==Introduction==The arrival of Xbox Kinect in November 2010 was eagerly anticipated by gamesplayers around the globe. One of the initial release titles which most people were interested to play was Kinect Sports, purely out of curiosity to see how it matched up to the highly acclaimed and extremely addictive Wii Sports. If Kinect Sports was to prove a hit then it would need to match Wii Sports on enjoyment but surpass it in terms of gameplay.Kinect Sports allows you to participate in six disciplines, namely football, table tennis, beach volleyball, bowling, boxing and track and field which itself is broken down into five events. The first thing to note here is that Kinect Sports contains two events which have also appeared in Wii Sports plus the table tennis could also be compared to Wii Sports tennis so direct comparisons could be made between the two games. As with all Kinect games, control of the on-screen action is by player movements so if you want to hold all of the world records and beat your friend's scores, you are going to have to be fairly mobile.==Football==The football game is a nice introduction into Kinect Sports and is perfect for a warm up as it is not that physically demanding. You are required to swing your leg to pass the ball to a team mate and then shoot on goal. Occasionally when a high ball is played, you will need to head the ball by bending your back and thrusting your head forward. When defending, you just need to move either left or right to attempt to block the ball or when the opposition shoot you will need to throw your arms in a particular direction as well as jumping or crouching down for a low shot. You will not need to dive around so this game is perfectly safe for two players playing side by side.==Table Tennis==Table tennis is one of the best events in Kinect Sports. To begin you need to toss the ball high into the air with one hand and hit the ball on its way down with the other. It is easy enough to hit the ball but timing is of the essence as if you catch it sweet then it makes it harder for your opponent to return the ball. Whereas with Wii Sports tennis you can stand in one position and swing your arm at the right time, with Kinect Sports you will actually need to move your feet in order to get across from one side of the table to the other as well as moving forwards and backwards. Although this is still not really a calorie burning event, you will start to get a sweat on during long rallies.==Beach Volleyball==Beach volleyball is an interesting addition to Kinect Sports. It can be played as a 1 v 1 game or you can team up with a friend to take on the opposition. Due to the fast action in this event, guides are displayed above your player on the screen when you need to act. These guides will tell you what type of move you need to do, whether you need to set the ball or smash it over the net. This concept works fairly well and even if you are not familiar with the sport, it is still a very enjoyable event to play.==Bowling==Bowling was always a fun and easy game to play in Wii Sports and the Kinect Sports offering is no different. The gameplay here is pretty much identical to Wii Sports but with slightly more polished graphics. By moving from your starting position your on-screen bowler will move with you, allowing you to bowl down one side of the alley if you need to. Learning how to bowl a straight ball does take a bit of practise and turning of your technique but this will happen fairly quickly,==Boxing ==Boxing in Kinect Sports is one of the most tiring video game events. Footwork is not so important in this event but throwing punches for 90 seconds each round really does take it out of you, both in terms of stamina and strength in your arms. All three punch styles are represented perfectly. The jab is the simplest punch to throw just by pushing your arm forward, the hook is accomplished by swinging your arm round from the side and back in to the middle while the uppercut involves punching upwards. If this game is to be played by two players, ensure that you have enough room so that nobody gets hurt with a stray punch.==Track and Field==The athletics events are really where you will get the best cardio workout. The events have been well positioned within the the track and field section so that you will get a breather in the middle rather than doing all the running events one after the other. First up is the 100m dash. To move your athlete you have to run on the spot, the higher you get your knees, the faster he will run. You can start the race from a standing position but to get the fastest start it is best to crouch slightly and lean forward. At the end of the race, lean forward again to make your athlete reach for the line. If you are not out of breath after this event then either you are in top condition or you have not given it 100%.Next up is the javelin which involves a short run using the same technique as before and then launching the javelin as far as you can. When running, you need to have your throwing arm straight out behind you, just as you would do if you were actually holding the javelin. This is a fun event, especially if you can clear the main javelin field and land it on the track or in the discuss pen.Next up is the long jump. This is very similar to the javelin where you are required to do a short run to get your speed up but then jump before the board in order to launch your athlete. There is no need to land the athlete as this will be automatic. It takes a lot of practise to ensure you are jumping at the right time but again, this is a fun event to play. The discus event gives you the chance to take a breather. No running is required for this event. To launch the discuss you just need to swing your arm from behind you at the fastest speed possible to launch the discuss. This is probably the easiest track and field event to play as it requires very little technique. Finally it's on to the hurdles which is quite a tricky event to end with. By this stage you will probably have a serious sweat after working hard through the events and the hurdles combines the speed of the 100m with the timing of the long jump. If you mistime a jump you will either clip the hurdle or run straight through it, causing you to slow down or even stop, If you are to get a good time on the hurdles then you need to really concentrate hard as well as putting in all your physical effort. Using the same start and finish techniques as the 100m will shave considerable amounts off your time.==Online play==Where Kinect Sports has a distinct advantage over Wii sports is that all these events can be played online. This adds an extra dimension to the game as the computer opponents will only provide competition upto a certain standard. Once you have beaten these you will need the extra challenges of online play in order to keep the game fun. You can elect to either play against a friend or a random person. If you choose a random person you can disable voice chat as a safety measure.==Mini Games==If you do not feel like playing the full games, a series of mini games for each event are available, each with their own leaderboards so you can again challenge your online friends in these games.==Verdict==Overall Kinect Sports is a great way to showcase the capabilities of the Kinect sensor. The game is fun to play and will appeal to gamers of all ages. The game comes into its own when played with friends but because of the excellent online features, these friends now, no longer need to be in the same room as you. To get the best out of the game, ensure there is about 8ft of space between the sensor and the player and approximately 5ft to either side to allow for movement.

