This is such a good game in so many areas, but it just needs those few extra tweaks to make it truly great. Graphics are lacking slightly if compared to equivalent football games such as Pro Evolution Soccer 4, for example, but the gameplay more than makes up for that. Ultimately, it is very playable, frustrating and addictive, all at once. Lineouts are suitably competitive, scrums can be won or lost based on timing, rucking and mauling are fairly straightforward once you get the basics, although the odd turnover is still possible. Penalty kicking is not so difficult to master, but kicking for touch in open play takes a bit more time and effort to get right and be warned, there always seems to be a winger waiting to catch the ball if you don't make the perfect touch. The main criticisms centre around a not-quite-there AI, particularly in defence, where I'm still struggling to perfect the strategy. However, the best policy seems to be to take your finger off the X "diving tackle" button and rely on using your analog stick and L2 button to get a player close enough to automatically make a bone-crunching tackle, which, incidentally, is tremendously satisfying. In 2 player mode, it's immensely enjoyable to collapse scrums or put hands into a ruck, just to annoy your superior opponent. Sometimes the ref doesn't even notice the offence, which is a nice touch and a great way of really rubbing salt into the wound.Another area that needs improving is the ease with which you can stray offside (it's just too easy to do if there is an unexpected turnover, even with the option to display the game line switched on), especially when the opposition never seem to offend to the same extent. Also, as another reviewer mentioned, there really need to be more penalties conceded by the opposition if you've been attacking over several phases and gaining ground all the time. There are some nice special moves, like hand-offs, shoulder charges, sidesteps and you can execute garryowens, grubber kicks, etc., but the reality is that your best bet is probably to keep recycling the ball to the backs from rucks, until you are close enough to either drop kick, pass to your most prolific try scorer for a weaving run though the defence, or have your scrum half pick up from the ruck from 5 metres out and sneak through for a try under the posts. Finally, what about some better celebrations in the event of a major tournament victory? I took Ireland to Grand Slam glory in the 6 Nations, with a series of impressive performances, and the commentators didn't even mention this feat, referrring merely to the fact that Ireland had won the championship. My players were naturally pleased, but didn't exactly do a lap of honour...

Good looking game, the graphics can be improved but overall there are very few glitches.I disagree with others comments that the computer never gives away penalties, within the first few games I played they had taken down the maul a few times, although they are never caught offside. They also can drop the ball from high kicks because I have scored from a computer mistake from my kick-off where they failed to catch the ball.Conversion kicking is not to hard either once you get used to it, although when I'm kicking penalties I don't have the same range as the computer seems to, mine often drop short if I try for a long goal kick.Drop goals are extremely difficult so I just ignore them and prefer7 points from a try.The tutorial at the start and basic training is helpful to get used to the controls, and the game is relatively simple once you do get used to them.Kicking for ground or touch is difficult at first and the computer seems to do it perfectly and get lucky bounces but like most aspects it becomes much simpler with a little practice.Lineouts are simple, it's fairly easy to win your own but more difficult but not impossible to win your opponents. Scrums are very difficult, both your own and your opponents, but they are possible. The commentary could be improved as it still seems broken and team names and scores seem very mechanically said, sometimes commentary falls behind play and they are still describing your try when you start kicking so they suddenly change mid sentence to describing the kick. The variety or tournaments gives you lots of playing time without playing 1-off matches constantly.Another good point I found is that the teams rating gives a indication to their ability but upsets can occur and lesser teams can seem to give you a harder match than better rated ones. The player create has lots of options but I don't like the fact you can have a created player with full stats if you wish. The selection of commentator names is good as there is a large variety; much more than other create player games!I think some of the other reviewers need to rethink their rating of the game, and need to improve their own skills before blaming glitches for poor kicking etc. I would advise going through the training before playing, or getting practice on the demo before hand as I did.

To truly understand how good this game is, you need to focus on what it is missing. This game lacks everything that EA had right in Rugby 2004(and that's not a lot).Let's begin with the in game camera angles. Side views and "broadcasting" views are perfect for watching the game on telly but completely useless when you want to see the gaps or angle the kicks into touch. There is only one view down the field, this means you can face the opponent try-line for one half only, in 2004 you had "Above" A and B, so you could change the view at half time and always face where you wanted to be - the opponent try-line. Best view to play is Classic 2 which automatically switch depending on who has possession, this can be frustrating at times for instance when intercepting the ball and then running off in the wrong direction because of the switch.Another thing missing is configuring and personalising controllers. The game is designed to use specific Gravis and Logitech gamepads which means you'll have to fork out if you don't own one of these. There is a scrimmage option in practice mode where you can practice your attacking plays against a team that defends but does not turn the ball over, when the ball is kicked out it starts over with a kick off, this means you never get opportunities to practice defense, scrumming or line outs except when facing opponents and set plays can be a deciding factor in any game.Surely the developers must have some professionals giving advice on technicalities such as the rules of the game etc. Most of the rules are spot; the exception in 2005 is try "grounding". In real rugby losing the ball in the opponent goal area results in a 5 metre scrum for them, in 2005 if you can get to the ball first, the try will be awarded. I suppose this brings the "human referee factor" into play, but then where is the third umpire?Making a dynamic sport like rugby into a game that captures the spectacle that is professional rugby today is not easy and EA has definitely improved at doing just this, but we can only hope they take note of the strengths of predecessors like Rugby 2004 and when the time comes, Rugby 2005 as well.

