvement when i play on non HD. At the end of the day these weren't made for the graphics they were made to be fun and playable, and they still are.Overall i think it is well worth the money and gives hours of fun. There are a few flaws hence only four stars, the achievements could have been better and why is there no online mode!! You can't beat the price though.

This game is sharper than a cyber razor cut! This is the first game i bought for my xbox 360 and is still the only game i own because im getting so much play value out of it! Its a bargain too-i remember back in the day some of these games could cost between 40 and 60 quid to own! I cant recommend this enough not only are there 40 mega drive games there are bonus unlockable arcade games too like the arcade version of altered beast. My favorite games in this set are Sonic 1 2 3 and Knuckles,Dynamite Headdy,Streets Of Rage 1 2 3 Golden Axe 1 2 3,Kid Chameleon and many more. You can save the game at any point which is a nice addition for those tougher games like the awesome Dynamite Headdy! The games have borders around the screen which can be distracting but can be formatted to suit whatever size telly your watching. You can also smooth the graphics for each games to give them a great HD look. Seriously, for a person who grew up in the brilliant '16Bit Wars' era this is a must have! (after 17 years i still cant finish Sonic Spinball!)

If, like me, you are old enough to remember the many hours of joy that the sega Megadrive gave to a generation, then this nostalgia fest will be getting you very excited. If your first memories of gaming start around the PS1 or 2, then you will wonder what all the fuss is about. Its a great range of games- having all 3 of the streets of rage games alone makes this an essential purchase. I am also delighted to see Sonic Spinball in the mix.My only issue is that, I dont think you can call it the 'Ultimate' collection, when certain important games are not represented. Earthworm Jim is AWOL, no sign of Micro machines either, and it would also have been nice to have had the disney licensed game of 'Aladdin',which really was a cracking little platform game. That being said, there is more than enough here to make our trip down memory lane a fun ride. When can we expect every game ever released on the ZX spectrum on a disk? ;-D

The SEGA Mega Drive: Ultimate Collection is an entertaining compilation of some of the 90's Consoles greatest hit's.At the start you have 40 Games to play and 9 Unlockable games for the Sega Master System available through completing various achievements. The games are hit and miss depending on which ones you enjoyed back in the day.It would of been nice to see some additional games on this collection which are missing such as Lemmings, Cool Spot and also some of the Disney Video Games but I guess this has more to do with licensing than anything else. The Collection is worth purchasing as it is a great nostalgic experience to go back down memory lane and play some of these classic games.Themuseum feature featuring Interviews and Information about the games and their history is also a nice touch to the collection.

As you get older every once in a while something comes along that somehow, just for a second, truly transports you in time. I loved my Mega Drive it was a time when things were just infinitly easier. So imagine the broad smile that appeared on my face when i first heard in almost twenty years, the opening music to the fantastic Streets Of Rage.(1, 2 & 3 are on this! But beware of those fat guys that breathe fire!) :) Trust me, this is a brilliant buy. Its the cheapest time machine Ive ever bought. Get ready to feel the way you used to feel on a Saturday morning. When the weekends were longer and the sun was shining.(As an added bonus its amazing when afterwards you turn on COD.Imagine just what we will be able to achieve in the next twenty years) Enjoy!

brilliant bit of nostalgia containing one of the most important and greatest games ever the original sonic! used to love the megadrive back in the day and some of the classic games are still good fun to play. only gripe is my favourite megadrive games are sonic 1, ea hockey, road rash, super monaco gp, streets of rage, truxton of which only 2 are on here. i know why coz EA games made 2 of them so maybe hard to get the license for them. its a shame though coz to have all 6 of these games would have been brilliant! (im not that annoyed though coz already got an original megadrive 2 with these 6 games, just a pain setting it all up every time i want a spin on them, plus you dont have the save option that the xbox version has)

Speaking as someone who grew up owning an old Saga Mega Drive - or Genesis, depending on where you're from. I can say that these old games are as fun now as they were then, so I recommend these to anybody who appreciates old-style games, such as the original Sonic the Hedgehog, Golden Axe and Streets of Rage. And yes, I will admit that they may not appeal to kids of today, who know only the Xbox One and the latest Play Station with advanced graphics that are so real its hard to determine if its film with real actors or CGI. Where despite the fact that I'm not the gamer I used to be due to my declining eye-sight and general poor heal,I purchased a copy and feel in love with these classic all over again.

For me personally this game is a total gem, containing all the games released in the ps2 and psp mega drive collections along with many extras, including the excellent shining force games, the full sonic collection and the classic streets of rage series, all of which are recreated perfectly, with the control system tweeked so you can changed the standard padd configuration over to the original megadrive settings, as well as keeping all the original games cheats and tricks for those who remember them :PThe game itself contains over 40 games, covering all the best that sega developed back in their heyday if you were ever a fan of the megadrive, this should be a must for you as well.

7.4.2014

Like so many of us, I had a sega when I was a kid and games like Sonic, Golden Axe, Alien Storm and Echo the Dolphin were highly entertaining. I think my favourite had to be Sonic though! As technology changes so rapidly and games get discontinued, I really missed these and was so amazed to find the Xbox 360 version and it doesn't disappoint - this has got all the old games we knew and loved and they aren't shortened versions - you get them from start to finish on one brilliant disc of fun packed nostalgia! If you are a fan of the old games, but in doubt about purchasing this, don't be - it really is highly recommended!

I've only played a few games so far, but it does take me back to the 80s/90s.I was surprised when reading some of the 1 star reviews, at comments such as outdated graphics, with one going as far as to say that these graphics are straight out of the 80s - of course they are, which is the whole point of this disc. Many games for a fraction of the cost of buying them separately.I did have a problem with the Sonic games, where they would go into demo mode when you started to them, but have read that this is fixed by pressing the start button 3 or 4 times and ignoring the on-screen start option. I've not tested it though.