This is our third Kinect game and it is bags of fun. Our family ranges in age from 4 - 39 and we all get something out of this. While some events are more difficult for the youngest in our family, even he can enjoy everything (volleyball and table tennis are a little tricky for him right now though). The party mode is great fun and the kinect holds up well with all the events. I wasn't expecting to like bowling after some of the reviews I'd read, but it is actually very good. We have the Wii too, and it compares well. Different, but just as good in my opinion. It's easier for the younger ones too since there are no buttons to press.Football is better than expected as well (it's our 7 year old son's favourite event),but make sure you have plenty of room or you will be kicking each other in two player mode! Sure it's dumbed down a little, but what else would you expect? As with all the events, they're simple to get into, but take quite a bit of patience to master. There are some fun mini-games too, which add a little to the depth and replay. It's definitely more of a multi-player experience, but you can play on your own. The replays are always fun to watch too...It's not a relaxing game, so expect to be moving about a lot, and in the case of athletics, you'll be left breathless by the last event. I actually play first thing in the morning with my sons before school as a form of exercise for me, and pure fun for them. There are a few minor niggles, such as the amount of time it takes to get into an event. It's all good fun, and very well presented, but once you've seen all the fancy intros and menus a few times, you just want to get to the actual games. I also feel more games should use the Dance Central menu system, which is faster, very cool and also more fun (you move your arm up and down to select and swipe from right to left or left to right to confirm your selection). As with all Kinect games, you need plenty of room. The sensor seems to work much better in events where you have to throw, for example, when it can see all of you even with your arms up in the air.If you consider this is a launch game, I can't wait to see what the future holds for the Kinect. The Wii started the whole evolution, and this is definitely taking it to the next level (and I've owned just about every games console and computer since the zx81 - that's how old I am).Highly recommended. As long as you don't expect a massively deep game, this will give you hours of fun.

Sports games seem to be the way to show off Motion Controllers; Wii Sports was the perfect introduction to the Wii, Sports Champions showed what Move was capable of. Likewise, Rare's Kinect Sports arrives to show Kinect owners what their hardware can really do.Kinect Sports contains 6 sports; Volleyball, Bowling, Football, Table Tennis, Boxing and Track and Field (which itself contains a further 5 events). This is bolstered by mini-game versions of these sports. The question everyone wants to know is 'Is this better than Wii Sports/Sports Champions?'. The short answer is; yes. The game makes full use of Kinect and its incredibly easy to use. Menus are easy to navigate, you can use Xbox Live Avatars for players and there are some neat touches that put this ahead of Wii Sports like the inclusion of licensed music when you win an event. Hearing Queen's 'We Are The Champions' blasting out of your speaker while you watch your latest replay can be very satisfying. Kinect Sports even saves a video replay of your antics while playing, which you can choose to delete out of embarrassment or upload to Kinect Share and stick it on Youtube for further embarrassment! All the sports are well thought out to make use of the hardware, though Football is an interesting choice for inclusion as it's a hard game to implement with motion controls. Rare have tried hard to bring the game to life with Kinect, in fact its the part they've spent the most time on, and it does work to an extent. Obviously it's a dumbed down version of the sport but it's fun. All the sports are easy to use though and work just as you'd expect. There is very little lag in the game as a whole and quite a challenge to beat the leaderboards on the harder difficulty settings. To give you an idea of how easy it is to use, my 6 year old found it easy to navigate the menus and play the games. She enjoyed most of the games though games like Javelin require quite a bit of accuracy in throwing and co-ordination.Kinect Sports does what it sets out to do and shows off Kinect but, beyond that, it's great fun and entertaining for the whole family.