This is another great sports game that's just come out, Rugby 2005 is an updated version of the last one, Rugby 2004. This is a brilliant game, and I think the graphics, gameplay and sounds are fantastic.I think Rugby is a brilliant sport, but even better on Playstation 2, EA GAMES have made a stunning game, for all rugby fans to enjoy, and not forgeting, sport fans. It has all the international teams, and loads of players and teams including staduims and many more. These features tell you all about Rugby 2005.- All the major teams and players included (as above).- Play one of many events such as the Tri-Nations, World Cup or Super 12 championships (great tournaments to participate in).- Realistic motion-captured animations and excellent graphics (as I said,I said they are both fantastic and gamers will be pleased).- Authentic crowd reactions and chants (this is something unmentioned in Rugby 2004, also this game is more innovative).- Training Mode ("Rugby 101" training mode is another innovative feature).Lots of cool and new features, amazing gaming, Rugby 2005 is simply the best of the series in rugby games on console, BUY NOW AND BE SURPRISED!!!~ Calum Fairweather (RUGBY FAN)

This game is a vast improvement on 2004. The master league if harder untill you get three decent backs (fly half and two wingers best bet)if you get these then the game becomes so much easier. I managed to win 184-0 in a cup final! i was over 100 points by half time!Even though this game's graphics are a lot better I feel that the actual gameplay has been sacrificed. line-outs, scrums, rucks and mauls offer far less oportunities for your backs to make a move and make a brillient break through the middle. The kicking has been improved but I think that the kick into touch is that much harder, this I think is a draw back. This game is trying to be a better version of World Championship Rugby (which i didn't like any way)and succeeds, but by doing this it detracts from the roots of the game.Like many people have said this game relies heavily on button bashing which undermines the whole purpose of rugby as a delicate and precision sport (this comeing from a prop)This game is definately worth the money you are spending but if you do not mind about graphics then get 2004.

This is a much better game than rugby 2004, it looks better and plays better. The the gameplay is more realistic and matches don't seem to be as one sided as in 2004. However, I think the graphics could be improved further especially the stadium/crowd shots and the overhead camera angle - which I have to play on as I can't see what's going on from the side angle - is a bit too far from the action. I'm also quite disappointed that an element of 'button bashing' has been reintroduced in the rucks (when will EA Sports realise this stuff is for kids) surely there must be a better way of getting players to bind in the rucks than having to bash away on the console.EA needs to rethink this aspect of the game and lets have all the Zurich Premiership teams in future editions. A completely new comentary would be nice too instead of the same script but with different commentators as found on 2005. Good effort and a big improvement on the last one but needs more work.

Rugby 2005 makes Rugby 2004 look like a weak child. Fact. Its overall gameplay is far superior to what has been before it.I bought the game a couple of days ago, and i really only have one complaint. It represents the real game extremly well, however the opposition never seem to give away penalties, which is part of the real game. I have only once won a penalty, therefor it doesnt represent the modern game, where games are won and lost on goal kicking from penalties. If anyone knows anything different to this, like they have been recieving penaltys doing a certain thing, please let me know by giving me an email at [email protected]. Apart from this,Rugby 2005 is an extremly satisfying game.

Very enjoyable. The wealth of teams and competitions really makes this game. The super 12 is brilliant.Gameplay is fine, quite simple to get the hang of things apart from defending. I often found players diving out of the way of attacking players. Most annoying thing is the computers near flawless drog goal ratio. Everyone he tries goes over, and he has far too many attempts. Seems to be able to score them from anywhere inside your 40 metre line - you on the other hand have to be no further away than the 22 to score them. Not enough penalties and the rucks/scrums seem a bit random. But overall, as a rugby fan, very satisfying and plenty to keep you interested.

This rugby game is the best I have seen so far. After the shocking rugby 2004 I was really wondering if EA would ever get on track again. They did. This game is fun too play and the AI is much much better than in Rugby 2004.All aspects of the game seems to be working better. If you play on HARD you will have low scoring game with AI coming at you. Also you will need to play the long game (20 min).Much better than Rugby 2004 where I could kill them in the first half by doing the same tactic over and over again. No bugs as far as I could see!Have loaded the patch.Works well.In short.YES the best rugby game out there.Buy it.You won't be sorry.

20.7.2005

The graphics are much improved from Rugby 2004, and the gameplay is more realistic and less one-sided. Also, you can do such things as handoffs and shoulder charges, which makes it more fun and authentic. But the commentary is the exact same script as last time, just with different people, which makes it very boring. And there are such mistakes as drop goals being only possible from inside the 22. The place-kicking is too challenging as well.

How someone can write such a negative review about a game, a month before it is even released astounds me. Maybe 'A Gamer' meant Rugby 2004?Rugby 2005 has been updated and now uses the much vaunted Fifa game engine. This means the graphics and dynamics are altogether more realistic than previous titles. EA is starting to throw it's collective weight behind the Rugby series and with this title it really should start to show.

My name is John Pa'a and Iam 13 and I go to Rutherford Intermediate school. I think Rugby 2005 is the best because you can Choose the International countries and create a player to represent your team. I really enjoyed reading your reviews andwill quote your comments in my speech to persuade kids at my school to play Rugby 2005.From John Pa'aRutherford Intermediate school Wanganui New Zealand

I just rented this game and it is brilliant. It is so much better than Rugby 2004 and the graphics engine is stunning. Being able to create a player is great and the gameplay is fluent. A nice feature is Rugby 101 which teaches you the rules and how to play rugby, so even people who have never seen a rugby match in their life can still enjoy the game.

1.5.2006

Okay, so the camera angles are rubbish, u get cuaght a lot offside at the start and it can get a bit frustrating. But if u actually play the game thru a few tournaments on hard, it actually becomes really fun as u have to use proper tactics like kicking for position. I'd buy it, Rugby 06 isn't THAT much better.

5.1.2006

This is probably the best rugby game ever made, the graphics are decent and it is not very difficult to useAlthough it hasn't realy improved much in terms of what to do and what the controls are from rugby 2004 i still rate this the best rugby game made so far.
