The Good:-Same great game. Gameplay improvements. Main three characters look quite good. The Bad:-Graphics don't always look that great. Some butchered music.Voice acting is average. So I love the Secret of Mana game from the Snes and have enjoyed many of the future games this one would spawn years later. But when I heard there was a HD remake coming to PS4, I did something I rarely do and that was to Pre-order it! But was it worth it?The game starts with our protagonist walking across a log bridge with some friends. He slips off and falls into the river below where he quickly finds the Mana Sword. And so begins his adventure. Along the way you will meet many new friends and villains, two of which will join your team. The game is very similar to the Legend of Zelda 2D series. The camera if above the characters heads only this time the world is 3D. The camera can’t be moved however and is locked above you at all times.I will admit that at first the new designs look a little odd in 3D but I did come to like them. The colours are bright and colourful much like the source material but the level of detail is surprising low for a PS4 game. While I understand they have tried to keep the cartoonish style it is no excuse for such low level of texture and detail. Dare I say it but it looks more like a PS3 game then PS4. I also can’t help but feel like some areas of the game felt a little small. I’m not sure how to explain it but in the original, the areas of the game felt quite large but here the characters seem too big at times. Might just be me thinking too much about it though! The sound is a little bit of a mix bag and probably the weakest area of the game overall. The sound effects are great and the music is pretty faithful to the original but some of the tracks have a sort of dub step feel to them which doesn’t always work. Some tracks are even recreated with a rock style which really doesn’t work at all and truth be told, the original Snes are vastly superior in almost everyway. However the game does have voice acting which is, well, it’s okay. While it is never too bad some voices just don’t match the situation. Also the character Sprite doesn’t have the voice I expected her to have. Although it might finally answer that the question of whether Sprite was male or female after all these years! (For those who don't know, that has been a point of argument of Mana fans for years!)But the area that really has been improved is the gameplay. You can now move in full 360 degrees rather then the 8 degrees of the Snes era. The menus are big and easy to read and navigate plus the subtitles are clear and sharp..So is the remake worth it? Well, overall yes with a small but. The game is still the same masterpiece at its core and some of the improvements are a welcome change but there are some areas that just feel weak or in some cases like the music, lesser the experience. The new controls help the game flow better but some areas really needed some more work. Mainly the sound area.Still the budget price is very welcome to see and the negatives never out way the positives. If you have never played this game or even if you have for that matter it’s still a great game even after 20 odd years.Gameplay:- 18/20Graphics:- 16/20Sound:-10/20Replay Value:- 18/20Value for money:- 15/20Total Score :- 77/100. A fantastic game but only a good remaster

At first I thought four stars. This game, I thought, should be judged purely on what it's trying to be: a nostalgia-fest for people my age. On that score it's almost perfect. Re-playing Secret of Mana with almost the same dialogue, with the same look and feel, graphical updates that understood what made the original look magical (it was the colours and the inventiveness, not the resolution) was all beautiful. Even better, getting to play with modern quality of controls was an absolute joy. The only trouble (hence the four stars) was whomever did the music is a hack. The songs are still great, because they aren't altered enough to completely redefine them, but in a pointless attempt to modernise them, they lose their magic. When people my age think of what they loved about SNES era JRPGs, we think about the music as much as anything. The music should have been raised from MIDI to proper instruments, and it would have been brilliant. And so a star is lost.So why the 5 stars? Because if we imagine we're not X-ennials for a moment, imagine being a kid who's never experienced this beautiful story, we should be glad it's been released all over again. It's a wonderful game. Like most oldies, it doesn't take ridiculously long to play, and it is well worth the experience. I keep coming back to a single word: magic, magic magic. That's because nothing says it better. This is a magical journey, a magical story, and a magical experience. Do yourself a favour and go along for the ride. Forget it's old. Forget it's somewhat dated. Enjoy it for what it is, and Secret of Mana would require quite the butchery indeed to not be 5 stars. This is one of the greatest games of all time. Let yourself get lost within its magic, and you'll carry the experience with you forever.