This is the first Kinect game I have bought Adventures aside. So have little to compare to but will give you my own and my 5yo Daughters view.I nor my Daughter are "Sport" fans but knowing bowling was aboard this disk and being a fan of wii's bowling I had to invest. We started with the running, javelin, discus, long jump and hurdles. Lots of fun, very responsive and the games themselves are what they are. My only advice would be to make sure you get those knees up. The game seems to monitor that area more so than feet leaving the floor.I tried a little boxing, again. Very responsive (more so than the Wii ever was) and again, the game is what it is.Finally we tried the Bowling, and this is where we have spent the rest of the day! There are more games on ie, table tennis and Football but we found the bowling so satisfying we could not tear ourselves away.I will report back on the remainder but imagine them to be the of the same quality. To summarise; think of this compilation as a taster, a way to experience a bit of everything to great effect. You will not find much in the way of great depth like training up your avatar nor much in the way of customisation but it really doesn't matter that much. If you love Boxing rest assured in good time a more comprehensive dedicated game will emerge. Think Fight Night Kinect. Like wise with the other game modes i'm sure dedicated games will appear. This is simply simple. For ALL to enjoy, more so for the light weights like myself.A Bloody Good game that you will revisit time and time again..Finally I think its worth mentioning the Videos. They truly are fantastic! we had a great time watching back the snips! These are what topped it off as a 5 star product! Very funny..

I bought this game shortly after getting Kinect after reading a few reviews. To be honest having read numerous reports talking about lag I was slightly apprehensive when I loaded it up. It's fair to say I was blown away by this. If there is any lag it's minimal and you certainly don't notice any lag when you're in the heat of the action. The choice of sports is great and surprisingly the football works really well. I wasn't entirely sure how that one would work but it's great fun. Boxing is also good fun although being constantly TKO'd by your five year old son every time is not! The track and field is surprisingly varied and the events are all very enjoyable.I particularly like the fact that your avatar whenever it's on screen literally does everything you do. If you want to pull off some Usain Bolt poses before the 100m you can and if you want to taunt your opponent after you've pummelled him to the canvas then it's all possible. It's a small but nice touch. I'm still amazed that Kinect can track your movements in such a way that you can play top spin and slice shots in table tennis and even put spin on the ball when bowling. The highlights after the game are genius and always have us in histerics when you see yourself pulling off some ridiculous moves! If I have a criticism then it is probably that the bowling is a little too easy although trust me this is a minor gripe.A lot of the reviews have talked about the space you need and yes you do need quite a bit of space but the on screen prompts work well to warn you if you need to re-adjust your position. This is great all round entertainment and for me this is Kinect at it's very best.If you've got Kinect then go and buy this, you won't be disappointed.

The fact that this game is a launch title speaks volumes about what you can expect from Kinect. We've had our Kinect since launch but this one had to stay out the way for Christmas, but everyone in the family was itching for a go and to be brutal I expected to be disappointed.Thank Goodness for misplaced pessimism!Started with bowling and frankly is that was all there was with this you would probably be more than happy. But then you have Table Tennis, Track and Field, Boxing, Football and Volley Ball.If there is an issue it is as always not with the game but with the Kinnect - that SPACE HUNGRY brute! We have a small playroom and one person gets just about enough room. The funny thing is you just start playing, enjoying it, then thinking how you can maybe convince the wife to lose, say, the bedroom, so you have a bigger area for the Kinnect. A lottery win maybe - then you could build a Kinnect Ready room.Frankly you WILL find a space for Kinect.Table Tennis is a fun but challenging one handed affair and very receptive. Track and Field is the fun one, and for the middle aged a real workout. Boxing certainly gets the heart rate up, and for the one player could do with a few 'levels' rather than one opponent. Volley Ball was great fun, but led to the wife taking out the ceiling lampshade - you don't need to jump THAT high, dear.Best of all for the blokes is Football, which actually is the least active of the group, but ultimately the most satisfying. The online play just takes it all to a better level.Well worth a pop to show you what that [...] bit of hardware can do.Now, where do we sleep IF the Kinect gets the main bedroom..............

