I ordered this hdd on 18 Oct and received it on 21 Oct with free delivery. Nice work, Amazon! The package also came as a very large box. Within this box was some bubble wrap and some beautiful brown paper to fill the gaps. Inside the bubble wrap was another box that contained some nice soft foam which housed the HDD. Judging from other reviews, Amazon seems to have taken the hint about the dodgy packaging and really wrap it up as safe as it can be.I installed the drive in the usual fashion and tried to install it with Windows. That's where the first problem hit: it bsod'd and then wouldn't boot again.'Fine' I thought. 'I'll just erase the CMOS' so I shorted the mobo with the jumper pins. That seemed to have gotten it. So I carried on going into the computer management and installing the hdd. I then started to transfer all my files over to the drive and it happened again. I got BSOD but this time, it was permanent. I erased the CMOS a million times. I swapped the SATA cables around. I booted with only the C: drive. Then with no drives at all (I have 2x1TB and 1x2TB). I unplugged my GPU but nothing would work. I tried everything but removing the RAM as I have a Noctua NH-D14 and I didn't fancy struggling to remove it unless it was my only option. But as things go, it was the only thing left that I could try. So I removed 1 stick of ram, booted the computer and alas! It booted. I switched it back off, put my stick back that I had removed and then put everything back together. I switched it back on and then began writing this review.I gave the product only 4 stars because I'm yet to begin transferring files again and I'm not sure if the BSOD was caused by the drive or bad luck. I'll report back if there's any problems.

I can only sing the praises for Seagate. These are great drives and survived the trek to Galway through the postal system. They are bare drives that went into and Icy Box Icy Box - Ib-3221stu-b - Aluminium Case For 2 X 3.5" Sata Hdd, Jbod System With Usb 2.0 Interface - Easyswap Technology. That's a dream come true.I formatted the drives individually through USB first in another case I'd purchased. One of them failed to format the first time but once it was connected directly to the unit all was well. They've since been loaded to the hilt and wiped and re-formatted and they are still as cool as cucumbers. My gripe goes to Amazon who seriously disappointed me with their packaging. The two drives were in their individual boxes with NO padding at all. Then they were in packing that is normally reserved for sending books AGAIN with NO padding at all. I know about Postal services and they way things are treated and it's usually not too kind.Up until now Amazon's record with me for electronics has been beyond reproach but this was a huge fail. Usually, the drive is in a box that's well padded and secured. Not this time. That I had a problem with one of them did not surprise me but I know enough and have people smarter than me to help that I thankfully didn't need to return the drives. So, great drives but poor packing and protection.

I've had this installed as my main hard drive with Windows installed on it, along with some non-critical data since mid April 2011. The drive was very quite, near silent even, with reasonable read/write times for its "green" status, i was rather content with it. However, two months later, the read/write times remain unchanged, but in regards to the drive still being silent.....not so much. The hard drive seems to have developed a somewhat faint, intermittent winding noise which can be heard even when the system is idle. Its' a little tricky to describe the sound, but imagine holding a thin piece of plastic against the rotating blades of a bedroom fan. Although the sound is quite faint,it can still be heard over my FIVE pc case fans! Whether this hard drive stands the test of time, only time will tell, but im very doubtful. It comes as no surprise that i probably wouldn't recommend this hard drive.**EDIT** Forgot to mention that this Drive scores 5.9 in Windows 7. Apparently that's the highest rating acheivable for a mechanical drive.**Update 09/06/15** Decided to up my rating from 2 stars to 5 stars, as this drive hasn't caused any issues in the 4 years that I've been using it as my main drive (touch wood!). Highly recommend this drive, and will probably stick with this brand when I upgrade my rig.

I wanted two large drives for a new NAS drive NETGEAR ReadyNAS Duo RND2000 v2 - NAS server and while enjoy to fiddle with PC gear I don't want to get into anything complex.Reading other reviews there was lots of comments about the version and whether the drives were grey imports and should come in manufactures packaging, but in the end it was a very good price and I went for it. However when it was received slight panic as they were in no boxes but were in anti-static bags and well bubble wrapped and no instructions. But Following the NAS drive guidance loaded them in and they work, SIMPLES. All I could ask for. Can't comment about transfer rates etc,who cares,IT might take a little longer to transfer than some others but does it itself while I am sleeping so no problem. They work and now all my data is backed up,streamed to lap tops and TV.Why is it not 5 star, well its a had drive it does the job end of.

What can I say? I have 4 of these in a RAID 1 configuration on my computer to keep my files safe. During a recent incident where my computer came along with me abroad my computer arrived to the destination but the tower was dented. Not only this but the front panel had come off and the extractor fan on the inside had come loose. Fearing the worse I taped up the front panel, put the fan back together and put it back in its slot and after checking all cable, etc. powered up my PC.After doing a scan I see that all the drives are fine and operating normally so I can safely say that these are built well.In addition to this experience I would also like to add that the drives are quiet and fairly swiftwhen I am copying over files from a portable drive to them.

This drive is great, I have had absolutely no problems with it whatsoever. However, I was very nervous when the drive arrived in the post, as the packaging was very poor. This drive was packaged identically to a book that you would buy from Amazon - in a cardboard sleeve. This is in no way acceptable, since this is a very sensitive piece of equipment. That being said, there was absolutely no damage to my drive, and I would buy another. I just think that the packaging needs to have more protection for the drive, as there is a high probability that some of these drives will be delivered to customers damaged, knowing how careless Royal Mail can be!