Excellent game, a quality remaster of the original. It's just as fun (and easy) to play 1 player or with up to 2 extra players, but be warned that you don't start the game with all 3 characters, you have to unlock them. If you want to do this quickly, you could use a spoilers free guide via Google (there are plenty) to get the characters within half an hour, but if you want to get them by yourself it'll take around an hour or two (depending on how familiar you are with rpgs and puzzle solving).Like most classic games from "back in the day", there's only vague guidance given rather than constant handholding and reminders of where to go. That's a bonus for me,but smaller children might get lost /might not realise where they need to go or how to get there. It's rewarding when you figure things out for yourself, but you can always find maps/walk throughs online if you really get stuck.Compelling characters and plot, beautiful soundtrack and the option to put the audio in Japanese (the original, less grating voices) whilst keeping the text and subtitles in English gets this 5 stars from me.

Great for those who love retro top down rpgs such as the original and Zelda etc. The graphics are nice and the addition of voices is cool - don't expect animation of the mouths though seems odd at first but then it's an old school rpg so it's acceptable and not a major issue. My only gripe so far is the combat it seems to go from simple and easy hit once and then either hit straight away for a weaker attack or allow your meter to charge to hit harder and there's even a charge attack if you hold after hitting. The problem comes later on whereby no matter if you have 100% or not you seem to miss every hit making even the simplest of creatures a painful fight. If they patched this to reduce the misses I think it would be less frustrating. Other than that it's a great game and worth your time. Plus it has couch coop.

Like it ,very good redone up to date graphics.Lot smoother looking in hd. But do prefer original, something about the original snes version, that cannot be replicated. Is what it is.Original .First very big game that ever came out on 16bit console.Snes at the time blew rest of consoles away with this game.It was an enormous game."Still is". Also first could play three characters at once.Unique. Very Magical game. If you have never played it before and like rpg games etc,get this. You will not regret it.Is very special game.Enter the world of mana, find the mana tree, with mana sword and help of friends with different abilities.Especially a flying dragon.Which is better way to travel in mana.First class.Of course theres Second class... cannon travel boom!Fun game and is a very Fun world.

I am adoring this remake. I played the original more times than I can count while growing up, and was so excited to hear it was being rereleased. I haven't been disappointed. Are some things different? Yes, it's not a straight port. But most of the changes I appreciate, such as additional conversations between the characters and beautiful graphics. The music is still enchanting. The addition of an auto-save is much appreciated. This was never a game to set the world on fire plot or characterwise, but it's just. Darned. Fun. Really recommended, for fans of the original and also definitely for younger players who never played the original and don't know what they're missing.

First played The Secret of Mana on the SNES 25 years ago and loved it, It got me hooked on RPG's.A couple of points on the re mastered version1. I like the way that Square Enix has given it a 3D look but kept the feel and gameplay of the original SNES version, And not made it true 3D as this game would not suit that style of gameplay.2. Allowing you to switch between the original soundtrack and the re mastered version. Some of the music I prefer the original to the modern versions.

Unsure as to why we have negative reviews here. This game is truly a magical experience and nostalgia trip. For me I turned the language to Japanese with English subtitles because the verbal translations just don’t cut it for me and Japanese is just more authentic. If you’re on the fence with this game then I’d take a punt and jump straight at it, you will not regret it.

Ah, partying like it was 1993, 25 years ago, jeez where did the time go!Excellent game, 3d is good but the 1.3gb day zero update is a bit much, though it probably helps to balance some of the bugs mentioned in the lesser scoring critical reviews elsewhere on the net.

It's good value for money at cheap price, if you want to play the original get a MIni SNES, i have both and each game is good in its own way, the old one is a classic, the new one is easier to play with voice acting & more cartoon look, if you like RPG games get this.

I had bought this on Super Nes when it first came out some 30 year's or so ago. Loved it then love it now. Brought back memories. Wonderful Fun Game to play. Graphics are old please be mind full off that but they have given it a fresher modern feel.

First game I ever played on Snez, really happy they remastered it for ps4. They don't sound right tho so I played it without voice over.( it has the option to turn that off) Even with the odd error it's still fun to play, make sure to save often.

Very nostalgic. That said some of the production is a bit rough around the edges. Animation is pretty basic and the transition from one screen to the next is clumsy. Feels like it is a missed opportunity to remake a classic

I loved the original and was disappointed when the initial reviews were poor, so waited for the price to drop. I think the bad reviews are too harsh, it's just a fun game in the good old style, nothing too serious.

Great classic to have along side my snes mini and my original secret of mana snes cartridge, although it had its glitches and problems at launch the patch that came seems to have sorted it them out.