I got this when i bought my kinect and i have to say of the 5 games i got its the one that gets played the most. The game is similar in it's fun themed sports style to Nintendo Wii's Sports resort game but its much better than that. The game has a number of core sports or 'main events' such as football, bowling, boxing, track & field etc. and it also has a series of mini games based on each of these. All the game modes are alot of fun, while not exactly simulation style or serious it is a while lot of fun. I'm 30 and i play alongside my 5 year old, my 3 year old, their 67 year old grandad and their 26 year old mother sometimes too and we all have a great laugh, the grandad of the family who is no gamer by the way really loves the game.At the end of an event the game shows you a video of you all playing the game recorded by the kinect itself which can be very funny. The core of the kinect's appeal and fun is the fact your body movements are recorded and put into the game and in Kinect sports there is good reward for doing things properly but it is forgiving enough for my 3 year old to play the bowling without and direct help and still get herself some strikes!Overall a top quality fun game and a great launch product for the kinect, i expect it wont be long too before the hardcore gamer or sports fan is being catered for with simulation style sports games too.If your gonna buy a kinect get this game with it, if you have a kinect but didnt buy Kinect sports yet then get it, it's the one kinect game you should have in your collection right now for some good old fashioned family fun.

I have played this game much more than any other Kinect game, and having already played it was the main reason for buying the Kinect system. My favourite part of the game has to be Party Play, where you divide into teams, adopting a comical character and take on your friends at quick versions of the games. The accompanying sound track really adds to the excitement of this mode of play too. Watching back the videos of you playing at the end also give some hilarious moments.Whilst the number of sports is not that huge, each has a number of ways that it can be played, although this has worked out as a negative in the past where I have been playing Party Play and not read the instructions, assuming it was the same rules as before (in this instance boxing - defend as many punches as possible or make as many punches as possible). In terms of space requirements I found this quite generous. I do not have a large living room, and as such I am only able to play Kinect Adventures in single player mode. With this game, although it says I am only just within the playable limit, I am able to play two player with no problems.I feel the mini games are much more fun than the more realistic ones, but perhaps this is me not quite having the right technique, i.e. when running you seem to go faster by lifting your knees up more, which is not the way I would play in real life.I would definitely recommend this game to anyone with a Kinect, whether a sports fan or not - there are a good variety of games depending on how much physical effort you want to put in.

I only have Wii sports to compare this with and it just makes it look very old and tired. Its the first propoer Kinect game I've purchased other than 'Adventures' which comes with the Kinect. If you want an additional game for the Kinect then you won't be disappointed. There are High's and Low's with it but on the whole its an excellent games because of the Kinect's use of the whole body rather than using controllers. My Highs and Lows are:Boxing - brilliant, punches follow your hand direction including upper cuts, jabs and basically anything you throw punchwise at your opponent. Online it is also great fun if you have a good connection. Mine is only 2mb so its playable but I'm sure it would be better with a faster connection. You will ache like hell after playing this.Table Tennis - slight lag, nothing you can't get used to and to some extent you have to predict the path of the ball. But I love it and you have to predict the flight of the ball in the real game anyway when the ball is hit hard. There are some brilliant players online who will make you want to give up.Volleyball - love it but watch the ceiling as you gotta jump to hit those smashes.Track and field - I like the running events. Not to keen on the throwing events but at least they are a rest.Bowling - since when is bowling a sport?! It's a big board game! My wife loves it. I've not played it.Anyway, just buy the game, its great fun and the online functionality adds another dimension.

I went to the Kinect launch event last night and picked up Dance Central, Fitness Evolved and Kinect Sports. Well the latter kind of goes without saying as all motion sensor tech seems to be released with a sports game. However this game is much differentThere are various sports included as well as mini games, you can play solo against the computer, online(with strangers or Live friends) or local with family and friendsI don't want to compare it to Wii Sports but that's what most people will be comparing it to and let's be honest, that's this games main rival. So, what does this offer over Wii Sports?1: It's really involving, particularly in my opinion the table tennis,it feels very real compared to hold a controller and pressing buttons2: The game has been built really well, from the well made replys to the good AI of computer opponents3: Fantastic online, i've played a few games with people online and it's really easy to do and fun4: Good for multiplayer, more so than the Wii as anyone can drop in and out as they please and you can all earn acheivements(if you have logins etc)What's bad?Well, mostly if you have more than 1 person playing at once and don't have a large living room you may find sometimes you'll go out of view of the camera or your arm will, plus its possible to easily hit the other personThat's about it really, its a solid, varied game that works well