Dropped two of these into a NetGear ReadyNAS to upgrade Western Digital Black (1TB) and they are working very well so far.Benefits;1. They are running 4 to 5 degrees cooler than my previous drives2. They run very quiet with a lot less vibration compared to the previous drivesDrawbacks;Slower transfer speedsa. copying files from a Windows PC to the NAS using old drives did 22MB/second while these only do 17MB/secondb. copy files to Windows PC - old drives would do 30+MB/second and these only do 23MB/secondBut of course streaming media around the house you don't notice these differences, so happy with the devices.

I think there is not much new to say about Seagate 2TB. Easy to fix in the craddle with two screws I had from one of my previous PC dismatlings. Connecting with (also not supplied in the box) SATA2 cable to the MB and existing available free power cable form original PC supplied cabling. Formatting was easy and it started to work under my 64 bit Win7 OS in the minute.I decided to buy it for the reasonable price to raise my total disk memory (primary 500GB, extern 1TB) and I have choosen this working horse for price and raliability. My PC experience is long, but mostly superficial, enough for my 62 years.

So far so good. Product delivered, as expected from Amazon, well packed and on time, using free delivery option. Very good performance with Synology NAS enclosure. I bought single disk will buy another one with about few weeks delay to eliminate any batch issues, important for dual bay in RAID storage device. As a single drive works great, no issues what so ever, relatively quiet and cool disk. On fan setting at 'low', drive stays at about 40degC constant.Highly recommended for NAS, 5900RPMs gives you performance advantage over other drives with no drawback on power consumption, noise or heat emission.

Obviously you lose 10% of the 2TB when the HDD is formatted, the loss `seems` so much more as the HDDs get bigger and bigger !!!I installed this HDD and Windows Explorer failed to recognize it, although it do show as an `unconfigured` HDD in device manager. When I ran paragon hard disk manager there it was and it just needed `mounting` took a few minutes but now it shows in Windows explorer.I use windows Vista and I know there is a facilty within windows to do what paragon hrd disk manager did, just was easier as I had the program.Mentioned all this as some might think the HDD was faulty.Keith

BOUGHT THIS FROM ANOTHER SUPPLIER TODAY BUT I HAVE BEEN IMPRESSED WITH THE SPEED OF THE DRIVE SO FAR.I WAS A BIT UNCERTAIN WEATHER TO BUY THIS OR NOT DUE TO IT ONLY HAVING A 5900RPM SPEED BUT IT BEING A SATA 3 AND 64MB BUFFERMAKES UP FOR THINGS FOR SURE. IVE ALWAYS RATED SEAGATE DRIVES AS THE BEST AND NEVER HAD ONE FAIL ON MEAND WILL CONTINUE TO BUY THEM.IT ALSO HAS AN 8MS ACCESS TIME AND SOME 7200RPM DRIVES ARE HIGHER THAN THIS SO ITS PRETTY IMPRESSIVE HOW ITS BEEN TWEAKED.JUST GOOGLE THE DRIVE MODEL AND IT ALWAYS GETS DECENT WRITE UPS AND YOU CANT GO WRONG FOR THE PRICE OF AROUND £60.

3.1.2012

I caught wind of the HDD prices rising due to Thai floods just early enough to react and buy one of these drives. I wish I had bought more as it looks like prices could remain high well into 2012. This was the only drive I could find under 60 as I refused to spend more knowing most used to be less than 60. I wasn't expecting it to be as good as some of the popular Samsung and WD drives but I am pleasantly surprised. This drive has good read and write speeds, runs cool and is quiet. I cannot ask for much more really. So far it seems fine and has no issues running in a server I have.

So I got one of these in July 2011, really needed the space and this fit the bill marvelously. It's hardly like I need the space again now but thought I'd do a bit of futureproofing by getting one for crimbo. Then I notice it's had £45 whacked on it's price since then. #Ahem#The drive works fine, can be a *little* slow to start-up if I leave it out of use for a while but once it's running it does very well.I'm just not too taken with the price hike, hence the 4 stars. My advice, buy this 5 months ago!(Update: It's gone up another £20 since I wrote the above 13 days ago!)

10.2.2012

I have purchased 8 of these drives to date to install in 2 NAS drives. These were specifically chosen from the NAS manufacturers recommended list as the lowest priced choice. All have installed and formatted without any problems and are functioning as expected. The drives are all running at about 38 deg with low cooling fan speed applied in the NAS and are quiet in operation, almost just audible above ambient noise in a quiet room. not bad as all drives seem to work together. It is early days yet for reliability assessment, but I have no reason to not expect long service.

20.12.2012

I chose this after going through 2 Samsung Spinpoint F1 drives, both of which started making clunkety-clunk noises shortly after being put to use (both in the same 18 month period). Seagate and Western Digital have never failed me before and at the price point this was the cheaper, and also it promised its 'green' label so was supposed to be more energy efficient. All in all, the drive is still running well over a year later, and is quiet and powers down when not in use (my SSD hlds my OS partition, this is for data), so I can only assume it is pretty energy efficient.