Kinect Sports is a great game for kids and adults alike. The interface is simple to use and the selection of games should suit most people. The "mini game" mode allows you to dive right in and start playing quickly. "Party Mode" allow you to setup two teams which compete with each other in various games.Kinect Sports responds well to player movements. Just two small issues: (1) when running you really need to lift your knees in order to get the best response. (2) In games that require you to jump, such as the long jump and the hurdles I had to jump a little earlier that the visual cues suggested - but that could just be me and my couch potato physique.Bowling works well, and after I while I was able to finesse my throws with spin. The football target shooting is great fun and proved a big hit with both boys and girls. The boxing was a bit finicky and the football game lacklustre. If like me you are a sports fan and competitive but spend most of your time on the couch then beware! This game sucks you in quickly. I was exhausted on Christmas night and almost suffered a couple of sports related injuries :-)...In Summary - this game will make for a fun day or night. We had three generations playing on some occasions and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The video reviews at the end of each sequence were hilarious. Highly recommended.

Kinect Sports is probably the perfect game to show off what Kinect can do. My favorite sports are boxing which is great fun. I got ko'd by my 8 year old daughter first go. Bowling seems to get the whole family involved and gets very competitive. 'Soccer' has taken up more of my time though. Even kinect has it's limits and running the full length of a football field would be totally impracticle. The game is kind of split between defending, where you have to block your opponents passes. And attacking, where you have to pass and avoid being blocked. When you do get a shot on goal, with a bit of patience the ball will go where you kick. If you aim for the top right corner of the goal, the ball will go in that direction. I was extremely impressed with this and it works very well and also shows great potential for the future of kinect. Unfortunately, I have also kicked our dog in a few directions too playing 'soccer'. (he's fine though, honest). All the games here work very well and you don't need to read instructions or anything - just do the motions you would in the real world. The only dilemma is what if you already have wii sports? Well, wii sports is still great fun to play even now, but Kinect sports is the better game and if you already have kinect then you need kinect sports.

Bought this for my 10 year old son and took a couple of minutes to set up. Played the football against the x box and it maybe takes a couple of games to really get to grips with the passing and shooting. The instructions say that you need approx 6 ft of room but at times the distance was less than this and there were no problems with the sensor. The football is also quite good as a two player versus match.Again you need approx 8 ft space for the two players, however there were occasions when the distance was less and the sensor seemed fine. There were a couple of times when a player steps out if the "zone" but the sensor recognises this and you just need to step back a little bit.It is very easy to score goals and you start to think that you are xavi in no time. It is no FIFA but it's not trying to be. This is a really fun game. Tried the bowling which is much like Wii sports and also beach volley ball which is a nice touch.Table tennis was a little bit harder but with a little practice it will be great. If you check on x box live there is a free Kinect sports download with some extra mini games on them. I got two other games at the same time( Dance central, Kinectimals), if these are anywhere near as good as Kinect sports then they will be very good.

Kinect Sports is what Wii Sports should have been. Gone is the ability to play lying on the sofa or score a strike every time - instead high knees and activity are the order of the day. This game really isn't one for the unfit or the faint hearted - it does require physical exertion. The different sports involved are well complimented by a selection of mini-game with each. Free downloadable extras adds extra mini-games to each sport and mascots for the "party mode" which allows large groups of people to play in two separate teams. While you do need a reasonable amount of space for people to play in - something which people have previously complained about - I think this adds to the realism of the experience. If you weren't to run on the spot before throwing the javelin or be able to properly kick the ball, I think this would significantly detract from the game. The only element that lets this otherwise fantastic addition to the Kinect lineup is the lack of single-player appeal long term. While there is motivation to try and level up, the mini-game menus become quickly tiresome and the main events too difficult and not weighted strongly enough. I love this game, but to get the most out of it play it with friends and then it's nothing less than great fun.

Thought I would write this review as many people may be wondering if this is an out-the-box playable game. This is important if you have visitors (they are going to want to join in!) or if you have (like me) a 5 year old boy who really would get frustrated if it wasn't intuative. The answer is yes on both counts. My dad (65) took penalties (target practice) and was genuinely loving the challenge while my boy while I write this is playing beach volleyball.Another useful review said the football was 'dumbed down' but its excellent for children, the bowling is very good and as good as the real thing to be honest while the track and field is popular if you are small and its still easy to raiseyour knees (the secret of fast running!)I'm not sure about the table tennis to be honest as it may be the poorest offering but no big in the scheme of things and it is still very playable. If you have a kinect and have visitors regularly or Primary School aged children, this game is a must.Oh but it does get tiring for all quite quickly... He is sweating when he's finished, I'm sat down now after exhausting my self playing in goal at football and my dad is going to be on a ventilator for a week after his 56 target hits!!!!
